Death versus Death–but the Points go to Dickinson
Emily Dickinson was born in a time when not many women involved themselves in poetry or any form of intellectual capability. Despite this, she
was such a wonderful poet that her poetry rivaled Whitman's. Of course, she was never able to rival him because she chose not to publish her poetry
in her lifetime. Once the world saw her poetry, however, it was shocked by the literary genius who had lived in seclusion for a good majority of her
life. Her style is very distinguishable through it is excessive but purposeful punctuation and 8–6–8–6 rhyme that matches church songs and patriotic
songs like "Amazing Grace" and "Glory to God on High." The church influenced more than her style, however, as much of her subject matter pertains to
her unorthodox beliefs. Other subjects include hope and sometimes humor, but her ideas on death are both very interesting and complicated. Dickinson
does not make light of death, but she uses her poems as her diary to record her thoughts on death. She moves rapidly from thinking death is passive to
thinking it is an amazing honor, but she also thinks of it in a terrified sense. Emily Dickinson's views on death are uncertain, she varies between
finding death casual, positive and romantic, and negative in a series of several poems
Many people may fear death, but Emily Dickinson sometimes expressed in her

The Death Of Death And Death
On the topic of death, a question had been made on whether immortality is preferable to dying. In Plato's Phaedo, Socrates' death scene, Socrates has
one last philosophical conversation with his friends about what happens to the soul when it leaves the body after death. Socrates believes that the soul
is immortal, meaning that it will live on even when the body does not. The themes in Phaedo are similar to those in Leo Tolstoy's "TheDeath of Ivan
Ilych," which tells the story of a man named Ivan who suffers from an illness and eventually dies. At first, Ivan believes that he is living a pleasurable
life; he is married with children and works as a judge, however, his illness consumes everything he thought to be good and continually suffers ... Show

From this, it must mean that people's souls are still alive after the body has died. Along with the majority, I am scared of what it will be like to die.
It's not that I fear what comes after death, because I believe that there is something waiting for us when we leave this life, but it's the possibility of a
painful death that makes dying seem bad. Yet, I would still choose death over being immortal because I would only have to experience certain pain
once, and then my soul would be free and move on. But if I were immortal, there would be the potential of continually suffering and not being able to
escape it. An important reason for why I would reject immortality is that I would out live my loved ones; I would out live any future children or
spouses, and when they die, I will be stuck on Earth. Yes, I would meet new people and come to cherish them as well, but it is only a matter of
time before we are separated again, forever. And with no one to be by my side in times of pain and suffering, whether it be physical or
psychological, I will have to experience it by myself. Tolstoy writes "he had to live thus all alone on the brink of an abyss, with no one who
understood him or pitied him" (146). Tolstoy is saying that Ivan believes he is alone because no one seems to care or understand the pain that he is
going through. With immortality, it is inevitable that one will suffer, but that suffering will only increase and cause distress because no one wants to

Analysis Of The Poem ' The Death Of Death '
The combination of how the subject matter is conveyed by the narrator, and the emotions which are built through poetic devices contribute to
constructing the message the author intended for each poem. Throughout Drummer Hodge, Hardy appears to express the idea that dying in battle is no
way to achieve immortality through the memory of others, as every death is unnecessary and soon forgotten to the land. He frequently infers that
Hodge is consumed by the landscape, becoming a part of it as he slowly loses everything he was. Hardy reinforces this idea that a soldiers death is
meaningless and not at all remembered, by cleverly turning the phrase, 'being laid to rest,' which indicates the care and effort put into burring the
deceased, into one which demonstrates the meaninglessness of his death. This can be seen in the first line of the poem, "They throw in Drummer
Hodge, to rest," where he is not laid to rest, but thrown illustrating the fact that the soldier is totally disregarded and not remembered in any
significant way. Brooke however, constructs a romanticized message of remembrance and honour for the soldier. The Soldier seems to convey the
message that death in battle is an honourable death, which serves to repay a man's homeland for all it has given him, an action for which, he will be
remembered. He continually refers to the transformation which occurs upon a soldier's death, entailing the change of the very soil he falls on, to
English soil. This implication

The Death Of Death
As my eyes skimmed over the words printed on the pages of the oddly intriguing book, I experienced a slight sting of realisation within the depths of
my soul. A pitiless dark cold. I had always been under the impression would be like this. My life would come to a halt, but nevertheless my
consciousness would subsist in the void. Though it was quite unusual that afterlife would look so similar to my office.

The deceased are in most cases despondent. This reaction itself is a perfectly normal, since it essentially stems not entirely from the unfavourable
"why" of your own death but more so the maddening "how". Dying without any warning, for example being totalled by a large truck, may leave you
with the sensation of being robbed of time. Though, if you had the unfortunate experience of dying, lying on a an uncomfortable bed that had
distinctly been allocated as the very place your life would end, with dozens of tubes stemming from each orifice, the likelihood of you transferring the
depression that you experienced in your previous life to...now, is quite high. Regardless your heart will most likely be heavy with sadness and regret.
During this period of your now non–existent life, it is of UT most importance to take comfort in the fact that since you are categorised in the
delighted group of the deceased, there is little that can get worse. The only way is up, though keep in mind for a prolonged period of time "up" will
be perceived as an extension of "down" that never

The Death Of Death And Death
Death affects people in a variety of ways, often differing throughout cohorts and cultures. Death does not affect everyone in the same way, and often
life experiences have a key role in shaping how we view death. Most of these interviewees were from rural Iowa, and could show a contrast from the
single interviewee from Tennessee. For this paper, I intend to showcase how several individuals can viewdeath in a variety of ways, and how they can
each face their own unique set of problems and resources that can impact their death experience. Among these factors includes life experiences and age.
In preparing for this paper I interviewed four individuals that I know quite well and had assumed would be able to get all questions answered
easily. While all individuals were interviewed, some questions they were uncomfortable with and declined to answer. N. is a fifteen year old
Christian male from a small rural town in Iowa. A. is a nineteen year old Christian female from a different small rural town in Iowa, about fifteen miles
away. P. is a 43 year old male from the same rural town in Iowa as N. He is also N.'s father and could show an interesting cohort contrast. M. is a 65
year old female from Nashville, Tennessee and now has lived in the same town as N. and P. for several years. M. also declined to answer any personal
religious questions for this paper.
While most of these interviewees were not able to completely articulate how they viewed death, they put it into a context that

Death And Dying, Death, And Death
Christopher Bullock had said it best in his work Cobler of Preston , " 'Tis impossible to be sure of any thing but Death and Taxes."(Shapiro, 2008)
Prior to Elisabeth KГјbler–Ross' bestseller novel On Death and Dying, death was to be done alone. Death was a taboo subject for society. Death is
the end result of many different factors effecting the body in a way it (the body) can't handle it any longer. Speaking in a medical light, there are two
types of death, clinical and biological.
"When a patient's breathing and heartbeat stop, clinical death occurs. This condition may be reversible through CPR and other treatments. However,
when the brain cells die, biological death occurs. This usually happens within 10 minutes of clinical death, and is not reversible. In fat, brain cells
will begin to die after 4 to 6 minutes without fresh oxygen supplied from air breathed in and carried to the brain by circulating blood. Cardiovascular
pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) consists of the actions you take to revive a person– or at least temporarily prevent biological death– by keeping the
person's heart and lungs working." (Limmer& O'Keefe, 2012, p. 1124)
The KГјbler– Ross model, or the five stages of grief, postulates, a series of emotions experienced by terminally ill patients prior to death, wherein the
five stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The model was first introduced by Swiss psychiatrist Elisabeth KГјbler–Ross in

Death Of Death By Emily Dickinson
Perspective of death There are many different ways to describe death and the emotional feelings that come with death. Poems are one of the best ways
to convey the process of death, the feelings that come with death, and impact of death. Emily Dickinson describes her own death in the poem,
"Because I could not stop for Death" and the general idea that life is mortal. However, the poem provides Dickinson immorality through the power of
her words. This poem describes death in a positive way by putting death in the form of man who has the persona of the gentlemen. Emily is actually a
ghost and describes her death spirituality; therefore, she examines what real death might be like. Finding the main ideas of the poem is hard to figure
out through the first line. This poem starts with the line 'Because I could not stop for Death' (Dickinson, Line 1) which gives the idea that the poem is
about death. Starting with the fact that Dickinson did not have a choice about death, and she is portraying that it is not up to individuals to control
their death. Dickinson even capitalizes the word Death, Carriage, Ourselves, and Immortality to emphasis death. Death is a man whose generosity
gives positive strength. Death rides in on a carriage that also brings immortality. The carriage is a different type of transportation for Dickinson and
brings her and Death to the next life. Dickinson implies death is not the end and immortality leads to eternal life. Dickinson and Death are together

expressive movements and of physiological movements and processes...It is a departure, a decease, a negativity to the unknown...a departure without a
return"(Levinas). Regardless of belief, death is the one equalizer common to man. There are countless stories attempting to illustrate or explain both the
feeling and the nature of death given many various outcomes, fortunate or unfortunate. One point remains consistent through all of them: death is
inevitable and no one can avoid it. Despite the fact that no man has ever evaded death, several people throughout the ages have unsuccessfully
endeavored to unearth the secret to immortality. In fact, the "legends connected with the discovery of North America" also include those of a French
explorer named Ponce de LeГіn who searched in sixteenth century Florida for the "Fountain of Youth" whose waters supposedly supplied vitality and
eternal life (Olschki). In the literary works of Godfather Death and Appointment in Samarra, both tell a morbid tale resulting in death. Viewing the
stories from a Christian worldview, both operate on false premises of superstition, man's nature to control his destiny, and fallible, finite thinking.

Death Of Death By Emily Dickinson
Emily Dickinson like many poets of her lifetime was misunderstood and isolated. Her poetry was reflection her frustrations and her obsession with
the unexplainable. She was rejected by society as well as her mentors due to her ideas and dark poetry. As time went by she became withdrawn,
devoting her life to perfectionalize her writing. It was during this period of isolation that Dickinson wrote some of her greatest work, for instance "
Because I Could Not Stop For Death" published in 1890 after her death. Personification, symbols, and the setting are use to illustrate and maintain the
strong theme of death through the poem.
Death is given human characteristics. Dickinson personifies death as a suitor who is kind and polite. He goes out of his way to take the poet on a
carriage ride. She is seduced by his charm and the poet gladly gives up her life to join him. Death drives without haste or force he is mindful of the
condition of the poet. She is slowly dying but she is relief and competent with the painless death. Once again death is personified as a dedicated lover
who is willing to do anything to take care of his beloved. "Death comes as a gentleman, motivated by humble intentions, and concerned only with
carrying the lady her bridal room in heaven...death–as–lover" (Griffith 56). As a the poem continues a drastic is changed is made and the poet is
betrayed by death and her chaperon "immortality". Death is now arrogant and malicious; when the poet becomes

The Theme Of Death And Death In Shakespeare's Hamlet
In Hamlet, Shakespeare depicts the diffusion side of the problematic part in the life of the hero who recoils and leads to his death. The use of death in
storytelling offers many pathways to character development and can also carry the theme of the story. Many stories can also be centered around death.
In the story of Hamlet, the story begins with the young prince depressed about the death of his father.
Prince Hamlet was ordinary boy just like any other. He was a smart and clever young man and was probably very kind to have many friends and a
girlfriend, but after the news of his father's death, he had changed. Hamlet soon began to shut himself in his room every night and wears nothing but
dark clothing. The death of his father ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
" I loved you not." Towards the middle of his play, Hamlet sees that his uncle appears to act suspicious and proceeds to walk out of the room. This
means that what the ghost said must be true and he may now proceed in getting his revenge. Even though the young prince believes that he is
pretending, it seems that between the death of his father and the feeling of betrayal by his loved ones has taken its toll on Hamlet.
During a conversation with his mother, Hamlet hears a noise from the tapestry and thought it was Claudius, so he proceeds to stabbing him, but out
came Polonius, Ophelias father. Hamlet's obsession with revenge has caused him to kill an innocent man and unavoidably leads his lover to perish.
The death of her father drives Ophelia insane and eventually she drowns causing her brother Laertes to hate Hamlet for destroying his family and
teaming up with Claudius to kill the prince. Their plan was to have Laertes fight Hamlet in a fencing match where Laertes will fight with a sword that
is coated with poison and later Claudius will offer Hamlet a Cup filled with poison. As the match begins Laertes cuts Hamlet, then they accidentally
switch swords and then Hamlet cuts Laertes. Now both boys have been sliced by the poisoned blade and their lives are reaching their end. As Claudius
watches the match with Gertrude, too focused on the match to be

Death Is The Study Of Dying, Death, And Bereavement
Thanatology
James Logan Machin
Denver School of Nursing
ABSTRACT
According to (Liming & Dickenson 2011., p.3) "thanatology is the study of dying, death, and bereavement." I believe that the study of death will be a
topic to be discussed and forever researched. There are many different aspects of death that I believe people can study, rather it be cultural believes,
medically researching different processes of death, or even just what your own personal discovery of what death exactly is or what happens after
death. No one can interview the dead. No one can find out if death is peaceful, or if there is life after death, or what death feels like. So for this topic
of defining thanatology I wanted to look at the studies of peoples near death experiences, interviews from people who are experiencing death, the
different cultures behind viewing death, and lastly the communication skills needed for health care professionals to develop in order to discuss death
and dying amongst the patient and their family
THANATOLOGY Thanatology, as stated earlier, is the study of death, dying, and bereavement. In 1903, Russian scientist, Elie Metchnikoff, who was
famous for his work in microbiology and the discovery of phagocytosis, advocated that without consistent attention to death, life sciences would not be
complete. Through this argument, Metchnikoff called for the establishment of a science devoted to the study of death. He argued that those who were
dying had few or no

What Does Death Symbolize Death
Once the young boy's sister tells him it is time for supper, the boy acts in excitement, unfortunately forgetting that he has buzz saw whirring in his hand.
Due to his carelessness, the boy cuts his hand; too much blood is lost from his hand to save it. During the surgery to amputate the hand, the anesthesia
proves too much for the young boy's body, and death takes the boy. In the last two lines of the poem, Frost writes that the family, because they were
still alive, continued on with their duties as there was "no more to build on there." Frost uses the saw to symbolize death and its manic, ruthless
fashion of taking lives. The author uses the line "...the saw, as if to prove saws knew what supper meant, leaped out of the boy's hand..." to emphasize ...

The author also uses the family's indifference to symbolize how the world continues to turn even without one less person; "turned to their affairs"
expresses the need to continue after loss much like soldiers would have to ignore the bodies of their brothers to continue the fight they lost their lives
for. Frost uses the young boy dying at the hand of uncontrollable events to express his theme; though death is cruel and unprecedented by taking the
innocent, the world has to continue moving and nothing is to blame except for the event. In the line "...the saw, as if to prove saws knew what supper
meant, leaped out of the boy's hand, or seemed to leap–he must have given the hand...", the author shows that the boy had no control over the saw
when it cut his hand. Frost never blames the boy, but instead depicts his innocence by saying that he was old enough to know better but was still a
child at heart. In the last two lines, frost becomes indifferent towards the boy's death because that is what the boy's family appeared to become. The
family did not seem to mourn because like the boy, they had to work to stay

Comparing Death In Affirmation And Death Of A Salesman
Time is long, but life is short. Both Affirmation by Donald hall and the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Millar discuss the theme of death. Both
works are successful in showing that the course one takes in life is of little importance, as death is inevitable. This is shown through old age,
ignorance and how people come and go in one's life.
Firstly, both authors discuss how the accomplishments in one life mean nothing in the end. All that one accomplishes amounts to nothing as, "to grow
old is to lose everything" (Hall, 1). Hall alludes to the fact that old age is synonymous with death. He is trying to convey that, all the work a person
completes in their lifetime amounts to nothing, as one day everyone will grow old and die. Regardless of the path one takes in life, it always leads
to death. Similarly, in the death of a Salesman, the author shows how hard work means nothing in life. To start, the protagonist in the novel, Willy,
attempts to obtain a perfect life, however this proves unsuccessful. Willy finally realizes that people, "work a lifetime to pay off a house you finally
own it and there's nobody to live in it" (Millar, 15). Willy's unrealistic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He gives his sons, Biff and Happy the false reality of being well liked and successful, and due to this naive and ignorant nature they believe their
fathers misconstrued idea on life. By doing so, both Biff and Happy are unable to come to terms with losing everything to life when they grow older;
this leads to a strong resentment towards their father. Hence the fact that ignorance shuns out the harsh reality of knowing all things come to an end.
To compare, both the literary works are able to send the message about ignorance and the role it plays in both, which is blinding the people from the
truth about life and death. To conclude, both poem and play show how ignorance can cause others to lose sight of the

Death Is Inevitable And Death
Death is a part of life no matter which way you look at it. With death, there is a lot to consider. Death is not inevitable but in a way it is a sort of
burden on the loved ones left behind. There is grief and a ton of planning involved which only leads to extra stress. One of the most important parts of
the death ritual is for most people the obituary. When looking at obituaries and the styles and formats that they are in, you can compare and contrast the
traditions and values of both newspaper and memorial website obituaries.
Like mentioned before, death is inevitable and death is also a heartache and disaster for the loved ones left behind. Not only do your loved ones
have to grieve over the decease, but during this time, they also have to plan a wake, funeral, and some type of resting place. The resting place can be
in a cemetery in a coffin, or it can be cremation. With death comes a lot of burdens especially if the deceased was not prepared to die. Even today with
the all technology we have people still die and we still have a conventional way of dealing with it.
During the grieving process and preparing everything, it is also customary for the person who is still here to write an obituary for the deceased. In an
obituary, people can write a story about the person, describe their accomplishments, or in some cases, just have the announcement of the death.
Obituaries are usually written so that people who were close to the deceased can know what this person died from,

The Themes Of Death And Death

Big Question Paper
The Meaning of Death
The themes of life and death are used frequently throughout many ancient and modern stories, and specifically, thoughts on death and what it means
differ from author to author, time period to time period, and circumstance to circumstance. Many works of ancient literature address the meaning of
death directly; examples include the drama Medea by ancient Greek playwright Euripides in 431 BCE, and the Decameron by Italian Giovanni
Boccaccio in around 1353. As well as being popular themes in ancient literature, however, death is used for significant meaning in modern novels,
movies, TV shows, and other forms of storytelling and entertainment. A good example of this is the movie The Book of Life, directed by Jorge R.
Gutierrez.
Dictionary.com defines death as: "...the total and permanent cessation of all the vital functions of an organism." In many religions, death is a
transition from this world to another, whether it be for better or worse. In our modern western society, death has many different views; it can be a
bittersweet occasion as well as a tragic one, depending on circumstances. As seen in Medea, the Decameron, and The Book of Life, death always
means an end to life, and an ultimate severance from the living. However, these texts provide very different views of death, as well. Respectively, it
means tragic revenge, a feared end, and reconciliation as well as separation.
In the tragedy Medea, death is central to

Accepting Death
Our bodies could well be described as our own worst enemies, capable of surrounding the greatest aspirations through earthly physical brittleness;
cutting short great lives prematurely. Some causes of death are particularly common and constant efforts are being maintained to fight their destructive
effects. However, other deaths occur unexpectedly and are frequently being questioned in why they took place. Attitudes towardsdeath change over a
life period of the person. When a baby is born he or she does not understand what death means. The concept of death has to be developed to understand
death and have an attitude concerning it. When younger people start understanding death they try to disagree with it and they believe that they can ...

In our own society, on the other hand, economic, social, and medical advantages have made death at an early age much less common. Death in
American culture has become a kind of unspeakable subject, something that many people find difficult to talk about. "The circumstantial causes of
death do not provide us with the inner–meaning of death" (Yancy). In our individualistic culture, people have to figure many more things out for
themselves. This may be a good thing, allowing for more choice and more freedom, but it also can be difficult, creating loneliness and uncertainty.
Children and teenagers dealing with the deaths and illnesses of people they care about may not know anyone else who has died, making the
experience even more strange and difficult that it would be anyway. Worse, they may live in communities where the adults are not familiar with
death either, making it difficult for anyone to understand what a child or teenager might be going through when he or she confronts the death or
illness of the parent, friend, relative, or acquaintance. "The fact is that that all our lives are fragile: Someday we will die, and before we die, we are
likely to the deaths of others whom we love" (DiGiulio, Kranz 24–25). Many aspects of American culture may seek to deny this fact, but it is true all
the same. To explain death to a young

Death Of Death And Death
Throughout my entire life I have never really given much thought to the subject of death. To be more accurate: throughout my entire life I have never
allowed myself to give much thought to the subject of death. Both of my parents are very easy going, optimistic individuals so death was not a
subject that was ever really touched on. The only times that I really remember discussing it was in church (and I rarely ever paid attention to this).
Despite this lack of contemplation, I have always known that I am very anxious about death, so when I filled out the attitudes towards death and Leming
's fear of death survey's I was not in the least surprised to find that my answers coincided with high death anxiety. Death anxiety is defined in the
textbook as emotional distress and insecurity when faced with reminders of mortality (Kastenbaum, 2012). This is an extremely accurate description
of the way I react to death. As stated in the attitudes towards death survey, I don't like to talk about my own death, nor do I like it when my loved
ones try to talk to me about their death. When the subject of dying arises I am automatically overwhelmed with feelings of panic and try to change the
conversation. It has been shown that women in general have a higher death anxiety (Kastenbaum, 2012) and I am also a very anxious person in general
so these probably contribute to it, however, from taking this course I have learned that the biggest contributor is my thoughts about the meaning of
death.

What Is Death And Life After Death?
What is Death and Life After Death?
In William Shakespeare 's Hamlet, many concepts are brought up and repeated throughout the entire play. Most of these concepts include ideas that be
argued many different ways. A concept that has a constant presence through the entire play is death. Death is the way that people are freed, how they
are convinced to keep living, a loss of identification, and a place that is unknown to mankind and a place that will never be known by living people.
Death is often thought about by Hamlet who has an encounter with the ghost of his dead father, King Hamlet. Hamlet also ponders why people kill
themselves and also what prevents people from killing themselves. He also thinks about how in death nobody is of any greater status than any other
person, everybody is the same in death.
During the course of the play, death is a constant concept furthermore is the thought of what awaits a person after they have actually died and no
longer belong on the same plane as living people and lastly if it is worth it to die just to end a hard life. One place that the dead go after they die is
purgatory. An instance that this occurs is during Act I scene 1 and scene 5. In both of these scenes, the ghost of King Hamlet appears during the
night. The appearance of the king makes the reader wonder what has happened to him to make him linger after he is dead and where exactly is he?
The king tells Hamlet of his fate after death. He is "doomed for a certain term

Examples Of Death In Chronicle Of A Death Foretold
The belief of one being fated to die traces back to biblical times with the fate of Jesus to die for the sins of the people. In Chronicle of a Death
Foretold, the narrator interviews multiple people from a small town in Colombia to draw information about the death of Santiago Nasar. Throughout
the novella, MГЎrquez explains the death of Santiago Nasar by utilizing biblical parallels to comment on the irony of the town's religious groundings,
thus, condemning individuals who claim to be religious despite their hypocritical actions.
Over the course of the novella, MГЎrquez describes Santiago Nasar as a Christlike figure to create a connection between Nasar and Jesus, implying his
role in the town's society. To begin, the victim of the story is introduced with the name "Nasar", which could be taken to draw from the word... Show

Also, "Santiago" means Saint James with "Santo" meaning Saint and "Yago" meaning James (MГЎrquez 3). His name foreshadows his ultimate demise
since Jesus died on the cross for his sins and Saint James was the first disciple to die for Jesus. The connection between him and these biblical figures
implies that his death is essential to wash the town of their sins. The day of Nasar's death, his mother described him, "dressed in white linen that had
been washed in plain water" (7). MГЎrquez connects Nasar's clothing to Jesus by using the color white, a symbol of innocence, representative of how
both Nasar and Jesus are innocent. By dressing Nasar in linen, the audience anticipates the death of Nasar since linen is the material that Jesus was
wrapped after his death. The plain water that the linen was washed in represents Nasar being baptized, symbolizing Nasar's purity and the washing
away of the town's sins. In

Death In Edson's 'Death, Be Not Proud'
Death is a theme that is used all too often in literature. Usually when people encounter death, they come to expect certain feelings. Whether someone
they know has passed away, or they are just reading a play in which someone dies; death is often associated with feelings of anger, depression, and
denial. In a play titled Wit, Margaret Edson depicts stages of dying through a woman who is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In his holy sonnet "Death,
Be Not Proud", John Donne challenges death in a way that illustrates his belief that there is an afterlife. In Donne's sonnet, the ways in which the
quatrains and couplets are set up summarize the speaker's faith in the certainty of the afterlife and the end of death (Ardolino). Edson and Donne

In this sonnet, Donne shows the reader that he believes in an afterlife. He writes, "One short sleep past, we wake eternally / And death shall be no
more; Death, thou shalt die" (13–14). This means that once something or someone dies, they wake up in a short time and live eternally in an afterlife.
In Donne's time period, many people believed in an afterlife, so this wouldn't have been something new for them to read. If everything that dies
actually wakes up again eternally, this means the only thing that really dies, is Death. One can also come to expect to see a large amount of literary
forms and devices used in Donne's sonnets. According to Ardolino, "Each of the quatrains is composed of one sentence that Donne artfully extends
over the four lines, thus imparting a sense of unity and development." Before reading Donne, people can expect to encounter well–structured stanzas

Death Anxiety
There are two things in this life that we are all bound to encounter, stress and death. Stress is something that affects each and every human, each and
every day. Some of us may have higher levels of stress than others. One reaction to stress may be anxiety. Anxiety is a physiological, as well as a
psychological state. Anxiety may be viewed as a "more intense" form of stress. Each person will differ when it comes to their own personal causes of
anxiety but quite a common worrisome form is that of death anxiety. Every living human being will eventually die, that is a universal truth but quite a
bitter pill to swallow. What happens after death? Why is it my time to die? When will I die? How will I die? Etc. These are the types of questions...

Past and future do not bum as brightly as the present–the here–and–now will tell you immediately who you are today. A result of the intense
here–and–now perspective is a lack of reflection, which is important for growth. It provides an opportunity to interpret experience and grow from it.
Reflection allows students to make choices. When reflection is absent, new modes of action are hard to develop. Repeated car accidents, lower death
anxiety scores found in this study, and other consistent life–threatening behaviors, may be related to this lack of reflection (Article 1, pg.15)." This
quote, more or less sums up the view of life from an adolescent perspective. It is quite hard to decipher the experience of "death" and what one can
learn from their dealings with death that will make it "easier" to deal with. There is also a link between low levels of death anxiety and high risk
behavior. The less one thinks of their own death, the more likely they are to engage in risky activity that could end in the one thing they do not think
about, death.
As stated before, death anxiety is not a discriminatory disorder; it affects both men and women. The area of who suffers more is not so crystal clear
though. It is quite murky considering there have been surveys where women have a somewhat significant higher level of death anxiety than men, as
well as surveys where it is quite equal. There is a noticeable difference in how females view

Death Versus Death By Emily Dickinson

Death versus Death–but the Points go to Dickinson
Emily Dickinson was born in a time when not many women involved themselves in poetry or any form of intellectual capability. Nonetheless, she did,
and she was such a wonderful poet that her poetry rivaled Whitman's. Of course, no one ever saw her poetry at the same time as Whitman because
she chose not to publish her poetry in her lifetime. Once she did, however, the world was shocked by the literary genius that lived in seclusion for a
good majority of her life, especially because of how raw her writing was without having the influence of an editor or publisher. Her style is very
distinguishable through it's excessive but purposeful punctuation and 4–6–4–6 rhyme that matches church songs and patriotic songs like "Amazing
Grace" and "Glory to God on High." The church influenced more than her style, however, as much of her subject matter pertains to her unorthodox
beliefs. Other subjects include hope and sometimes humor, but her ideas on death are both very interesting and complex. Dickinson does not make
light of death, but she uses her poems as her diary to record her thoughts on death. She moves rapidly from thinking death is passive to thinking it is an
amazing honor, but she also thinks of it in a terrified sense. Emily Dickinson's views on death may not be easy to understand, and one may not draw a
conclusion based off of her thoughts

Death And Its Effects On The Reality Of Death
"They were afraid of dying but there were even more afraid to show it. They found jokes to tell. They used a hard vocabulary to contain the terrible
softness. Greased they 'd say. Offed, lit up, zapped while zipping. It wasn 't cruelty, just stage presence. They were actors. When someone died, it
wasn 't quite dying, because in a curious way, it seemed scripted, and because they had their lines mostly memorized, irony mixed with tragedy, and
because they called it by other names, as if to encyst and destroy the reality of death itself. " pg. 19 To someone just picking up this book, this scene
would simply look like some poor soldiers developing a temporary and innocent coping mechanism to deal with Death as they face him head on. But ...

One character is obviously the comic relief, another the beloved hero. The rest, valiant men fighting for their country, their lives, their freedom. The
scene ends and the curtain rises, all of the pseudo soldiers take a bow and go home to their normal lives, far from the hands of death that grasp at the
men forgotten in Vietnam, the real soldiers. They, who saw the hardships of war as more than just a script, beyond the glamorized versions that are
seen by the American eyes. They saw the death and the tragedy, slowly becoming worn down into less of a human and more of a desensitized killing
machine because that 's what war does. It permanently scars the soldiers, tearing away the feeling of loss and inappropriately replacing it with comedy,
showing that war is destructive, stealing away an ounce of humanity with each bullet. As seen in The Things They Carried, written by Tim O 'Brien,
the Vietnam War destroyed the minds of soldiers, causing them to lose their human emotions in an unglamorous setting, devaluing death as they lose
their ability to appropriately handle situations. Center stage stands a man, young and valiant, seemingly fearless. Well, until a bullet collides with his
brain and he loses his identity as Ted Lavender and adapts his new one as another tally of the total number of men killed in action. But he is not
actually killed. No, he is "greased they 'd say.

Death And Its Effect On Death
No one wants to die. Even people who want seek their religious salvation after death, do not want to die to get there. Whether you fear it, embrace it,
or recognize death as something other than the biological end of your life, death is the destination we all share as no one has ever escaped it.
However you feel about death, it's probably a result of how you've been conditioned to the idea of death. What a culture believes happens during and
after death, whether there is an afterlife and what that afterlife might be like, morality, and fate greatly shapes how an individual feels and embraces
death. Taking a closer look at how some different cultures throughout time such as the ancient Egyptians, the Greeks and Romans, and native
American Indians we can see how this universal human experience isn't so universal outside the biological end of the physical body. Death of the
physical body can come in all forms at any moment. The cessation of organs, breath, brain activity, and vital functions is the medical definition of
death, however to some cultures this isn't an accurate representation of the end of the physical body. What these three cultures have in common is that
they believed the physical body was a vessel for the spirit and was signified the end of the person life on earth with a transition to the afterlife. For
instance, the ancient Egyptians believed humans were made up of both physical and non physical elements, the body making up the physical element.

"Death Has an Appointment in Samarra" VS. "Godfather Death" Two short stories "Death Has an Appointment in Samarra" and "Godfather Death" has
very distinctive similarities and difference in portraying Death. Both stories show the reality and inescapability of Death by portraying the helplessness
of both the student of Sufi and the godson in front of Death. They both tried to cheat death by either trying to run far away or beg for mercy against
Death. However, in the end they were both met with their demise by Death's hand. There are many similarities in the two short stories and the way two
authors represent their character of Death. One of the most notable similarities of their character Death is how they are depicted less as an all knowing
omniscient being but instead more of a human figure. In "Death Has an Appointment in Samarra" Death is surprised to find the student in Baghdad and

The main difference is the extent of the power of Death. The Death in "Death Has an Appointment in Samarra" was surprised to find student in
Baghdad but as a reader we know that the student is already in Samarra which is where Death was supposed to meet him to take his life. This shows
that no matter what happens the foreknowledge of Death in "Death Has an Appointment in Samarra" always comes true whether or not Death knows
how it happens. However, in "Godfather Death" the god son is able to cheat Death twice, once for the king and once for the princess. Which implies
that even though the death of the king and the princess were already determined it could be reversed and Death could not do anything about it. The
difference in power of two Death shows that Death in "Death Has an Appointment in Samarra" is more absolute than the Godfather

Fear Of Death : The Fear Of Death
Fear of Death Thantophobia, the fear of death, has an affect on 68% of the U.S. population in some way or another. "Some people fear being dead,
while others are afraid of the actual act of dying" (Thantophobia). Throughout history, many different assumptions of death have occurred, leading
people to be curious of what is true and what is not. This may be why most pieces of writing use the fear of death somehow in their story. "An almost
universal fear, death recurs in literature more than any other fear..." (The top 10). Throughout literature the popularized fear of death writing style has
been used in many pieces of work such as "The Pardoner's Tale" and "The Masque of the Red Death". In Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Pardoner's Tale" the

As the story goes on, him and his guests decide to throw a masquerade ball, decorating the whole palace. At the party, an uninvited guest attends,
wearing a mask that looks like a corpse. He shows symptoms that are similar to those of the plague. He then confronts the guest and "instantly
afterwards, fell prostrate in death the Prince Prospero" (Poe, Edgar Allan). This symbolizes how your fear of something can take control and in
the end, kill you. Edgar Allen Poe is most famously known for his fear of death writing technique, as seen throughout the entire story of "The
Masque of the Red Death". In my personal opinion, I am not afraid of death, but I am afraid of the dying process. It's undeniable that everyone will
die at some point in time, so that's no surprise. That should be expected by all. But, how you die is the tricky part. It might be a slow death, a very
painful death, or it might just happen instantly with no hurting at all. It might scare some people that you could die at any moment of any day, but
that doesn't bother me. I know that most of it is out of my control, so why worry about it? Instead enjoy life and whatever happens in the end, will
happen. The fear of death is a very interesting and thought provoking topic for writers as well as the readers. "The Pardoner's Tale" and "The
Masque of the Red Death" both use the theme of the fear of death in their stories, and they do a good job of it. Their stories make

The Death Of Death
Roughly, one–hundred five people die per minute or in other words, 55.3 million people die per year. Death is never a comfortable conversation to
have with others but death is common especially among the elderly population. Atul Gawande in Being Mortal talks about how death takes many
people by surprise and the descriptions of aging and dying. All the while living better through the understanding of death. The author is trying to
express that even those in the medical field struggle with death and not ensuring the well–being of the patients that are coming in. He emphasis the idea
of the elderly feeling "comfortable" in the state and location they are. Those who are growing of age never truly feel comfortable because they never

It was a medical problem they could make an impact on. When the elderly are in assisted living communities they are fit into the caregivers
schedule rather than their needs, such as scheduled bathroom breaks instead of having them as the patient needs. Gawande states that many of the
elderly who live in assisted living communities and other communities feel as though they are in the hospital due to all the checks. One major
example is that those who go to the bathroom regularly are just put into diapers rather than being taken to the bathroom whenever they need. There
is a loss of freedom. "Our elderly are left with a controlled and supervised institutional existence, a medically designed answer to unfixable problems,
a life designed to be safe but empty of anything they care about." (Gawande, Year). The authors purpose is to make people more comfortable with
talking about death to not only better prepare ourselves, because there is no preparation around death, but to better educate ourselves on the options
we have. To build a health care system that allows people to fulfil their ambitions and be able to end life peacefully and content with what they
accomplished. We all know we are going to die, we just don't know when.

The Death And Brain Oriented Death
Introduction:
There are many causes of death due to certain issues within the human body they may be caused from environmental stress or just something that is
abnormal inside the body. The causes of deaths that have been described or learned are different from one another and will give a sense of how
they are opposite of one another. When certain parts of the body or certain organs of the body stop working properly, there are reasons why this may
happen, which include how we may treat our body or just if there's a problem going on that we may or may not have control over. In other words death
may be mysterious or caused by a problematic trauma to our bodies. This paper will discuss only, the difference between cardiac death and brain...

Brain death is a little bit different from cardiac death (American Heart Association).
With brain death, this seems to be a loss of function of the brain that tends to be irreversible in some cases for people. This loss of function also
includes the brainstem of a person. Brain death is now defined as one being in a coma with no responsiveness and movement do to receptors of the
body which also includes possibly breathing. If one is considered brain dead, then there will also be no reflexes of the brain stem which connects
the brain to the spinal cord for electrical signals to be sent throughout the body. Many times, ones death for being brain dead can be caused from a
massive injury to the brain versus for cardiac arrest is a death that just comes with no warning. With our heart and brain being two vital organs,
damage to both causes to opposite issues for people with one being able to be reversed and the other being irreversible, depending upon damage
and how long this damaged has occurred. Most times with a person being in a coma or brain dead there is no reversible cause, but with time there
could be some change within a person. With cardiac arrest, a defibrillator can quickly change one being dead to one being back alive once the heart is
revived, but could still have some complications (Goila and Pawar pg. 7–11).

The Death Of Death By Martin Heidegger
In Martin Heidegger's article "Excerpt from Being and Time" he talked about death, he suggested that death is known as a mishap which is constantly
occurring as a case of death. Death is encountered as a well known event occurring within the world. He means that people know less about death,
people only know death by funeral, only see it as an event that need to attend. When talk about death people only can talk about other people's
death, they can't really know about their own death. In my own view I think people can refer to their own death when they see other people died,
because we can't experience our own death and give out thoughts on it, death is unavoidable but we can't predict what is our death like until the
end of our life, so by experiencing other people's death we can think deeply on our own death and life. I think people can't choose their birth, this is
a decision made by parents, but we can think about how we want our death like, death can be described as a personal belongings, other person can't
decide for you, they can't control it, so I see death as a serious thing in my life.Usually people want to see themselves die in a peaceful way, in the
"Stark Choices" by Tulloch G, it mentioned when talk about death neutral term would be "bringing about death" "killing"has stronger negative
connotations. People tried to avoid express pain or suffer when talk about death. People all have ideal death, and how they want themselves be after

The Death of Reality and the Reality of Death
The Death of Reality and the Reality of Death
Death is never easy. Afterall it is the only sure thing anyone will ever do. Yet how one dies is determined by how they live. One who lives their life
to the fullest will be content and open to death, while one whose life has been empty will fear it; but what if the difference between full and empty
was not so easily differentiated? What if reality and falsehood were the same? This idea is contemplated in both Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller
and The Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy. In the world of the salesman, Willy Loman, who can not see who he is nor distinguish reality from
fantasy, and the world of Ivan Ilych, who can not see his life for what it is nor find true happiness, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So he decides to kill himself. He believes that he is worth more dead than alive and refers to his plan as a diamond, "rough and hard to the touch"
(Miller 126), something attainable that makes up for all of the failures he has endured in the past. Willy does not know who he is and this
falsehood becomes his undoing. Similarly, falsehood brings about Ivan Ilych's death. The biggest deceit for Ivan is his failure to admit to his
mortality, as well as his idea of what happiness is. Ivan has spent his entire life trying to rise the corporate ladder in his two faced aristocratic
world. He loves playing bridge and presiding over the courts, his family life is in shambles, yet he does not mind at all and still considers his life
to be pleasant. Ivan is totally concerned with only his career and appearances. He tries to look more successful that he really is by making his
middle class home look upper class, but "his house was so like the others that it would never have been noticed, but to him it all seemed to be quite
exceptional." (Tolstoy 530). It is while he is decorating this house, climbing a ladder to hang drapes, that he injures his side, an injury that will cause
his death. Ivan's desire to climb the ladder of success, failure to recognize his false sense of happiness, and his concern with appearances leads to his
death.
However, Ivan recognizes

The Death Of The Black Death
In the 1300s, the Black Death swept across the western world, leaving behind a different perspective on the world. The Black Death rampaged through
cities, killing thousands of people a day, leaving the remaining citizens distraught. With the multitude of death, many people began to contemplate what
the afterlife held in store for them. Therefore, pieces like the Dance of Death, transi tombs, the Three Living and Three Dead, and many other artistic
expressions about death began to appear. The artistic elements illustrate a complex combination of similarities and difference. However, the central
theme focused on the inevitable fate of mankind. The Black Death did not exclude anyone from its rampage; it was simply an epidemic caste upon
the western world. Death is something that no one can escape from; this notion is demonstrated in The Dance of Death. The Dance of Death was
originally a dance performed in attempt to preserve the town from being affected by the Black Death. Another report of the dance was, "...in 1374 a
dancing mania seized hundreds of people in German and Flemish towns. The people periodically interrupted their dance to fall to the ground and allow
onlookers to trample them in the belief that this would cure them of their 'extreme oppression,' although it is nowhere stated that this was the disease."
Later, the dance was translated into painting forms that depicted people in every age range and social statues dancing with death. These paintings

Death Is The End Of Death
There Is Nothing To Fear In Death.
Everybody will die at some point. I know death is coming and there is nothing to fear about it because I believe that there is nothing about it on the
other side to be afraid of. I was content, perfectly, to be precise before I was born and I believe it will be the same state even with death.
In this essay, I will talk try to talk about why there is nothing to be afraid of in death. It is evident that death cannot be experienced, in the physical
form. This is because by definition, death is the end of all physical experience. Therefore, there is no reason to have fear for something you will not
experience. According to Ruch 2012, in the event of a physical death and the spiritual plane exists, then we would suppose that there would be a
spiritual sense of freedom which one should not be afraid of either.
John Donne says to death not to be proud. As much as it appears dreadful and mighty, in reality death is powerless. Most Christians view death as a
gateway to a new life. Actually, they view it as a better life of no sorrows but happiness and plenty of it. We should therefore not view death as the
end but as a great new beginning. We should view death as a form of sleep that will come to an end with an awakening to an unending consciousness
of oneself. Even if this expectation did not exist, some of us would take comfort in the thought that one's energy, in the least, would remain as part of
the universe at large. Spinoza and Aristotle hold

Death Is Not Death?
Throughout our lives we have instinctually feared what is considered the most horrible, yet inevitable fate of all mankind; death. We spend our entire
lives fearing death as well as theorizing and developing ways to live longer and put off our own eventual demise. Death is universally feared, even
from a young age we are aware of the fact that death is the ultimately the worst thing that could possibly happen to any mortal being. Death is
defined as the "permanent ending of vital processes in a cell or tissue". When thought of in these terms death does not seem like anything to be so
greatly feared, it simply sounds like a scientific fact of life, so why is it that the fear of death is so prevalent? It appears that death is feared because
we fear punishment from God for our previous actions, as well as because of the fact that we are concerned about not accomplishing our goals
before we perish and of course because we have such a strong fear for the unknown. Epicurus however did not have any fear of death, he believed
that death was simply nothing to us and that fearing being dead was senseless because we would not be present to actually experience it. According to
Epicurus we should not fear death because our soul dies along with our bodies, because it is irrational to fear nonexistence as we have experienced it
before and lastly because fearing death can only take away from us enjoying the short time we have on earth.
Epicurus himself was a firm believer in the

Is There Fear Of Death In Epicurus's Fear Of Death?
The mention of death sparks fear and anxiety among people but there is no reason why people should fear death because it does not have any meaning
to them. Epicurus (2016) claims, "Death, the most frightening of bad things, is nothing to us; since when we exist death is not yet present, and when
death is present, then we do not exist". Most people fear death because they feel that it hinders them from accomplishing some of their plans in life
and the fact that they do not know what will happen to them after death. Moreover, the fear of being punished by gods after dying makes most
people feel frightened when death is mentioned (Beard, 2015). However, Epicurus argues that there is no need to fear death because there is no
existence after dying. Since man will not exist to experience life after death, people should not worry about their state after death, as it is not
necessarily a bad one as people have been made to believe. Thus, it is imperative to illustrate why death is nothing to us. ... Show more content on

Beard (2015) postulates that Epicurus sees death as the end of man's feelings; thus, feeling as people know it becomes obsolete at the time of death.
All materials including the soul are normally dispersed back to the earth after death. Furthermore, death does not bring any form of pain because after
the soul has been disembodied it becomes impossible for one to have any emotional response. The fact that it is impossible to feel pain after dying is
another valid reason why death should not be

Death Is Not Stop For Death By Emily Dickinson
Death in Rebirth In this poetic exploration Because I Could Not Stop for Death by Emily Dickinson; the assumption of accepting death has been the
ultimate interpretation of this poem. Clarification/evidence has given readers an idea that death is unavoidable and that eternal darkness is what awaits
after death. Some might say death is a sinister man who only takes your life out of spite, but others would object and lure other pears to be
optimistic to the true meaning of death. In a different perspective Dickinson's poem could be understood as "rebirth". Death being a blessing, as a
result of an awakening to an afterlife, "new beginning". Depicting this poem many interpretations can lead to many different ideas. The strategic
poem Dickinson wrote allows you to appreciate her examination of death as a positive outlook. The mental illustration of the poem is early sunrise
as if Dickinson is about to start her day. As she goes on she clarifies a visit from death is at her door step. "The Carriage held but just Ourselves–"that
sentence alone makes viewers picture some kind of journey about to take place, somewhat as if it were the beginning of a reincarnation, or as a
detour ride of her life. Dickinson goes on to explain that she is onboarding a "carriage" some could interpret this as the last day on earth "judgment

The Responsibility Of Death In Grimm's Godfather Death
The fable of "Godfather Death" poses several topics worth discussing. I was particularly intrigued with how it portrays the human compulsion to tempt
fate. In this particular example, the protagonist of the story is placed under the care of Death, a being thought to be omnipotent and clearly not
someone to mess around with. As a christening gift, Death awards the protagonist an herb that will help any patient of his recover. Death also gave
him conditions in which he was permitted to use the herb's power. "If I stand next to the sick person's head, you may speak boldly that you will make
him healthy again. But if you see me standing by the sick person's feet then he is mine" (Grimm 13). He continued to warn the protagonist of what
would happen if he abused the herb's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

against Death's wishes and give the herb to the sick king, even though Death had stood by the king's feet. The protagonist assumed that he would be
forgiven due to the fact that he was Death's godson. The protagonist got lucky, Death spared his life, but also warned him never to deceive him
again. I would like to think that the doctor took this warning to heart, but alas, as soon as a beautiful girl came into the picture, Death's warning was
the farthest thing from his mind. Once again the doctor cheated Death and chose to save the girl's life in the hope that they would get married and he
would inherit the crown. Death was not so forgiving this time. Death made a mockery of the man's life in the way that he ended it. A story like this
makes you wonder, why would anyone choose to try their own life like this? To the protagonist, greed must have seemed an even bigger motivation

Summary
87 Thomas Nagel starts his gathering of articles with a most interesting discussion about death. Death being a standout amongst the most clearly
imperative subjects of consideration, Nagel takes an intriguing approach as he tries to define the truth as to whether death is or is not a damage
for that single person. He starts by taking a gander at the very common perspectives of death that are held by a great many people in the world, and
lets us know that he will talk of death as the "Unequivocal and permanent end to our existence" and looks at the actual nature of death itself. The
first view that Nagel chooses to talk about is the perspective that death is awful for us on the grounds that it denies us of more life.Nagel gives an
example of death and being in a coma before dying. Looking now at what is not good about death rather than what is great about life, Nagel shows a
few evident thoughts in regards to this point. So death is awful in light of the fact that it denies us of these encounters, not on account of the genuine
condition of death is terrible for us. The second issue is that which needs to do with who the subject of mischief brought on by death is, and when

Death Versus Death By Emily Dickinson

  • 1. Death Versus Death By Emily Dickinson Maheen Chranya English HP–E Ratliff April 21, 2015 Term Paper Rough Draft HP: _____________________ Death versus Death–but the Points go to Dickinson Emily Dickinson was born in a time when not many women involved themselves in poetry or any form of intellectual capability. Despite this, she was such a wonderful poet that her poetry rivaled Whitman's. Of course, she was never able to rival him because she chose not to publish her poetry in her lifetime. Once the world saw her poetry, however, it was shocked by the literary genius who had lived in seclusion for a good majority of her life. Her style is very distinguishable through it is excessive but purposeful punctuation and 8–6–8–6 rhyme that matches church songs and patriotic songs like "Amazing Grace" and "Glory to God on High." The church influenced more than her style, however, as much of her subject matter pertains to her unorthodox beliefs. Other subjects include hope and sometimes humor, but her ideas on death are both very interesting and complicated. Dickinson does not make light of death, but she uses her poems as her diary to record her thoughts on death. She moves rapidly from thinking death is passive to thinking it is an amazing honor, but she also thinks of it in a terrified sense. Emily Dickinson's views on death are uncertain, she varies between finding death casual, positive and romantic, and negative in a series of several poems Many people may fear death, but Emily Dickinson sometimes expressed in her ... • 2. The Death Of Death And Death On the topic of death, a question had been made on whether immortality is preferable to dying. In Plato's Phaedo, Socrates' death scene, Socrates has one last philosophical conversation with his friends about what happens to the soul when it leaves the body after death. Socrates believes that the soul is immortal, meaning that it will live on even when the body does not. The themes in Phaedo are similar to those in Leo Tolstoy's "TheDeath of Ivan Ilych," which tells the story of a man named Ivan who suffers from an illness and eventually dies. At first, Ivan believes that he is living a pleasurable life; he is married with children and works as a judge, however, his illness consumes everything he thought to be good and continually suffers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From this, it must mean that people's souls are still alive after the body has died. Along with the majority, I am scared of what it will be like to die. It's not that I fear what comes after death, because I believe that there is something waiting for us when we leave this life, but it's the possibility of a painful death that makes dying seem bad. Yet, I would still choose death over being immortal because I would only have to experience certain pain once, and then my soul would be free and move on. But if I were immortal, there would be the potential of continually suffering and not being able to escape it. An important reason for why I would reject immortality is that I would out live my loved ones; I would out live any future children or spouses, and when they die, I will be stuck on Earth. Yes, I would meet new people and come to cherish them as well, but it is only a matter of time before we are separated again, forever. And with no one to be by my side in times of pain and suffering, whether it be physical or psychological, I will have to experience it by myself. Tolstoy writes "he had to live thus all alone on the brink of an abyss, with no one who understood him or pitied him" (146). Tolstoy is saying that Ivan believes he is alone because no one seems to care or understand the pain that he is going through. With immortality, it is inevitable that one will suffer, but that suffering will only increase and cause distress because no one wants to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis Of The Poem ' The Death Of Death ' The combination of how the subject matter is conveyed by the narrator, and the emotions which are built through poetic devices contribute to constructing the message the author intended for each poem. Throughout Drummer Hodge, Hardy appears to express the idea that dying in battle is no way to achieve immortality through the memory of others, as every death is unnecessary and soon forgotten to the land. He frequently infers that Hodge is consumed by the landscape, becoming a part of it as he slowly loses everything he was. Hardy reinforces this idea that a soldiers death is meaningless and not at all remembered, by cleverly turning the phrase, 'being laid to rest,' which indicates the care and effort put into burring the deceased, into one which demonstrates the meaninglessness of his death. This can be seen in the first line of the poem, "They throw in Drummer Hodge, to rest," where he is not laid to rest, but thrown illustrating the fact that the soldier is totally disregarded and not remembered in any significant way. Brooke however, constructs a romanticized message of remembrance and honour for the soldier. The Soldier seems to convey the message that death in battle is an honourable death, which serves to repay a man's homeland for all it has given him, an action for which, he will be remembered. He continually refers to the transformation which occurs upon a soldier's death, entailing the change of the very soil he falls on, to English soil. This implication ... • 4. The Death Of Death As my eyes skimmed over the words printed on the pages of the oddly intriguing book, I experienced a slight sting of realisation within the depths of my soul. A pitiless dark cold. I had always been under the impression would be like this. My life would come to a halt, but nevertheless my consciousness would subsist in the void. Though it was quite unusual that afterlife would look so similar to my office. *** The deceased are in most cases despondent. This reaction itself is a perfectly normal, since it essentially stems not entirely from the unfavourable "why" of your own death but more so the maddening "how". Dying without any warning, for example being totalled by a large truck, may leave you with the sensation of being robbed of time. Though, if you had the unfortunate experience of dying, lying on a an uncomfortable bed that had distinctly been allocated as the very place your life would end, with dozens of tubes stemming from each orifice, the likelihood of you transferring the depression that you experienced in your previous life to...now, is quite high. Regardless your heart will most likely be heavy with sadness and regret. During this period of your now non–existent life, it is of UT most importance to take comfort in the fact that since you are categorised in the delighted group of the deceased, there is little that can get worse. The only way is up, though keep in mind for a prolonged period of time "up" will be perceived as an extension of "down" that never ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Death Of Death And Death Death affects people in a variety of ways, often differing throughout cohorts and cultures. Death does not affect everyone in the same way, and often life experiences have a key role in shaping how we view death. Most of these interviewees were from rural Iowa, and could show a contrast from the single interviewee from Tennessee. For this paper, I intend to showcase how several individuals can viewdeath in a variety of ways, and how they can each face their own unique set of problems and resources that can impact their death experience. Among these factors includes life experiences and age. In preparing for this paper I interviewed four individuals that I know quite well and had assumed would be able to get all questions answered easily. While all individuals were interviewed, some questions they were uncomfortable with and declined to answer. N. is a fifteen year old Christian male from a small rural town in Iowa. A. is a nineteen year old Christian female from a different small rural town in Iowa, about fifteen miles away. P. is a 43 year old male from the same rural town in Iowa as N. He is also N.'s father and could show an interesting cohort contrast. M. is a 65 year old female from Nashville, Tennessee and now has lived in the same town as N. and P. for several years. M. also declined to answer any personal religious questions for this paper. While most of these interviewees were not able to completely articulate how they viewed death, they put it into a context that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Death And Dying, Death, And Death Christopher Bullock had said it best in his work Cobler of Preston , " 'Tis impossible to be sure of any thing but Death and Taxes."(Shapiro, 2008) Prior to Elisabeth KГјbler–Ross' bestseller novel On Death and Dying, death was to be done alone. Death was a taboo subject for society. Death is the end result of many different factors effecting the body in a way it (the body) can't handle it any longer. Speaking in a medical light, there are two types of death, clinical and biological. "When a patient's breathing and heartbeat stop, clinical death occurs. This condition may be reversible through CPR and other treatments. However, when the brain cells die, biological death occurs. This usually happens within 10 minutes of clinical death, and is not reversible. In fat, brain cells will begin to die after 4 to 6 minutes without fresh oxygen supplied from air breathed in and carried to the brain by circulating blood. Cardiovascular pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) consists of the actions you take to revive a person– or at least temporarily prevent biological death– by keeping the person's heart and lungs working." (Limmer& O'Keefe, 2012, p. 1124) The KГјbler– Ross model, or the five stages of grief, postulates, a series of emotions experienced by terminally ill patients prior to death, wherein the five stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The model was first introduced by Swiss psychiatrist Elisabeth KГјbler–Ross in her 1969 book On Death and Dying, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Death Of Death By Emily Dickinson Perspective of death There are many different ways to describe death and the emotional feelings that come with death. Poems are one of the best ways to convey the process of death, the feelings that come with death, and impact of death. Emily Dickinson describes her own death in the poem, "Because I could not stop for Death" and the general idea that life is mortal. However, the poem provides Dickinson immorality through the power of her words. This poem describes death in a positive way by putting death in the form of man who has the persona of the gentlemen. Emily is actually a ghost and describes her death spirituality; therefore, she examines what real death might be like. Finding the main ideas of the poem is hard to figure out through the first line. This poem starts with the line 'Because I could not stop for Death' (Dickinson, Line 1) which gives the idea that the poem is about death. Starting with the fact that Dickinson did not have a choice about death, and she is portraying that it is not up to individuals to control their death. Dickinson even capitalizes the word Death, Carriage, Ourselves, and Immortality to emphasis death. Death is a man whose generosity gives positive strength. Death rides in on a carriage that also brings immortality. The carriage is a different type of transportation for Dickinson and brings her and Death to the next life. Dickinson implies death is not the end and immortality leads to eternal life. Dickinson and Death are together ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why couldn't it have been someone else? When a loved one is lost, these questions could be circling through their heads. Death is when someone's time on Earth has come to a close, there are numerous causes of death and people often wonder why it has to happen. Death is a part of life that everybody has to deal with. • 9. The Death Of Death And Death Promise Provided Everyone is familiar with the theme of death. "According to experience, death is the stopping of a behavior, the stopping of expressive movements and of physiological movements and processes...It is a departure, a decease, a negativity to the unknown...a departure without a return"(Levinas). Regardless of belief, death is the one equalizer common to man. There are countless stories attempting to illustrate or explain both the feeling and the nature of death given many various outcomes, fortunate or unfortunate. One point remains consistent through all of them: death is inevitable and no one can avoid it. Despite the fact that no man has ever evaded death, several people throughout the ages have unsuccessfully endeavored to unearth the secret to immortality. In fact, the "legends connected with the discovery of North America" also include those of a French explorer named Ponce de LeГіn who searched in sixteenth century Florida for the "Fountain of Youth" whose waters supposedly supplied vitality and eternal life (Olschki). In the literary works of Godfather Death and Appointment in Samarra, both tell a morbid tale resulting in death. Viewing the stories from a Christian worldview, both operate on false premises of superstition, man's nature to control his destiny, and fallible, finite thinking. Godfather Death recounts a story about a man with thirteen children. Since there were not enough people in his small town, he walks along the highway to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Death Of Death By Emily Dickinson Emily Dickinson like many poets of her lifetime was misunderstood and isolated. Her poetry was reflection her frustrations and her obsession with the unexplainable. She was rejected by society as well as her mentors due to her ideas and dark poetry. As time went by she became withdrawn, devoting her life to perfectionalize her writing. It was during this period of isolation that Dickinson wrote some of her greatest work, for instance " Because I Could Not Stop For Death" published in 1890 after her death. Personification, symbols, and the setting are use to illustrate and maintain the strong theme of death through the poem. Death is given human characteristics. Dickinson personifies death as a suitor who is kind and polite. He goes out of his way to take the poet on a carriage ride. She is seduced by his charm and the poet gladly gives up her life to join him. Death drives without haste or force he is mindful of the condition of the poet. She is slowly dying but she is relief and competent with the painless death. Once again death is personified as a dedicated lover who is willing to do anything to take care of his beloved. "Death comes as a gentleman, motivated by humble intentions, and concerned only with carrying the lady her bridal room in heaven...death–as–lover" (Griffith 56). As a the poem continues a drastic is changed is made and the poet is betrayed by death and her chaperon "immortality". Death is now arrogant and malicious; when the poet becomes ... • 11. The Theme Of Death And Death In Shakespeare's Hamlet In Hamlet, Shakespeare depicts the diffusion side of the problematic part in the life of the hero who recoils and leads to his death. The use of death in storytelling offers many pathways to character development and can also carry the theme of the story. Many stories can also be centered around death. In the story of Hamlet, the story begins with the young prince depressed about the death of his father. Prince Hamlet was ordinary boy just like any other. He was a smart and clever young man and was probably very kind to have many friends and a girlfriend, but after the news of his father's death, he had changed. Hamlet soon began to shut himself in his room every night and wears nothing but dark clothing. The death of his father ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... " I loved you not." Towards the middle of his play, Hamlet sees that his uncle appears to act suspicious and proceeds to walk out of the room. This means that what the ghost said must be true and he may now proceed in getting his revenge. Even though the young prince believes that he is pretending, it seems that between the death of his father and the feeling of betrayal by his loved ones has taken its toll on Hamlet. During a conversation with his mother, Hamlet hears a noise from the tapestry and thought it was Claudius, so he proceeds to stabbing him, but out came Polonius, Ophelias father. Hamlet's obsession with revenge has caused him to kill an innocent man and unavoidably leads his lover to perish. The death of her father drives Ophelia insane and eventually she drowns causing her brother Laertes to hate Hamlet for destroying his family and teaming up with Claudius to kill the prince. Their plan was to have Laertes fight Hamlet in a fencing match where Laertes will fight with a sword that is coated with poison and later Claudius will offer Hamlet a Cup filled with poison. As the match begins Laertes cuts Hamlet, then they accidentally switch swords and then Hamlet cuts Laertes. Now both boys have been sliced by the poisoned blade and their lives are reaching their end. As Claudius watches the match with Gertrude, too focused on the match to be ... • 12. Death Is The Study Of Dying, Death, And Bereavement Thanatology James Logan Machin Denver School of Nursing ABSTRACT According to (Liming & Dickenson 2011., p.3) "thanatology is the study of dying, death, and bereavement." I believe that the study of death will be a topic to be discussed and forever researched. There are many different aspects of death that I believe people can study, rather it be cultural believes, medically researching different processes of death, or even just what your own personal discovery of what death exactly is or what happens after death. No one can interview the dead. No one can find out if death is peaceful, or if there is life after death, or what death feels like. So for this topic of defining thanatology I wanted to look at the studies of peoples near death experiences, interviews from people who are experiencing death, the different cultures behind viewing death, and lastly the communication skills needed for health care professionals to develop in order to discuss death and dying amongst the patient and their family THANATOLOGY Thanatology, as stated earlier, is the study of death, dying, and bereavement. In 1903, Russian scientist, Elie Metchnikoff, who was famous for his work in microbiology and the discovery of phagocytosis, advocated that without consistent attention to death, life sciences would not be complete. Through this argument, Metchnikoff called for the establishment of a science devoted to the study of death. He argued that those who were dying had few or no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. What Does Death Symbolize Death Once the young boy's sister tells him it is time for supper, the boy acts in excitement, unfortunately forgetting that he has buzz saw whirring in his hand. Due to his carelessness, the boy cuts his hand; too much blood is lost from his hand to save it. During the surgery to amputate the hand, the anesthesia proves too much for the young boy's body, and death takes the boy. In the last two lines of the poem, Frost writes that the family, because they were still alive, continued on with their duties as there was "no more to build on there." The author also uses the family's indifference to symbolize how the world continues to turn even without one less person; "turned to their affairs" expresses the need to continue after loss much like soldiers would have to ignore the bodies of their brothers to continue the fight they lost their lives for. Frost uses the young boy dying at the hand of uncontrollable events to express his theme; though death is cruel and unprecedented by taking the innocent, the world has to continue moving and nothing is to blame except for the event. In the line "...the saw, as if to prove saws knew what supper meant, leaped out of the boy's hand, or seemed to leap–he must have given the hand...", the author shows that the boy had no control over the saw when it cut his hand. Frost never blames the boy, but instead depicts his innocence by saying that he was old enough to know better but was still a child at heart. In the last two lines, frost becomes indifferent towards the boy's death because that is what the boy's family appeared to become. • 14. Comparing Death In Affirmation And Death Of A Salesman Time is long, but life is short. Both Affirmation by Donald hall and the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Millar discuss the theme of death. Both works are successful in showing that the course one takes in life is of little importance, as death is inevitable. This is shown through old age, ignorance and how people come and go in one's life. Firstly, both authors discuss how the accomplishments in one life mean nothing in the end. All that one accomplishes amounts to nothing as, "to grow old is to lose everything" (Hall, 1). Hall alludes to the fact that old age is synonymous with death. He is trying to convey that, all the work a person completes in their lifetime amounts to nothing, as one day everyone will grow old and die. Regardless of the path one takes in life, it always leads to death. Similarly, in the death of a Salesman, the author shows how hard work means nothing in life. To start, the protagonist in the novel, Willy, attempts to obtain a perfect life, however this proves unsuccessful. Willy finally realizes that people, "work a lifetime to pay off a house you finally own it and there's nobody to live in it" (Millar, 15). Willy's unrealistic... Death is not inevitable but in a way it is a sort of burden on the loved ones left behind. There is grief and a ton of planning involved which only leads to extra stress. One of the most important parts of the death ritual is for most people the obituary. When looking at obituaries and the styles and formats that they are in, you can compare and contrast the traditions and values of both newspaper and memorial website obituaries. Like mentioned before, death is inevitable and death is also a heartache and disaster for the loved ones left behind. Not only do your loved ones have to grieve over the decease, but during this time, they also have to plan a wake, funeral, and some type of resting place. The resting place can be in a cemetery in a coffin, or it can be cremation. With death comes a lot of burdens especially if the deceased was not prepared to die. Even today with the all technology we have people still die and we still have a conventional way of dealing with it. During the grieving process and preparing everything, it is also customary for the person who is still here to write an obituary for the deceased. The Themes Of Death And Death Cambridge Hinds Big Question Paper The Meaning of Death The themes of life and death are used frequently throughout many ancient and modern stories, and specifically, thoughts on death and what it means differ from author to author, time period to time period, and circumstance to circumstance. Many works of ancient literature address the meaning of death directly; examples include the drama Medea by ancient Greek playwright Euripides in 431 BCE, and the Decameron by Italian Giovanni Boccaccio in around 1353. As well as being popular themes in ancient literature, however, death is used for significant meaning in modern novels, movies, TV shows, and other forms of storytelling and entertainment. A good example of this is the movie The Book of Life, directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez. Dictionary.com defines death as: "...the total and permanent cessation of all the vital functions of an organism." In many religions, death is a transition from this world to another, whether it be for better or worse. In our modern western society, death has many different views; it can be a bittersweet occasion as well as a tragic one, depending on circumstances. As seen in Medea, the Decameron, and The Book of Life, death always means an end to life, and an ultimate severance from the living. However, these texts provide very different views of death, as well. Respectively, it means tragic revenge, a feared end, and reconciliation as well as separation. Children and teenagers dealing with the deaths and illnesses of people they care about may not know anyone else who has died, making the experience even more strange and difficult that it would be anyway. Worse, they may live in communities where the adults are not familiar with death either, making it difficult for anyone to understand what a child or teenager might be going through when he or she confronts the death or illness of the parent, friend, relative, or acquaintance. To be more accurate: throughout my entire life I have never allowed myself to give much thought to the subject of death. Both of my parents are very easy going, optimistic individuals so death was not a subject that was ever really touched on. The only times that I really remember discussing it was in church (and I rarely ever paid attention to this). Despite this lack of contemplation, I have always known that I am very anxious about death, so when I filled out the attitudes towards death and Leming 's fear of death survey's I was not in the least surprised to find that my answers coincided with high death anxiety. Death anxiety is defined in the textbook as emotional distress and insecurity when faced with reminders of mortality (Kastenbaum, 2012). This is an extremely accurate description of the way I react to death. As stated in the attitudes towards death survey, I don't like to talk about my own death, nor do I like it when my loved ones try to talk to me about their death. When the subject of dying arises I am automatically overwhelmed with feelings of panic and try to change the conversation. It has been shown that women in general have a higher death anxiety (Kastenbaum, 2012) and I am also a very anxious person in general so these probably contribute to it, however, from taking this course I have learned that the biggest contributor is my thoughts about the meaning of death. ... Most of these concepts include ideas that be argued many different ways. A concept that has a constant presence through the entire play is death. Death is the way that people are freed, how they are convinced to keep living, a loss of identification, and a place that is unknown to mankind and a place that will never be known by living people. Death is often thought about by Hamlet who has an encounter with the ghost of his dead father, King Hamlet. Hamlet also ponders why people kill themselves and also what prevents people from killing themselves. He also thinks about how in death nobody is of any greater status than any other person, everybody is the same in death. During the course of the play, death is a constant concept furthermore is the thought of what awaits a person after they have actually died and no longer belong on the same plane as living people and lastly if it is worth it to die just to end a hard life. One place that the dead go after they die is purgatory. An instance that this occurs is during Act I scene 1 and scene 5. In both of these scenes, the ghost of King Hamlet appears during the night. MГЎrquez connects Nasar's clothing to Jesus by using the color white, a symbol of innocence, representative of how both Nasar and Jesus are innocent. Whether someone they know has passed away, or they are just reading a play in which someone dies; death is often associated with feelings of anger, depression, and denial. In a play titled Wit, Margaret Edson depicts stages of dying through a woman who is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In his holy sonnet "Death, Be Not Proud", John Donne challenges death in a way that illustrates his belief that there is an afterlife. In Donne's sonnet, the ways in which the quatrains and couplets are set up summarize the speaker's faith in the certainty of the afterlife and the end of death (Ardolino). Reflection allows students to make choices. When reflection is absent, new modes of action are hard to develop. Repeated car accidents, lower death anxiety scores found in this study, and other consistent life–threatening behaviors, may be related to this lack of reflection (Article 1, pg.15)." Death Versus Death By Emily Dickinson Maheen Chranya English HP–E Ratliff Term Paper Rough Draft HP: _____________________ Death versus Death–but the Points go to Dickinson Emily Dickinson was born in a time when not many women involved themselves in poetry or any form of intellectual capability. Nonetheless, she did, and she was such a wonderful poet that her poetry rivaled Whitman's. Of course, no one ever saw her poetry at the same time as Whitman because she chose not to publish her poetry in her lifetime. Once she did, however, the world was shocked by the literary genius that lived in seclusion for a good majority of her life, especially because of how raw her writing was without having the influence of an editor or publisher. Her style is very distinguishable through it's excessive but purposeful punctuation and 4–6–4–6 rhyme that matches church songs and patriotic songs like "Amazing Grace" and "Glory to God on High." The church influenced more than her style, however, as much of her subject matter pertains to her unorthodox beliefs. Other subjects include hope and sometimes humor, but her ideas on death are both very interesting and complex. Dickinson does not make light of death, but she uses her poems as her diary to record her thoughts on death. She moves rapidly from thinking death is passive to thinking it is an amazing honor, but she also thinks of it in a terrified sense. The Death Of Death By Martin Heidegger In Martin Heidegger's article "Excerpt from Being and Time" he talked about death, he suggested that death is known as a mishap which is constantly occurring as a case of death. Death is encountered as a well known event occurring within the world. He means that people know less about death, people only know death by funeral, only see it as an event that need to attend. When talk about death people only can talk about other people's death, they can't really know about their own death. In my own view I think people can refer to their own death when they see other people died, because we can't experience our own death and give out thoughts on it, death is unavoidable but we can't predict what is our death like until the end of our life, so by experiencing other people's death we can think deeply on our own death and life. Willy does not know who he is and this falsehood becomes his undoing. Similarly, falsehood brings about Ivan Ilych's death. The biggest deceit for Ivan is his failure to admit to his mortality, as well as his idea of what happiness is. Ivan has spent his entire life trying to rise the corporate ladder in his two faced aristocratic world. He loves playing bridge and presiding over the courts, his family life is in shambles, yet he does not mind at all and still considers his life to be pleasant. Ivan is totally concerned with only his career and appearances. He tries to look more successful that he really is by making his middle class home look upper class, but "his house was so like the others that it would never have been noticed, but to him it all seemed to be quite exceptional." (Tolstoy 530). It is while he is decorating this house, climbing a ladder to hang drapes, that he injures his side, an injury that will cause his death. Ivan's desire to climb the ladder of success, failure to recognize his false sense of happiness, and his concern with appearances leads to his death. However, Ivan recognizes ... • 32. The Death Of The Black Death In the 1300s, the Black Death swept across the western world, leaving behind a different perspective on the world. The Black Death rampaged through cities, killing thousands of people a day, leaving the remaining citizens distraught. With the multitude of death, many people began to contemplate what the afterlife held in store for them. Therefore, pieces like the Dance of Death, transi tombs, the Three Living and Three Dead, and many other artistic expressions about death began to appear. The artistic elements illustrate a complex combination of similarities and difference. However, the central theme focused on the inevitable fate of mankind. The Black Death did not exclude anyone from its rampage; it was simply an epidemic caste upon the western world. Death is something that no one can escape from; this notion is demonstrated in The Dance of Death. The Dance of Death was originally a dance performed in attempt to preserve the town from being affected by the Black Death. Another report of the dance was, "...in 1374 a dancing mania seized hundreds of people in German and Flemish towns. The people periodically interrupted their dance to fall to the ground and allow onlookers to trample them in the belief that this would cure them of their 'extreme oppression,' although it is nowhere stated that this was the disease." Later, the dance was translated into painting forms that depicted people in every age range and social statues dancing with death. These paintings represented ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Death Is The End Of Death There Is Nothing To Fear In Death. Everybody will die at some point. I know death is coming and there is nothing to fear about it because I believe that there is nothing about it on the other side to be afraid of. I was content, perfectly, to be precise before I was born and I believe it will be the same state even with death. In this essay, I will talk try to talk about why there is nothing to be afraid of in death. It is evident that death cannot be experienced, in the physical form. This is because by definition, death is the end of all physical experience. Therefore, there is no reason to have fear for something you will not experience. According to Ruch 2012, in the event of a physical death and the spiritual plane exists, then we would suppose that there would be a spiritual sense of freedom which one should not be afraid of either. John Donne says to death not to be proud. As much as it appears dreadful and mighty, in reality death is powerless. Most Christians view death as a gateway to a new life. Actually, they view it as a better life of no sorrows but happiness and plenty of it. We should therefore not view death as the end but as a great new beginning. We should view death as a form of sleep that will come to an end with an awakening to an unending consciousness of oneself. Even if this expectation did not exist, some of us would take comfort in the thought that one's energy, in the least, would remain as part of the universe at large. Spinoza and Aristotle hold ... • 34. Death Is Not Death? Throughout our lives we have instinctually feared what is considered the most horrible, yet inevitable fate of all mankind; death. We spend our entire lives fearing death as well as theorizing and developing ways to live longer and put off our own eventual demise. Death is universally feared, even from a young age we are aware of the fact that death is the ultimately the worst thing that could possibly happen to any mortal being. Death is defined as the "permanent ending of vital processes in a cell or tissue". When thought of in these terms death does not seem like anything to be so greatly feared, it simply sounds like a scientific fact of life, so why is it that the fear of death is so prevalent? It appears that death is feared because we fear punishment from God for our previous actions, as well as because of the fact that we are concerned about not accomplishing our goals before we perish and of course because we have such a strong fear for the unknown. Epicurus however did not have any fear of death, he believed that death was simply nothing to us and that fearing being dead was senseless because we would not be present to actually experience it. According to Epicurus we should not fear death because our soul dies along with our bodies, because it is irrational to fear nonexistence as we have experienced it before and lastly because fearing death can only take away from us enjoying the short time we have on earth. Epicurus himself was a firm believer in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Is There Fear Of Death In Epicurus's Fear Of Death? The mention of death sparks fear and anxiety among people but there is no reason why people should fear death because it does not have any meaning to them. Epicurus (2016) claims, "Death, the most frightening of bad things, is nothing to us; since when we exist death is not yet present, and when death is present, then we do not exist". Most people fear death because they feel that it hinders them from accomplishing some of their plans in life and the fact that they do not know what will happen to them after death. Moreover, the fear of being punished by gods after dying makes most people feel frightened when death is mentioned (Beard, 2015). However, Epicurus argues that there is no need to fear death because there is no existence after dying. Since man will not exist to experience life after death, people should not worry about their state after death, as it is not necessarily a bad one as people have been made to believe. Thus, it is imperative to illustrate why death is nothing to us. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beard (2015) postulates that Epicurus sees death as the end of man's feelings; thus, feeling as people know it becomes obsolete at the time of death. All materials including the soul are normally dispersed back to the earth after death. Furthermore, death does not bring any form of pain because after the soul has been disembodied it becomes impossible for one to have any emotional response. The fact that it is impossible to feel pain after dying is another valid reason why death should not be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Death Is Not Stop For Death By Emily Dickinson Death in Rebirth In this poetic exploration Because I Could Not Stop for Death by Emily Dickinson; the assumption of accepting death has been the ultimate interpretation of this poem. Clarification/evidence has given readers an idea that death is unavoidable and that eternal darkness is what awaits after death. Some might say death is a sinister man who only takes your life out of spite, but others would object and lure other pears to be optimistic to the true meaning of death. In a different perspective Dickinson's poem could be understood as "rebirth". Death being a blessing, as a result of an awakening to an afterlife, "new beginning". Depicting this poem many interpretations can lead to many different ideas. The strategic poem Dickinson wrote allows you to appreciate her examination of death as a positive outlook. The mental illustration of the poem is early sunrise as if Dickinson is about to start her day. As she goes on she clarifies a visit from death is at her door step. "The Carriage held but just Ourselves–"that sentence alone makes viewers picture some kind of journey about to take place, somewhat as if it were the beginning of a reincarnation, or as a detour ride of her life. Dickinson goes on to explain that she is onboarding a "carriage" some could interpret this as the last day on earth "judgment day"; "from his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Responsibility Of Death In Grimm's Godfather Death The fable of "Godfather Death" poses several topics worth discussing. I was particularly intrigued with how it portrays the human compulsion to tempt fate. In this particular example, the protagonist of the story is placed under the care of Death, a being thought to be omnipotent and clearly not someone to mess around with. As a christening gift, Death awards the protagonist an herb that will help any patient of his recover. Death also gave him conditions in which he was permitted to use the herb's power. "If I stand next to the sick person's head, you may speak boldly that you will make him healthy again. But if you see me standing by the sick person's feet then he is mine" (Grimm 13). He continued to warn the protagonist of what would happen if he abused the herb's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "But beware of using the herb against my will, or it will turn out badly for you" (Grimm 13). With this warning in mind, the doctor proceeds to act against Death's wishes and give the herb to the sick king, even though Death had stood by the king's feet. The protagonist assumed that he would be forgiven due to the fact that he was Death's godson. The protagonist got lucky, Death spared his life, but also warned him never to deceive him again. I would like to think that the doctor took this warning to heart, but alas, as soon as a beautiful girl came into the picture, Death's warning was the farthest thing from his mind. Once again the doctor cheated Death and chose to save the girl's life in the hope that they would get married and he would inherit the crown. Death was not so forgiving this time. Death made a mockery of the man's life in the way that he ended it. A story like this makes you wonder, why would anyone choose to try their own life like this? To the protagonist, greed must have seemed an even bigger motivation than the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Death Of Death It all started the way any story starts, there is a child born. This child tho isn't what you'd call normal. He was able to take life away. You see, before now life stayed, there was no death, and pain wasn't very common. At the young age of five he found out exactly what he could do. You see, he went to give his own mother a hug, but she fell down at his feet. She didn't get up, didn't move, and just lied there. No one had ever seen anything like this ever before so they burried his mom in the ground hoping to contain whatever had happened, becuse of that we now have funerals now. Deaths life was not easy because eventually he felt himself hurting if he did not take lives. He wouldn't die, but the pain he felt was worse than being eaten... Eventually he found a cave in the middle of nowhere and made his living just drawing in others life. Eventually after a few centuries he began to want company. Because of his yearning for another he thought about a child he had met on an island when going to his current living area. He was only but twenty when death met him. And yes, that is a child in death 's eyes. The child asked death much about what happened after he died. Death could not truthfully answer for he did not know. All he did take lives, after that he had no idea what happened to the whatever was left without life. So he helped the boy try to find out what was left after death. He stayed with the child until he had reached the age of one hundred and twelve. one hundred and fifteen days after he became one hundred and twelve death told him his time was up. So the child accepted it and told death "When i die, maybe you will finally be able to see what is left after death." and smiled. Death By Thomas Nagel : Death PHIL 1000B Zubair Sirvary (213241435) TA: Olivia Schuman Death By Thomas Nagel From Mortal Questions (New York:Campbridge U.press,1979)pp. 1–10 / http://dbanach.com/death.htm Thursday, february12, 2015 1199 words This summary will be referenced from the course textbook from pages 87 to pages 92 Summary 87 Thomas Nagel starts his gathering of articles with a most interesting discussion about death. Death being a standout amongst the most clearly imperative subjects of consideration, Nagel takes an intriguing approach as he tries to define the truth as to whether death is or is not a damage for that single person. He starts by taking a gander at the very common perspectives of death that are held by a great many people in the world, and lets us know that he will talk of death as the "Unequivocal and permanent end to our existence" and looks at the actual nature of death itself. The first view that Nagel chooses to talk about is the perspective that death is awful for us on the grounds that it denies us of more life.Nagel gives an example of death and being in a coma before dying. Looking now at what is not good about death rather than what is great about life, Nagel shows a few evident thoughts in regards to this point. So death is awful in light of the fact that it denies us of these encounters, not on account of the genuine condition of death is terrible for us. The second issue is that which needs to do with who the subject of mischief brought on by death is, and when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
