Reconstruction Era of the United States and African...
92. In 1865 an appointment was held between representatives of an African American community in
Savannah, Georgia and Edwin Staunton, Secretary of War, and Major General Sherman concerning
topics of the freedman in Georgia. Land was set aside, 40 acres, and a mule that could no longer be
used by the Army to establish a community of their own. 1. Black leaders believed that owning land
was essential to freedom because by them owning their own land they would be able to support
themselves by themselves. 2. Blacks understand their relationship to the national government as the
Civil War drew to a close as being dependent upon their freedom. Q: Why 40 acres and a broken

95. This was a sharecropping contract between Thomas J. Ross, a land owner, and 8 freedmen. The
contract set the rules, regulations, and remunerations for sharecropping Ross's land. 1. The contract
limits the freedom of the laborers in that they are still under the power of the land owner, with
essentially the same rules as being a slave except they were getting paid in the crop for their work.
2. The benefits for the freed people of the sharecropping arrangement the security of land to work
and half the harvest, the risks of the sharecropping arrangement would have been the chance of little

96. During the Reconstruction period Elizabeth Staunton demanded the idea of equality for women.
In her essay she expressed ways that men and women are equal but not seen as being so, she also
believed that women should be able to vote. 1. Stanton defined the "social revolution" the United
States underwent after the Civil War as because it went deep down to the very foundation of society.
2. Stanton believed that industrial freedom within the family could be established by first changing
the laws and public opinion. Q: How do you think that women felt not having any rights even after

Essay on Two Part of the United States' Reconstruction Era
In the United States' history, the Reconstruction Era had two senses. From 1865 to 1877 was the
first, which involved the post Civil War action. The second sense, focused on the transformation of
the Southern United States from 1863 to 1877 with the Congress directing the issue of
reconstruction of state and society ("Reconstruction Era"). Frederick Jackson Turner argued that the
frontier was the chief determinant in American history ("Frederick Jackson Turner"). Both the
Reconstruction impact and Frederick Jackson Turner's thesis play a role in the environment during
the Economic Revolution.
Reconstruction took placed in the South from 1865 to 1880. It impacted the United States' history

Reconstruction had achieved much despite its obvious weaknesses. Schools that were built to
provide education for both blacks and poor whites, the roads constructed, the protection given to
life, an property were all indeed major achievements of the government (Pink Monkey).
Frederick Jackson Turner had a thesis that also provided the environment for the Economic
Revolution. He thesis accounted for why the people of America and the American government were
so divergent from their European equivalents. There were many people that believed that the
frontier's end symbolized the start of a new stage in American life. These people also believed that
America must expand over seas. There were others that had views of this exposition as the drive for
a "new wave in the history of Untied States imperialism" (Frontier Thesis).
A man named William Appleman Williams, who led the "Wisconsin School" of diplomatic
historians, argued that the frontier thesis encouraged American expansion overseas. Williams had
viewed Turner's frontier thesis as a way to influence action against totalitarianism, advocate
democracy through both of the world wars, and affirm the spending on foreign aid. However,
Frederick Jackson Turner's thesis, in comparison to Theodore Roosevelt's work, The Winning of the
West, a greater emphasis was placed not on territorial subjugation, but on the evolution of American
republicanism (Frontier Thesis).

Essay On Failure Of Reconstruction
Even though African–American's rights made some progress during the Reconstruction Era, most of
them were insignificant and never truly effective in their lives. The emancipation of slaves was one
of the great stakes of the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era, but it was a failure as well. Many
Northern leaders weren't Abolitionists but didn't want to lose the support of their electors. Even
Abraham Lincoln (as well as his successor Andrew Jonshon) was arguably a white supremacist,
even though he passed Abolitionist laws that benefitted slaves. But he would have rather sent them
to other countries, so that they wouldn't be his problem anymore as his projects to send freedmen in
colonies in Central African and Haitian colonies show. Furthermore, ... Show more content on

The following twelve years were a first attempt at a Reconstruction, a decade of many changes for
the South, for the nation and for former slaves. Unfortuantely, it was only also a decade of conflict:
the conflict between the North and the South transfering from the battle field to a political one. If
they did find a way to compromise in 1877 with the presidential election of Hayes, freedmen's hope
of a better life that had been fed throughout the Civil War by Lincoln came to a crushing halt. This
Reconstruction was arguably a failure in that department in spite of the myriad of legislations passed
in that time. In the manner of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 that emancipated slaves
but didn't free slaves residing in border states fighting for the Union, nor those residing in Southern
states already under the control of the Union, the Reconstruction effectively changed very little for
the United States, and the South remained a profondouly racist society while the North's will for
racial equity had

The Reconstruction Grace Barar January 14, 2016 Although the reconstruction did unify the United
States and passed the 14th and 15th amendments, reconstruction failed on many other vital issues.
The radical republican legislation that promised freedom and equality for all was far from a reality
for black Americans. Legislation failed to protect former slaves from white supremacy, and
persecution. The entire social and cultural backbone of the south needed reform in order for African
Americans to enjoy the freedom and equality that this nation promised, unfortunately this change
did not come during the reconstruction. In 1877 president Hayes removed federal troops from the
south, almost immediately former confederates and slave owners returned

Was Reconstruction A Success Or Failure Essay
Reconstructions Successes, Failures, and Legacy The Reconstruction Era of 1865–1877 proved to
be one of triumph and disappointments for many. The end of the Civil War brought on feelings of
freedom and the vision of great things on the horizon for slaves. At the same time, feelings of
despair and that the Civil War was a "lost cause" was a common feeling among many white
Americans. Freedom, even though still limited, was viewed as a success by black people. The
organization of the Freedmen's Bureau was viewed as a success. The Freedmen's Bureau provided
former slaves and underprivileged white southern people social, educational, and economics
services. "Blacks won election to the southern state governments and even to the U.S. Congress
during this period" (Reconstruction, 1). The passing of the 14th and 15th Amendment were also
viewed as successes. These laws protected civil rights and allowed for voting, no matter the color of
your skin. The Enforcement Act of 1870 was also viewed as a success because it upheld the 13th
Amendment that gave slaves freedom. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The "black codes" can be viewed as a failure because blacks, even after Reconstruction began, still
had stipulations. They could be arrested for not providing proof of employment or residence or for
just acting out. They, then, were forced into "labor on farms or road crews" (The American Journey:
A History of the United States, 362). Violence and terror came in the form of the Ku Klux Klan. The
Klan's goal was to intimidate black people and deter them from voting and seeking a better life for
themselves. Some other failures were Jim Crow Laws, because they encouraged racial segregation,

Modernization Of Reconstruction Era
A great deal of the confusion over whether or not the Reconstruction Era is considered
modernization is because most people believe that modernization is only a present–day
phenomenon. The dictionary definition of modernization is as follows, "the process of adapting
something to modern needs or habits." Today, my argument is how the Reconstruction Era is the
epitome of modernization. There are multiple things that contributed to the modernization of the
Reconstruction Era, such as the economic system changing (the Gilded Age) and societal changes
(radical and social modernization). Personally, I believe that the societal component of the
Reconstruction Era had the most impact. From radical republicans, the passing of the 14th
Amendment, Jim Crow laws, and the court case Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896. There were many
changes in society that helped shape the United States into what it is today. ... Show more content on

If you are modernizing something, you are advancing that area, and simplifying processes. During
Reconstruction, the United States underwent a lot of historically significant changes. The
Reconstruction Era lasted fourteen years, starting in 1863 and ending in 1877. The major changes of
Reconstruction began after the Civil War in hopes to "reunite" the union and confederacy. This is
when a group called the radical republicans came about. They believed that African Americans were
entitled to the same rights that white Americans had. Radical republicans also believed the southern
states that seceded from the union should be punished for leaving and their roles in the war.
Thaddeus Stevens, a lawyer played a major role in this group. Stevens even came up with idea to
confiscate the land of planters who left the union and divide it among freedmen and northern
migrants whom were going to the south. His idea failed to pass, as it seemed a little too

Why Is Reconstruction Too Conservative
Reconstruction was a time of bringing the union back together. However it ultimately ended up
failing. Overall reconstruction was too conservative. Although reconstruction failed a few important
things did come out of it. "The establishment of an educational system was one of the most striking
successes of the republican regime," notes Thomas Holt, "Its creation firmly established the
principle of free education in a state that had not had such a system before the war." Although
legislatures had many differences, they were able to come together to make education available for
all. The establishment of a public school system was huge success of reconstruction. However
schools were still segregated and not at all equal. Although it may not have worked as well as it
should of, it introduced free public education into states where there was no such thing pre–war. ...

These amendments gave basic rights to african americans. The 13th amendment abolished slavery in
the United States, which led to the 14th amendment giving citizenship to all persons born or
naturalized in the United States, and the 15th amendment which gave all african american males the
right to vote.
While these things were good, reconstruction was still far too conservative. Freedmen in the north
were still being treated terribly. As C. Vann Woodward writes, "The counter of reconstruction was
well under way by the time the amendment was ratified in March 1870, and in that year it took on
new life in several quarters." One way was the Klu Klux Klan and other terrorist groups. These
groups used intimidation and terror to sway the votes of republican voters and leaders. Drowning,
torching, murder by mob were just a few of the forms of violence used by this

Reconstruction Of The Civil War
Prior to the Civil War, the United States' economy was essentially agricultural based; slavery in the
South was the key player in its prosperous economy. Hence, it is no wonder the South stood in
defense of slavery's permanence when challenged with the demand for abolition. The Southern
proslavery Confederate states fought against the Northern antislavery Union states during the Civil
War. The Union prevailed in the war and once the Confederates seceded and left the United States
with a new predicament: The Reconstruction Era. In which, the Union needed to find a way to
readmit the Confederates back into the nation in accord to Union principles. Essentially, although
the ex–Confederates rejoined the Union, the reconstruction of the South was unsuccessful.
Presidential, Congressional, and Radical reconstruction individually served to the collaborative
failure of readmitting the South based on Northern ideals. Furthermore, Presidential Reconstruction
was futile in the reformation of the South. During this phase of reconstruction, Abraham Lincoln
proposed his Ten Percent Plan in which he strategized to readmit the South into the Union by having
at least ten percent of the Confederate states vote back into the Union in exchange for amnesty so
long as they accepted the thirteenth amendment which abolished slavery. However, the South
rejected Lincoln's plan and consequently congress came up with the Wade–Davis Bill, which
proposed that, in order to be reinstated, the male

Sharecroppers: Reconstruction Era of the United States and...
After the devastation left from the Civil War, many field owners looked for new ways to replace
their former slaves with field hands for farming and production use. From this need for new field
hands came sharecroppers, a "response to the destitution and disorganized" agricultural results of
the Civil War (Wilson 29). Sharecropping is the working of a piece of land by a tenant in exchange
for a portion of the crops that they bring in for their landowners. These farmhands provided their
labor, while the landowners provided living accommodations for the worker and his family, along
with tools, seeds, fertilizers, and a portion of the crops that they had harvested that season. A
sharecropper had "no entitlement to the land that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even having sufficient clothing at all was a struggle for the family. The clothing that they did have
was "coarse, crude, and not warm enough" (Gentry 138). The typical attire for men was "denim
overalls", and women wore "dresses made out of cheap cotton goods" (Gentry 138). With children
constantly growing and maturing, having suitable clothing for them was demanding. During these
times, minimizing was the key for most families. Often this meant that items such as "shoes, socks
and underwear were accessories" if any at all (Gentry 138). Due to this lack in appropriate clothing,
many times "the family was held back from ‘social doin's' because of their unkempt appearance"
(Corder and Miller 42). Along with the emotional embarrassment of their personal appearance,
sharecroppers and their families suffered physical consequences. Often a lack of inadequate clothing
left them more susceptible to illness, and in their circumstances, that was a risk they could not afford
to take. Another important factor for the substandard conditions of sharecroppers was their
significant lack of food. Having to survive off of low supplies of food is harmful to anyone, but to
people who are lacking in so many other areas, it could be devastating. Sharecroppers everywhere
were already being cheated of how much of the seasons harvest was actually theirs, in addition to
the impractical rules of what they could and could not own while they lived

Reconstruction Of The United States
Schutz, Jackson CRN 36889 T/R 9:35 20 September 2015 Reconstructing the Unconstructable
Gunshots rang throughout American soil in the year 1861. The seven southern states seceded and
formed the Confederate States of America. The remaining northern states were known as the Union.
The central issue between the Union and the Confederacy was slavery which led to America's
bloodiest war, lasting four years and leaving roughly six hundred–thousand people dead. The North
was victorious and the South's infrastructure was severely crippled. All slaves were set free and a
month before the official end to the war, Lincoln was assassinated, leaving Vice– President Andrew
Johnson to take over the Presidency. The next task for America to tackle was the South's
reconstruction which would continue until 1877. Although reconstruction made the South go
through many changes leading to lots of progress, it also had some fallbacks from the resentment
present in the South. The 13th Amendment was passed saying, "Neither slavery nor involuntary
servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall
exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Upon the emancipation of
all black slaves inside the United States, children flocked to newly established schools made
possible by missionaries, groups of ex–slaves, and even the Freedman's Bureau. Congress set up the
Freedman's Bureau to aid black former slaves in the South.

Redemption, Reconstruction, And Recover
"The three–step key to happiness when everything is down is – Redemption, Reconstruction, and
Recover." Redemption, Reconstruction, and Recover demonstrate how the Reconstruction era
prevailed. The Reconstruction era did redeem and reconstruct the United States but did not recover
it. However, the United States still hasn't fully recovered because we still struggle with
discrimination. For example, during the era, slaves were freed from slavery and received suffrage
(the addition of 3 new amendments to the Constitution). But, the whites were not able to come to
terms with the new Constitution. As a result, they continued to discriminate against the former
slaves because of their new rights. Instead, we have to define the most important factor

1. To what extent did the Era of Reconstruction create a New South?
On December 8, 1863, approximately 16 months before the North defeated the South in the Civil
War, Lincoln issued a proclamation that laid out his vision of Reconstruction. For example, laws
were passed requiring Southern states to adopt new constitutions in conformity with the U.S.
Constitution, and to ratify the 14th Amendment and grant blacks the right to vote. This was a drastic
change because before the reconstruction era African Americans were slaves and were not allowed
to vote. The South entire society was impacted by the Era of Reconstruction from the way they lived
to how they made a living. The Reconstruction Era implemented various changes to the South as for
as the workforce with a great emphasis on cash crops the majority of the crops grown in the South
were being imported. African–Americans also were giving the right to actively participate in the
government. A Rise of Merchants stores in the south sprang up around plantations to sell supplies on

Reconstruction After The Civil War
Reconstruction refers to the time period after the Civil War when the Union worked to reintegrate
the Southern states that had seceded from the union, and were eventually defeated in the Civil War.
The Reconstruction era occurred between 1865–1877 (American Destiny, pg. 409). There were
various plans on how to approach and follow through with Reconstruction from President Lincoln's,
President Johnson's, Congresses', and the radicals' plans on how to best execute the reintegration of
the defeated Southern states. Lincoln's plan was a mild approach, as he only required that ten
percent of each defeated Southern state take a loyalty oath to the United States. Once they achieved
that ten percent they could then instate their own state government,

The United States And The Reconstruction Era
The United States of America faced great tensions throughout the 18th century because of the
division on the issue of slavery, this was reflected through the way that African Americans were
treated up until the Reconstruction. In the early 18th century if one was from African ancestry, they
were condemned as inferior in the eyes of the white man. This would continue for over a century
and a half into the Reconstruction Era in 1865. On the other hand, there was an abolitionist
movement led by both black woman and men, and white woman and men. This movement was
formed to completely abolish slavery, and used tactics of sharing experiences that slaves faced, and
one of the most recognized advocates was Frederick Douglass. However, southerners did not agree
with the abolitionist movement because they saw slavery as essential to their lives because it made
their economy stable and flourish, and saw the Reconstruction Era as an encroachment on their
freedom. Further, the Reconstruction Era was a hopeful time for emancipated slaves, but

Many Americans did not agree on the issue of slavery in the late 18th century, and still felt this way
after the Reconstruction Era. This issue caused great tensions between the North and the South, and
is depicted through the frustration from all the effort that Americans made to bring slaves to North
America, and were in their eyes their property. Southerners became angry that Northerners wanted

The End Of The Reconstruction
In the 1860's there was an Era that started called the reconstruction. The main purpose for the
reconstruction was to give African–American people full political and civil equality. However, it
was very tough to do this, especially since most white in the south didn't want the African–
Americans to have the same rights as themselves. During this Era there were multiple good things
that happened, yet, there were also many bad things that happened. For instance, during the
reconstruction the 14th amendment was passed so the African–American would get equal rights, but
during the Era groups such as Ku Klux Klan was created, also during this time the economic
problems weren't solved. Since the main point of the reconstruction was to make African–
Americans to gain equality, the 14th amendment that was passed in 1868 was very positive. The
14th amendment was a very important time during the reconstruction, since the amendment made it
illegal to treat different races unequally. However, although some people thought that the 14th
amendment was going to make everything good in the society, and that the African–Americans
would be treated fully equally wasn't completely correct. For example, although the 14th
amendment was passed, and made it illegal to treat different races unequally, some people still did.
Nevertheless, the African–Americans did gain more rights than they had before, and were treated
more equally after the 14th amendment passed. Although the 14th amendment was going

The Reconstruction Era in the United States was a time from 1865–1877 when the government
made the attempt to revitalize the South after the Civil War. This movement was begun by President
Abraham Lincoln and continued after his assassination by his successor, Andrew Johnson. The
focus of this era was on an economic, political, and social level in the South. Numerous bills and
acts were passed throughout the years to assist in strengthening and enforcing rules that would
essentially turn back the clock for the South. Although, at the time, this was thought to be an
excellent way to reform the nation, many disagree and believe it was a failure until World War II

The South's secession lasted 4 years, and Reconstruction brought the Union and Confederacy
together and once again restored what we know as the United States. New and improved laws were
put in place to protect the rights of newly freed men. Freedmen's Bureau and many other smaller
associations were formed. These helped Southerners and African Americans who were in need. For
example, they helped those who were homeless, hungry, and poor. The Compromise of 1877 played
a large role in Reconstruction, stating that the Republicans could vote for another Republican to
become a nation leader, as long as they assisted in rebuilding the South ("Reconstruction"). Another
important act that positively affected the nation was the Enforcement Act of 1870. This act banned
the use of terror, force, or bribery to prevent people from voting because of their race. Overall, it
helped reinforce some of the positive effects of this era (Cas). Possibly the the most important
legacies left from the Reconstruction Era include amendments 13, 14, and 15. Amendment Thirteen

Our History
The industrial revolution introduced many new technology and improved our economic system.
There have been a large increase in manufacture and machine tools since then. This led to better
transportation, steam powered factories, consumer goods, a large workforce, and labour conditions.
During the 1870's , many financial issues had arise in the United States of America and in many
European countries. Due to the financial crises that arise , it led to a major depressing era in history
that is called the Panic of 1873. In "Standing at Armageddon" written by Nell Irvin Painter, the
author discusses the progressive era and the United States economic crisis , as well as, social status
during the ninetheeth century. Painter explains on how the high class white people owned most of
the United States industry and due to their wealth, they owned fifty–one percent of the properties in
America. They were the wealthiest one percent of the United States. There were different layers of
wealth and social status which also integrates with race and ethnicity. Those who were wealthy in
America weren't the ones working hard and getting their hands dirty. Many low class were
immigrants, women and blacks who worked in factories and were receiving low wages and poor
work conditions. The low class owned only 1.2 percent of the properties in America. This caused

Effects Of The Reconstruction Era
The Reconstruction era was the period that followed the end of the Civil War whose purpose was to
reconstruct the United States. This was done to help rebuild the South and bring it back into the
Union. The 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments gave African Americans some civil liberties, they
prohibited slavery, gave national citizenship for every person that was born in the United States, and
voting rights can not be denied because of their race or color. Looking at this era, I will discuss how
it affected the society of the Americans, the economy and the laws that were passed. Although the
Reconstruction Era tried to help from the end of the Civil War into the early twentieth–century it
resulted a failure to establish the civil rights for the African Americans.
The Americans in the South felt humiliated and were against the decision of the government to give
certain rights given to the African Americans. For this reason, many whites joined some groups who
were against the freed slaves such as the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan was a political terrorist
group whose purpose was to intimidate the black Americans after the 15th amendment was ratified
and they were given the right to vote. "The Klan had just appeared there in 1868, using intimidation,
arson, whippings, sexual assault, and murder to keep potential Republican voters away from the
polls in that year's election" (Political Terrorism during Reconstruction, 1). This shows the actions
that this social group took to terrorize the Black Americans to avoid their participation in the
elections. In April 1865, before his assassination Abraham Lincoln declared that he had hope that
there would be no "bloody work" after the war, but most of it "visited upon the freedman as
Northerners and Southerners–black and white– struggled over ... the place of African Americans in
American society (The Meaning of Reconstruction, 302). The Americans in the South were not
happy with the integration of the African Americans to their society.
After all the damage that was left over from the war, the goal of the Reconstruction Era was to bring
the economy of the South back to how it was before the war started. The 13th amendment
prohibited slavery, so after this amendment was

Federal Reconstruction
Throughout the decades immediately following the civil war, federal reconstruction rebuilt and
forever changed the nation. Federal reconstruction in the south ceased in 1877 due to an abundance
of social and political factors, but not without creating an everlasting impact that forever changed
the nation.
In the social aspect the end of the civil war literally split the nation into two sections, the north and
south, with completely different ideas concerning reconstruction. The issue of Slavery was one of
the topmost social issues in the era of reconstruction. The end of the civil war signaled a vast
amount of change to come. The issue of slavery was being dissolved by the federal government,
which in turn meant that many plantation owners ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The compromise of 1877 had the largest impact in ending reconstruction because it was the final
official agreement to resume the nation as a whole and give the southern states the freedom to
equally engage in politics without the watchful eye of the military.1 Socially slavery was a huge
issue in dissolving the tension between the two sections of the united states, however the tension
immigrated over into politics. Organizations like the Freedman's Bureau, that assisted African
Americans in functioning in society and creating communities, paired with the creation of the
fifteenth amendment lit fires across the nation because it made pro–slavery advocates combat the
notion that African Americans were legally citizens, meaning that men gained suffrage and other
basic rights. Southerner's in particular had a lot of trouble accepting the political transition America
made towards African Americans, and they in return retaliated by creating terrorist groups such as
the Ku Klux Klan and/or exclaimed what they felt was "negro inferiority" in published works as
Josiah Nott did.2 With such retaliation the federal government combated the disobedience by
drafting the enforcements acts, forcing citizens to comply with minimal standards and thus ending
the immediate need for federal supervision on the south through reconstruction. All in all the
election of Rutherford B. Hayes complied with the various laws put into action in the time frame
known as reconstruction, set America up to no longer need reconstruction to effectively

Reconstruction : The Success Of The Reconstruction Era
The Reconstruction Era was a rollercoaster in aspects such as politics and society in the United

this period in the United States history the United States was divided and had to be reconstructed.
The Reconstruction had various fails in history, but it also had some successful outcomes. During
the Reconstruction Era, the United States faced some fails; they failed to reconstruct the social
views of the south, failing to protect the newly freed slaves, they failed to keep the former
confederate leader from regaining power, they fail to keep racist extremist groups from influencing
and corrupting the government, and they especially failed to stop the spread of fear, terrorism and
racism. There were some successful outcomes of the Reconstruction Era like the ratification of the
13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment, the restored unification of the United States, new state
constitution, the first African–Americans were elected to political office and the south established
public schools.
Shortly after the Civil War the North had to take care of reconstructing the South like some radicals
put it "remake the South in the image of the North." The South did not want to change some slave
owner tried to keep their slaves from finding out that they had rights, some even found a way to
hold some slaves in a legal way called sharecropping. Allowing sharecropping failed in the sense

Reconstruction Dbq Essay
Reconstruction is defined as a thing that has been rebuilt after being damaged or destroyed. The
United States from 1860 to 1877 is known as the era of Reconstruction because of the relentless
attempts to reconsolidate the country. After times of war and disagreements, political and social
developments contributed to the extreme changes that occurred in both the North and the South.
Years before the Civil War started, the economic interests of Americans in the South differed from
those in the North. This aided the start of tensions, and sectionalism became enormously prevalent
in the election of 1860. Abraham Lincoln's triumph in that election triggered frustration and a sense
of unfairness from the South. His political republican views prompted southern states to try and
succeed. South Carolina became the first state to declare its secession from the Union. (Doc 1.)

Although, the issue later became a goal for the Union. Lincoln issued the Emancipation
Proclamation, which freed all the slaves in states that were still rebelling against the United States. It
didn't, however, give blacks civil rights such as voting. African Americans at the Union of
Tennessee (which has been exempt from the proclamation due to much of it being in the Union)
claimed in 1865 that they should have basic rights, such as suffrage. They argued that African
Americans as a group had been loyal to the national government throughout the war. (Doc.3) In
Gideon Welles diary, he makes known his opinion that the Federal government wouldn't budge, and
privately stated that they didn't have the authority nor was it ever their intention to grant black civil
rights.

The Various Eras Of The Civil War
The civil war was a grave cause of many events. Many people may see the results of the war as a
chain reaction to many following eras. One of the most prominent eras that emerged from the civil
war was the reconstruction era. The reconstruction era emerged around 1865 and continued until
1877. This time period generally refers to the time in United States history in which the federal
government set the conditions that would allow the rebellious Southern states back into the Union.
The States were divided into the Union (North) and Confederacy (South).

The End Of The Civil War
After the Civil War, the fact that slavery was abolished might seem to be the end of the story;
however, the problems derived from the abolishment of slavery had yet to be addressed. During the
Reconstruction Era, these problems were reflected on the political, social, and economic aspects.
Which played several major roles in shaping America from the late nineteenth into the twentieth
centuries. These three aspects, political, social, and economical, affected one another so much that
they were inseparable. The beginning leniency of Andrew Johnson all the way to the Confederates
and later the political conflict between Johnson and the Radical Republicans, and lastly, the political
struggle between Republicans and Democrats. It all resulted in the ever–changing policies toward
the freed people. These different policies had strong effects on the society, especially the freed
people. Although some of the policies, such as the abolition of slavery and several Constitutional
Amendments were beneficial to the rights of freed people, the sudden increase of freed people
brought about the separation of black and white and many other social issues. Thus the real equality
among people still had yet to be achieved. The economy also affected the society and the politics.
The depression of the economy after the Civil War made people focus on their own situations,
instead of worrying about the freed people. For example the people were distressed about getting
money and how to provide for

Reconstruction
Reconstruction was a time of great pain and endless questions for the United States of America.
What was going to happen to the newly freed slaves? How would they be treated? Would the United
States ever be one cohesive country? Many of these questions are still unanswered in today's
society, but reconstruction was in place to try to rebuild the US after the devastation of the Civil
war. The reconstruction era lasted from 1865–1877. During this time the United States military was
stationed in the South, so that everything would run smoothly and hopefully allow for readmission
of the once confederate states, back into the Union as one.
The Civil war caused a lot of destruction and devastation in the Southern United States. Many
efforts were going to be needed if the United States wanted to be a strong power. There was a huge
push to secure the rights of the newly freed, former slaves and incorporate them more into society.
One major factor that led to the reconstruction era was the need for the rebuilding of infrastructure
in the South. After the Civil war, much of the infrastructure was unuseable. Also, the US hoped to
reorganize and revitalize the Southern states as a whole and bring them back into the Union. ...

Judge Harlan 's Dissent : The Plessy Vs Plessy Case
Part One
Judge Harlan's Dissent is a written response about the Plessy vs. Ferguson decision. In the Plessy vs.
Ferguson case, Homer Plessy argued that his decision to break the Louisiana Separate Car Act was
denying his rights in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments, but the majority decision
debunked his arguments. However, Judge Harlan's Dissent explains his reasoning for disagreeing
with the majority. His opinions were likely intended to be heard by all citizens of the United States,
but it seems as though he is aiming the disagreement at the people in the majority who is against it
in order to prove his point. First, Judge Harlan points out that Plessy is right that the Constitution

Ferguson case prove otherwise. Harlan concludes that these are several of the reasons he does not
agree with the court decision. Overall, Harlan stays clear of biases because he includes information
about rights for both races and does not defend one single side. However, there are potential biases
because he did not directly include the court decision or Louisiana Separate Car Act in his dissent. It
is also is unclear what Judge Harlan's background is and what his opinions could have been before
the specific case. In this document, it is obvious that the time period was facing a time of
segregation in the country. The Louisiana Separate Car Act that is part of the Plessy vs. Ferguson
case shows the physical separation between the races. During this time period, it was typical for
whites and non–whites to have separate public resources because the Redeemers hoped to undo the
Radical Reconstruction progress in African American and non–white rights. In addition, non–whites
were disrespected and dehumanized, as shown by Harlan's mention of the Louisiana Separate Car
Act dismissal of the fact that whites could not sit with a non–white group of people.

Essay On Reconstruction After The Civil War
From April 12, 1861, to May 9, 1865, the United States had one of its bloodiest conflicts that it was
ever involved in. The Civil War was a war between the North and the South of the United States.
During this war, there were around 620,000 men that were killed. This war ended after Confederate
general Edmund Kirby Smith surrendered his troops. At this point the fighting had ceased, however,
the tensions between the North and the South were still present. There were still disagreements on
the rights of the now freed blacks. After the Civil War, there was a question on how the South would
re–enter the government of the Union and how the southern states were going to view the blacks.
This time period after the Civil War where these questions were answered is known as The
Reconstruction and lasted from 1863–1877. During this time period, President Lincoln was
murdered and President Johnson was impeached. Congress also made major additions to the
Constitution that they thought would bring equality to the South. These changes caused a backlash
and whites tried to get back to the way things were before the war when whites had all the power.
Despite a few positive outcomes, this era of reconstruction of the South ultimately failed. Presidents

The period of reconstruction in the south was a period of social reconstruction on a scale not
previously seen in American history. The Reconstruction era occurred after the Civil War period,
and lasted from 1864 to 1877. The Reconstruction period brought upon an era of Martial Law, a
change of social consciousness towards slavery and the rights of African Americans, a New South
with closer ties to the North. Emancipated Slaves, Northerners, and White Southerners all had
different opinions towards the New South and the new found freedom of the emancipated slaves
along with the various concepts of freedom. "We believe our present position is by no means so well

How Did The Reconstruction Era Affect America Today
The reconstruction era was a time that then affected America in positive facets and negative aspects
as well, and still affects America today. Thanks to the reconstruction era, there are several
implementations that geared the world on the path in which it is today. Had it not been for some of
the laws that were set in place African Americans may have not had many of the opportunities that
were presented during the reconstruction period, therefore the years of oppression and cruelty might
still be present. Arguably one of the greatest contributions during the reconstruction era was the
thirteenth amendment. This is the amendment that formally abolished the cruel and unjust acts of
slavery in 1865. The thirteenth amendment states ""Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude,
except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist
within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction" (Primary documents in American
History). "The ratification came eight months after the end of the war, but it represented the
culmination of the struggle against slavery. When the war began, some in the North were against
fighting what they saw as a crusade to end slavery. Although many northern Democrats and
conservative Republicans were opposed to slavery 's expansion, they were ambivalent about
outlawing the institution entirely" (13th amendment ratified). This statement is proof that although
the North was opposed to slavery they were not

Significance Of The Reconstruction Era
As a nation, America has gone through many things including war and political changes. People in
the United States went through much throughout history. The people that once lead this country had
different intentions and targets. One moment in history that was very important and very influential
today is the Reconstruction Era. The Reconstruction Era was a time period that contains many
accomplishments, failures, leaders, and aims. There were many events in this era which made
people call it a failure and a success. In the year of 1865, right after the Civil War, Reconstruction
began. The Reconstruction Era was known as the time of "repair" after the civil war. At that time,
the leader of the nation was Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln wanted the south to join the Union so he
freed the African Americans. When looking at the Reconstruction Era, there are many events that
make up this era such as the reconstruction amendments, the freedman's bureau, and the Ku Klux
Klan. During the Reconstruction Era, congress passed three amendments which were the 13th, 14th,
and 15th amendments. The 13th abolished slavery, the 14th granted the African American males
citizenship, and the 15th gave the African Americans the right to vote. According to the thirteenth

Reconstruction And Reconstruction
The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, issued by Abraham Lincoln, launched the United States
into a groundbreaking point in history where blacks were no longer to be considered property, but
free individuals. Following the Civil War, The Reconstruction Era was led by President Andrew
Johnson and spanned the time between 1865 and 1877. This period was an attempt to rejoin the
Southern Confederates with the Union, as well as to haul blacks from a status of subjugation to
become active participants in the American society. On a broad scale, Reconstruction helped blacks
to gain freedom; they obtained citizenship and had a political role in society. However, on a
narrower level, this period failed in achieving its goal. Blacks continued to be segregated socially
and weren't treated as equals to their white counterparts.
During the Reconstruction era, a series of laws were passed to give blacks a position in political
American society. These laws were implemented into the Constitution as the Thirteenth, Fourteenth
and Fifteenth Amendments. The thirteenth amendment was added at the start of Reconstruction in
1865. It strengthened the emancipation proclamation, officially abolishing slavery. In 1868, the
fourteenth amendment made all people born in the U.S. American citizens and are therefore equally
protected under the law and entitled to vote if they are male and over twenty–one years of age. This
included blacks. The fifteenth amendment reinforced the fourteenth by mandating

Eric Foner A Short History Of Reconstruction Analysis
Eric Foner's A Short History of Reconstruction is a shortened version of his Reconstruction:
America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863–1877; however, in the shorter version certain broad themes
unified the crucial narrative. His first theme is the midst of the black experience, second theme is to
trace the ways Southern society as a whole was remodeled, third theme is the evolution of racial
attitudes and patterns of race relations, and the fourth theme is the emergence during the Civil War
and Reconstruction. This narration of Reconstruction begins not in 1865, but with the Emancipation
Proclamation of 1863. This was done to stress the importance of the Proclamation in unifying two
major themes, grass–roots black activity and the newly empowered national state and to indicate
that Reconstruction was the beginning of a broadened historical process: the adjustment of
American society to the end of slavery. Foner's A Short History of Reconstruction verifies the
authors prevailing leadership in historical revisionism. His extensive knowledge alters the scrutiny
of the historical standpoint, stimulating students and intellectuals to reconsider the assumptions of
prominent reconstruction works from foregoing eras such as those that influenced our understanding
of the Reconstruction era. Furthermore, Foner advises intellectuals to continue to uncover neglected
experiencesof the one of the most phenomenal eras in American history. Foner's text provides a

The Reconstruction of America after the Civil War
The Civil War left a country divided not only by property lines and borders but by beliefs as well.
Not just religious beliefs, moral beliefs also. It left both sides, north and south struggling, trying to
figure out what their next move towards reuniting the divided America was going to be. The period
following the end of the Civil War would become known as the "Reconstruction Era." An era that
raised just as many questions as it did answers. A reconstruction of America that seems to carry on
many decades later. The reconstruction of America would decide how the south would rejoin the
Union, what was to become of the nearly 3 million black slaves freed, how America was going to
recover from such a devastating internal war. There appears to be phases that the Reconstruction Era
went through, roughly three of them. The first is that of the Presidential Reconstruction, it lead to a
more radical Republican party. After such we find ourselves in what was to be known as the Radical
Reconstruction. A period where the blacks found their voices being heard. Finally we lead up to the
end of the Reconstruction–era. It is said that the reconstruction lasted from 1865 to 1877, however it
can be said that, to this very day, some reconstruction is still ongoing. It all starts with the
Presidential Reconstruction. In 1865 President Johnson announced his plans for Reconstruction,
which reflected both his staunch Unionism and his firm belief in states' rights . Johnson believed

Reconstruction era after the Civil War presented many challenges towards the advancement of Civil

During the Civil Rights movement, there were many times where Constitutional law was redefined
in order to eliminate the unjust treatment of blacks. However, much of the change that marked this
era came in the form of writings(and speeches) from leaders in the African American community.
W.E.B Du Bois, a prominent African American writer and activist, understood that change would
not "come in [a] moment" (Document 6). He felt that the "thinking class of American Negroes...
[should] ask of this nation three things: 1. The right to vote / 2. Civic equality / 3. The education of
youth according to ability" (Document 6). Du Bois helped the redefining of Civil Rights, albeit
slowly, as he called on everyone(especially blacks) to continue fighting for their rights "in season
and out of season" (Document 6). In his opinion, the advancement of Civil Rights can not be limited
to the voting season and requires sensitive attention until full equality is reached. This specific work
by Du Bois redefines Civil Rights as it inspires the future of the Civil Rights Movement and
activists, and calls on blacks to demand the same rights and opportunities(for education) as their
white counterparts. While writings like Du Bois' stood as important pieces in the positive redefining
of Civil Rights, progression of Civil Rights for black Americans was heavily impacted by the
altering of the constitutional meaning behind "separate but equal" (Document 8). Plessy v. Ferguson
was a 1896 Supreme Court case that concluded that the separation of races did not imply inferiority.
This ideal stood until 1954 the concept of "separate but equal" arose in the decision of Brown v.
Board of Education. Eventually, the court decided that "in the field of public education the doctrine
of 'separate but equal' has no place [and] separate educational facilities are inherently unequal"
(Document 8). This

Reconstruction Process Of Reconstruction
After the Civil War, the South was in ruins and America was on the road to Reconstruction. America
was now faced with the challenges of overcoming Southern resentment, restoring the Union, and
determining the meaning of black freedom. The process of reconstruction would be complicated and
complex and would involve readmitting the Southern states that had seceded from the Union;
physically reconstructing the South; and integrating the freedmen into America's society. Various
plans for Reconstruction were involved: Lincoln's ten percent plan, the Wade–Davis Bill, Johnson's
Reconstruction Plan, and the Congressional Reconstruction Plan. Although the blacks gained their
freedom after the war, their lives did not change drastically. The Reconstruction Era had brought
upon change to the southern states as freedmen were able to work for themselves and had the ability
to have their own families, but that does not mean that they were equal to the whites. The Thirteenth
Amendment that was passed under Lincoln's presidency formally abolished slavery and involuntary
servitude but when his presidency was passed on to Andrew Johnson, the freedmen did not have as
many rights. He did not pay any mind to the newly freed blacks in the South and in turn, the
Southern states were able to pass the "black codes" which restricted the freedmen's rights. This

Reconstruction By Eric Foner Analysis
Within the preface of Eric Foner's A Short History of Reconstruction, Foner details the distinct
characteristics of the ever–changing era of Reconstruction, taking place after the Civil War. The
always–changing definitions of history have transformed the process of understanding this time
period (Foner, xi). Because of this, the Preface, written by Foner in 1990, illustrates the drastically
different viewpoints of the schools of thought found during the Reconstruction period. The Preface
is divided into four different sections; each section giving the reader a better understanding of the
different interpretations. These four sections are: The Dunning School during the 1900's, the
Progressive School in the 1920's and 1930's, the Revisionists ... Show more content on

As the wave of new politics and social attitudes, the Revisionists crippled all standing
interpretations, leading to a drastically different account of the Reconstruction. Depicting the
Reconstruction as a time for incredible social and political growth for African Americans,
Revisionists strayed from the original negative connotations of Reconstruction. Within the new
revised Reconstruction, Johnson was no longer the courageous protector of the civil liberties of his
people, but rather a racist who failed to react to the predicaments at hand while in Presidency and
Radicals were no longer money–hungry capitalists of the North, but rather individuals dedicated to
advocacy for African Americans (Foner, xiii). Although using the Civil Rights Movement as the
backbone for the Revisionist era proved itself effective, there were still a group of individuals, Post–
Revisionists, who continued to view the changes during Reconstruction as a bland and inadequate

The Reconstruction Era Was A Success
The Reconstruction Era was a Success Shortly after the Civil War ended in 1867, President
Abraham Lincoln's new objective was to unify the union and the confederate states into what was
formerly known as the United States of America. This time period is known as the Reconstruction
Era, starting with the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House in 1865 and ending
with the implementation of the Compromise of 1877. The Reconstruction Era was a time period full
of political, economic, and social changes, some being temporary and some lasting to modern time.
Many modern ideas about freedom and political equality come from the positive results of
reconstruction. Reconstruction however did not successfully solve the problem of social inequality
between African Americans and White Southerners, but the goal of reconstruction was not to
promote social equality, it was to unify the union, which was accomplished. So, the Reconstruction
Era was not a failure, if anything, it was successful because it granted rights to African Americans
that they never had before, it started programs such as the Freedmen's Bureau to assist former slaves
and poor whites with education, and it met the goal of unification. Prior to the Reconstruction Era,
African Americans had extremely little rights in society and politics. However, the Reconstruction
Era granted several rights to African Americans that are still a part of The United States Constitution
today. The Thirteenth Amendment

The During The Reconstruction Era
During the Reconstruction era which occurred after the Civil War there was animosity between the
states as well as the debate over how freed slaves should be dealt with in terms of becoming citizens
with the same rights as the Constitution provided for whites. The government had to come up some
type of conditions which would attempt to allow the rebellious southern states back into the union.
During this time period President Abraham Lincoln appointed provisional military governors to
oversee the re–establishment of the southern states into the union as well as a functioning
government. Yet, during the late 1800's the Republicans ruled Congress and made efforts during the
Reconstruction end to ensure that everyone had the same equal rights by passing the Civil Rights
Bill to ensure that everyone had equal rights. This also led to questions as to what to do with the
recently freed blacks. The main problem was with the Southern states and getting them to except
black, so the government implemented laws and Constitutional Amendments which helped the
federal government with the enforcement of equal rights which would give blacks in the south the
rights to hold office and vote. This leads us to the freeman's Bureau which was also a part of the
Reconstruction Act. The Reconstruction act of 1867 required southern states to except and ratify the
14th Amendment granting equal protection for the freed blacks, and the 15th Amendment
guaranteed the right for blacks to vote. Blacks

Reconstruction DBQ After the Civil War, the era of reconstruction was a time for America to try
restructure and rebuild itself. To the United States demise, not much was actually reconstructed nor
bettered concerning the lives of American citizens. The main cause of a somewhat failed attempt at
reconstruction was the South, also known as the Confederates. Due to their recession towards
slavery and dehumanization of African Americans, the South was the killer of reconstruction. The
most prominent cause of the Civil War regarded the treatment of African Americans. The North
fought to end slavery and consider blacks equal to whites and on the contrary, the South fought to
continue slavery and keep the traditional practices used considering the treatment of blacks.

regarding sharecropping, farmers would usually have to give up around 50 to 60% of their harvested
crop leaving them poor and resourceless (Document B). Another way that the South killed
reconstruction was through voting practices. Confederates would violently force blacks into voting
for southern representatives and if they were strong enough to disregard their threats, it wasn't
uncommon that they would later be beaten, whipped, and attacked. (Document C) These practices

Reconstruction Era Of The United States And African...

  • 1. Reconstruction Era of the United States and African... 92. In 1865 an appointment was held between representatives of an African American community in Savannah, Georgia and Edwin Staunton, Secretary of War, and Major General Sherman concerning topics of the freedman in Georgia. Land was set aside, 40 acres, and a mule that could no longer be used by the Army to establish a community of their own. 1. Black leaders believed that owning land was essential to freedom because by them owning their own land they would be able to support themselves by themselves. 2. Blacks understand their relationship to the national government as the Civil War drew to a close as being dependent upon their freedom. Q: Why 40 acres and a broken down mule? Do you believe they deserved more/less land? Did they not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 95. This was a sharecropping contract between Thomas J. Ross, a land owner, and 8 freedmen. The contract set the rules, regulations, and remunerations for sharecropping Ross's land. 1. The contract limits the freedom of the laborers in that they are still under the power of the land owner, with essentially the same rules as being a slave except they were getting paid in the crop for their work. 2. The benefits for the freed people of the sharecropping arrangement the security of land to work and half the harvest, the risks of the sharecropping arrangement would have been the chance of little crop and still being dependant on the Whites. Q: Do you feel as though sharecropping as a whole, with the good and the bad, was a good idea? 96. During the Reconstruction period Elizabeth Staunton demanded the idea of equality for women. In her essay she expressed ways that men and women are equal but not seen as being so, she also believed that women should be able to vote. 1. Stanton defined the "social revolution" the United States underwent after the Civil War as because it went deep down to the very foundation of society. 2. Stanton believed that industrial freedom within the family could be established by first changing the laws and public opinion. • 2. Essay on Two Part of the United States' Reconstruction Era In the United States' history, the Reconstruction Era had two senses. From 1865 to 1877 was the first, which involved the post Civil War action. The second sense, focused on the transformation of the Southern United States from 1863 to 1877 with the Congress directing the issue of reconstruction of state and society ("Reconstruction Era"). Frederick Jackson Turner argued that the frontier was the chief determinant in American history ("Frederick Jackson Turner"). Both the Reconstruction impact and Frederick Jackson Turner's thesis play a role in the environment during the Economic Revolution. Reconstruction took placed in the South from 1865 to 1880. It impacted the United States' history by holding the South back economically behind the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reconstruction had achieved much despite its obvious weaknesses. Schools that were built to provide education for both blacks and poor whites, the roads constructed, the protection given to life, an property were all indeed major achievements of the government (Pink Monkey). Frederick Jackson Turner had a thesis that also provided the environment for the Economic Revolution. He thesis accounted for why the people of America and the American government were so divergent from their European equivalents. There were many people that believed that the frontier's end symbolized the start of a new stage in American life. These people also believed that America must expand over seas. There were others that had views of this exposition as the drive for a "new wave in the history of Untied States imperialism" (Frontier Thesis). A man named William Appleman Williams, who led the "Wisconsin School" of diplomatic historians, argued that the frontier thesis encouraged American expansion overseas. Williams had viewed Turner's frontier thesis as a way to influence action against totalitarianism, advocate democracy through both of the world wars, and affirm the spending on foreign aid. However, Frederick Jackson Turner's thesis, in comparison to Theodore Roosevelt's work, The Winning of the West, a greater emphasis was placed not on territorial subjugation, but on the evolution of American republicanism (Frontier Thesis). • 3. Essay On Failure Of Reconstruction Even though African–American's rights made some progress during the Reconstruction Era, most of them were insignificant and never truly effective in their lives. The emancipation of slaves was one of the great stakes of the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era, but it was a failure as well. Many Northern leaders weren't Abolitionists but didn't want to lose the support of their electors. Even Abraham Lincoln (as well as his successor Andrew Jonshon) was arguably a white supremacist, even though he passed Abolitionist laws that benefitted slaves. But he would have rather sent them to other countries, so that they wouldn't be his problem anymore as his projects to send freedmen in colonies in Central African and Haitian colonies show. Furthermore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The following twelve years were a first attempt at a Reconstruction, a decade of many changes for the South, for the nation and for former slaves. Unfortuantely, it was only also a decade of conflict: the conflict between the North and the South transfering from the battle field to a political one. If they did find a way to compromise in 1877 with the presidential election of Hayes, freedmen's hope of a better life that had been fed throughout the Civil War by Lincoln came to a crushing halt. This Reconstruction was arguably a failure in that department in spite of the myriad of legislations passed in that time. In the manner of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 that emancipated slaves but didn't free slaves residing in border states fighting for the Union, nor those residing in Southern states already under the control of the Union, the Reconstruction effectively changed very little for the United States, and the South remained a profondouly racist society while the North's will for racial equity had ... • 4. What Is The Reconstruction Dbq The Reconstruction Grace Barar January 14, 2016 Although the reconstruction did unify the United States and passed the 14th and 15th amendments, reconstruction failed on many other vital issues. The radical republican legislation that promised freedom and equality for all was far from a reality for black Americans. Legislation failed to protect former slaves from white supremacy, and persecution. The entire social and cultural backbone of the south needed reform in order for African Americans to enjoy the freedom and equality that this nation promised, unfortunately this change did not come during the reconstruction. In 1877 president Hayes removed federal troops from the south, almost immediately former confederates and slave owners returned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Was Reconstruction A Success Or Failure Essay Reconstructions Successes, Failures, and Legacy The Reconstruction Era of 1865–1877 proved to be one of triumph and disappointments for many. The end of the Civil War brought on feelings of freedom and the vision of great things on the horizon for slaves. At the same time, feelings of despair and that the Civil War was a "lost cause" was a common feeling among many white Americans. Freedom, even though still limited, was viewed as a success by black people. The organization of the Freedmen's Bureau was viewed as a success. The Freedmen's Bureau provided former slaves and underprivileged white southern people social, educational, and economics services. "Blacks won election to the southern state governments and even to the U.S. Congress during this period" (Reconstruction, 1). The passing of the 14th and 15th Amendment were also viewed as successes. These laws protected civil rights and allowed for voting, no matter the color of your skin. The Enforcement Act of 1870 was also viewed as a success because it upheld the 13th Amendment that gave slaves freedom. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The "black codes" can be viewed as a failure because blacks, even after Reconstruction began, still had stipulations. They could be arrested for not providing proof of employment or residence or for just acting out. They, then, were forced into "labor on farms or road crews" (The American Journey: A History of the United States, 362). Violence and terror came in the form of the Ku Klux Klan. The Klan's goal was to intimidate black people and deter them from voting and seeking a better life for themselves. Some other failures were Jim Crow Laws, because they encouraged racial segregation, and continued ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Modernization Of Reconstruction Era A great deal of the confusion over whether or not the Reconstruction Era is considered modernization is because most people believe that modernization is only a present–day phenomenon. The dictionary definition of modernization is as follows, "the process of adapting something to modern needs or habits." Today, my argument is how the Reconstruction Era is the epitome of modernization. There are multiple things that contributed to the modernization of the Reconstruction Era, such as the economic system changing (the Gilded Age) and societal changes (radical and social modernization). Personally, I believe that the societal component of the Reconstruction Era had the most impact. From radical republicans, the passing of the 14th Amendment, Jim Crow laws, and the court case Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896. There were many changes in society that helped shape the United States into what it is today. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you are modernizing something, you are advancing that area, and simplifying processes. During Reconstruction, the United States underwent a lot of historically significant changes. The Reconstruction Era lasted fourteen years, starting in 1863 and ending in 1877. The major changes of Reconstruction began after the Civil War in hopes to "reunite" the union and confederacy. This is when a group called the radical republicans came about. They believed that African Americans were entitled to the same rights that white Americans had. Radical republicans also believed the southern states that seceded from the union should be punished for leaving and their roles in the war. Thaddeus Stevens, a lawyer played a major role in this group. Stevens even came up with idea to confiscate the land of planters who left the union and divide it among freedmen and northern migrants whom were going to the south. His idea failed to pass, as it seemed a little too ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Why Is Reconstruction Too Conservative Reconstruction was a time of bringing the union back together. However it ultimately ended up failing. Overall reconstruction was too conservative. Although reconstruction failed a few important things did come out of it. "The establishment of an educational system was one of the most striking successes of the republican regime," notes Thomas Holt, "Its creation firmly established the principle of free education in a state that had not had such a system before the war." Although legislatures had many differences, they were able to come together to make education available for all. The establishment of a public school system was huge success of reconstruction. However schools were still segregated and not at all equal. Although it may not have worked as well as it should of, it introduced free public education into states where there was no such thing pre–war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These amendments gave basic rights to african americans. The 13th amendment abolished slavery in the United States, which led to the 14th amendment giving citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and the 15th amendment which gave all african american males the right to vote. While these things were good, reconstruction was still far too conservative. Freedmen in the north were still being treated terribly. As C. Vann Woodward writes, "The counter of reconstruction was well under way by the time the amendment was ratified in March 1870, and in that year it took on new life in several quarters." One way was the Klu Klux Klan and other terrorist groups. These groups used intimidation and terror to sway the votes of republican voters and leaders. • 8. Reconstruction Of The Civil War Prior to the Civil War, the United States' economy was essentially agricultural based; slavery in the South was the key player in its prosperous economy. Hence, it is no wonder the South stood in defense of slavery's permanence when challenged with the demand for abolition. The Southern proslavery Confederate states fought against the Northern antislavery Union states during the Civil War. The Union prevailed in the war and once the Confederates seceded and left the United States with a new predicament: The Reconstruction Era. In which, the Union needed to find a way to readmit the Confederates back into the nation in accord to Union principles. Essentially, although the ex–Confederates rejoined the Union, the reconstruction of the South was unsuccessful. Presidential, Congressional, and Radical reconstruction individually served to the collaborative failure of readmitting the South based on Northern ideals. Furthermore, Presidential Reconstruction was futile in the reformation of the South. During this phase of reconstruction, Abraham Lincoln proposed his Ten Percent Plan in which he strategized to readmit the South into the Union by having at least ten percent of the Confederate states vote back into the Union in exchange for amnesty so long as they accepted the thirteenth amendment which abolished slavery. However, the South rejected Lincoln's plan and consequently congress came up with the Wade–Davis Bill, which proposed that, in order to be reinstated, the male ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Sharecroppers: Reconstruction Era of the United States and... After the devastation left from the Civil War, many field owners looked for new ways to replace their former slaves with field hands for farming and production use. From this need for new field hands came sharecroppers, a "response to the destitution and disorganized" agricultural results of the Civil War (Wilson 29). Sharecropping is the working of a piece of land by a tenant in exchange for a portion of the crops that they bring in for their landowners. These farmhands provided their labor, while the landowners provided living accommodations for the worker and his family, along with tools, seeds, fertilizers, and a portion of the crops that they had harvested that season. A sharecropper had "no entitlement to the land that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even having sufficient clothing at all was a struggle for the family. The clothing that they did have was "coarse, crude, and not warm enough" (Gentry 138). The typical attire for men was "denim overalls", and women wore "dresses made out of cheap cotton goods" (Gentry 138). With children constantly growing and maturing, having suitable clothing for them was demanding. During these times, minimizing was the key for most families. Often this meant that items such as "shoes, socks and underwear were accessories" if any at all (Gentry 138). Due to this lack in appropriate clothing, many times "the family was held back from ‘social doin's' because of their unkempt appearance" (Corder and Miller 42). Along with the emotional embarrassment of their personal appearance, sharecroppers and their families suffered physical consequences. Often a lack of inadequate clothing left them more susceptible to illness, and in their circumstances, that was a risk they could not afford to take. Another important factor for the substandard conditions of sharecroppers was their significant lack of food. Having to survive off of low supplies of food is harmful to anyone, but to people who are lacking in so many other areas, it could be devastating. Sharecroppers everywhere were already being cheated of how much of the seasons harvest was actually theirs, in addition to the impractical rules of what they could and could not own while they lived ... • 10. Reconstruction Of The United States Schutz, Jackson CRN 36889 T/R 9:35 20 September 2015 Reconstructing the Unconstructable Gunshots rang throughout American soil in the year 1861. The seven southern states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America. The remaining northern states were known as the Union. The central issue between the Union and the Confederacy was slavery which led to America's bloodiest war, lasting four years and leaving roughly six hundred–thousand people dead. The North was victorious and the South's infrastructure was severely crippled. All slaves were set free and a month before the official end to the war, Lincoln was assassinated, leaving Vice– President Andrew Johnson to take over the Presidency. The next task for America to tackle was the South's reconstruction which would continue until 1877. Although reconstruction made the South go through many changes leading to lots of progress, it also had some fallbacks from the resentment present in the South. The 13th Amendment was passed saying, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Upon the emancipation of all black slaves inside the United States, children flocked to newly established schools made possible by missionaries, groups of ex–slaves, and even the Freedman's Bureau. Congress set up the Freedman's Bureau to aid black former slaves in the South. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Redemption, Reconstruction, and Recover demonstrate how the Reconstruction era prevailed. The Reconstruction era did redeem and reconstruct the United States but did not recover it. However, the United States still hasn't fully recovered because we still struggle with discrimination. For example, during the era, slaves were freed from slavery and received suffrage (the addition of 3 new amendments to the Constitution). But, the whites were not able to come to terms with the new Constitution. As a result, they continued to discriminate against the former slaves because of their new rights. Short Answer Using the information from your textbook and classroom discussion, prepare a minimum of 200– word response to the following questions: 1. To what extent did the Era of Reconstruction create a New South? On December 8, 1863, approximately 16 months before the North defeated the South in the Civil War, Lincoln issued a proclamation that laid out his vision of Reconstruction. For example, laws were passed requiring Southern states to adopt new constitutions in conformity with the U.S. Constitution, and to ratify the 14th Amendment and grant blacks the right to vote. Reconstruction After The Civil War Reconstruction refers to the time period after the Civil War when the Union worked to reintegrate the Southern states that had seceded from the union, and were eventually defeated in the Civil War. The Reconstruction era occurred between 1865–1877 (American Destiny, pg. 409). There were various plans on how to approach and follow through with Reconstruction from President Lincoln's, President Johnson's, Congresses', and the radicals' plans on how to best execute the reintegration of the defeated Southern states. Lincoln's plan was a mild approach, as he only required that ten percent of each defeated Southern state take a loyalty oath to the United States. • 15. The United States And The Reconstruction Era The United States of America faced great tensions throughout the 18th century because of the division on the issue of slavery, this was reflected through the way that African Americans were treated up until the Reconstruction. In the early 18th century if one was from African ancestry, they were condemned as inferior in the eyes of the white man. This would continue for over a century and a half into the Reconstruction Era in 1865. On the other hand, there was an abolitionist movement led by both black woman and men, and white woman and men. This movement was formed to completely abolish slavery, and used tactics of sharing experiences that slaves faced, and one of the most recognized advocates was Frederick Douglass. However, southerners did not agree with the abolitionist movement because they saw slavery as essential to their lives because it made their economy stable and flourish, and saw the Reconstruction Era as an encroachment on their freedom. Further, the Reconstruction Era was a hopeful time for emancipated slaves, but encountered problems because they saw freedom as... Many Americans did not agree on the issue of slavery in the late 18th century, and still felt this way after the Reconstruction Era. • 16. The End Of The Reconstruction In the 1860's there was an Era that started called the reconstruction. The main purpose for the reconstruction was to give African–American people full political and civil equality. However, it was very tough to do this, especially since most white in the south didn't want the African– Americans to have the same rights as themselves. During this Era there were multiple good things that happened, yet, there were also many bad things that happened. For instance, during the reconstruction the 14th amendment was passed so the African–American would get equal rights, but during the Era groups such as Ku Klux Klan was created, also during this time the economic problems weren't solved. Since the main point of the reconstruction was to make African– Americans to gain equality, the 14th amendment that was passed in 1868 was very positive. The 14th amendment was a very important time during the reconstruction, since the amendment made it illegal to treat different races unequally. However, although some people thought that the 14th amendment was going to make everything good in the society, and that the African–Americans would be treated fully equally wasn't completely correct. For example, although the 14th amendment was passed, and made it illegal to treat different races unequally, some people still did. Nevertheless, the African–Americans did gain more rights than they had before, and were treated more equally after the 14th amendment passed. Although the 14th amendment was going ... This movement was begun by President Abraham Lincoln and continued after his assassination by his successor, Andrew Johnson. The focus of this era was on an economic, political, and social level in the South. Numerous bills and acts were passed throughout the years to assist in strengthening and enforcing rules that would essentially turn back the clock for the South. The Compromise of 1877 played a large role in Reconstruction, stating that the Republicans could vote for another Republican to become a nation leader, as long as they assisted in rebuilding the South ("Reconstruction"). Another important act that positively affected the nation was the Enforcement Act of 1870. This act banned the use of terror, force, or bribery to prevent people from voting because of their race. Overall, it helped reinforce some of the positive effects of this era (Cas). Possibly the the most important legacies left from the Reconstruction Era include amendments 13, 14, and 15. • 20. Effects Of The Reconstruction Era The Reconstruction era was the period that followed the end of the Civil War whose purpose was to reconstruct the United States. This was done to help rebuild the South and bring it back into the Union. The 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments gave African Americans some civil liberties, they prohibited slavery, gave national citizenship for every person that was born in the United States, and voting rights can not be denied because of their race or color. Looking at this era, I will discuss how it affected the society of the Americans, the economy and the laws that were passed. Although the Reconstruction Era tried to help from the end of the Civil War into the early twentieth–century it resulted a failure to establish the civil rights for the African Americans. The Americans in the South felt humiliated and were against the decision of the government to give certain rights given to the African Americans. For this reason, many whites joined some groups who were against the freed slaves such as the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan was a political terrorist group whose purpose was to intimidate the black Americans after the 15th amendment was ratified and they were given the right to vote. "The Klan had just appeared there in 1868, using intimidation, arson, whippings, sexual assault, and murder to keep potential Republican voters away from the polls in that year's election" (Political Terrorism during Reconstruction, 1). This shows the actions that this social group took to terrorize the Black Americans to avoid their participation in the elections. In April 1865, before his assassination Abraham Lincoln declared that he had hope that there would be no "bloody work" after the war, but most of it "visited upon the freedman as Northerners and Southerners–black and white– struggled over ... the place of African Americans in American society (The Meaning of Reconstruction, 302). • 23. Reconstruction Dbq Essay Reconstruction is defined as a thing that has been rebuilt after being damaged or destroyed. The United States from 1860 to 1877 is known as the era of Reconstruction because of the relentless attempts to reconsolidate the country. After times of war and disagreements, political and social developments contributed to the extreme changes that occurred in both the North and the South. Years before the Civil War started, the economic interests of Americans in the South differed from those in the North. This aided the start of tensions, and sectionalism became enormously prevalent in the election of 1860. Abraham Lincoln's triumph in that election triggered frustration and a sense of unfairness from the South. His political republican views prompted southern states to try and succeed. The End Of The Civil War After the Civil War, the fact that slavery was abolished might seem to be the end of the story; however, the problems derived from the abolishment of slavery had yet to be addressed. During the Reconstruction Era, these problems were reflected on the political, social, and economic aspects. Which played several major roles in shaping America from the late nineteenth into the twentieth centuries. These three aspects, political, social, and economical, affected one another so much that they were inseparable. The beginning leniency of Andrew Johnson all the way to the Confederates and later the political conflict between Johnson and the Radical Republicans, and lastly, the political struggle between Republicans and Democrats. It all resulted in the ever–changing policies toward the freed people. These different policies had strong effects on the society, especially the freed people. Although some of the policies, such as the abolition of slavery and several Constitutional Amendments were beneficial to the rights of freed people, the sudden increase of freed people brought about the separation of black and white and many other social issues. Reconstruction And Reconstruction The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, issued by Abraham Lincoln, launched the United States into a groundbreaking point in history where blacks were no longer to be considered property, but free individuals. Following the Civil War, The Reconstruction Era was led by President Andrew Johnson and spanned the time between 1865 and 1877. This period was an attempt to rejoin the Southern Confederates with the Union, as well as to haul blacks from a status of subjugation to become active participants in the American society. On a broad scale, Reconstruction helped blacks to gain freedom; they obtained citizenship and had a political role in society. However, on a narrower level, this period failed in achieving its goal. Blacks continued to be segregated socially and weren't treated as equals to their white counterparts. During the Reconstruction era, a series of laws were passed to give blacks a position in political American society. These laws were implemented into the Constitution as the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. The thirteenth amendment was added at the start of Reconstruction in 1865. • 33. Eric Foner A Short History Of Reconstruction Analysis Eric Foner's A Short History of Reconstruction is a shortened version of his Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863–1877; however, in the shorter version certain broad themes unified the crucial narrative. His first theme is the midst of the black experience, second theme is to trace the ways Southern society as a whole was remodeled, third theme is the evolution of racial attitudes and patterns of race relations, and the fourth theme is the emergence during the Civil War and Reconstruction. This narration of Reconstruction begins not in 1865, but with the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. This was done to stress the importance of the Proclamation in unifying two major themes, grass–roots black activity and the newly empowered national state and to indicate that Reconstruction was the beginning of a broadened historical process: the adjustment of American society to the end of slavery. Foner's A Short History of Reconstruction verifies the authors prevailing leadership in historical revisionism. His extensive knowledge alters the scrutiny of the historical standpoint, stimulating students and intellectuals to reconsider the assumptions of prominent reconstruction works from foregoing eras such as those that influenced our understanding of the Reconstruction era. Not just religious beliefs, moral beliefs also. It left both sides, north and south struggling, trying to figure out what their next move towards reuniting the divided America was going to be. The period following the end of the Civil War would become known as the "Reconstruction Era." An era that raised just as many questions as it did answers. A reconstruction of America that seems to carry on many decades later. The reconstruction of America would decide how the south would rejoin the Union, what was to become of the nearly 3 million black slaves freed, how America was going to recover from such a devastating internal war. There appears to be phases that the Reconstruction Era went through, roughly three of them. The first is that of the Presidential Reconstruction, it lead to a more radical Republican party. After such we find ourselves in what was to be known as the Radical Reconstruction. A period where the blacks found their voices being heard. Finally we lead up to the end of the Reconstruction–era. It is said that the reconstruction lasted from 1865 to 1877, however it can be said that, to this very day, some reconstruction is still ongoing. It all starts with the Presidential Reconstruction. • 35. Reconstruction Dbq Essay After the Civil War, the state of Civil Rights, much like the South, was in ruins. The era after the war witnessed one of the most open and widespread discussions of equality since the founding of the United States. Throughout the 100 year period between Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement, Civil Rights have been positively redefined despite much opposition. While the Reconstruction era after the Civil War presented many challenges towards the advancement of Civil Rights, there were many examples of success in the progression of black rights. Near the end of the Civil War, the Reconstruction period sought to reunite the very divided North and South. A major goal for the North was to abolish slavery and to eliminate this toxic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the Civil Rights movement, there were many times where Constitutional law was redefined in order to eliminate the unjust treatment of blacks. However, much of the change that marked this era came in the form of writings(and speeches) from leaders in the African American community. W.E.B Du Bois, a prominent African American writer and activist, understood that change would not "come in [a] moment" (Document 6). He felt that the "thinking class of American Negroes... [should] ask of this nation three things: 1. The right to vote / 2. Civic equality / 3. The education of youth according to ability" (Document 6). Du Bois helped the redefining of Civil Rights, albeit slowly, as he called on everyone(especially blacks) to continue fighting for their rights "in season and out of season" (Document 6). In his opinion, the advancement of Civil Rights can not be limited to the voting season and requires sensitive attention until full equality is reached. This specific work by Du Bois redefines Civil Rights as it inspires the future of the Civil Rights Movement and activists, and calls on blacks to demand the same rights and opportunities(for education) as their white counterparts. While writings like Du Bois' stood as important pieces in the positive redefining of Civil Rights, progression of Civil Rights for black Americans was heavily impacted by the altering of the constitutional meaning behind "separate but equal" (Document 8). Plessy v. Ferguson was a 1896 Supreme Court case that concluded that the separation of races did not imply inferiority. This ideal stood until 1954 the concept of "separate but equal" arose in the decision of Brown v. Board of Education. Eventually, the court decided that "in the field of public education the doctrine of 'separate but equal' has no place [and] separate educational facilities are inherently unequal" (Document 8). • 36. Reconstruction Process Of Reconstruction After the Civil War, the South was in ruins and America was on the road to Reconstruction. America was now faced with the challenges of overcoming Southern resentment, restoring the Union, and determining the meaning of black freedom. The process of reconstruction would be complicated and complex and would involve readmitting the Southern states that had seceded from the Union; physically reconstructing the South; and integrating the freedmen into America's society. Various plans for Reconstruction were involved: Lincoln's ten percent plan, the Wade–Davis Bill, Johnson's Reconstruction Plan, and the Congressional Reconstruction Plan. Although the blacks gained their freedom after the war, their lives did not change drastically. The Reconstruction Era had brought upon change to the southern states as freedmen were able to work for themselves and had the ability to have their own families, but that does not mean that they were equal to the whites. The Thirteenth Amendment that was passed under Lincoln's presidency formally abolished slavery and involuntary servitude but when his presidency was passed on to Andrew Johnson, the freedmen did not have as many rights. He did not pay any mind to the newly freed blacks in the South and in turn, the Southern states were able to pass the "black codes" which restricted the freedmen's rights. This placed the blacks under a strict law and although they were not slaves anymore, they were living in fear. It wasn't until the radical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Reconstruction By Eric Foner Analysis Within the preface of Eric Foner's A Short History of Reconstruction, Foner details the distinct characteristics of the ever–changing era of Reconstruction, taking place after the Civil War. The always–changing definitions of history have transformed the process of understanding this time period (Foner, xi). Because of this, the Preface, written by Foner in 1990, illustrates the drastically different viewpoints of the schools of thought found during the Reconstruction period. The Preface is divided into four different sections; each section giving the reader a better understanding of the different interpretations. These four sections are: The Dunning School during the 1900's, the Progressive School in the 1920's and 1930's, the Revisionists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the wave of new politics and social attitudes, the Revisionists crippled all standing interpretations, leading to a drastically different account of the Reconstruction. Depicting the Reconstruction as a time for incredible social and political growth for African Americans, Revisionists strayed from the original negative connotations of Reconstruction. Within the new revised Reconstruction, Johnson was no longer the courageous protector of the civil liberties of his people, but rather a racist who failed to react to the predicaments at hand while in Presidency and Radicals were no longer money–hungry capitalists of the North, but rather individuals dedicated to advocacy for African Americans (Foner, xiii). Although using the Civil Rights Movement as the backbone for the Revisionist era proved itself effective, there were still a group of individuals, Post– Revisionists, who continued to view the changes during Reconstruction as a bland and inadequate time in American ... • 38. The Reconstruction Era Was A Success The Reconstruction Era was a Success Shortly after the Civil War ended in 1867, President Abraham Lincoln's new objective was to unify the union and the confederate states into what was formerly known as the United States of America. This time period is known as the Reconstruction Era, starting with the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House in 1865 and ending with the implementation of the Compromise of 1877. The Reconstruction Era was a time period full of political, economic, and social changes, some being temporary and some lasting to modern time. Many modern ideas about freedom and political equality come from the positive results of reconstruction. Reconstruction however did not successfully solve the problem of social inequality between African Americans and White Southerners, but the goal of reconstruction was not to promote social equality, it was to unify the union, which was accomplished. So, the Reconstruction Era was not a failure, if anything, it was successful because it granted rights to African Americans that they never had before, it started programs such as the Freedmen's Bureau to assist former slaves and poor whites with education, and it met the goal of unification. Prior to the Reconstruction Era, African Americans had extremely little rights in society and politics. However, the Reconstruction Era granted several rights to African Americans that are still a part of The United States Constitution today. The Thirteenth Amendment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The During The Reconstruction Era During the Reconstruction era which occurred after the Civil War there was animosity between the states as well as the debate over how freed slaves should be dealt with in terms of becoming citizens with the same rights as the Constitution provided for whites. The government had to come up some type of conditions which would attempt to allow the rebellious southern states back into the union. During this time period President Abraham Lincoln appointed provisional military governors to oversee the re–establishment of the southern states into the union as well as a functioning government. Yet, during the late 1800's the Republicans ruled Congress and made efforts during the Reconstruction end to ensure that everyone had the same equal rights by passing the Civil Rights Bill to ensure that everyone had equal rights. This also led to questions as to what to do with the recently freed blacks. The main problem was with the Southern states and getting them to except black, so the government implemented laws and Constitutional Amendments which helped the federal government with the enforcement of equal rights which would give blacks in the south the rights to hold office and vote. This leads us to the freeman's Bureau which was also a part of the Reconstruction Act. The Reconstruction act of 1867 required southern states to except and ratify the 14th Amendment granting equal protection for the freed blacks, and the 15th Amendment guaranteed the right for blacks to vote. • 40. Reconstruction Dbq Essay Reconstruction DBQ After the Civil War, the era of reconstruction was a time for America to try restructure and rebuild itself. To the United States demise, not much was actually reconstructed nor bettered concerning the lives of American citizens. The main cause of a somewhat failed attempt at reconstruction was the South, also known as the Confederates. Due to their recession towards slavery and dehumanization of African Americans, the South was the killer of reconstruction. The most prominent cause of the Civil War regarded the treatment of African Americans. The North fought to end slavery and consider blacks equal to whites and on the contrary, the South fought to continue slavery and keep the traditional practices used considering the treatment of blacks. Finishing victorious, the North tried their best to enforce humane treatment towards African Americans yet the South merely pushed these laws to the side. Consequently, the South came up with their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the cycle in which workers would be constantly bombarded with large amounts of debt, they had no other choice then to keep working and try to stabilize their finances. With the little amount of necessities given, these workers were essentially held as slaves. Adding to the economic issues regarding sharecropping, farmers would usually have to give up around 50 to 60% of their harvested crop leaving them poor and resourceless (Document B). Another way that the South killed reconstruction was through voting practices. Confederates would violently force blacks into voting for southern representatives and if they were strong enough to disregard their threats, it wasn't uncommon that they would later be beaten, whipped, and attacked. (Document C) These practices went against the constitution and laws created after the Civil War and therefore are deemed to have taken part in diminishing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
