55. MODE OF ACTION:
The pharmacodynamic factors of constituents of Patrangasava Drugs are Tikta, Katu,
Kashaya, Madhura rasa.
Tikta rasa is pitta kaphashamaka, deepana, pachana, rochana, dahaprashamana. Kashaya
rasa is sleshma, rakta, pitta prashamana, stambhana, sangrahi, sandhanakara. Madhura
rasa is pitta, vatashamaka, balya, tarpana, jeevaniya. Katu rasa is kaphashamaka,
agnideepana .
So the gross action was tridoshashamaka mainly pitta shamaka which abolished one of
the main doshas responsible for the disease.
Deepana, pachana action of tikta and katu rasa corrected the agnimandya which lead to
proper formation of rasa dhatu and thereby shuddha artava. By the virtue of its
sandhaniya and rakta stambhana properties
56. kashaya rasa reduced amount of flow of blood.
Balya, tarpana, jeevaniya properties of madhuara rasa improved the general condition of the
patients and toned up reproductive function.
Maximum contents of drug had laghu guna followed by snigdha and ruksha guna while some
components had picchila, guru and mridu guna. Laghu, ruksha guna caused aampachana of rasa
dhatu and lead to prakrita artava updhatu nirmana. Picchila, snigdha, guru guna pacified the vata
dosha and pitta was normalized by sheeta, ruksha guna of drugs.
Drugs like Patranga, Khadira, Vasa, Shalmali, Japa, Amrasthi, Dhataki were raktashodhaka and
stambhana which caused shodhana of dushita pitta and rakta and thus haemostasis.
Due to Shothahara, sandhaniya and vranaropaka karma of drugs they reduced uterine
congestion, reduced the fragility of uterine capillaries and helped in their toning. The
deepana, pachana properties of drugs corrected the agnimandya and helped in proper
formation of artava updhatu
57. Due to rasayana, balavardhana, raktavardhaka, pandughna, karma of drugs they
improved general condition of body, replenished blood loss, and corrected anemia.
Tikta rasa caused strotoshodhana and kept the strotasa patent which
resulted in proper dhatuposhana.
Maximum drugs had ruksha, laghu guna which caused aampachana of rasa
dhatu and subsequently lead to shuddha rakta dhatu nirmana.
Its sheeta veerya, tikta rasa and madhura vipaka balanced the pitta. Its
deepana karma normalized agni which is responsible for proper digestion
and metabolism.

1. A COMPARATIVE STUDY
TO EVALUATE THE
EFFICACY OF
HERBOMINERAL
COMPOUNDS IN
ASRIGDARA W.S.R TO
DYSFUNCTIONAL
UTERINE BLEEDING
The following conclusions can be drawn after scrutinizing the study regarding
Asrigdara. Asrigdara is a menstrual disorder characterized by excessive and/or
prolonged duration of bleeding per vaginam or bleeding in between the menstrual
cycle which is caused by vitiation of three doshas with predominance of vata and
pitta. It has very close resemblance with Dysfunctional uterine bleeding i.e. any
abnormal uterine bleeding without any clinically detectable organic, systemic and
iatrogenic cause. The etiology of the disease is mainly hormonal. It is usually met in
extremes of age – menarche or peri-menopausal. The main principle of
management of Asrigdara is tridosha shamana especially vatanulomana, pitta
shamana, Raktashodhana, raktastambhana, and deepana, pachana. The drugs of
Patrangasava and Jeerakavaleha possess the above said qualities and helped in
management of Asrigdara. The medicine administered showed reduction in duration
intensity, interval, amount of bleeding, and associated features of Asrigdara. It was
observed that patients could tolerate the treatment quite well and there was no
adverse effect noted during the course of trial. Group I patients showed more
improvement than group II but intergroup comparison was nonsignificant. Thus it
can be concluded that Patrangasava and Jeerakavaleha can be given to patients of
Asrigdara, for better management of the disease through Ayurveda without any side
effects as none was found during clinical trial. There was non-recurrence of disease
reported in last follow up after one month of drug free period.
