• Christ the God-Man Part 1

    1. 1. Christ: the God-Man A study on the divinity and humanity of Christ and the difference it makes for us as His followers.
    2. 2. Christ: the God-Man

Christ as God

Christ’s Humanity

Impact for His Followers

    3. 3. Christ as God

Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!

Deuteronomy 6:4

    4. 4. Christ as God from Conception

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 1:18

    5. 5. Christ as God from Conception

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

John 1:1-5

    6. 6. Christ’s Claims of Deity

For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

John 5:18

    7. 7. Christ ‘s Claims of Deity

“ I and the Father are one.” The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him.

John 10:30-31

    8. 8. Christ’s Claims of Deity

But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, “I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.”

Jesus said to him, “You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; what do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death!”

Matthew 26:63-66

    9. 9. Christ’s Claims of Deity

And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Mark 2:5-7

    10. 10. Christ’s Claims of Deity

“ For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.”

John 5:26-27

The real point here is that the Son has the power to give life in the same way as the Father has.

New Bible Commentary

    11. 11. Christ’s Claims of Deity

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.

John 8:58-59

    12. 12. Christ’s Miracles of Deity

But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out; for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, “Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.”

    13. 13. Christ’s Miracles of Deity

Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished, for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.

Mark 6:49-52

    14. 14. Christ’s Miracles of Deity

“ Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? How is it that you have no faith?”

They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”

Mark 4:35-41

    15. 15. Christ’s Miracles of Deity

When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the two-drachma tax came to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the two-drachma tax?” He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs or poll-tax, from their sons or from strangers?”

When Peter said, “From strangers,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are exempt. “However, so that we do not offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for you and Me.”

Matthew 17:24-27

    16. 16. Christ’s Miracles of Deity

But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.

Luke 5:1-11

    17. 17. Christ’s Miracles of Deity

… And they came out and went into the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the waters.

Matthew 8:28-34

When He came to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, two men who were demon-possessed met Him as they were coming out of the tombs. They were so extremely violent that no one could pass by that way. And they cried out, saying, “What business do we have with each other, Son of God?”
    18. 18. Christ Worshiped as Deity

Thomas John 20:28

Magi Matthew 2:11

Leper Matthew 8:2

Centurion Matthew 9:18

Disciples Matthew 14:33

Canaanite Woman Matthew 15:25

Demoniac Mark 5:6

Blind man John 9:38

    19. 19. Christ’s Self-Centered Teaching

" Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. "

John 14:6

    20. 20. Christ’s Self-Centered Teaching

“ Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.”

John 5:24

    21. 21. Christ’s Self-Centered Teaching

" and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.”

John 5:40

Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”

John 7:37-38

    22. 22. Christ’s Self-Centered Teaching

Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

John 8:12

    23. 23. Christ’s Self-Centered Teaching

"Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death.”

John 8:51

    24. 24. Christ’s Self-Centered Teaching

“ In short, these chapters [John 5-11] represent the high point of Jesus’ disclosure of his true person, his divine Sonship, and this disclosure in turn produces the reaction of violent opposition on the part of the Jews”

John: The Evangelist of the Covent People

    25. 25. New Testament Claims

… which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh…

Romans 1:2-3

    26. 26. New Testament Claims

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation….

Colossians 1:15-17

    27. 27. New Testament Claims

Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:

2 Peter 1:1

    28. 28. New Testament Claims

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

Hebrews 1:1-4

    29. 29. Extra Biblical Claims

Now, if the Christians worshiped only one God they might have reason on their side. But as a matter of fact they worship a man who appeared only recently. They do not consider what they are doing a breach of monotheism; rather, they think it perfectly consistent to worship the great God and to worship his servant as God.

    30. 30. Extra Biblical Claims

And their worship of this Jesus is the more outrageous because they refuse to listen to any talk about God, the father of all, unless it includes some reference to Jesus: Tell them that Jesus, the author of the Christian insurrection, was not his son, and they will not listen to you. And when they call him Son of God, they are not really paying homage to God, rather, they are attempting to exalt Jesus to the heights.

Celsus, On True Doctrine: A Discourse Against the Christians .
