LIBERTY UNIVERSITY HUNGRY FOR WORSHIP BY BOOK REVIEW SUBMITTED TO DR.
RODNEY WHALEY IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE
COMPLETION OF THE COURSE MUSC 610 – TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR WORSHIP
BY KIANAN SMITH LYNCHBURG, VA JUNE 2014 Name: Kianan Smith Book Report # Spring
2014 Semester Hungry for Worship by: Frank S. Page and L. Lavon Gray Chapter 1: Summary: In
this text, Hungry for Worship, authors Frank Page and L. Gray write about the hunger for
worshipping God that all leaders should possess. In chapter 1, both authors begin the text with the
concept of how the body has fallen in love with the method of worship and not the actual act of
being in the Presence of God. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They give examples from C.S. Lewis when discussing this subject. They quote Lewis with the term
"Chronological snobbery". This term means that while older generations only find value in the
traditions and heritage of our faith, the younger generations only find relevance in what is current.
They also write this type of separation between the young and old has effectively begun
dismembering the body of Christ limb by limb. The authors also put focus on the act of individual
preferences through church shopping. This according to Page and Gray, result in the encouraging of
churches to offer consumer–driven programming in order to keep members on their rolls. They give
scripture which identifies the importance of unity. Ephesians 4:14–16 shows how the body of Christ
should be unified in the midst of diversity. Leaders should work extra hard to keep the church
family worshipping together. The authors condemn chronological snobbery and suggest that both
the young and old come together. The young generation must grow up and the older generation
needs to adapt. Analysis: The authors point out a huge problem that is alive and well in the church.
Due to personal preferences, the church has separated itself from one another. Not only are different
cultures separate but the age differences within the church are separated amongst themselves. The
leaders of worship within the church whether they are pastors or worship band leaders must not

Liturgy Personal Statement
Attending mass every Saturday and helping at the children's liturgy is what ultimately ignited my
enthusiasm to become a primary school teacher. I've always had an interest in the development of
children, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. When I commence my career as a teacher in
Primary Education, I will strive to make a difference by providing a strong educational foundation
for the children. Studying Health and Social care at GCSE while furthering my knowledge by doing
Health and Social Care Level 3, has allowed me to develop my understanding of Health and Social
care services. This allowed me to address the importance of these services, positive relationships,
and behaviour, and developing a child's creativity. Participating in a week's work experience at St
Brigid's Primary School and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Currently volunteering at Acorns Hospice and completing a befriending course has given me a great
aspect into the teaching and caring of children with life–threatening or fatal disabilities. I found
great inspiration in being able to impact their lives for the better, and how they glowed with
positivity from such a negative situation; something I believe I would've never experienced if I
hadn't volunteered. The opportunity has allowed me to realise the impact of the role of the teacher,
and how significant this role can be to making a difference in the lives of the younger generation,
where the classroom can be a sanctity for some and provides unlimited opportunities for most.
Outside of the academic environment, I have been nominated as the Health and Social
representative for two years and form captain for three years, also participating in the school council
and sixth form committee which I find has given me confidence in communication and leadership
which I find a key asset in

The Reflection Of Education And Values Of The Modern...
Are humans merely thinking things that interact in this world from a purely intellectual frame work
or is there something more, deeper, richer to the human creature, and how does the way one views
human beings shape the way they view and organize education, especially Christian education?
These are the main questions raised and discussed in Desiring the Kingdom (Cultural Liturgies):
Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation by James K. A. Smith.
The main focus of this work is to shift the modern Christian mindset concerning what education is
and how one teaches and learns. The author believes that education should be primarily concerned
with shaping one's view of the "good life" which means a change from a focus upon one's intellect
being bombarded with ideas and doctrines to be learned and believed to a transformation of one's
imagination (Smith, 2009, p. 18). The author seeks to accomplish this task by showing modern
secular examples of what this world values and how it educates and indoctrinates individuals into its
"religion" and then discusses how the church and Christian educational institutions might adopt, or
rediscover, this "liturgical" method of forming individuals and communities.
Within the first few chapters of this book the author introduces his subject matter by stating the
main claim of the book which is that "liturgies– whether 'sacred' or 'secular'– shape and constitute
our identities by forming our most fundamental desires and our most basic attunement

Liturgy: Similarities And Differences Between Christianity...
Liturgy is the customary public worship performed as a 'work of the people' by a specific religious
group, according to its particular beliefs, customs and traditions. As a religious phenomenon, liturgy
is a communal response to, and participation in, the scared through activity reflecting praise,
thanksgiving, supplication, or repentance. Ritualization may be associated with life events such as
birth, coming of age, marriage and death. Methods of dress, preparation of food, application of
cosmetics or other hygienic practices are all considered liturgical activities. The most important
Christian rituals are called sacraments, sacred rites that convey God's scared power or Grace.
Baptism and Eucharist are the two most important sacraments, ... Show more content on

Christians believe that there is one god: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, whereas Buddhists believe in
Buddha. Similarities between these religions are that they both believe in a significant person, both
have prayers and both pray. Another difference is that Buddhists can pray at home whereas
Christians pray at churches. Differences between Islamic and Christianity is that the holy book for
Muslims is the Quran and is the Bible for Christians. Another difference is that Muslims have a
journey to Mecca whereas Christians don't have this. Muslims also part take in Ramadam whereas
Christians don't. Christians usually pray once a day whereas Muslims pray five times a day.

Black Catholic Worship On The Sacred Liturgy
Black Catholic worship as we know it today became possible in the mid–1960s when the
Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy was issued by the Second Vatican Council (1962–65). The
constitution opened worship to local languages and encouraged "inculturation" of the liturgy. The
first U.S. Mass in English featured a hymn, "God Is Love," by Fr. Clarence Rufus Joseph Rivers, the
first African American to be ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, who received a 10–
minute ovation. Fr. Rivers pioneered what he termed "Soulfull Worship" and soon was joined by
other composers and choir directors to bring a new musical wind into Catholic rites. These
pathfinders showed how prayer in African American congregations could be both ... Show more

Another scholar of African American Catholic liturgy, Fr. J–Glenn Murray, S.J., notes:
"What makes our worship uniquely Black is our indomitable and uncanny ability to 'sing the Lord's
song in a strange land'! (Psalm 137:4)" ["The Liturgy of the Roman rite and African American
Worship," Lead Me, Guide Me: The African American Catholic Hymnal, vol 1, 1987]
The African American Catholic "religious experience is shaped by African factors as well as by
those on these shores," according to Plenty Good Room: The Spirit and Truth of African American
Catholic Worship (U.S. Catholic Bishops, 1991), whose principal author was Fr. Murray. This
unique blending mirrors the mélange present in African Diaspora culture in general and in a whole
range of music – jazz, blues, gospel, mambo, and reggae, to name a few. Robert Farris Thompson in
his Flash of the Spirit: African & Afro–American Art & Philosophy writes about a Black Atlantic
performance style that has grown out of the collision of West African and Western Eurocentric

Essay about The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey
The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey
Yancey starts out with the image of Jesus. When he was young he had envisioned Jesus to have
angelic features such as, young, handsome, and a compassionate face. It wasn't until he entered into
a Christian college, that he was introduced to the real image of Jesus. I had an immediate connection
with Yancey. I too had an image of Christ in my head, which consisted of Hollywood portrayals and
those in classical paintings. It wasn't till I engaged myself at a Christian college, that I have now
received a new and more accurate picture of Christ. His book, The Jesus I Never Knew, questions
the reader with the thought, "How many Christians today are in the same position, not fully
understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, this fact is so true of our society today, but Yancey goes on to show how Jesus makes
an extra effort to reach out to he poor. He gives a list, which he got from another writer, on the
advantages of being poor. This list really made an impact on me. It showed me how I need to be
more open to what God has to say, and not so involved with the materialistic and secular views of
today. I need to focus on what God has planned for me, and not make my focus to be what other
people think of me. "Strength, good looks, connections, and the competitive instinct may bring a
person success in a society like ours, but those very qualities may block entrance to the kingdom of
heaven" (Yancey 114). In Jesus' Resurrection, Yancey gives some personal life experience to
connect with the reader, and explain the significance of Easter Sunday. He tells the story of how his
cat died on Easter Sunday when he was young. It was on this day that Yancey learned what he called
"the ugly world," irreversible. Then later on in his life he ends up loosing three friends in one year.
All three died in different situations, but it was a difficult time for Yancey. He uses the deaths of his
friends as another event that is irreversible. He compares the loss of his cat and friends to the feeling
of loss the disciples had when Jesus died. The disciples grieved for Jesus' death just as Yancey did
for his cat and friends,

The Jewish Roots of Christian Liturgy
I Introduction First Christian communities appeared in Jewish Palestine and Diaspora after the death
of Jesus of Nazareth, called the Christ, around 30 CE. Not only Jesus himself was a Jew, but also his
followers and very first members of the new growing community were mainly Jews. They all shared
the Jewish belief, the Sacred Scripture that Christians later started to call the Old Testament (OT),
and were not aware of founding a new religion. A closer examination of Jewish worship will let us
understand how it influenced the new Christian worship. We will have a closer look at places of
worship, liturgical sources and customs which were common at that time. A last task will be to ask
whether there are any significant Jewish elements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are some references to this pattern in the gospels (e.g. Lk 2,38; Mt 11,25–30; Jn 11,41–42).
Further we will see how some of these prayers in connection with the domestic Jewish worship were
essential for the Christian liturgy of the Eucharist.
D. The third main place of Jewish worship was home, especially during the time of meal. In the OT
the communion of meal and feast was understood as a sign of covenant (eg. Gen 26,30). The
Sabbath as a day was a special sign of covenant with God (Ex 31, 13–15) and so was the meal. The
main meal of the year was the Passover meal, as a memorial day for the Lord's passover in Egypt
and deliverance from slavery (Ex 12). The weekly Sabbath meal on Friday evenings and the yearly
Passover meal thus became quite elaborate. Bradshaw reminds that there is unfortunately no
detailed evidence about meal–prayers in the first century, but according to the later evidence many
assume that every meal started with berakot (plural of berakah) and ended with them. The opening
berakot were pronounced over wine and bread, while the berakot at the end of the meal, called
Birkat ha–mazon, consisted of a berakah for food, a hodayah for revelation and a tefillah for
redemption (Bradshaw: 44f; Kavanagh: 621). For Christians the Last Supper with Jesus, which was
a Passover meal, assumed a new meaning (Eucharist) – as a thanksgiving and

Liturgy Speech Analysis
In 1933, a start of a tragic event identified as the Holocaust and also known as The Shoah occurred.
The Holocaust is known to be an annihilation that changed history, in which Adolf Hitler and Nazi
Germany killed about six million Jews. During the era of the Holocaust, German authorities also
targeted other groups because of their supposed "racial inferiority" and not just the Jews alone.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer attempted to make sense of the 'mystery of God' during the Shoah by believing
that 'Being a Christian is less about cautiously avoiding sin than about courageously and actively
doing God's will' (Eric Metaxas, unknown). Bonhoeffer did not blame God for the incidents that
took place in the Shoah but in fact he took a stand to what he believed ... Show more content on

Since this speech took place during the Holocaust, Pius XII had no choice but to share his words
what he thought of this disaster that was taking place. However this speech about the extermination
of society and racism was very vague towards his audience, thus lead to confusion towards the
crowd; he however also addressed that Russia was a threat to Germany which triggered Hitler to
start targeting the Catholics. Yet in 1965, a document called Nostra Aetate came out from the
Catholic Church which focuses on the relationships between the Jews and Catholics but never did
mention the Holocaust at all in the document. Later in 1998 the Vatican then, decided to apologize
for its treatment towards the Jews in the Holocaust. Relating these two documented events that
firstly went to super vague to very clear, states that the reason why Pius XII wanted his speech to be
unclear towards his audience is so that the Nazis wouldn't have targeted him, as he never showed
arrogance towards the Jews and the Nazis; but lived in fear to see if he was targeted next. However
the reason why the Vatican decided to publish a very clear document about their opinions in the later
years, was because they knew this war was over so they decided to apologize to the Jews on how
they mistreated them, this makes the Vatican's look like cowards as the people in 1942 thought

Essay on The Liturgy of Humiliation
The 18th century was an incredibly different time, full of corruption and brutality. New France is a
great example of just how brutal this time period was and Peter Moogk's "The Liturgy of
Humiliation, Pain and Death: The Execution of Criminals in New France," is an article that puts the
justice system of New France under a proverbial microscope, analyzing execution and humiliation
techniques used by the government and the Church. It tries to emphasize the influence that religion
and the crown had on criminalization techniques used in New France and just how much control
they obtained through the fear produced by public executions. Moogk

The man's neck is then clasped by the grotesque hands of the executioner and he is throttled back
and forth as his last breaths are forced from his body (Moogk, Peter, The liturgy of
Humiliation, Pain and Death: Execution of Criminals in New France, pg. 98.) This is definitely a
deterrent for anyone else to ever even think of attempting a similar crime. Even if a deceased man is
convicted for a crime his cadaver and his memory must accept the corresponding punishment.
Sergeant Henri Begard of Quebec City was involved in a duel and was found dead on the street in
January of 1698. Although He was deceased, Moogk explains that he was found guilty for starting
the duel that led to his own death. The body was to be dragged by a hurdle, face down through the
streets of Quebec City. All of his worldly possessions were confiscated by the crown and his
memory defamed for eternity (Moogk, pg. 97.) These stories were just a few examples of the
excellent situations presented by Moogk and just how well the words create a visual aid, making the
article have that much more of an impact on the reader, as well as help to promote the argument that
is presented. One of Moogk's main focuses of the article seems to be the idea that, contrary to
popular belief, the church and religion in general provided an immense amount of influence on the
perception of crime and how

My Catholic Church Experience Paper
On April 11th, 2017, I attended mass in the Blessed Edmund Chapel. Unlike other weekday masses,
this one was scheduled at 7 AM because of it being Holy Tuesday. Never having been to a Catholic
mass before, all of this was a new experience. Growing up in a non–denominational Christian
household, I did not have a clue what to expect. From this experience, I was able to gain insight into
the Catholic practices and how they conduct their masses. It also helped to expand on the teachings
we discussed in religion class. When you first walked into the Blessed Edmund Rice Chapel, you
see chairs lined up in front of the altar and podium. Underneath a majority of the chairs, lay a bible
to follow along with the sermon of the mass. In front, in front of the altar, there were two candles
that a Brother lit during the mass. Even though the chapel being small might seem like a
disadvantage, I thought that this feature offered a more personal and close experience. Up on the
altar, in between the candles, there was a wooden figure of Jesus on the cross. It was in a way
similar to churches I have attended before, except there was no altar or podium, and was ... Show

It was interesting to finally see the Catholic religion in practice rather than discussing it. I learned
how the worship differs from the fellowship church and at a Catholic Mass. This was my first time
experiencing music like this and also having a service conducted like this. It took a shorter period of
time than I was used to and involved less singing. Attending a Catholic mass definitely helped me to
better understand the practices of Catholics. It taught me more about scripture and also provided me
with an insight to a different religion's customs. From this experience I will take away a new
knowledge of the religion the college I attend represents. It also showed me what a Brother exactly

Devotions In Catholic Religion
The Catholic Church has many devotions that popes, bishops, priests, deacons, and lay people say
and do in their everyday life. Devotions are practices of piety which is not part of the Liturgy of the
Church but is part of the spiritual practices of Catholics. Some examples of devotions Catholics
practice in their everyday lives are the Mass, the rosary, novenas, adoration in front of the Eucharist,
veneration to the saints, the Liturgy of the Hours, wearing scapulars and wearing medals, and many
others. Devotions are made to help people grow in their faith and love for Jesus.
The Liturgy of the Hours has three names. The three names are The Liturgy of the Hours, the Divine
Office, and the Breviary. The latin word for The Liturgy of the Hours is Liturgia Horarum. This
consists of mainly Psalms, added by hymns, readings, and other prayers. The Liturgy of the Hours is
the official prayer of the church, said many times in the day in order to sanctify it. Clergy and
religious officials have an obligation to say it because of the Canon Law as official representatives
to the church. The laity are expected to recite it whether it is with a priest, by themselves or with
others. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Greek Orthodox Church is encompassed by Livingston's working definition of religion. Every
symbol in the Greek Orthodox Church is directly related to that which "sacred value and
transforming power." For example, during our visit to the church, we noticed that the main
sanctuary was clearly divided into three sections by a wall with images of saints and icons, which is
known as the iconostasis. I learned that the three different sections are the narthex, the nave, and the
altar. Upon further research, the iconostasis symbolizes the link between heaven and Earth, the gate
which we will one day be able to cross. There are typically paintings of saints and icons on the
iconostasis, which that also holds meaning for the church goers. Because this area is typically not
accessible by the church goes, it provides a clear indication for what we should strive for: to
someday access heaven. Thus, this corresponds to one of the types of theodicies that Livingston
presents. Greek Orthodox believe in an other–worldly theodicy. They believe that they will
eventually be rewarded after death in another world. During Orthros, only the reverend can be
behind the iconostasis. This area, known as the altar or sanctuary, is one of the holiest space within
the church and not many are allowed to enter

Skills And Ethics Of Human Services Course
In my CEPD 3200: Skills and Ethics in Human Services course, I had to complete three hours of
service learning in a facility of my choice. For my Service Learning Project, I volunteered at
Southern Hills Christian Church, a local church that my family attends. Southern Hills Christian
Church has a church service for children in Kindergarten–3rd grade called "All Stars", which is
where I completed my service learning hours. I chose to complete my hours at the church in the
children's department because I have an interest in wanting to work with children as a career. Also, I
am an active volunteer at my church, so I did not need to go through any background checks,
paperwork, etc. The following is what I did while completing my service learning hours, what I
learned, and how I can apply this into the real world. The All Stars children service at Southern Hills
Christian Church runs for three different services on Sunday mornings, and one service on
Wednesday nights. I attended two separate Sunday morning services and one Wednesday night
service. The two Sunday morning services that I attended were each on a different Sunday. Before
each service begins, there is a game rom that the children who attend service can play in while they
are waiting for service to commence, as some come early before the service starts. Since I came
early, I used this time to interact with the children, such as asking how their day was going, playing

Liturgy of Saint Denis and Companions
Part 1 Liturgy of Saint Denis and Companions
October 9 is the celebration day of the feast of St. Denis and his companions, Rusticus the priest and
Eleutherius the deacon, who were both martyred alongside and buried with him. Veneration of St.
Denis and his companions began shortly after his death and added to the Roman calendar in 1568 by
Pius V, even though it had already been celebrated regularly since about the year 800 AD. In
traditional Catholic practice, Denis is invoked against diabolical possession and issues of head pain,
the obvious allusion to his beheading. (St. Denis and Companions, 2012). In the Middle Ages many
wore bright colors, some encrusted with jewels during the Feast of St. Denis, particularly in those
cathedrals named after him. This was to signify the movement into a world of light and comfort
based on suffering on earth (Levy, ed., p. 354). Feasts of the saints arose from the early Christian
customs of both commemorating their death and their rebirth into heaven. The readings for the feast
of St. Denis include material from Paul's second letter to the Corinthians (6: 4–10) in which Paul
emphasizes that humans are servants of God in all ways. It is through endurance in hardships,
imprisonments, hunger, and hate that the Holy Spirit enters into us and helps us understand that
there is a greater plan. The issue of "sowing in tears shall reap rejoicing" focuses on the issue of
suffering on this plane of existence versus finding spiritual comfort

What Was The Impact Of Jane Murray On The Liturgy
In the beginning of the 20th century, Pope Pius X had initiated a liturgical movement, in which he
wrote a document in 1903 on sacred music entitled "Tra le sollectitudini," (Hitchcock). In the
Second Vatican Council, the fathers produced the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, which was
their first work. This Constitution was entitled Sacrosanctum Concilium (1963). In the Constitution,
the fathers described the use of liturgy as vital in Catholic life, thus calling for liturgical reform.
This reform stressed that active participation of the laity, so that the liturgy would become a central
part of each faithful Catholic's life because the real objective of this reform of the liturgy was for it
to become central. Jane Mary Murray is just one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
John's in 1929. There, she, as well as the other attendees, wrote five small laboratory manuals
entitled "With Mother Church," (Feldhege). However, Murray and a few other attendees saw that
those manuals were inadequate for religion education, so Murray, Fr. Virgil Michel and Estelle
Hackett begin writing a Christ Life series, in which these books served as textbook for school
students, in which they started out as elementary school books and then later they begin writing
textbooks for high schools. These textbooks included liturgy of the church as well as catholic liturgy
(Laesch). When she had finished writing the Christ Life series, Murray enrolled into one class at the
Institute of Medieval Studies, in which the course was based on the Summa Theological of St.
Thomas Aquinas. This course led Murray to the idea of writing a high school course study based on
the Summa, so she started writing a textbook on it. In her biography, Murray described what
inspired her to write this high–school course textbook, saying, "I became convinced that the
magnificent order of his exposition of sacred doctrine held advantages for high–school students as
well as specialists in universities," (5). By January 1956, Murray's textbook about the Summa was

Baptism is very important, in the East, it would be very difficult for a bishop to give every baptism;
the priest performs the confirmation using the chrism consecrated by the Bishop.
In the West, there is a separation of time between Baptism and Confirmation. Bishops give
confirmation after Baptism and only when a child reaches the age of reason. In the West, The desire
to reserve the completion of Baptism to the Bishop caused a separation between the two sacraments.
He can do so only with the approval of the Bishop.
From 1291 – 1292, the Roman Church conducted Confirmation by a double anointing with sacred
oil after Baptism. The first anointing new person on coming out of the baptismal bath performed by
priest, then completed by second appointing on the forehead by newly baptized by the Bishop. In
addition, Easter in Church gave greater emphasis on the unity of Confirmation as a Christian
initiation. Latin Church clearly expresses the communion of the new Christian with Bishop as
guarantor and servant of the unity, catholicity and apostolicity of the Church and establishes
connection with the apostolic origins of Christ's Church.
By 1293, Confirmation as a spiritual seal (receiving the mark of the Holy Spirit) with the use chrism

Mass V. Mary's Catholic Church
The religious institution that I observed is affiliated with Christianity. Catholics worship is called
Mass and that is what I observed and reflected about. As many of my friends are Catholic, I thought
it would be interesting to go and experience a Catholic Mass, and watch what all happens during
one. Given the opportunity to go to St. Mary's Catholic church in my hometown with my friend's
family, and experience the Mass first hand.
As I stepped into the church, I already felt a warm, welcoming feeling. A couple of the members of
the church were at the door to greet one another to point us in the direction of where the worship
would take place. From there, I had to dip my hands in the holy water and make a cross over my,

From listening to the daily readings and reflecting on them with psalms and hymns, I could see a
focused approach to the word. All the readings motivated us to see and face all the challenges that
were in the real world today. The gospel and sermon spoke by the priest were, even more of a
celebration of the word and to proclaim our faith outside the church. Following the time of listening
and reflecting on the readings of the day, I noticed that it was then time to reflect and act upon faith.
Worshippers would bring up offerings and gifts that would be blessed and accepted by Jesus. I think
the public display of communion with all the worshipers was evident when everyone went up to the
altar to receive the bread, which is similar my church. I think that the second part of Mass showed
the actions of faith that were taken after celebrating the word of God. Overall, the service was
pleasing and enjoyable to observe. The visit made me see and understand the Mass and the
symbolism that the church itself has. I enjoyed the first part of listening to the word and having the
priest apply the sermon and readings directly into our lives today and then the second part, seeing
everyone participate in gathering gifts and communion, showing their faith and proclaiming it. I
found the choir to be interesting that they do most of the singing with sometimes everyone singing
but overall it was a good

My Call To Love In Tish Harrison Warren's Liturgy Of The...
Being called to love can be summed up by Jesus's words in Matthew 22:37–40, when he says,
"'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is
the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All
the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." My understanding of how to love
God and love my neighbor has certainly been shaped by the material in this course thus far,
especially by the consistent prayerful attitude discussed in Liturgy of the Ordinary. By
implementing spiritual disciplines such as lectio divina and close reading, I have been able to center
myself on this prayerful attitude and more effectively live out my call to love God and others.
Through Tish Harrison Warren's Liturgy of the Ordinary, I have gained a greater understanding of
what being called to love means, and I have learned multiple practical means by which I can live out
my call to love. Harrison Warren illustrates the idea that our call to love is not one that is to be
separated from the mundane tasks of our daily lives; on the contrary, our call to love is to be
embraced in the midst of and through these mundane tasks. Throughout the first few chapters of the
book, the main idea has been to love God more deeply by having an attitude of prayerfulness, which
one could certainly consider a spiritual discipline. Whether Harrison Warren is speaking of the
liturgy of bed–making or teeth–brushing, the

Essay on Why the Christian Ritual of Communion is So Special
As a Christian, there are many different rituals that many different denominations of Christianity
follow. One common ritual among most denominations of Christianity is partaking in communion
together as a church on Sundays. This ritual holds a special place in my heart. It is important to me
because every time I take communion I am reminded of who put me here. I am also reminded of
what Jesus did to save me for my sins and why I am here on this Earth. Communion begins with the
presentation of the bread and the wine. The bread represents the body of Jesus, broken and put on a
cross to forgive us for our sins. The wine represents the blood of Jesus, spilt while he was on the
cross to once again forgive us of our sins on this Earth. The ... Show more content on

The priest begins by talking about how on the night Jesus was betrayed, he called his disciples to a
room to have dinner. To start off dinner, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks to God, and told his
disciples, "Take this, all of you, and eat of it. This is my body, which will be given up for you."
After saying this, the priest lifts up the bread while one of the altar servers rings a bell three times.
After laying the bread down, the priest picks up the chalice of wine. The priest tells the church that
after supper was over Jesus took a chalice of wine and told his disciples "Take this, all of you, and
drink from it. This is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be
shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me." The priest lifts up
the wine while the same altar server rings the same bell three times. After laying down the goblet of
wine, the priest kneels, says a small prayer, and proclaims the mystery of faith. There are many
different mysteries of faith that he may proclaim. One popular mystery states, "Christ has died.
Christ is risen. Christ will come again." After proclaiming the mystery, the priest picks up the bread
and says, "This is the lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are
called to his supper." The members of the church reply, saying, "Lord, I am not worthy to receive
you. But only say the word and I shall be healed." The priest takes a piece of

Observation Report #4. The Easter Vigil: Holy Family Catholic
Observation Report #4
The Easter Vigil: Holy Family Catholic Church
The Easter Triduum takes place during Holy Week, which commemorates step by step the last
events in the life of Jesus. It is a very symbolic ritual because it reenacts His passion, death and
resurrection. The Easter Triduum, which lasts three days, includes the Easter Vigil, the most
important of all Christian celebrations. The celebration, which takes place on the night of Holy
Saturday, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Although this is a very long service, I
think that every year is a different and beautiful experience. I always attend the Holy Week services,
but I especially enjoy participating in the Easter Vigil because I believe it is the most ... Show more

The Paschal Candle reminds us of the resurrection of Christ, the light a symbol of life, Christ as the
light of the world that comes to illuminate our lives with his Resurrection. This was followed by the
procession, the congregation followed the priests and ministers, a deacon carried the Paschal
Candle. I would say that at this point, the catechumens had the most important role in the
celebration because they were about to be welcomed into the life of the Church.
Another important part of the celebration took place inside the temple, the Exultet or Easter
Proclamation was sung by a member of the choir. In the past, a priest or a deacon has sung the
Exultet, so this was new to me. The Exultet is a song of hope and triumph, because Christ has
overcome death. The Exultet is followed by the Liturgy of the Word, which consisted in readings
from the Old Testament, the epistle and the Gospel. The readings summarize the history of
Salvation. For example, the reading from Genesis described creation, the reading from the Exodus
the liberation of Egypt and the Gospel proclaimed the Resurrection of Christ. After each reading
psalms were sung. However, during this celebration there were only 4 readings. During the reading
of the Gospel, candles were relit to remind us the resurrection of Christ. The priest gave a very short
homily and continued with the Liturgy of Baptism, the

led by selfish desires and ambitions...He freed us by his redeeming passion and on this same Friday

In the Shimo (divine office) of the Malankara Catholic Church there is typological presentation of
Mary almost every day. In Malankara Catholic Liturgy we find three important typologies of Mary
namely Mary as Mother of God, Mary as the Holy Virgin and Mary as our intercessor. The Mother
of God typology are 'Chariot of Ezekiel', 'the ark of the covenant', 'the pot containing Manna', 'the
rod of Aaron', 'the new jar of Elisha' and 'the rock that produced water'. An example from Shimo
illustrates this below.
"In the law and in prophecy Moses, the head of the prophets: represented the figure of the blessed
mother, by ark of the law and the pot of manna, and by the staff of Aaron which budded within the
holy of holies, and by the dew and the flee of Gideon and by the new jar of Eliseus and by the light
cloud of the glorious Isaiah." (Shimo; Subaho; Ramsho on Wednesday; 3rd qolo; 2nd Para)
The Virginity typology of Mary are 'the burning bush that Moses saw', 'closed door of the chariot of
Ezekiel', 'flee of Gideon', 'the closed garden' and 'the sealed fountain of Solomon'. The following
extract from Shimo illustrates Virginity typology of Mary.

Reflection Of Psalm 121
I read this passage to Cindy a few times over the last 2 ½ years. It always seemed to bring her peace
as she processed her next step in this journey. Psalm 121 seems to speak of the tough times in our
lives and how we can still find peace. God does not live in some celestial tower, far away from the
world God created. God cares for all the people and all of creation. God cares for us amidst all the
twists and turns of life's journey. It is that conviction which inspires Psalm 121, a Psalm I read again
to Cindy in the last week of her life. Psalm 121 is sometimes called „the traveler‟s Psalm‟. It was a
psalm sung by pilgrims as they made their annual journey to Jerusalem. It expressed their faith in
God, but also reflected the unease they felt about travel. "I look to the mountains; where will my
help come from?" (v.1). Mountains may be beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. Mountains are
places where people lose their lives. No, the hills are not the place from which our help comes –
rather they are the place where help is needed. Here in this Psalm, the hills or mountains represented
the perils of the journey, for it was in the ravines and gorges of the mountain ranges that wild beasts
and robbers hid. As the pilgrims looked to the mountain ranges they had to cross if they were to
reach Jerusalem, they were filled with foreboding and wondered from where their help would come.
It is in this situation that the Psalmist declares: "My help will come from the Lord, the

Dreamers Of Religion
It's a warm Sunday morning coast to coast, as little boys and girls rush to the church that sits
patiently waiting for them to arrive. Their parents follow behind, walking just fast enough to keep
up, but not so fast that they too look like children. The elderly seem to have already taken their
seats, as they like to arrive early in order to obtain their reserved spot only made so according to
them. Whether the congregation gathers in a barn or a cathedral, you will always find the same three
types of churchgoers: the hypocrite, the seeker, and the day dreamer. The hypocrite goes to church
as if they were going on stage at Broadway. They put on an elaborate act, declaring they are
Christian, and seem to have everyone fooled. They may show up every Sunday, but this is just so

The day dreamer sways back in forth from wanting to further their relationship with God and just
wanting the service to be over with. They pay attention to some parts but for the majority of the
service they are day dreaming and thinking about lunch rather than the message the preacher is
trying to relay to the congregation. The day dreamers of the church body seem to be what holds
everything together. They bring in the numbers especially on the holidays and create some liveliness
in the church that otherwise wouldn't exist. This group pays little attention to the politics of the
church and couldn't care more about who's on the vestry or not. Children are included into the day
dreamer category because even though they are seen as Christians and attend church they aren't
necessarily there for spiritual nourishment. They are there to attend Sunday school and walk into
church during the children's homily in order to entertain the adults and prove that the church does

Personal Statement : ' Freedom Church
For my second analysis, I went to a church in my hometown of Paris, Texas called Freedom Church.
This church is a new non–denominational church that is trying to reach to the "de–churched and
unchurched" as their tag line says. They have only been operational now for less than a year, so they
are still trying to get new people to join their church. For this reason, this past Friday they put on a
huge Easter event for kids and adults that had games, dinner, and a worship service. I saw and
experienced some aspects of what non–denominational believe, and the freedom this church let
people have during worship. There were also many things that happened throughout the service that

Personally, I did not go into this part of the service with a good attitude because of the glow–in–the–
dark theme service. I did not see how this would aid my worship or improve it by any means, but I
still decided to go of course. The pastor was very inviting in the welcome and then showed a
worship video. I liked this video on worship because it helped get my mind in the right mindset that
I needed to be in for worship. Then the worship band came up and began the service very smooth.
There were a lot of lights directed at the band, and as we began worship it reminded me of what the
beginning of a concert would look like. In class we talked about how we do not worship to be a
show, but an acceptance of the invitation God has given us to worship Him. While worship began,
the thought of this conversation popped in my head as the lights started to flash transitioning into
the next song. As worship progressed, we continued singing more and more upbeat songs that were
mostly about the Spirit, and people started to respond more and more emotionally. I was able to
personally worship as freely as I wanted to, but the lights again started to actually distract me from
truly worshipping. It was very moving though to see people responding to the Holy Spirit by
kneeling, praying, and raising hands. The worship leader was also very expressive of his emotions
during the service. This occurrence also made me think

The Importance Of The Symbol System Of The Msm Liturgy On...
1.0 Introduction Ritual can be defined as a religious or solemn ceremony which is made up of a
sequence of actions performed in order to achieve a particular outcome. The purpose of this
ethnographic report is to examine the effectiveness of the symbol system of the MSM liturgy in
terms of the ritual purpose and the extent of the reflection on Christian stories and beliefs of the
Easter Triduum. This case study aims to analyse the level of engagement and understanding in the
community of the symbol system represented in the MSM liturgy in terms of the Easter Triduum by
surveying students and conducting an interview. The symbol system of the MSM liturgy on Holy
Thursday was highly effective in engaging the community in a reflection on the Easter Story when
the participants came with prior knowledge, as this offered a better understanding and insight to the
liturgy which made it easier to follow. The contemporary symbols were engaging and effectively
communicated the Easter Story to the whole community, whereas the traditional elements were
ineffective in engaging the majority of the members. 2.0 Method of Inquiry 2.1 Primary Data
Primary data was data collected and is evident throughout the report in the form of student surveys
(Refer to appendix 1), teacher interviews (Refer to appendix 2), Ms Terrey's address as well as
photos and the order of service which was gathered from the liturgy and booklet. All the primary
sources provided insider perspective into the liturgy

Thomas More Catholic Community Analysis
St. Thomas More Catholic Community uses a variety of components that encompasses their musical
experience during Mass. First, I want to note that the liturgy uses non–linguistic sounds in addition
to speech like organs, pianos, hand bells, bell tree chimes for processions and sanctuary bells
(Director of Liturgy, Worship & Music). Furthermore, music is an essential element of the liturgy –
it is "normative to Sunday worship (Director of Liturgy, Worship & Music).
It is typical for a Sunday Mass to begin with the Gathering song that opens worship that is sung by
the choir and the assembly to unite in prayer. In complement to it, Mass ends with the Closing song

Most of the prayers are committed to memory and occur without change throughout the liturgical
year – this includes both spoken and sung responses. In the case of the Responsorial Psalm, the
cantor presents the refrain and the assembly repeats it (Director of Liturgy, Worship & Music). Even
during communion, it is typical for a familiar song refrain to be sung by the parish as they process in
the communion line. The cantor and choir will sing the verses and the assembly joins in on the
simple refrain, so it is easily committed to memory through repetition and singing (Hoden,
"Christian Music Before the Reformation" 13). Naturally, the ability to read can enhance
participation, but it is not

The Development Of Catholic Worship
The development of Catholic understanding is expressed through Cristian doctrines and features of
Catholic communal life. Catholic Christianity raises and attempts to answer questions of ultimate
meaning and value through "rule of faith" and Catholic worship. Sacraments are a part of Catholic
worship as they are involved in the liturgical life within church. The rule of faith is a community's
measurement of someone's faith. The kerygma is six discourses that are referred to as
"proclamation" and summarize Christian faith (125). Some of the ultimate meaning and value
questions include: what is the ultimate meaning of Jesus Christ; what is the ultimate meaning behind
baptism; and how is the liturgy a part of Catholic value these questions will be answered through
information provided in Cunningham's text.
Firstly, belief in Jesus Christ is a major part of Catholicism. Throughout time, there's been much
discussion about whether or not Jesus was a human. There was much suspicion about the bread and
wine actually being Christ's body and blood. In chapter 5, Catholic Worship, it was explained that
"Catholics believe that the coming of Jesus Christ, who was the Word of flesh" was a great
sacrament (101). Christ was considered to being a great sacrament because he was the visible sign
of God's presence which symbolized God's love for Earth. Christ should be considered God made
man. The Holy Eucharist is a sacrament that is related to the center of Christian life. The Eucharist

Race, Gender, And Women
During the time I observed Mass there was a dominate race in attendance–mostly Caucasian (around
200) with several Hispanics (around 50) and very few African Americans (only three); however,
there was not a dominate sex or age of the attendees. There seemed to be an equal amount of males
and females, and a vast degree of age–newborns to very elderly among the participants. The
clothing of the participants was very formal and respectful. Most women either wore long dresses or
skirt with leggings or tights underneath, some women wore pants; however, there was only a few
women in pants; all women wore shirts that did not show very much (if any) cleavage–some women
(around ten) wore black, white, gray, or brown veils over their heads–at first I believed that the veils
were a sign that the women wearing them were preparing to become nuns; however, several small
children were wearing the veils over their heads, and according to Lauren, the veils are symbolic–
they show respect to the Saints and God by allowing women to observe submissiveness and
obedience. There seems to be no correlation between the veils color and a symbolic meaning behind
the veil color. Men wore suits or khakis and a button up shirt. Women and men were all aware that
they were in a church and must be modest–not shorts or t–shirts or cocktail dresses were seen of the
participants–if someone was to show up to Mass in this attire it would be deemed inappropriate.

Council Of Vatican II
The council of Vatican II was called in 1959 in order to reform the canon law of the Catholic
Church. It was suggested by many that the council focus their energies on reforming liturgical
worship. Joseph Ratzinger, a priest and future pope, used his lecture, "The First Session", in order to
portray what was going on at the council and to give his own views. Ratzinger started by identifying
the fact that the opening ceremonies to the council were very long and hard to keep up with, thus
discouraging involvement in the ceremonies altogether. This was representative of what was
happening to liturgical worship–there was decreased participation.
In order to remedy the immense decrease in participation in Catholic liturgy, the council proposed ...

The document advocated for a return to ancient origins of liturgy, as well as the removal of
historical attachments in order to maintain the "Noble Simplicity". By reforming these aspects, the
ritual of liturgical worship became simpler, and because the ritual was simpler, more people had the
capacity and energy to participate in the ritual. Additionally, the document called for the liturgy to
become more dialogic. By making the Mass like a conversation between the priest and the people
attending the liturgical worship, it actively and directly engages them more, causing a boost in
participation. Another issue that the document dealt with was the issue of governance, and the result
was that the document allowed for the dioceses to have control over their churches' liturgical rituals.
Because of this, rituals could be formatted to match the churches' cultures and environments, and
this would foster more participation in the liturgy, because more people were able to relate to it and
were more eager to participate. Finally, the issue of language was also dealt with by the document.
Churches around the world would now be able to celebrate Mass using the vernacular. This
benefitted liturgies everywhere because more people were able to actually understand and
participate in the Mass, thus increasing full and active engagement in the liturgical celebrations.
Because of the Sancrosanctum Concilium, the first document of the Second Vatican Council, the
liturgy of the Catholic Church was reformed in a way in which the liturgy would foster full,
conscious, and active participation among all

theological, biblical, and historical facets and ultimately determines that "Worship has never been
practiced in all places by all people in one way (18). In order to discuss the various types of worship
in a congenial way, Basden introduces six authors that are charged with defending and critique each
other's methods.
First, Paul Zahl defines and defends the practice of formal–liturgical worship. For Zahl, formal–

Best acknowledges that often in "worship skirmishes" what divides is not what is important, namely
truth, but instead what is temporal, namely music style. For Best, the most effective way to worship
is to rely upon the historical truth preserved in the hymn book.
In Chapter 3, Joe Horness sets forth an argument for contemporary music–driven worship. This
style of worship has an emphasis on relationship. Horness seeks to set forth the true goal of
contemporary worship. It is not just about the instrumentation; instead it focuses on the
communication. Horness takes the reader personally through his journey from traditional worship to
contemporary worship, including his experience with Willow Creek Church. In his chapter, Horness
promotes an emphasis on connecting: connecting unbelievers with believers and ultimately,
connecting all people with God. He states, "People of this generation are longing to experience the
genuine presence of God. And God is longing to move in and among the hearts of his people. If we
will learn to worship from hearts that are fully engaged, God will be glorified and set free to move
in us and among us (104)." Horness ends his chapter with some brief warnings for those involved in
the contemporary worship. He then encourages all worshipers to seek above all to bring their best to

Summary Of The 124th Psalm
Introduction
In the 124th Psalm, voice is given to a beautiful question about the tragic reality that would have
been theirs if their "help" had come from anyone but the LORD. The "what if?" question is worth
asking, and numerous moments recorded in the Hebrew Bible speak of times of strife where, in the
end, "God comes through." Dr. Toni Craven describes the whole of the Psalms as "a self–contained
religious library of prayer in that it incorporates an enormously wide spectrum of issues and reflects
various historical backgrounds.[footnoteRef:0]" The echoes of those moments in the narratives of
the Hebrew Bible are heard behind the words of Psalm 124. Fortunately, the utter destruction the
124th Psalm alludes to doesn't come to fruition. In spite of the power wielded by their enemies,
power that is as consuming as the appetite of a devouring monster and as uncontrollably destructive
as a flash flood raging, and even though the ones who are against the people of God possess a grasp
that is as sure and as strong as a hunter's well–set snare, those mortals cannot overcome the ones the
LORD chooses to defend. Instead, their rescue from that trouble receives the emphasis and is
celebrated as the salvific, liberating work of God. Claus Westermann aptly describes Psalm 124
thusly: "Psalm 124 is able to transport us into the hour in which Israel looked back upon a rescue
from grave trouble and summed up this experience of deliverance in language of relived praise,

I attended the liturgy at Faithful Savior Lutheran Church located in Southeast Portland on the

came there as a guest speaker after the liturgy. I experienced a different but similar way of worship
service, since they are quite different from each other in the concept of communion but very similar
in general structures. The service begins at 10:30 every Sunday morning. I was told that they would
only do liturgical communion on the first and third Sunday of the month. The architecture of the
church gives me the impression that it is alike the Catholic Church. The church features the typical
Catholic Church structure: Square building made of red bricks, triangular roof with a cross on top. It

that they did not believe the power of confession. Communion was offered afterwards, and they

Psalm 60 Analysis
Anderson's paper is written to discuss the possible dating of Psalm 60 based on the way one would
read and analyze it. His main point is to warn against trying to date the psalms without adequate
support; many different scholars are used by Anderson to prove his point that dating is hard to do
when you do not have enough information. However, he incorporated the LXX and MT as well as
other psalms to solidify his claim for the date he gave the psalm. Anderson gives the reader a form–
critical analysis, historical–critical analysis of the oracle and the complaint, and gives a text–critical
analysis before trying to date the psalm himself. The article begins with Anderson stating the

Using other scholars and their research added to the argument, however, it would have been even
more convincing if he would have included a more balanced view of scholars who agreed as well as
disagreed with the view that he presented in the text. Overall, however, Anderson presented his view
with enough support to convince me that his dating is the most accurate, simply because it is clear in
his work that he put in the effort and care enough about the topic to search for the most reliable date
based on facts presented. In his work, Anderson stresses that dating a psalm is not an easy task, but
he made an honest and well thought out attempt at dating the psalm. Therefore, I believe that overall
the text is a good example for other scholars to use to try and date other psalms as well as
understand the process of knowing the culture of the Bible even more for a more thorough
appreciation for what the text is conveying about God and his

The Meaning Of Liturgy In Here Be The Dragons By Michael...
The meaning of liturgy may not be debatable but how that definition functions becomes contestable
as it is performed in different settings. Thus, when interpreting a liturgical theology, it would figure,
that the same notion would apply. Joyce Zimmerman writes, "...Who interprets liturgy? Is the
realization that the practice of liturgy involves a number of competencies at a number of levels."
Liturgy by its nature is not static there by constitutes a multileveled evaluation and approach when
interpreting. There are no set parameters or guidelines that designate the functional aspects of the
liturgy. Liturgy has the potential to take on any form it desires in order to accomplish the objective
of moving people to discourse. Liturgy has this Michael Jackson appeal. It has the ability to
conform to certain parameters when needed but always functioning within itself to meet its on
transcendent perspective. Like Michael Jackson, liturgy can masks itself in a litany of otherness in
order to make itself more appealing to others in order to further the discourse. James Baldwin
highlights Michael's chameleon like abilities in Here be the Dragons,
The Michael Jackson cacophony is fascinating in that it is not about Jackson at all. I hope he has the
good sense to know it and the good fortune to snatch his life out of the jaws of a carnivorous
success. He will not swiftly be forgiven for having turned so many tables, for he damn sure grabbed
the brass ring, and the man who broke the

Worship Analysis : The Baptist Church
Worship Analysis #2 For my second analysis, I went to a church in my hometown of Paris, Texas
called Freedom Church. This church is a new non–denominational church that is trying to reach to
the "de–churched and unchurched" as their tag line says. They have only been operational now for
less than a year, so they are still trying to get new people to join their church. For this reason, this
past Friday they put on a huge Easter event for kids and adults that had games, dinner, and a
worship service. I saw and experienced some aspects of what non–denominational believe or
practice, but also noticed that they had some Baptist influence in their service. Though they did
some things different, I found throughout the service there were some similarities to the Baptist
church I attended. There were also many things that happened throughout the service that I noticed
are things that we talked about in class that I found they were successful in accomplishing or they
failed at. First off, the evening started off with a dinner and an Easter egg hunt for the kids. While
eating dinner many of the people from the church were very inviting and kind. They introduced
themselves to me and asked me questions about how I was and things like that. There were some of
the staff that were more stand offish then the other people were. Overall though, the people and
atmosphere of the church was very inviting and joyful which gave me a great first impression. We
then moved into the sanctuary that

Book Review Essay of "Hungry for Worship

  • 1. Hungry for Worship Book Review Essay LIBERTY UNIVERSITY HUNGRY FOR WORSHIP BY BOOK REVIEW SUBMITTED TO DR. RODNEY WHALEY IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COMPLETION OF THE COURSE MUSC 610 – TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR WORSHIP BY KIANAN SMITH LYNCHBURG, VA JUNE 2014 Name: Kianan Smith Book Report # Spring 2014 Semester Hungry for Worship by: Frank S. Page and L. Lavon Gray Chapter 1: Summary: In this text, Hungry for Worship, authors Frank Page and L. Gray write about the hunger for worshipping God that all leaders should possess. In chapter 1, both authors begin the text with the concept of how the body has fallen in love with the method of worship and not the actual act of being in the Presence of God. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They give examples from C.S. Lewis when discussing this subject. They quote Lewis with the term "Chronological snobbery". This term means that while older generations only find value in the traditions and heritage of our faith, the younger generations only find relevance in what is current. They also write this type of separation between the young and old has effectively begun dismembering the body of Christ limb by limb. The authors also put focus on the act of individual preferences through church shopping. This according to Page and Gray, result in the encouraging of churches to offer consumer–driven programming in order to keep members on their rolls. They give scripture which identifies the importance of unity. Ephesians 4:14–16 shows how the body of Christ should be unified in the midst of diversity. Leaders should work extra hard to keep the church family worshipping together. The authors condemn chronological snobbery and suggest that both the young and old come together. The young generation must grow up and the older generation needs to adapt. Analysis: The authors point out a huge problem that is alive and well in the church. Due to personal preferences, the church has separated itself from one another. Not only are different cultures separate but the age differences within the church are separated amongst themselves. The leaders of worship within the church whether they are pastors or worship band leaders must not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Liturgy Personal Statement Attending mass every Saturday and helping at the children's liturgy is what ultimately ignited my enthusiasm to become a primary school teacher. I've always had an interest in the development of children, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. When I commence my career as a teacher in Primary Education, I will strive to make a difference by providing a strong educational foundation for the children. Studying Health and Social care at GCSE while furthering my knowledge by doing Health and Social Care Level 3, has allowed me to develop my understanding of Health and Social care services. This allowed me to address the importance of these services, positive relationships, and behaviour, and developing a child's creativity. Currently volunteering at Acorns Hospice and completing a befriending course has given me a great aspect into the teaching and caring of children with life–threatening or fatal disabilities. I found great inspiration in being able to impact their lives for the better, and how they glowed with positivity from such a negative situation; something I believe I would've never experienced if I hadn't volunteered. The opportunity has allowed me to realise the impact of the role of the teacher, and how significant this role can be to making a difference in the lives of the younger generation, where the classroom can be a sanctity for some and provides unlimited opportunities for most. Outside of the academic environment, I have been nominated as the Health and Social representative for two years and form captain for three years, also participating in the school council and sixth form committee which I find has given me confidence in communication and leadership which I find a key asset in ... • 3. The Reflection Of Education And Values Of The Modern... Are humans merely thinking things that interact in this world from a purely intellectual frame work or is there something more, deeper, richer to the human creature, and how does the way one views human beings shape the way they view and organize education, especially Christian education? These are the main questions raised and discussed in Desiring the Kingdom (Cultural Liturgies): Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation by James K. A. Smith. The main focus of this work is to shift the modern Christian mindset concerning what education is and how one teaches and learns. The author believes that education should be primarily concerned with shaping one's view of the "good life" which means a change from a focus upon one's intellect being bombarded with ideas and doctrines to be learned and believed to a transformation of one's imagination (Smith, 2009, p. 18). The author seeks to accomplish this task by showing modern secular examples of what this world values and how it educates and indoctrinates individuals into its "religion" and then discusses how the church and Christian educational institutions might adopt, or rediscover, this "liturgical" method of forming individuals and communities. Within the first few chapters of this book the author introduces his subject matter by stating the main claim of the book which is that "liturgies– whether 'sacred' or 'secular'– shape and constitute our identities by forming our most fundamental desires and our most basic attunement ... Liturgy is the customary public worship performed as a 'work of the people' by a specific religious group, according to its particular beliefs, customs and traditions. As a religious phenomenon, liturgy is a communal response to, and participation in, the scared through activity reflecting praise, thanksgiving, supplication, or repentance. Ritualization may be associated with life events such as birth, coming of age, marriage and death. • 5. Black Catholic Worship On The Sacred Liturgy Black Catholic worship as we know it today became possible in the mid–1960s when the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy was issued by the Second Vatican Council (1962–65). The constitution opened worship to local languages and encouraged "inculturation" of the liturgy. The first U.S. Mass in English featured a hymn, "God Is Love," by Fr. Clarence Rufus Joseph Rivers, the first African American to be ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, who received a 10– minute ovation. Fr. Rivers pioneered what he termed "Soulfull Worship" and soon was joined by other composers and choir directors to bring a new musical wind into Catholic rites. These pathfinders showed how prayer in African American congregations could be both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... [pp. 127–8] Another scholar of African American Catholic liturgy, Fr. • 6. Essay about The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey Yancey starts out with the image of Jesus. When he was young he had envisioned Jesus to have angelic features such as, young, handsome, and a compassionate face. It wasn't until he entered into a Christian college, that he was introduced to the real image of Jesus. I had an immediate connection with Yancey. I too had an image of Christ in my head, which consisted of Hollywood portrayals and those in classical paintings. It wasn't till I engaged myself at a Christian college, that I have now received a new and more accurate picture of Christ. His book, The Jesus I Never Knew, questions the reader with the thought, "How many Christians today are in the same position, not fully understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, this fact is so true of our society today, but Yancey goes on to show how Jesus makes an extra effort to reach out to he poor. He gives a list, which he got from another writer, on the advantages of being poor. This list really made an impact on me. It showed me how I need to be more open to what God has to say, and not so involved with the materialistic and secular views of today. I need to focus on what God has planned for me, and not make my focus to be what other people think of me. "Strength, good looks, connections, and the competitive instinct may bring a person success in a society like ours, but those very qualities may block entrance to the kingdom of heaven" (Yancey 114). In Jesus' Resurrection, Yancey gives some personal life experience to connect with the reader, and explain the significance of Easter Sunday. He tells the story of how his cat died on Easter Sunday when he was young. It was on this day that Yancey learned what he called "the ugly world," irreversible. Then later on in his life he ends up loosing three friends in one year. All three died in different situations, but it was a difficult time for Yancey. He uses the deaths of his friends as another event that is irreversible. He compares the loss of his cat and friends to the feeling of loss the disciples had when Jesus died. The disciples grieved for Jesus' death just as Yancey did for his cat and friends, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Jewish Roots of Christian Liturgy I Introduction First Christian communities appeared in Jewish Palestine and Diaspora after the death of Jesus of Nazareth, called the Christ, around 30 CE. Not only Jesus himself was a Jew, but also his followers and very first members of the new growing community were mainly Jews. They all shared the Jewish belief, the Sacred Scripture that Christians later started to call the Old Testament (OT), and were not aware of founding a new religion. A closer examination of Jewish worship will let us understand how it influenced the new Christian worship. We will have a closer look at places of worship, liturgical sources and customs which were common at that time. A last task will be to ask whether there are any significant Jewish elements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are some references to this pattern in the gospels (e.g. Lk 2,38; Mt 11,25–30; Jn 11,41–42). Further we will see how some of these prayers in connection with the domestic Jewish worship were essential for the Christian liturgy of the Eucharist. D. The third main place of Jewish worship was home, especially during the time of meal. In the OT the communion of meal and feast was understood as a sign of covenant (eg. Gen 26,30). The Sabbath as a day was a special sign of covenant with God (Ex 31, 13–15) and so was the meal. The main meal of the year was the Passover meal, as a memorial day for the Lord's passover in Egypt and deliverance from slavery (Ex 12). The weekly Sabbath meal on Friday evenings and the yearly Passover meal thus became quite elaborate. Bradshaw reminds that there is unfortunately no detailed evidence about meal–prayers in the first century, but according to the later evidence many assume that every meal started with berakot (plural of berakah) and ended with them. The opening berakot were pronounced over wine and bread, while the berakot at the end of the meal, called Birkat ha–mazon, consisted of a berakah for food, a hodayah for revelation and a tefillah for redemption (Bradshaw: 44f; Kavanagh: 621). For Christians the Last Supper with Jesus, which was a Passover meal, assumed a new meaning (Eucharist) – as a thanksgiving and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Liturgy Speech Analysis In 1933, a start of a tragic event identified as the Holocaust and also known as The Shoah occurred. The Holocaust is known to be an annihilation that changed history, in which Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany killed about six million Jews. During the era of the Holocaust, German authorities also targeted other groups because of their supposed "racial inferiority" and not just the Jews alone. Dietrich Bonhoeffer attempted to make sense of the 'mystery of God' during the Shoah by believing that 'Being a Christian is less about cautiously avoiding sin than about courageously and actively doing God's will' (Eric Metaxas, unknown). Bonhoeffer did not blame God for the incidents that took place in the Shoah but in fact he took a stand to what he believed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since this speech took place during the Holocaust, Pius XII had no choice but to share his words what he thought of this disaster that was taking place. However this speech about the extermination of society and racism was very vague towards his audience, thus lead to confusion towards the crowd; he however also addressed that Russia was a threat to Germany which triggered Hitler to start targeting the Catholics. Yet in 1965, a document called Nostra Aetate came out from the Catholic Church which focuses on the relationships between the Jews and Catholics but never did mention the Holocaust at all in the document. Later in 1998 the Vatican then, decided to apologize for its treatment towards the Jews in the Holocaust. Relating these two documented events that firstly went to super vague to very clear, states that the reason why Pius XII wanted his speech to be unclear towards his audience is so that the Nazis wouldn't have targeted him, as he never showed arrogance towards the Jews and the Nazis; but lived in fear to see if he was targeted next. • 9. Essay on The Liturgy of Humiliation The 18th century was an incredibly different time, full of corruption and brutality. New France is a great example of just how brutal this time period was and Peter Moogk's "The Liturgy of Humiliation, Pain and Death: The Execution of Criminals in New France," is an article that puts the justice system of New France under a proverbial microscope, analyzing execution and humiliation techniques used by the government and the Church. It tries to emphasize the influence that religion and the crown had on criminalization techniques used in New France and just how much control they obtained through the fear produced by public executions. The man's neck is then clasped by the grotesque hands of the executioner and he is throttled back and forth as his last breaths are forced from his body (Moogk, Peter, The liturgy of Humiliation, Pain and Death: Execution of Criminals in New France, pg. 98.) This is definitely a deterrent for anyone else to ever even think of attempting a similar crime. Even if a deceased man is convicted for a crime his cadaver and his memory must accept the corresponding punishment. Sergeant Henri Begard of Quebec City was involved in a duel and was found dead on the street in January of 1698. Although He was deceased, Moogk explains that he was found guilty for starting the duel that led to his own death. The body was to be dragged by a hurdle, face down through the streets of Quebec City. All of his worldly possessions were confiscated by the crown and his memory defamed for eternity (Moogk, pg. 97.) These stories were just a few examples of the excellent situations presented by Moogk and just how well the words create a visual aid, making the article have that much more of an impact on the reader, as well as help to promote the argument that is presented. One of Moogk's main focuses of the article seems to be the idea that, contrary to popular belief, the church and religion in general provided an immense amount of influence on the perception of crime and how ... • 10. My Catholic Church Experience Paper On April 11th, 2017, I attended mass in the Blessed Edmund Chapel. Unlike other weekday masses, this one was scheduled at 7 AM because of it being Holy Tuesday. Never having been to a Catholic mass before, all of this was a new experience. Growing up in a non–denominational Christian household, I did not have a clue what to expect. From this experience, I was able to gain insight into the Catholic practices and how they conduct their masses. It also helped to expand on the teachings we discussed in religion class. When you first walked into the Blessed Edmund Rice Chapel, you see chairs lined up in front of the altar and podium. Underneath a majority of the chairs, lay a bible to follow along with the sermon of the mass. In front, in front of the altar, there were two candles that a Brother lit during the mass. Even though the chapel being small might seem like a disadvantage, I thought that this feature offered a more personal and close experience. Up on the altar, in between the candles, there was a wooden figure of Jesus on the cross. It was in a way similar to churches I have attended before, except there was no altar or podium, and was ... Every symbol in the Greek Orthodox Church is directly related to that which "sacred value and transforming power." For example, during our visit to the church, we noticed that the main sanctuary was clearly divided into three sections by a wall with images of saints and icons, which is known as the iconostasis. I learned that the three different sections are the narthex, the nave, and the altar. Upon further research, the iconostasis symbolizes the link between heaven and Earth, the gate which we will one day be able to cross. There are typically paintings of saints and icons on the iconostasis, which that also holds meaning for the church goers. Because this area is typically not accessible by the church goes, it provides a clear indication for what we should strive for: to someday access heaven. Thus, this corresponds to one of the types of theodicies that Livingston presents. Greek Orthodox believe in an other–worldly theodicy. Liturgy of Saint Denis and Companions Part 1 Liturgy of Saint Denis and Companions October 9 is the celebration day of the feast of St. Denis and his companions, Rusticus the priest and Eleutherius the deacon, who were both martyred alongside and buried with him. Veneration of St. Denis and his companions began shortly after his death and added to the Roman calendar in 1568 by Pius V, even though it had already been celebrated regularly since about the year 800 AD. In traditional Catholic practice, Denis is invoked against diabolical possession and issues of head pain, the obvious allusion to his beheading. (St. Denis and Companions, 2012). In the Middle Ages many wore bright colors, some encrusted with jewels during the Feast of St. Denis, particularly in those cathedrals named after him. This was to signify the movement into a world of light and comfort based on suffering on earth (Levy, ed., p. 354). Feasts of the saints arose from the early Christian customs of both commemorating their death and their rebirth into heaven. The readings for the feast of St. Denis include material from Paul's second letter to the Corinthians (6: 4–10) in which Paul emphasizes that humans are servants of God in all ways. It is through endurance in hardships, imprisonments, hunger, and hate that the Holy Spirit enters into us and helps us understand that there is a greater plan. In the Second Vatican Council, the fathers produced the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, which was their first work. This Constitution was entitled Sacrosanctum Concilium (1963). In the Constitution, the fathers described the use of liturgy as vital in Catholic life, thus calling for liturgical reform. In the West, The desire to reserve the completion of Baptism to the Bishop caused a separation between the two sacraments. He can do so only with the approval of the Bishop. Being called to love can be summed up by Jesus's words in Matthew 22:37–40, when he says, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." My understanding of how to love God and love my neighbor has certainly been shaped by the material in this course thus far, especially by the consistent prayerful attitude discussed in Liturgy of the Ordinary. By implementing spiritual disciplines such as lectio divina and close reading, I have been able to center myself on this prayerful attitude and more effectively live out my call to love God and others. Through Tish Harrison Warren's Liturgy of the Ordinary, I have gained a greater understanding of what being called to love means, and I have learned multiple practical means by which I can live out my call to love. Harrison Warren illustrates the idea that our call to love is not one that is to be separated from the mundane tasks of our daily lives; on the contrary, our call to love is to be embraced in the midst of and through these mundane tasks. Throughout the first few chapters of the book, the main idea has been to love God more deeply by having an attitude of prayerfulness, which one could certainly consider a spiritual discipline. Psalm 121 seems to speak of the tough times in our lives and how we can still find peace. God does not live in some celestial tower, far away from the world God created. God cares for all the people and all of creation. God cares for us amidst all the twists and turns of life's journey. It is that conviction which inspires Psalm 121, a Psalm I read again to Cindy in the last week of her life. Psalm 121 is sometimes called „the traveler‟s Psalm‟. It was a psalm sung by pilgrims as they made their annual journey to Jerusalem. It expressed their faith in God, but also reflected the unease they felt about travel. "I look to the mountains; where will my help come from?" (v.1). Mountains may be beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. Mountains are places where people lose their lives. No, the hills are not the place from which our help comes – rather they are the place where help is needed. Here in this Psalm, the hills or mountains represented the perils of the journey, for it was in the ravines and gorges of the mountain ranges that wild beasts and robbers hid. As the pilgrims looked to the mountain ranges they had to cross if they were to reach Jerusalem, they were filled with foreboding and wondered from where their help would come. I liked this video on worship because it helped get my mind in the right mindset that I needed to be in for worship. Then the worship band came up and began the service very smooth. There were a lot of lights directed at the band, and as we began worship it reminded me of what the beginning of a concert would look like. In class we talked about how we do not worship to be a show, but an acceptance of the invitation God has given us to worship Him. While worship began, the thought of this conversation popped in my head as the lights started to flash transitioning into the next song. As worship progressed, we continued singing more and more upbeat songs that were mostly about the Spirit, and people started to respond more and more emotionally. I was able to personally worship as freely as I wanted to, but the lights again started to actually distract me from truly worshipping. It was very moving though to see people responding to the Holy Spirit by kneeling, praying, and raising hands. The worship leader was also very expressive of his emotions during the service. This occurrence also made me think ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. The Importance Of The Symbol System Of The Msm Liturgy On... 1.0 Introduction Ritual can be defined as a religious or solemn ceremony which is made up of a sequence of actions performed in order to achieve a particular outcome. The purpose of this ethnographic report is to examine the effectiveness of the symbol system of the MSM liturgy in terms of the ritual purpose and the extent of the reflection on Christian stories and beliefs of the Easter Triduum. This case study aims to analyse the level of engagement and understanding in the community of the symbol system represented in the MSM liturgy in terms of the Easter Triduum by surveying students and conducting an interview. The symbol system of the MSM liturgy on Holy Thursday was highly effective in engaging the community in a reflection on the Easter Story when the participants came with prior knowledge, as this offered a better understanding and insight to the liturgy which made it easier to follow. The contemporary symbols were engaging and effectively communicated the Easter Story to the whole community, whereas the traditional elements were ineffective in engaging the majority of the members. 2.0 Method of Inquiry 2.1 Primary Data Primary data was data collected and is evident throughout the report in the form of student surveys (Refer to appendix 1), teacher interviews (Refer to appendix 2), Ms Terrey's address as well as photos and the order of service which was gathered from the liturgy and booklet. All the primary sources provided insider perspective into the liturgy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Thomas More Catholic Community Analysis St. Thomas More Catholic Community uses a variety of components that encompasses their musical experience during Mass. First, I want to note that the liturgy uses non–linguistic sounds in addition to speech like organs, pianos, hand bells, bell tree chimes for processions and sanctuary bells (Director of Liturgy, Worship & Music). Furthermore, music is an essential element of the liturgy – it is "normative to Sunday worship (Director of Liturgy, Worship & Music). It is typical for a Sunday Mass to begin with the Gathering song that opens worship that is sung by the choir and the assembly to unite in prayer. In complement to it, Mass ends with the Closing song sung by the choir and calls the assembly to unite as it moves out into the world to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the prayers are committed to memory and occur without change throughout the liturgical year – this includes both spoken and sung responses. In the case of the Responsorial Psalm, the cantor presents the refrain and the assembly repeats it (Director of Liturgy, Worship & Music). Even during communion, it is typical for a familiar song refrain to be sung by the parish as they process in the communion line. The cantor and choir will sing the verses and the assembly joins in on the simple refrain, so it is easily committed to memory through repetition and singing (Hoden, "Christian Music Before the Reformation" 13). • 30. The Development Of Catholic Worship The development of Catholic understanding is expressed through Cristian doctrines and features of Catholic communal life. Catholic Christianity raises and attempts to answer questions of ultimate meaning and value through "rule of faith" and Catholic worship. Sacraments are a part of Catholic worship as they are involved in the liturgical life within church. The rule of faith is a community's measurement of someone's faith. The kerygma is six discourses that are referred to as "proclamation" and summarize Christian faith (125). Some of the ultimate meaning and value questions include: what is the ultimate meaning of Jesus Christ; what is the ultimate meaning behind baptism; and how is the liturgy a part of Catholic value these questions will be answered through information provided in Cunningham's text. Firstly, belief in Jesus Christ is a major part of Catholicism. Throughout time, there's been much discussion about whether or not Jesus was a human. There was much suspicion about the bread and wine actually being Christ's body and blood. In chapter 5, Catholic Worship, it was explained that "Catholics believe that the coming of Jesus Christ, who was the Word of flesh" was a great sacrament (101). Christ was considered to being a great sacrament because he was the visible sign of God's presence which symbolized God's love for Earth. Christ should be considered God made man. The Holy Eucharist is a sacrament that is related to the center of Christian life. The Eucharist is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Race, Gender, And Women During the time I observed Mass there was a dominate race in attendance–mostly Caucasian (around 200) with several Hispanics (around 50) and very few African Americans (only three); however, there was not a dominate sex or age of the attendees. There seemed to be an equal amount of males and females, and a vast degree of age–newborns to very elderly among the participants. The clothing of the participants was very formal and respectful. Most women either wore long dresses or skirt with leggings or tights underneath, some women wore pants; however, there was only a few women in pants; all women wore shirts that did not show very much (if any) cleavage–some women (around ten) wore black, white, gray, or brown veils over their heads–at first I believed that the veils were a sign that the women wearing them were preparing to become nuns; however, several small children were wearing the veils over their heads, and according to Lauren, the veils are symbolic– they show respect to the Saints and God by allowing women to observe submissiveness and obedience. There seems to be no correlation between the veils color and a symbolic meaning behind the veil color. Men wore suits or khakis and a button up shirt. Women and men were all aware that they were in a church and must be modest–not shorts or t–shirts or cocktail dresses were seen of the participants–if someone was to show up to Mass in this attire it would be deemed inappropriate. Even the priest and altar servers and choir member ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Council Of Vatican II The council of Vatican II was called in 1959 in order to reform the canon law of the Catholic Church. It was suggested by many that the council focus their energies on reforming liturgical worship. Joseph Ratzinger, a priest and future pope, used his lecture, "The First Session", in order to portray what was going on at the council and to give his own views. Ratzinger started by identifying the fact that the opening ceremonies to the council were very long and hard to keep up with, thus discouraging involvement in the ceremonies altogether. This was representative of what was happening to liturgical worship–there was decreased participation. In order to remedy the immense decrease in participation in Catholic liturgy, the council proposed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The document advocated for a return to ancient origins of liturgy, as well as the removal of historical attachments in order to maintain the "Noble Simplicity". By reforming these aspects, the ritual of liturgical worship became simpler, and because the ritual was simpler, more people had the capacity and energy to participate in the ritual. Additionally, the document called for the liturgy to become more dialogic. By making the Mass like a conversation between the priest and the people attending the liturgical worship, it actively and directly engages them more, causing a boost in participation. Another issue that the document dealt with was the issue of governance, and the result was that the document allowed for the dioceses to have control over their churches' liturgical rituals. Because of this, rituals could be formatted to match the churches' cultures and environments, and this would foster more participation in the liturgy, because more people were able to relate to it and were more eager to participate. Finally, the issue of language was also dealt with by the document. Churches around the world would now be able to celebrate Mass using the vernacular. This benefitted liturgies everywhere because more people were able to actually understand and participate in the Mass, thus increasing full and active engagement in the liturgical celebrations. Because of the Sancrosanctum Concilium, the first document of the Second Vatican Council, the liturgy of the Catholic Church was reformed in a way in which the liturgy would foster full, conscious, and active participation among all ... • 34. Analysis Of Paul Basden 's ' A Congenial Way ' Paul Basden begins his conversation on worship by seeking to define its meaning. However, the reader will learn quickly that this task is easier said than done. Basden examines worship through theological, biblical, and historical facets and ultimately determines that "Worship has never been practiced in all places by all people in one way (18). In order to discuss the various types of worship in a congenial way, Basden introduces six authors that are charged with defending and critique each other's methods. First, Paul Zahl defines and defends the practice of formal–liturgical worship. For Zahl, formal– liturgical worship is first and foremost vertical worship. Best acknowledges that often in "worship skirmishes" what divides is not what is important, namely truth, but instead what is temporal, namely music style. For Best, the most effective way to worship is to rely upon the historical truth preserved in the hymn book. In Chapter 3, Joe Horness sets forth an argument for contemporary music–driven worship. This style of worship has an emphasis on relationship. Horness seeks to set forth the true goal of contemporary worship. It is not just about the instrumentation; instead it focuses on the communication. Horness takes the reader personally through his journey from traditional worship to contemporary worship, including his experience with Willow Creek Church. In his chapter, Horness promotes an emphasis on connecting: connecting unbelievers with believers and ultimately, connecting all people with God. He states, "People of this generation are longing to experience the genuine presence of God. And God is longing to move in and among the hearts of his people. If we will learn to worship from hearts that are fully engaged, God will be glorified and set free to move in us and among us (104)." Horness ends his chapter with some brief warnings for those involved in the contemporary worship. He then encourages all worshipers to seek above all to bring their best to God ... • 35. Summary Of The 124th Psalm Introduction In the 124th Psalm, voice is given to a beautiful question about the tragic reality that would have been theirs if their "help" had come from anyone but the LORD. The "what if?" question is worth asking, and numerous moments recorded in the Hebrew Bible speak of times of strife where, in the end, "God comes through." Dr. Toni Craven describes the whole of the Psalms as "a self–contained religious library of prayer in that it incorporates an enormously wide spectrum of issues and reflects various historical backgrounds.[footnoteRef:0]" The echoes of those moments in the narratives of the Hebrew Bible are heard behind the words of Psalm 124. Fortunately, the utter destruction the 124th Psalm alludes to doesn't come to fruition. In spite of the power wielded by their enemies, power that is as consuming as the appetite of a devouring monster and as uncontrollably destructive as a flash flood raging, and even though the ones who are against the people of God possess a grasp that is as sure and as strong as a hunter's well–set snare, those mortals cannot overcome the ones the LORD chooses to defend. Instead, their rescue from that trouble receives the emphasis and is celebrated as the salvific, liberating work of God. Claus Westermann aptly describes Psalm 124 thusly: "Psalm 124 is able to transport us into the hour in which Israel looked back upon a rescue from grave trouble and summed up this experience of deliverance in language of relived praise, understandable ... • 36. Liturgy Experience Paper I attended the liturgy at Faithful Savior Lutheran Church located in Southeast Portland on the weekend before Spring Break (3/13/2016). I went to the Lutheran Church with my parent, who came there as a guest speaker after the liturgy. I experienced a different but similar way of worship service, since they are quite different from each other in the concept of communion but very similar in general structures. The service begins at 10:30 every Sunday morning. I was told that they would only do liturgical communion on the first and third Sunday of the month. The architecture of the church gives me the impression that it is alike the Catholic Church. The church features the typical Catholic Church structure: Square building made of red bricks, triangular roof with a cross on top. It has three doors though the main entrance is the only one open. We arrived there on time, and there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They had purple clothes with white cross on each side of the aisle as well as the altar. I was surprised that I did not see any candles or sculptures during the communion. The priest did all the readings on the powerpoint instead of the scripture. Because the church was much smaller than Catholic churches, the music was more effective and shocking, though they did not have any pianos or guitars. I found the choir later on the second floor. There was a lot of singing throughout the service, and usually people sang with the choir. During the congregation, I found that most people were in a group of much older age, and they were all friendly and faithful. The sermon was similar to the Catholic ones, for the priest talked about grace, sins, and resurrection. However, it seemed that they did not believe the power of confession. Communion was offered afterwards, and they were willing to let visitors receive blessings. Food and coffee was even provided after the service, and we had a great time chatting with people ... • 37. Psalm 60 Analysis Anderson's paper is written to discuss the possible dating of Psalm 60 based on the way one would read and analyze it. His main point is to warn against trying to date the psalms without adequate support; many different scholars are used by Anderson to prove his point that dating is hard to do when you do not have enough information. However, he incorporated the LXX and MT as well as other psalms to solidify his claim for the date he gave the psalm. Anderson gives the reader a form– critical analysis, historical–critical analysis of the oracle and the complaint, and gives a text–critical analysis before trying to date the psalm himself. The article begins with Anderson stating the current, popular view that has been used to date psalm 60, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his work, Anderson stresses that dating a psalm is not an easy task, but he made an honest and well thought out attempt at dating the psalm. Therefore, I believe that overall the text is a good example for other scholars to use to try and date other psalms as well as understand the process of knowing the culture of the Bible even more for a more thorough appreciation for what the text is conveying about God and his ... • 38. The Meaning Of Liturgy In Here Be The Dragons By Michael... The meaning of liturgy may not be debatable but how that definition functions becomes contestable as it is performed in different settings. Thus, when interpreting a liturgical theology, it would figure, that the same notion would apply. Joyce Zimmerman writes, "...Who interprets liturgy? Is the realization that the practice of liturgy involves a number of competencies at a number of levels." Liturgy by its nature is not static there by constitutes a multileveled evaluation and approach when interpreting. There are no set parameters or guidelines that designate the functional aspects of the liturgy. Liturgy has the potential to take on any form it desires in order to accomplish the objective of moving people to discourse. Liturgy has this Michael Jackson appeal. It has the ability to conform to certain parameters when needed but always functioning within itself to meet its on transcendent perspective. Like Michael Jackson, liturgy can masks itself in a litany of otherness in order to make itself more appealing to others in order to further the discourse. James Baldwin highlights Michael's chameleon like abilities in Here be the Dragons, The Michael Jackson cacophony is fascinating in that it is not about Jackson at all. I hope he has the good sense to know it and the good fortune to snatch his life out of the jaws of a carnivorous success. • 39. Worship Analysis : The Baptist Church Worship Analysis #2 For my second analysis, I went to a church in my hometown of Paris, Texas called Freedom Church. This church is a new non–denominational church that is trying to reach to the "de–churched and unchurched" as their tag line says. They have only been operational now for less than a year, so they are still trying to get new people to join their church. For this reason, this past Friday they put on a huge Easter event for kids and adults that had games, dinner, and a worship service. I saw and experienced some aspects of what non–denominational believe or practice, but also noticed that they had some Baptist influence in their service. Though they did some things different, I found throughout the service there were some similarities to the Baptist church I attended. There were also many things that happened throughout the service that I noticed are things that we talked about in class that I found they were successful in accomplishing or they failed at. First off, the evening started off with a dinner and an Easter egg hunt for the kids. While eating dinner many of the people from the church were very inviting and kind. They introduced themselves to me and asked me questions about how I was and things like that. There were some of the staff that were more stand offish then the other people were. Overall though, the people and atmosphere of the church was very inviting and joyful which gave me a great first impression. We then moved into the sanctuary that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
