2. ALPHA STATE
• An "alpha state of mind" is what scientists associate with "right brain" activity,
or our subjective senses of imagination, creativity, memory and intuition.
• When you are actively awake, you are typically in a state of mind known as
Beta, with brain wave activity between 14 and 30 HZ.
• When your brain wave activity slows down to between 7 and 14 HZ, you are
said to be in an alpha state. It is considered a "relaxed" state of mind that
allows you to be more receptive, open, creative and less critical.
• Edison, Einstein and many other brilliant thinkers, considered a daily ritual of
accessing an alpha state of mind, essential to their work.
3. ALPHA STATE (CONTD)
• When we utilize the alpha state, we have better memory and recall.
And because we are calmer, we tend to be more focused and make
better decisions.
• We access this state quite naturally during sleep, when day-
dreaming, or more consciously with Meditation and Self Hypnosis. In
fact many times throughout the day, your brain will dip into an alpha
state, even awake with eyes open.
• Learning to access alpha at will, can help you with memory, creativity,
intuition and if used on a regular basis --even for short periods-- you
will more easily cope with stress and reduce anxiety.

5. ALPHA WAVES
• They are electrical pulses within the brain, otherwise known as brain waves
or neural oscillations (brain oscillations). The alpha brain waves are relatively
slow at frequencies between 8 to 13 hertz (hz). Alpha waves are associated
with mind power.
• Using visualization and affirmations, people while in alpha state have the
power to make their desires reality. According to the law of attraction
defined by the New Thought philosophy.
• Whether we believe in the law of attraction or not, alpha brain waves are
real. An alpha wave is an “electrical rhythm of the brain with a frequency of
approximately 8 to 13 cycles per second that is often associated with a state
of wakeful relaxation”.¹
• Some people understand the alpha mind state as being in ‘Zen’.
6. WHAT DOES ALPHA STATE FEEL LIKE?
• This is how it is described: We are in the flow. We are in a state
of calm and helpful thoughts flow freely. Some describe the
alpha state as a light hypnotic state. We are awake but very
relaxed.
7. HOW TO ACHIEVE ALPHA STATE OF MIND
• Practice meditation daily.
• Pick a good time.
• Get comfy.
• Remove distraction, turn on some relaxing music if we prefer, it can help us close our
eyes.
• De-clutter your mind.
• Breathe in through your nose, out through your mouth.
• Count backwards from 100.
• If we don’t get it in our first attempt we must try over and over again to reach the
alpha state of mind.
• There are many guide apps to help us reach this state of mind.
8. HOW TO USE ALPHA FOR STUDYING
• Accessing an alpha state of mind is particularly useful for study or test taking.
• Before each study period relax yourself mentally and physically for a few minutes and tell
yourself that in a few moments I am going to open my eyes and read a lesson on _____.
• Give it a subject and title -- as if you are creating a space for that lesson in your brain.
• Tell yourself that you will have excellent memory, concentration, focus and understanding.
• Then open your eyes and read your lesson.
• When you are finished, get back into your relaxed zone and recall the main points that you
just read.
• Tell yourself that you will be able to recall the information anytime in the future.
• Students also find that using self hypnosis anchors help greatly with recall during tests.
9. BRAIN WAVE TYPES
• We experience alpha state of mind frequency when we are daydreaming or
consciously practicing mindfulness or meditation or other times when we are in the
flow — on automatic.
• We are in beta state of mind when wide awake and operating in today’s fast paced
lifestyle.
• In hypnosis, often linked to an unconscious or subconscious mind, we are likely to
exhibit an increased level of theta brain waves.4, 5
• In REM sleep or light sleep, our brains are in alpha state. In deep sleep (the dreamless
type), we enter delta and theta states.
• Advanced practitioners of meditation have been found to display increased gamma
activity.
• This stuff happens without our control or awareness.
• We know these associations through technology that measures brain activity, namely
EEG, that give views of brain oscillations.
10. CONSCIOUS USE OF ALPHA WAVES
• It is highly recommended to practice entering an alpha state of mind often for its multiple
benefits. The number of times is up to you but it is thought the more the better.
• However, you wouldn’t consciously use alpha wave type music or methods while driving or
operating machinery or any other activity that requires your full attention.
• Tip: Make sure it is a positive experience and avoid feeding your mind with harmful subliminal
information.
