Follow me
1. Matthew 4:18-22 (NIV2011) 18 As Jesus was
walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two
brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother
Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake,
for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow
me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish
for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and
followed him.

2. 21 Going on from there, he saw two other
brothers, James son of Zebedee and his
brother John. They were in a boat with
their father Zebedee, preparing their nets.
Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they
left the boat and their father and followed
him.

3. Commitment to Christ Begins with a
Willingness to Follow Him
Because He is the “Way” to the Father.
John 14:6 (NIV2011) Jesus answered, “I am
the way and the truth and the life. No one
comes to the Father except through me.
3
4. Because He is the “Light” along the way.
John 8:12 (NIV2011) When Jesus spoke again
to the people, he said, “I am the light of the
world. Whoever follows me will never walk in
darkness, but will have the light of life.”

5. Because He is the “Pioneer” who has set the
course for us
Hebrews 12:1b-2 (NIV2011) 1b And let us run
with perseverance the race marked out for us,
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and
perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him
he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and
sat down at the right hand of the throne of
God.

6. Commitment to Christ Continues with
Following His Example
In suffering for His name’s sake
1 Peter 2:20b-21 (NIV2011) 20b But how is it to
your credit if you receive a beating for doing
wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing
good and you endure it, this is commendable
before God. 21 To this you were called, because
Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example,
that you should follow in his steps.

7. In serving rather than seeking to be served
Matthew 20:26-28 (NASB) Mt 26 "It is not this
way among you, but whoever wishes to
become great among you shall be your servant,
27 and whoever wishes to be first among you
shall be your slave; 28 just as the Son of Man
did not come to be served, but to serve, and to
give His life a ransom for many."
7
8. In walking in sacrificial love and service to
others
Ephesians 5:1-2 (NIV2011) 1 Follow God’s
example, therefore, as dearly loved children
2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ
loved us and gave himself up for us as a
fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

9. In looking out for other’s interests before
one’s own
Philippians 2:3-5 (NIV2011) 3 Do nothing out
of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in
humility value others above yourselves, 4 not
looking to your own interests but each of you
to the interests of the others. 5 In your
relationships with one another, have the same
mindset as Christ Jesus.
9
10. Commitment to Christ Means Following
Him to Glory
1 Corinthians 15:20-23 (NIV2011) 20 But Christ
has indeed been raised from the dead, the
firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For
since death came through a man, the
resurrection of the dead comes also through a
man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will
be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ, the
firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who
belong to him.

11. But none of this happens unless you are willing
to…
