China’s Bizarre
Food
2. In the story of tofu and chili garlic sauce, the main
character, Dr. Zhou, eats lunch with the mayor and he
has a bunch of bizarre choices from a Chinese menu.
One of the main courses was a monkey brain that Dr.
Zhou had just cut open and then fried in oil, and then
pour chili garlic sauce on top. In this power point, you will
learn about many Chinese foods that seem very bizarre
to us, but to Chinese people these seem like normal,
everyday food.
3. According to ‘In Search of Perfect’ website china’s
number one bizarre food is Fermented (hairy) tofu. Hairy
tofu is a stinky, hairy, moldy, fuzzy, mushy, and popular
tofu. It is prepared by frying in hot oil and served most of
the time with hot chili pepper sauce. (don’t worry the hair
is gone after the cook, but is still mostly moldy.)
FUN FACT: The town of Chengkan, China specialty is
hairy tofu.
4. Cloud ear fungus is another famous bizarre food you will
find in china. Cloud ear fungus is a crunchy, jelly like
edible fungus. The fungus helps to perfect chop stick
usage. The cloud ear fungus is often found with the soup
known as “hot and sour soup”
5. One thousand year old eggs is yet another bizarre food
in china. I know what you are thinking , but no, they are
not really a thousand years old. For two months the duck
or quail eggs are buried right after they are coated in
clay. “The taste of the eggs is worse than poisoned rice!”
some people say “it isn't to much of a problem to eat, just
make sure not to eat a lot!”
6. Donkey meat is a pretty popular food in china and
according to Andrew Zimmerman it is also VERY taste.
This pot of donkey contains plenty of extra flavoring,
donkey meat, and the picture below also contains some
turtle meat. Many Chinese people say that donkey stew
and meat has “lots of flavor, juice , and is very tasty.” The
meat is prepared by being hand mixed in a big bowl,
then cooked , and then later served.
7. Learning about this topic has helped our group better
understand and created a deep appreciation for the
Chinese culture and our short story. Our group has been
studying this topic for 2 weeks now, and through that
course of time we have realized that the Chinese people
eat some pretty bizarre foods to us Americans, but to
them, that is their home, that is what they grew up to,
and will always remember for the rest of their lives.
