13. PROPERTIES OF INDIVIDUAL INGREDIENTS
KASTURI/MUSK:(Unique information)
First and foremost the main ingredient of this formulation is Kasturi .It is procured from
animal origin.
It is obtained from deer species Moschus moschifeus belonging to cervidae family which lives in NEPAL,TIBET,
INDIA, PAKISTAN, AFGANISTHAN,CHINA,SIBERIA & MONGOLIA.
It is a substance with strong odoured glandular secretions from musk deer, its popularly used as perfume fixative
since ancient times and its one of the most expensive animal products in the world.
Musk pod is normally obtained by killing the male deer through traps laid in the wild. Upon drying ,the reddish-
brown paste inside the musk pod turns into black Granular material called “musk grain”
The name musk originates basically from Sanskrit word “Mushka” which means testicles. The deer gland was
thought to resemble a scrotum.
The organic compound primarily responsible for the characterstic odor of musk is MUSCONE.
14. Description of Musk sac:
Musk is an inspissated & dried secretion (testicular extract ) from preputial follicles of male musk deer. The
material is found embedded in sac which is oval or round with a diameter of 1.5 inches;the upper surface is flat
with a smooth membrane and the under surface is covered with stiff hairs arranged concentrically round a small
opening.
Animal on average yields 2-4 drachms of the secretion. Each animal (male) yields one musk pod 2 inches in
diameter app.It occurs in irregular ,reddish black, slightly unctuous grains.
Musk when fresh is milky but later turns viscid & assumes a brownish –red colour. It retains strong diffusible odour
for long time.
Now Musk deer is listed under Endangered species because of over exploitation.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF KASTURI:
Musk contains Ammonia, oleine, Cholestrin,Fat, wax, gelatinous matter, albuminous substances & leaves an ash.
Ash is composed chiefly of the chlorides of pottassium, sodium & calcium.
When distilled ,musk yields the principles Muscone,Muskone(0.3% to 2%) and Normuscone.
Other compounds present in musk include Steriods, paraffins, triglycerides, waxes, Mucopyridine And nitrogenous
substances, fatty acids.
15. KASTURI/MUSK

Tilaka as rakshogna karma i.e.,antiviral,vashikarana and aroma therapy
purpose in Indian & Chinese traditional medicine & used in various
