Introduction
A. Written by the “The Teacher”: Kohalath = “wise
person,” A son of David, a king in Israel, Solomon
B. Purpose: Solomon has set out to do a thorough-
going exploration of life itself from a purely
secularist point of view in order to show what a
secularist world view will lead to and then he shows
you the alternative.
2
C. The Prologue: shows the view of life from the
secularist’s point of view
Ecclesiastes 1:1-3 (NIV2011) 1 The words of the
Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:
2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”
3 What do people gain from all their labors at which
they toil under the sun?
3
D. The Epilogue: shows Solomon’s conclusion to the
meaning of life.
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (NIV2011) 13 Now all has been
heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God
and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all
mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into
judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is
good or evil.
4
E. The Qualifications of Solomon to Render His Views
on Life
He had enormous advantages as king of Israel.
He had a prestigious position as the son of David.
He had unlimited resources.
He had a divine gift of wisdom as per his request
in order to rule God’s people as he ought.
5
I. Solomon’s Argument from a Secularist’s Point View
Ecclesiastes 1:4-8 (NIV2011) 4 Generations come and
generations go, but the earth remains forever. 5 The
sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it
rises. 6 The wind blows to the south and turns to the
north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its
course. 7 All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is
never full. To the place the streams come from, there
they return again.
6
8 All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The
eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of
hearing.
THERE IS NO CREATOR GOD
Nature is self-sustaining.
7
A. Solomon Explores the Secularist’s View of Nature,
1. Secularists believe that generations come and go
but the earth remains forever, 1:5.
a. The sun rises and sets.
b. The wind follows its course cycle.
c. The water cycle of rain and evaporation
continues.
8
2. Secularists may wonder at nature, but would
rather attribute it to a personification of nature—
Mother Nature, rather than an intelligent Creator.
The secularist tells you nothing about the
meaning of life because to them it is meaningless. It
is without Someone to it meaning. In their mind, the
world goes round and round and is going nowhere.
9
B. Solomon Explores The Secularist’s View of History
Ecclesiastes 1:9-11 (NIV2011) 9 What has been will be
again, what has been done will be done again; there is
nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there anything of
which one can say, “Look! This is something new”? It
was here already, long ago; it was here before our
time. 11 No one remembers the former generations,
and even those yet to come will not be remembered by
those who follow them.
10
The secularist believes that…
1. Generations come and generations go.
2. History repeats itself.
3. There is nothing new under the sun. It has all
happened before.
4. Technology changes, but not humanity’s
problems and condition.
No One is guiding it anywhere or sustaining it for a
particular purpose.
11
C. Solomon Examines the Insufficiency of Secular
Learning Without God
Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 (NIV2011) 12 I, the Teacher, was
king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 I applied my mind to
study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under
the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on
mankind! 14 I have seen all the things that are done
under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing
after the wind.
12
15 What is crooked cannot be straightened; what is
lacking cannot be counted. 16 I said to myself, “Look, I
have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has
ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced
much of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 Then I applied
myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of
madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a
chasing after the wind. 18 For with much wisdom
comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more
grief.
13
D. Solomon Expresses the Only Conclusion that a
Secularist Can Reach
Ecclesiastes 2:17-23 (NIV2011) 17 So I hated life,
because the work that is done under the sun was
grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing
after the wind. 18 I hated all the things I had toiled
for under the sun, because I must leave them to the
one who comes after me.
14
19 And who knows whether that person will be wise or
foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of
my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill
under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart
began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the
sun. 21 For a person may labor with wisdom,
knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they
own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is
meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What do
people get for all the toil and anxious striving with
which they labor under the sun?
15
23 All their days their work is grief and pain; even at
night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless.
16
Secularists conclude that life is meaningless, therefore...
They despair to have to leave all they had worked for in
life to someone else.
They despair over the meaningless of working so hard
only to leave all they had worked to someone else’s
benefit who did nothing for it.
They despair that life, therefore, ends with grief, pain,
sleeplessness, and anxiety.
IS THAT ALL THERE IS?
17
II. Solomon’s Argument from God’s Point of View
A. Believers Conclude that Time and Everything that
Happens in It Are in God’s Hands.
Ecclesiastes 2:24-26 (NIV2011) 24 A person can do
nothing better than to eat and drink and find
satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from
the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat
or find enjoyment?
18
26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom,
knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives
the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it
over to the one who pleases God. This too is
meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
19
B. Believers Must Come to Understand that in Life
Good Things are going to Come and Bad Things Are
Going to Come and Indifferent Things are Going to
Come.
There are going to be some high days and low
days, bright days and dark days, and they come
under the gracious oversight of our Lord, and our
Savior, and our God.
20
1. If we are living our lives without any reference to
a sovereign God then our times are the result of
fate or luck. That’s secularism.
2. But if God is sovereign, why did He make life so
burdensome? God didn’t! Man rejected God’s
rule and guidance.
Ecclesiastes 7:29 (NIV2011) 29 “This only have I
found: God created mankind upright, but they have
gone in search of many schemes.”
21
Conslusion
How should we view life in all its challenges and
joys, burdens and blessings? There is a time for
everything. Honor God in all your times.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-14 (NIV2011) 1 There is a time for
everything, and a season for every activity under the
heavens: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time
to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a
time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,
22
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn
and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a
time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to
refrain from embracing, 6 a time to search and a time
to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7
a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent
and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to
hate, a time for war and a time for peace. 9 What do
workers gain from their toil? 10 I have seen the burden
God has laid on the human race.
23
11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He
has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one
can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
12 I know that there is nothing better for people than
to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That
each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction
in all their toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that
everything God does will endure forever; nothing can
be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so
that people will fear him.

  • 1. Time Sermon by Stuart Briscoe PowerPoint Reading Notes by Samuel E. Ward 1https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXMqT22LY6Q&t=1574s
  • 2. Introduction A. Written by the “The Teacher”: Kohalath = “wise person,” A son of David, a king in Israel, Solomon B. Purpose: Solomon has set out to do a thorough- going exploration of life itself from a purely secularist point of view in order to show what a secularist world view will lead to and then he shows you the alternative. 2
  • 3. C. The Prologue: shows the view of life from the secularist’s point of view Ecclesiastes 1:1-3 (NIV2011) 1 The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem: 2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” 3 What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun? 3
  • 4. D. The Epilogue: shows Solomon’s conclusion to the meaning of life. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (NIV2011) 13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. 4
  • 5. E. The Qualifications of Solomon to Render His Views on Life He had enormous advantages as king of Israel. He had a prestigious position as the son of David. He had unlimited resources. He had a divine gift of wisdom as per his request in order to rule God’s people as he ought. 5
  • 6. I. Solomon’s Argument from a Secularist’s Point View Ecclesiastes 1:4-8 (NIV2011) 4 Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever. 5 The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises. 6 The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. 7 All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again. 6
  • 7. 8 All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing. THERE IS NO CREATOR GOD Nature is self-sustaining. 7
  • 8. A. Solomon Explores the Secularist’s View of Nature, 1. Secularists believe that generations come and go but the earth remains forever, 1:5. a. The sun rises and sets. b. The wind follows its course cycle. c. The water cycle of rain and evaporation continues. 8
  • 9. 2. Secularists may wonder at nature, but would rather attribute it to a personification of nature— Mother Nature, rather than an intelligent Creator. The secularist tells you nothing about the meaning of life because to them it is meaningless. It is without Someone to it meaning. In their mind, the world goes round and round and is going nowhere. 9
  • 10. B. Solomon Explores The Secularist’s View of History Ecclesiastes 1:9-11 (NIV2011) 9 What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there anything of which one can say, “Look! This is something new”? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time. 11 No one remembers the former generations, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them. 10
  • 11. The secularist believes that… 1. Generations come and generations go. 2. History repeats itself. 3. There is nothing new under the sun. It has all happened before. 4. Technology changes, but not humanity’s problems and condition. No One is guiding it anywhere or sustaining it for a particular purpose. 11
  • 12. C. Solomon Examines the Insufficiency of Secular Learning Without God Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 (NIV2011) 12 I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind! 14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 12
  • 13. 15 What is crooked cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted. 16 I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind. 18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief. 13
  • 14. D. Solomon Expresses the Only Conclusion that a Secularist Can Reach Ecclesiastes 2:17-23 (NIV2011) 17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. 14
  • 15. 19 And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21 For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun? 15
  • 16. 23 All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless. 16
  • 17. Secularists conclude that life is meaningless, therefore... They despair to have to leave all they had worked for in life to someone else. They despair over the meaningless of working so hard only to leave all they had worked to someone else’s benefit who did nothing for it. They despair that life, therefore, ends with grief, pain, sleeplessness, and anxiety. IS THAT ALL THERE IS? 17
  • 18. II. Solomon’s Argument from God’s Point of View A. Believers Conclude that Time and Everything that Happens in It Are in God’s Hands. Ecclesiastes 2:24-26 (NIV2011) 24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 18
  • 19. 26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 19
  • 20. B. Believers Must Come to Understand that in Life Good Things are going to Come and Bad Things Are Going to Come and Indifferent Things are Going to Come. There are going to be some high days and low days, bright days and dark days, and they come under the gracious oversight of our Lord, and our Savior, and our God. 20
  • 21. 1. If we are living our lives without any reference to a sovereign God then our times are the result of fate or luck. That’s secularism. 2. But if God is sovereign, why did He make life so burdensome? God didn’t! Man rejected God’s rule and guidance. Ecclesiastes 7:29 (NIV2011) 29 “This only have I found: God created mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes.” 21
  • 22. Conslusion How should we view life in all its challenges and joys, burdens and blessings? There is a time for everything. Honor God in all your times. Ecclesiastes 3:1-14 (NIV2011) 1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 22
  • 23. 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. 9 What do workers gain from their toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. 23
  • 24. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him. 24
