The Legacy Of Rhode Island
Vincent "Buddy" Cianci was born April thirtieth, 1941 . His career was fraught with conspiracy and
crime, but he is still considered to be one of the most beloved political figures in Providence, Rhode
Island's colorful history. He earned his first term as mayor at age thirty–three, in 1975. He would
serve six terms as mayor over the course of three decades. Buddy died just last year, January
twenty–eighth, 2016 after losing a battle with cancer. The city and surrounding towns mourned
together at the loss of an incredibly controversial, but deeply loved political leader. His six terms
made him one of the longest running mayors in United States history. Cianci's loved Providence so
deeply that in trying to help, he shaved away at his honest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Providence was no longer the bustling hub that it used to be. The city never really recovered, it now
houses many of the lower middle class and minority communities. This type of implosions is
sometimes referred to as white flight, the white middle and upper class fled the city leaving the
lower classes to live in dissolving, disheveled neighborhoods . The Italian neighborhood, Federal
Hill, fell under the control of organized crime during this weakened economic window, this would
remain a prominent authority in Providence until the late 1990s. Today the tendrils of mobster
influence still can be seen but in a lesser degree than in the 1970s.
Politically, Providence was always a bit corrupted. It ran on a patronage system where a person
would scavenge and promote democratic voting and in return, the democrats would give the person
who gathered the votes a government job . This continued well into the twentieth century despite the
Pendleton Act of 1883 which stated that government jobs should be awarded based on the potential
employee's merit rather than their political affiliations or connection . The politics were not clean, it
was run by the Democratic machine which kept the city spiraling down by putting the same
ineffective politicians in charge.

Gentrification and White Preference in the Rhode Island...
The loss of public housing and the expanse of the wealth gap throughout the state of Rhode Island
has been a rising issue between the critics and supporters of gentrification, in both urban areas such
as Providence and wealthy areas such as the island of Newport, among other examples. With the
cities under a monopoly headed by the wealth of each neighborhood, one is left to wonder how such
a system is fair to all groups. Relatively speaking, it isn't, and the only ones who benefit from such a
system are white–skinned. With the deterioration of the economic status of Rhode Island, and
especially in the city of Providence, more and more educated Caucasians are leaving to seek a more
fertile economic environment.
"Gentrification is a general ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, many cities that are rich in culture, diversity, and vitality are beacons for white people
interested in the "upcoming scene." This brings more and more whites who displace and marginalize
the original residents through increasing prices. Cities such as New York, Boston, and San Francisco
all have neighborhoods that originally had mostly poor, uneducated African Americans, and now are
swelling with young, educated whites that have greatly increased the price of living. In Boston,
Charlestown, Jamaica Plains, and Beacon Hill have all experienced intense characteristics of
gentrification from the 1970s up until the present, showcasing an increase in the population with at
least a bachelor's degree, as well as a large increase in new and renovated buildings. In New York,
the most famous example of gentrification is in Harlem, has undergone a process of gentrification
after becoming known as the national, and even international symbol for black culture with a
vibrancy that is not seen in the suburbs. Finally, in San Francisco, in the bay area, there has been a
massive influx of affluent companies that have completely devastated the middle class due to a high
rise in wealthy, educated, employees. These employees have taken residence up in the bay area,
causing the entirety of the already previously gentrified neighborhood to skyrocket to unobtainable
prices, even for the

Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson
From the violent and brutal clash between Indians [1], and British colonists in Massachusetts during
King Philip's War (1675–6) grew a new literary genre. After their redemption, some colonists who
had been prisoners of the Indians wrote autobiographical accounts of their experiences. These
captivity narratives developed a large audience, and interest in the narratives continued into the
nineteenth century.[2] After her capture and redemption, Mary Rowlandson published what some
historians call "America's first best seller," entitled Narrative Of the Captivity and Restoratio;t of

the Puritans had a duty tc) fulfill their covenant with God bv serving as an example of an ideal
Christian community to the world. In return, God would protect his chosen people. In "God's
Promise to His Plantations," John Cotton, one of Winthrop's contemporaries, explained that "what

urged Puritans to "Have speciall care that you have had the ordinances [of God] planted amongst

his fellow Puritans that breaking the covenant with God would result in a loss of his protection for
his chosen.
By quoting the scriptural story of Joseph, Rowlaridson illustrated her belief that the Puritans were
the chosen people of God. When pondering the timely attack of the Indians on Lancaster, which
took place shortly after the troops protecting the town left for want of provisions, she wrote that God
"orders all things for his holy ends":
Shall there be evil in the city find the Lord hath not done it? They are not grieved for the affliction
of Joseph; there fore they shall go captive with the first that go captive. It is Lord's doing and it
should be marvelous in our eyes.[8]

Comparing The Black Cat And Masque Of Red Death
Edgar Allan Poe was a writer born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. Poe had a tragic
childhood losing both parents before the age of three. Poe is popular in American literature and
international for his horror genre. Poe left a huge impact in literature he helped develop the common
short stories we have today. Kenny Gerald states ,"Poe was yet the first important American writer
to foreground violence..." Growing up he faced many challenges and lived in poverty for a period of
time. When his works finally started getting attention he tried to get better pay. Poe wrote stories
about alcoholism and depression which is ironic because in reality he was facing the same situation.

His death was like a page out of his own short story, mysterious and dark. "In 'The Black Cat' and
'Masque of Red Death'," Poe uses characterization to develop of a theme where the main characters
descent into madness. My essay will compare and contrast these two stories using characterization.
This also ties to the theme because both main characters go mad because of their decisions and
actions. They lead themselves to their own destruction.
The Black Cat starts off as the narrator writing in his jail cell waiting for his scheduled hanging. He
is unnamed and contradicts himself from the start stating he isn't mad , although he knows the
terrible things he has done to his pets and wife. The narrator explains how he went from a normal
person into a murderer awaiting his death. I will go in more detail explaining how the narrator's
decisions and way of life drive him to madness. The Black Cat narrator explains since he was young
he loved animals. He also married young with a women who loved animals just like him. He owned
a black cat named Pluto which he describes as, "was favorite pet and playmate"(Poe paragraph 5).
From this we can see the narrator is very passionate about animals and has a kind heart. The narrator
starts drinking and compares

The Story of Jia Sheng: Coming to America
From the early year of his life as a undergraduate student in China, Jia Sheng dreamed of going to
America for his advanced education. When he graduated from Liaoning University, he was accepted
by Brown University as a graduate student. He thought this was a great oppotunity for his life.
Journey from China to America
Jia Sheng had a long journey from his hometown Shenyang in Northeast China to Providence Rhode
Island in the United States in the fall of 1983. It took him over 14 hours by train from Shenyang to
Beijing. When he said goodbye to his father, mother, and his brother in the train station, he felt very
sad because this was the first time he left home for such long journey. He did not know when he was
able to see them again.
When he was on board of an ariplane in the Beijing airport on August 23, he was very excited
because this was his first time to take airplane in his life. Beijng airport then was not very big. There
were only a few airplanes there. There was no direct flight from Beijing to JFK in New York city 30
years ago. The airplane had to stop at least three times for gasline and check ups.
The first stop was Shanghai airport for two hours. More passages were on board. When the plane
took out again, there were tears in Jia's eye because he knew this time he had to said goodbye to
China. After over 10 hours flight, the airplane landed again at Anchorage airport in Alaska. It was
very dark outside. He did not have a chance to see much about

John Calvin on God's Divine Providence Essay
John Calvin on God's Divine Providence
In John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion he spends a great deal of time expounding his
doctrine of God's Divine providence in all of creation. He explains not only how God continually
governs the laws of nature, but also how God governs man's actions and intentions to bring about
His own Divine Will. Calvin believes that God's providence is so encompassing in creation that
even a man's own actions, in many ways, are decreed by God. Because of this belief there arises the
question, "Does Calvin leave room for the free will of man?" At the outset I must make clear that
Calvin defines Providence as this: "providence means not that by which God idly observes from
heaven what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believes that God's act of creation did not stop after He created man, but continues all throughout
the past, present and future. Calvin not only believes that God cares for all of man and animals, but
directs the weather and excersises His power over inanimate objects. Calvin even goes so far as to
argue that the movement of the sun, moon, stars, and planets is continued by God's power and not
by some energy that was given to them at the beginning of creation, which "carnal sense" would tell
us (Calvin 197). He does not believe that God sits back and watches or allows things in nature to
happen, but actually causes them to happen. For example, if there was a drought one summer it was
caused by God, possibly part of His vengeance or wrath. Or, if the crops flourished the next summer
it was also His plan. Likewise, let us say per chance (no pun intended) a man is walking along a
mountain pass and some rocks fall and kill him. For Calvin this was not an accident, but a
determination and the Will of God. Calvin's ideology of God's Providence in nature is summed up in
this quote:
And truly God claims, and would have us grant him, omnipotence –– not the empty, idle, and almost
unconscious sort that the Sophists imagine, but a watchful, effective, active sort, engaged in
ceaseless activity. Not, indeed, an omnipotence that is only a general principle of confused motion,
as if he were to command a river to flow through its once–appointed channels, but one that

Calvin's Reflection
For this assignment, I have decided to dissect Calvin's writing on the meaning of God's way. God's
ways are something that is often hard for us to comprehend because our finite minds struggle to
understand how an infinite God works. Calvin does a great job building a case for God's ways based
off of what we can observe through our experiences and scriptures. The main purpose for this
section is to show how God works despite of our shortcomings and misunderstandings. It becomes
easy in the issues of life to feel as if God has left us but Calvin makes a case for how God work in
the midst of even those times.
The first argument that is made is that God's providence must be considered with regard to the
future as well as the past. The interesting thing about God is that He lives outside of time. We often
think of things in a linear term because that is how we think but God lives outside of time. This is
why Calvin's first point of Calvin's point is one that is important. If God lives outside of time and
has a complete view then He really can work all things together for those that follow Him. This
means that even though I may be going through a rough time now I can be sure that it will out all
work in the end because we know that we serve a faithful God. laid out his understanding of the
nature of providence, Calvin turns to the purpose of the doctrine. However, one should note that just
as he already began to draw these practical effects during his account of the nature of

New England And The Chesapeake Region Before 1700 Essay
New England And The Chesapeake Region Before 1700
Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by the people of
English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. The reasons for this
distinct development were mostly based on the type on people from England who chose to settle in
the two areas, and on the manner in which the areas were settled.
New England was a refuge for religious separatists leaving England, while people who immigrated
to the Chesapeake region had no religious motives. As a result, New England formed a much more
religious society then the Chesapeake region. John Winthrop states that their goal was to form "a
city upon a hill", which represented a "pure" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Wage and Price Regulations in Connecticut is an example of common laws being justified by
the bible. Also in this document the word "community " is emphasized, just as Winthrop emphasizes
it saying: "we must be knit together in this work as one man". The immigrants to New England
formed very family and religiously oriented communities. Looking at the emigrant lists of people
bound for New England it is easy to observe that most people came in large families, and large
families support the community atmosphere. There were many children among the emigrants, and
those children were taught religion from their early childhood, and therefore grew up loyal to the
church, and easily controllable by the same. Any deviants from the regime were silenced or
persecuted before they could start any movements that would be a threat to the authority of the
church. Even people like Ann Hutchinson and Roger Williams, who only slightly deviated from the
teaching of the Puritan church were expelled and forced to move to Rode Island. As a result of this
tight religious control the society became very conservative in New England, and life evolved to be
simple and not elaborate as in Virginia.
In the Chesapeake region almost everything was exactly opposite of New England. The immigrants
were not idealists, but materialists, most of whom sought money. As John Smith mentions in his
History of Virginia, many

period to me was the explorers because without them we wouldn't have some of the things we have

In addition, the opposition cites evidence from "Edward Jenner (English Surgeon), a text/lecture by
Lester S. King. The author maintains that "Jenner concluded that cowpox not only protected against

On July 1 Jenner inoculated the boy again, this time with smallpox matter. No disease developed;

James Albert Gronniosaw, An African Prince
"I cannot but admire the footsteps of Providence; astonished that I should be so wonderfully
preserved", remarked James Albert Gronniosaw as he recounts his life experiences in A Narrative of
the Most Remarkable Particulars in the Life of James Albert Ukawsaw Gronniosaw, an African
Prince (Gronniosaw 28). The footsteps of Providence that Gronniosaw mentions in the quote above
refer to God's guidance of human destiny and his intervention in the world. The significance of
exploring the role of providence in Gronniosaw's life is that it gives the reader further insight into
Gronniosaw's perspective on the events of his life, which he believes are not caused by chance but
rather the providence of God. In the narrative of James Albert Gronniosaw, providence influences
the actions of men, administers vengeance, and serves as a source of guidance. Each of these roles
of providence help to preserve Gronniosaw through various trials and tribulations that he endures in
his life. The first role of providence that appears in the narrative is to influence the actions of men
toward Gronniosaw. For example, when Gronniosaw was brought to the Gold Coast, the King of the
land intended to kill him because the King perceived Gronniosaw, the grandson of a rival king, to be
a spy. Though Gronniosaw was deeply troubled by this threat of death, he was convinced that God
would work miracles on his behalf. Accordingly, the providence of God granted Gronniosaw favor

Personally, I would characterize the roles of women in the seventeenth century New England based
on Rowlandson's narrative as sub servant to men. Men in this society were the head of their
households, pillars in the community and leaders in the church. There were a few women for
example, Anne Hutchinson who tried to speak out publicly. The fact that that she was a women
declaring her spiritual authority in a public setting made her even more dangerous in the eyes of
Massachusetts authorities. Therefore, she and her closest adherents were banished from the colony,
with most, including Hutchinson herself, moving to the more tolerant Rhode Island. (Pg 9) This is

My Vacation To The Bahamas : My Trip To Bahamas, Bahamas
My Vacation to Nassau, Bahamas
When I was in eighth grade I went on my first trip out of the country to Nassau, Bahamas. Going on
this trip was one of the most exciting and unforgettable times of my life. Not only was it a fun
experience, it was also the first time I realized that I love traveling. While there I was lucky enough
to visit many places, such as Blue Lagoon Island and the beautiful Atlantis Resort, and immerse
myself in the Bahamian culture. My time in The Bahamas was not my only great memory from that
trip. The journey to get to The Bahamas itself was also quite interesting.
There was only one week before I left for my trip to the Bahamas. My dad had already booked our
trip and he told me we were staying in the little hotel across the street from the Atlantis Resort in
Nassau, Bahamas. To be honest I was pretty upset about it. Although before leaving for our vacation
I was given the great news from my dad that we were not staying at the hotel across from the resort
and we were actually staying at the huge Atlantis Royal Towers section of the Atlantis Resort with a
great view. This news had completely brightened my day. Two days after finding out the fantastic
news we left for the airport at around three o'clock in the morning. We flew out of O'Hare
International Airport so we had to ride on a tram to get the airport where something happened that,
to me, is rather coincidental. Since it was only three in the morning there was no one on the tram
except for my parents and I, along with a young couple. Once we got off the tram we made our way
to the gate for our flight to Miami, Florida to board the connecting flight to Nassau. When we got on
the plane we recognized the people in our row as the same young couple we saw on the tram earlier
in the morning! After landing and making our way to the connecting flight we noticed that the
young couple from the flight was going to the Bahamas as well. I just thought that the encounter
was a pretty interesting coincidence and is something that I will probably remember for quite a
while.
After experiencing the memorable and somewhat coincidental journey to the Bahamas we decided
to take a boat from Nassau to Blue Lagoon Island. I would describe Blue Lagoon

Rear Window Effectively And Heavily Implements All Four...
The film Rear Window effectively and heavily implements all four aspects of mise–en–scene in
order to create themes that can easily be understood and broken down by and for its' viewers. Sound
and lack thereof is also used successfully especially in scenes where conversations cannot be made
out either because music is used to deafen the audience or simply because the conversations are seen
from Jeff's perspective in which case he is simply too far away to hear anything. The primary setting
of Rear Window as well as the important costumes and props that are present in this film are what
allow this film to flow so well. Character movements and performances in Rear Window leave
viewers with enigmas as well as reveal motifs that will be constantly seen or mentioned throughout
the film. Lighting and sound are certainly key as they add to the suspense of Rear Window and offer
even more enigmas. Normally too much of something is never a good thing, but the heavy use of
mise–en–scene in Rear Window makes the styles of the film very strong. The primary setting of
Rear Window which takes place in the apartment of L.B. Jefferies reveals an interesting and
reoccurring motif. This motif is that Jeff is this "all seeing eye," but beyond that, there is nothing
else. It's the idea that he has this great source of power, but he cannot act on it. Jeff, as well as the
audience seemingly have the perfect view as we see all the events that occur in the apartment
complex across from Jeff's

Contextual Theory Application Essay
Today's society contributes to one's successes and failures as a result of the individual's
characteristics and ignorance of his or her surroundings. However, a novel, and overlooked
sociological concept, contextual explanation, provides a solution for this oversight. More
specifically, contextual explanation states members of society should examine beyond an
individual's traits like motivation and determination, and rather, into one's environment and how it
environment has attributed to their success or failure. For instance, investigating an individual's
family income, secondary education institutions attended, emotional support, and resources
provided in their native towns. One of my great inspirations, passions, and preoccupations is

Plymouth Rock. He uses his belief of Divine Providence to make God a part of the story, by giving
him credit for all that happens, and making the Lord a part of everything in his life, because to
Bradford, He is. This usage can be well explained in one of the first events of the excerpt. Bradford
tells of a young seaman who condemned and cursed the poor, because of their illnesses. The seaman
told the poor he hoped to cast them into the sea before they reached land. The man contracted a
painful disease and was the first to be thrown overboard, which Bradford claimed was a punishment

School Providence Analysis
Knowing what type of school Providence was academically made Jake decide that this was the right
fit for him. Jake had already known about Providence beforehand because his aunt was a graduate of
Providence College and was able to help Jake out in the decision making of choosing a college and
Providence specifically. When he toured Providence, he saw that this was the atmosphere that he
would like to live in for the next 4 years. From what Jake has heard and what he has seen,
Providence is very tough academically. He wants to be challenged so that he can improve. He has
also learned from his short time here that the teachers, just like at St. John's, care for their students

Facts In The Case Of M. Valdemar, And Pickman's Model
Darkness surfaces as a cast of its own. The difference between love and darkness is a very thin line.
At some points, a person may not realize they are teetering between one and the other. Danger can
be intertwined throughout one's journey in finding love. It leads to darkness in varying degrees.
Edgar Allen Poe's, "William Wilson" and "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar," and H.P.
Lovecraft's, "The Outsider" and "Pickman's Model" were written in the 19th and 20th centuries.
During these time periods, these men may have been considered reclusive, but are best known for

nature. He lived in a lonely castle and had no friends. He went looking for adventure and decided to
see what lied on the other side of a church (love) and a graveyard (darkness). The narrator is
yearning for human contact. A feeling of belonging and a sense of love is what he needs to fill the
void in his chest. The Outsider is unaware of his outward appearance. He might be not only yearning
for sunlight, but also to shed some inner light on whom he is. The narrator is plagues by the
memories of his childhood. These are memories of fear and sadness. "Wretched is he who looks

the memories. The narrator does not know where he was born or who his parents were. He knows
that someone took care of him, but cannot remember more than an old worn face. Yearning for love
and acceptance, he struggles with his inner self. "To me there was nothing grotesque in the bones

The Theological Definition Of Providence
There are many subjects in Christendom that are heavily debated. One in particular, is the
providence debate. The theological definition of providence is, "God's governing of the universe.
"God's support, care, and supervision of all creation, from its beginning to all eternity. The terms
comes from Latin providentia, which in turn derives from the verb provideo, "to foresee," but far
more is meant than foresight or foreknowledge." Some evangelicals hold that God's providence is
meticulous: He governs each and every detail. Others hold that it is more general: He controls the
"big picture", but gives humans freedom to make their own choices." There are many scriptures in
the Bible to back up God's providence in the world. However, the word providence is not actually
written in the Bible, but it represents a biblical doctrine. Not only that, "there is no Hebrew
equivalent for "providence," used only of human foresight." Many other issues have to be
considered when speaking on the providence of God. The doctrine of salvation, and the doctrine of
God are theological issues that has to be incorporated in this debate. Will an omniscience,
omnipresent, and omnipotent God create the universe and don't have control over it? According to
the book of Genesis God created everything in six days, and rested on the seventh. Would God
create all of creations, and not care about it? "God's works of providence are his most holy, wise and
powerful preserving and governing

Summary Of Sudden Sea The Great Hurricane Of 1938

29 Nov. 2016
Book Review "Sudden Sea: The Great Hurricane of 1938" by R. A. Scotti was first published in
2003 by Little, Brown and Company in New York City. The novel attempts to recreate the
confusion, chaos, and devastation before, during, and after one of the largest hurricanes to hit New
England. The "Long Island Express," as it was named for its speed and impact location, killed 682
people and had massive implications for the region as a whole particularly, the coastal areas where
its effects were felt the most. The novel draws less on these implications and instead focuses on a
play–by–play of the storm from several perspectives. As such, it ventures from the realm of
nonfiction and towards that of historical fiction. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A. Scotti's book, "Sudden Sea," it is important to look at the novel in the context of its intended
audience. If the novel was intended for an action hungry audience looking for an easy read with just
enough historical context to make it seem real, Scotti has succeeded. If the novel was meant for the
few looking to acquire new and meaningful knowledge about the 1938 hurricane, I believe it has not
delivered in that regard. My goal in reading the book aligned more with the latter of those two
options and so I do not believe the novel to have been worthwhile, but others with different tastes
might argue otherwise. One thing that is clear is that this book has not made a lasting contribution to
its field. That designation should be reserved for pieces with bigger claims and more evidence to

Elizabeth I, Monarch Of England, And Marie De L '...
Elizabeth I, monarch of England, and Marie de l'Incarnation, a French nun, both invoked God and
other forms of religious power to stake their claims to authority. Elizabeth's role as a queen came at
a time when her country was going through political turmoil. Marie's role as a missionary in New
France was to civilize the indigenous people. Although working to better their countries, both of
these writers are vastly different due to their social positions. While Elizabeth had the substantial
task of ruling over her country, Marie was serving her country as a missionary; however, both
writers utilize religion to accomplish their various duties.
Marie utilized her understanding of religion and the Native's understanding of religion to build a
relationship built on trust. She arrived in modern day Quebec in the late 1630's as a missionary from
her country to educate and civilize the Natives there to match European traditions. Marie found
similarities with the indigenous people as even though they didn't have a God, they had their own
forms of worship. In Letter 65 to her son, she answers his questions regarding the "Savages'" beliefs
on divinity. "Certain ones adored the sun and offered its sacrifices. Others had recourse to certain
spirits who they said provided over the woods but all obeyed their dreams as a divinity" (Marie,
368). Even though the Natives did not have any exposure to "the True God" before they met the
Europeans, they still believed in some sort of higher

The Role Of Law In The 17th Century
Throughout the chronology of civilization across our terraqueous globe, there has been one aspect of
society which facilitates our stability. That aspect is our adherence to moral ethics and just laws.
This developed cultural trait has ensured the progression of society and the safety in developing a
complacency to fear or harm. It is law, that protects us from the dangers of ourselves and the
malevolence of others. However, the law has never been indefectible or paradisiac. The laws of man
often reveal their faultiness, and their vulnerability to pervasive interpretation. During the 17th
century, the New World suffered greatly in developing new laws, regulations, and experimental
societal structure. The 17th century contemporary philosophy on community, family, and religion
formed the guidelines in which all societal rules would be formed. ... Show more content on

Is Providence College A Liberal Arts College?
Providence College is a liberal arts college, which consists of roughly four thousand undergraduate
students, located in Providence, Rhode Island. One of the staples of the college has been the ability
to live off–campus on Eaton Street starting in a student's junior year. The attraction stems from most
of the party scene on the weekends being at these houses on the streets bordering the campus.
However, starting in the Fall of 2017, the school is implicating a new policy that juniors are required
to live on campus. While the school is attempting to reduce disturbances in the surrounding
community caused by partying college students, this housing restriction is only going to cause
further issues for Providence College, its students, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, this ideology cannot be a rebuttal from the school as to why students should deal with the
space issue and understand the school's decision to push forward with the new off–campus policy
despite the lack of space.
Fortunately, this issue of on campus space that immediately followed the application selections and
choice to move juniors on campus is not an uncommon problem to have. Other schools' policies that
have developed from the same issue can be utilized or modified to fix the problem at Providence
College. For example, Boston College, a school which we heavily associate with and look to be on
the same level with regarding our academics, has a similar space issue. Demand for on campus
housing is greater than the number of beds the college has, thus students are allowed to live off
campus starting their sophomore year (bc.org). Most students live off campus their junior year and if
they wish to stay on campus all 4 years they must apply for additional housing, which is not
guaranteed. However, if students go off campus sophomore year then they must remain off junior
year as well. While on campus housing was previously granted for all students for all 4 years with
the assumption that some students will live off campus, the looming space issue that is going to
impact students in the fall of 2017, a version of Boston College's policy (let, or make, juniors and
seniors live off campus) should be an

Health Care, Environmental Hazards, And Building Trust...
Step 1: Gather information and identify preliminary issues.
In this case, the most important issues are inadequate access to health care, environmental hazards,
behavioral risk factors, and building trust with the Narragansett community. The first three issues
are important because they directly affect the health of the Native American population.
Additionally, building trust with the Narragansett tribe in order to perform research and
collaborative planning is the key to designing successful care programs specifically for the
Narragansett Indian Tribe. The first key issue is regarding Native Americans' insufficient access to
health care. With the percentage of unemployment within the Native American population in Rhode
Island as high as 26 percent (The Office of Minority Health, 2015), "one–third of Native American
adults said there was a time in the past year when they could not afford to see a doctor" (Parrish,
2012). There is not many people from the tribe can afford health access due to the fact that 42.2
percent of the Native American population is living in poverty (The Office of Minority Health,
2015). Aside from inadequate access to health care, some of the environmental health hazards that
Native Americans are often exposed to include "surface and groundwater pollution, air pollution,
hazardous waste, highway run–off, illegal dumping, lead paint, radon, and biological and chemical
contamination of drinking water" (Parrish, 2012). According to the Environmental

health through the detailed purpose and educated decisions of society, groups, both public and

examines health from a larger prospective. "Influences from sociology on public health indicate the

The Narragansett Tribe : A Tribe Of Native Americans
The Narragansett tribe is a tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area which is now Rhode
Island. They are well known for their interaction with Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island.
The Narragansetts were also part of the historic, King Philip's War. A war in which the natives
fought against the colonists to stop the colonists' advance into America. They were originally
honored by having places in Rhode Island named after them.
Tribe members were very efficient and had came up with a housing system for the changing
seasons. This housing system had the Narragansett changing houses for winter and summer. For the
winter they lived in longhouses. "Up to 20 families would live in" a single longhouse over the
winter, (Early History, Narragansett Indian Tribe). When summer would come along "the tribe
would move to the shore and construct Wigwams or Wetus, temporary shelter made of bark on the
outside and woven mats on the inside,"(Early History, Narragansett Indian Tribe. This housing
system shows how these natives handled the changing seasons in New England.
The Narragansett were resourceful and had their own way of governing. "They survived by farming
corn, hunting, and fishing," (The Narragansett Indian Tribe, A Local Legacy). As for governing, the
explorer Giovanni de Verrazano "described a large Indian population organized under powerful
kings," (The Narragansett Indian Tribe, A Local Legacy). This large indian population is believed to
be the Narragansett.

The Legacy Of Rhode Island

  • 1. The Legacy Of Rhode Island Vincent "Buddy" Cianci was born April thirtieth, 1941 . His career was fraught with conspiracy and crime, but he is still considered to be one of the most beloved political figures in Providence, Rhode Island's colorful history. He earned his first term as mayor at age thirty–three, in 1975. He would serve six terms as mayor over the course of three decades. Buddy died just last year, January twenty–eighth, 2016 after losing a battle with cancer. The city and surrounding towns mourned together at the loss of an incredibly controversial, but deeply loved political leader. His six terms made him one of the longest running mayors in United States history. Cianci's loved Providence so deeply that in trying to help, he shaved away at his honest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Providence was no longer the bustling hub that it used to be. The city never really recovered, it now houses many of the lower middle class and minority communities. This type of implosions is sometimes referred to as white flight, the white middle and upper class fled the city leaving the lower classes to live in dissolving, disheveled neighborhoods . The Italian neighborhood, Federal Hill, fell under the control of organized crime during this weakened economic window, this would remain a prominent authority in Providence until the late 1990s. Today the tendrils of mobster influence still can be seen but in a lesser degree than in the 1970s. Politically, Providence was always a bit corrupted. It ran on a patronage system where a person would scavenge and promote democratic voting and in return, the democrats would give the person who gathered the votes a government job . This continued well into the twentieth century despite the Pendleton Act of 1883 which stated that government jobs should be awarded based on the potential employee's merit rather than their political affiliations or connection . The politics were not clean, it was run by the Democratic machine which kept the city spiraling down by putting the same ineffective politicians in charge. • 5. Gentrification and White Preference in the Rhode Island... The loss of public housing and the expanse of the wealth gap throughout the state of Rhode Island has been a rising issue between the critics and supporters of gentrification, in both urban areas such as Providence and wealthy areas such as the island of Newport, among other examples. With the cities under a monopoly headed by the wealth of each neighborhood, one is left to wonder how such a system is fair to all groups. Relatively speaking, it isn't, and the only ones who benefit from such a system are white–skinned. With the deterioration of the economic status of Rhode Island, and especially in the city of Providence, more and more educated Caucasians are leaving to seek a more fertile economic environment. "Gentrification is a general ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, many cities that are rich in culture, diversity, and vitality are beacons for white people interested in the "upcoming scene." This brings more and more whites who displace and marginalize the original residents through increasing prices. Cities such as New York, Boston, and San Francisco all have neighborhoods that originally had mostly poor, uneducated African Americans, and now are swelling with young, educated whites that have greatly increased the price of living. In Boston, Charlestown, Jamaica Plains, and Beacon Hill have all experienced intense characteristics of gentrification from the 1970s up until the present, showcasing an increase in the population with at least a bachelor's degree, as well as a large increase in new and renovated buildings. In New York, the most famous example of gentrification is in Harlem, has undergone a process of gentrification after becoming known as the national, and even international symbol for black culture with a vibrancy that is not seen in the suburbs. Finally, in San Francisco, in the bay area, there has been a massive influx of affluent companies that have completely devastated the middle class due to a high rise in wealthy, educated, employees. These employees have taken residence up in the bay area, causing the entirety of the already previously gentrified neighborhood to skyrocket to unobtainable prices, even for the ... Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson From the violent and brutal clash between Indians [1], and British colonists in Massachusetts during King Philip's War (1675–6) grew a new literary genre. After their redemption, some colonists who had been prisoners of the Indians wrote autobiographical accounts of their experiences. These captivity narratives developed a large audience, and interest in the narratives continued into the nineteenth century.[2] After her capture and redemption, Mary Rowlandson published what some historians call "America's first best seller," entitled Narrative Of the Captivity and Restoratio;t of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson.[3] Through her use of scripture and portrayal of the relationship ... In return, God would protect his chosen people. In "God's Promise to His Plantations," John Cotton, one of Winthrop's contemporaries, explained that "what hee [God] hath planted he will maintain ... his owne plantation shall prosper, & flourish." Cotton urged Puritans to "Have speciall care that you have had the ordinances [of God] planted amongst you," because "As soon as God's ordinances cease, yor security ceaseth likewise."[7] Cotton warned his fellow Puritans that breaking the covenant with God would result in a loss of his protection for his chosen. By quoting the scriptural story of Joseph, Rowlaridson illustrated her belief that the Puritans were the chosen people of God. When pondering the timely attack of the Indians on Lancaster, which took place shortly after the troops protecting the town left for want of provisions, she wrote that God "orders all things for his holy ends": Shall there be evil in the city find the Lord hath not done it? They are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph; there fore they shall go captive with the first that go captive. • 9. Comparing The Black Cat And Masque Of Red Death Edgar Allan Poe was a writer born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. Poe had a tragic childhood losing both parents before the age of three. Poe is popular in American literature and international for his horror genre. Poe left a huge impact in literature he helped develop the common short stories we have today. Kenny Gerald states ,"Poe was yet the first important American writer to foreground violence..." Growing up he faced many challenges and lived in poverty for a period of time. When his works finally started getting attention he tried to get better pay. Poe wrote stories about alcoholism and depression which is ironic because in reality he was facing the same situation. Poe died October 7, 1849 and it still remains a mystery ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His death was like a page out of his own short story, mysterious and dark. "In 'The Black Cat' and 'Masque of Red Death'," Poe uses characterization to develop of a theme where the main characters descent into madness. My essay will compare and contrast these two stories using characterization. This also ties to the theme because both main characters go mad because of their decisions and actions. They lead themselves to their own destruction. The Black Cat starts off as the narrator writing in his jail cell waiting for his scheduled hanging. He is unnamed and contradicts himself from the start stating he isn't mad , although he knows the terrible things he has done to his pets and wife. The narrator explains how he went from a normal person into a murderer awaiting his death. I will go in more detail explaining how the narrator's decisions and way of life drive him to madness. The Black Cat narrator explains since he was young he loved animals. He also married young with a women who loved animals just like him. He owned a black cat named Pluto which he describes as, "was favorite pet and playmate"(Poe paragraph 5). From this we can see the narrator is very passionate about animals and has a kind heart. • 11. The Story of Jia Sheng: Coming to America From the early year of his life as a undergraduate student in China, Jia Sheng dreamed of going to America for his advanced education. When he graduated from Liaoning University, he was accepted by Brown University as a graduate student. He thought this was a great oppotunity for his life. Journey from China to America Jia Sheng had a long journey from his hometown Shenyang in Northeast China to Providence Rhode Island in the United States in the fall of 1983. It took him over 14 hours by train from Shenyang to Beijing. When he said goodbye to his father, mother, and his brother in the train station, he felt very sad because this was the first time he left home for such long journey. He did not know when he was able to see them again. When he was on board of an ariplane in the Beijing airport on August 23, he was very excited because this was his first time to take airplane in his life. Beijng airport then was not very big. There were only a few airplanes there. There was no direct flight from Beijing to JFK in New York city 30 years ago. The airplane had to stop at least three times for gasline and check ups. The first stop was Shanghai airport for two hours. More passages were on board. When the plane took out again, there were tears in Jia's eye because he knew this time he had to said goodbye to China. After over 10 hours flight, the airplane landed again at Anchorage airport in Alaska. It was very dark outside. He did not have a chance to see much about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. John Calvin on God's Divine Providence Essay John Calvin on God's Divine Providence In John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion he spends a great deal of time expounding his doctrine of God's Divine providence in all of creation. He explains not only how God continually governs the laws of nature, but also how God governs man's actions and intentions to bring about His own Divine Will. Calvin believes that God's providence is so encompassing in creation that even a man's own actions, in many ways, are decreed by God. Because of this belief there arises the question, "Does Calvin leave room for the free will of man?" At the outset I must make clear that Calvin defines Providence as this: "providence means not that by which God idly observes from heaven what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He believes that God's act of creation did not stop after He created man, but continues all throughout the past, present and future. Calvin not only believes that God cares for all of man and animals, but directs the weather and excersises His power over inanimate objects. Calvin even goes so far as to argue that the movement of the sun, moon, stars, and planets is continued by God's power and not by some energy that was given to them at the beginning of creation, which "carnal sense" would tell us (Calvin 197). He does not believe that God sits back and watches or allows things in nature to happen, but actually causes them to happen. For example, if there was a drought one summer it was caused by God, possibly part of His vengeance or wrath. Or, if the crops flourished the next summer it was also His plan. Likewise, let us say per chance (no pun intended) a man is walking along a mountain pass and some rocks fall and kill him. For Calvin this was not an accident, but a determination and the Will of God. Calvin's ideology of God's Providence in nature is summed up in this quote: And truly God claims, and would have us grant him, omnipotence –– not the empty, idle, and almost unconscious sort that the Sophists imagine, but a watchful, effective, active sort, engaged in ceaseless activity. Not, indeed, an omnipotence that is only a general principle of confused motion, as if he were to command a river to flow through its once–appointed channels, but one that ... • 15. Calvin's Reflection For this assignment, I have decided to dissect Calvin's writing on the meaning of God's way. God's ways are something that is often hard for us to comprehend because our finite minds struggle to understand how an infinite God works. Calvin does a great job building a case for God's ways based off of what we can observe through our experiences and scriptures. The main purpose for this section is to show how God works despite of our shortcomings and misunderstandings. It becomes easy in the issues of life to feel as if God has left us but Calvin makes a case for how God work in the midst of even those times. The first argument that is made is that God's providence must be considered with regard to the future as well as the past. The interesting thing about God is that He lives outside of time. We often think of things in a linear term because that is how we think but God lives outside of time. This is why Calvin's first point of Calvin's point is one that is important. If God lives outside of time and has a complete view then He really can work all things together for those that follow Him. This means that even though I may be going through a rough time now I can be sure that it will out all work in the end because we know that we serve a faithful God. laid out his understanding of the nature of providence, Calvin turns to the purpose of the doctrine. However, one should note that just as he already began to draw these practical effects during his account of the nature of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

New England And The Chesapeake Region Before 1700 Essay New England And The Chesapeake Region Before 1700 Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by the people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. The reasons for this distinct development were mostly based on the type on people from England who chose to settle in the two areas, and on the manner in which the areas were settled. New England was a refuge for religious separatists leaving England, while people who immigrated to the Chesapeake region had no religious motives. As a result, New England formed a much more religious society then the Chesapeake region. John Winthrop states that their goal was to form "a city upon a hill", which represented a "pure" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Wage and Price Regulations in Connecticut is an example of common laws being justified by the bible. Also in this document the word "community " is emphasized, just as Winthrop emphasizes it saying: "we must be knit together in this work as one man". The immigrants to New England formed very family and religiously oriented communities. Looking at the emigrant lists of people bound for New England it is easy to observe that most people came in large families, and large families support the community atmosphere. There were many children among the emigrants, and those children were taught religion from their early childhood, and therefore grew up loyal to the church, and easily controllable by the same. Any deviants from the regime were silenced or persecuted before they could start any movements that would be a threat to the authority of the church. Even people like Ann Hutchinson and Roger Williams, who only slightly deviated from the teaching of the Puritan church were expelled and forced to move to Rode Island. As a result of this tight religious control the society became very conservative in New England, and life evolved to be simple and not elaborate as in Virginia. In the Chesapeake region almost everything was exactly opposite of New England. The immigrants were not idealists, but materialists, most of whom sought money. Later, Roger Williams arriving in what today is Rhode Island, where he is to established a settlement with twelve "loving friends and neighbors" in 1636. All these events contributed to the idea that the explorers were more important than the scientific revolution and the reformation. Thus, the most important period to me was the explorers because without them we wouldn't have some of the things we have today because they found the New World we use today and without them we would not have had the triangle trade. The author maintains that "Jenner concluded that cowpox not only protected against smallpox but could be transmitted from one person to another as a deliberate mechanism of protection." "On May 1, 1796 he inoculated an eight–year–old boy, James Phipps, who had never had smallpox. Phipps became slightly ill over the course of the next 9 days but was well on the 10th. On July 1 Jenner inoculated the boy again, this time with smallpox matter. "Smallpox, also called variola major, acute infectious disease that begins with a high fever, headache, and back pain and then proceeds to an eruption on the skin that leaves the face and limbs covered with cratered pockmarks, or pox. James Albert Gronniosaw, An African Prince "I cannot but admire the footsteps of Providence; astonished that I should be so wonderfully preserved", remarked James Albert Gronniosaw as he recounts his life experiences in A Narrative of the Most Remarkable Particulars in the Life of James Albert Ukawsaw Gronniosaw, an African Prince (Gronniosaw 28). The footsteps of Providence that Gronniosaw mentions in the quote above refer to God's guidance of human destiny and his intervention in the world. The significance of exploring the role of providence in Gronniosaw's life is that it gives the reader further insight into Gronniosaw's perspective on the events of his life, which he believes are not caused by chance but rather the providence of God. In the narrative of James Albert Gronniosaw, providence influences the actions of men, administers vengeance, and serves as a source of guidance. Each of these roles of providence help to preserve Gronniosaw through various trials and tribulations that he endures in his life. The first role of providence that appears in the narrative is to influence the actions of men toward Gronniosaw. For example, when Gronniosaw was brought to the Gold Coast, the King of the land intended to kill him because the King perceived Gronniosaw, the grandson of a rival king, to be a spy. Though Gronniosaw was deeply troubled by this threat of death, he was convinced that God would work miracles on his behalf. Accordingly, the providence of God granted Gronniosaw favor as displayed when the writer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Men in this society were the head of their households, pillars in the community and leaders in the church. There were a few women for example, Anne Hutchinson who tried to speak out publicly. The fact that that she was a women declaring her spiritual authority in a public setting made her even more dangerous in the eyes of Massachusetts authorities. Therefore, she and her closest adherents were banished from the colony, with most, including Hutchinson herself, moving to the more tolerant Rhode Island. • 33. My Vacation To The Bahamas : My Trip To Bahamas, Bahamas My Vacation to Nassau, Bahamas When I was in eighth grade I went on my first trip out of the country to Nassau, Bahamas. Going on this trip was one of the most exciting and unforgettable times of my life. Not only was it a fun experience, it was also the first time I realized that I love traveling. While there I was lucky enough to visit many places, such as Blue Lagoon Island and the beautiful Atlantis Resort, and immerse myself in the Bahamian culture. My time in The Bahamas was not my only great memory from that trip. The journey to get to The Bahamas itself was also quite interesting. There was only one week before I left for my trip to the Bahamas. My dad had already booked our trip and he told me we were staying in the little hotel across the street from the Atlantis Resort in Nassau, Bahamas. To be honest I was pretty upset about it. Although before leaving for our vacation I was given the great news from my dad that we were not staying at the hotel across from the resort and we were actually staying at the huge Atlantis Royal Towers section of the Atlantis Resort with a great view. This news had completely brightened my day. Two days after finding out the fantastic news we left for the airport at around three o'clock in the morning. We flew out of O'Hare International Airport so we had to ride on a tram to get the airport where something happened that, to me, is rather coincidental. Since it was only three in the morning there was no one on the tram except for my parents and I, along with a young couple. Once we got off the tram we made our way to the gate for our flight to Miami, Florida to board the connecting flight to Nassau. When we got on the plane we recognized the people in our row as the same young couple we saw on the tram earlier in the morning! After landing and making our way to the connecting flight we noticed that the young couple from the flight was going to the Bahamas as well. I just thought that the encounter was a pretty interesting coincidence and is something that I will probably remember for quite a while. After experiencing the memorable and somewhat coincidental journey to the Bahamas we decided to take a boat from Nassau to Blue Lagoon Island. I would describe Blue Lagoon ... The film Rear Window effectively and heavily implements all four aspects of mise–en–scene in order to create themes that can easily be understood and broken down by and for its' viewers. Sound and lack thereof is also used successfully especially in scenes where conversations cannot be made out either because music is used to deafen the audience or simply because the conversations are seen from Jeff's perspective in which case he is simply too far away to hear anything. The primary setting of Rear Window as well as the important costumes and props that are present in this film are what allow this film to flow so well. Character movements and performances in Rear Window leave viewers with enigmas as well as reveal motifs that will be constantly seen or mentioned throughout the film. Lighting and sound are certainly key as they add to the suspense of Rear Window and offer even more enigmas. Normally too much of something is never a good thing, but the heavy use of mise–en–scene in Rear Window makes the styles of the film very strong. The primary setting of Rear Window which takes place in the apartment of L.B. Jefferies reveals an interesting and reoccurring motif. This motif is that Jeff is this "all seeing eye," but beyond that, there is nothing else. It's the idea that he has this great source of power, but he cannot act on it. • 45. Divine Providence In Puritan Literature Divine Providence in Puritan Literature Puritan writing is unique in how the authors incorporated their beliefs. For the Puritans, religion was an intimacy between them and the Lord, it was an individual feeling not to be controlled by anyone but themselves. Among many other ideologies, they believed in Divine Providence, meaning everything that happens in life, whether it be good or bad, was God's will. Authors could tie this theme into their literature through their own experiences. The Puritan belief of Divine Providence is greatly exemplified in the excerpts of William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation and Mary Rowlandson's A Narrative of Her Captivity. In Of Plymouth Plantation, William Bradford describes his experiences with God's Providence during the voyage to Plymouth Rock. He uses his belief of Divine Providence to make God a part of the story, by giving him credit for all that happens, and making the Lord a part of everything in his life, because to Bradford, He is. This usage can be well explained in one of the first events of the excerpt. Bradford tells of a young seaman who condemned and cursed the poor, because of their illnesses. The seaman told the poor he hoped to cast them into the sea before they reached land. The man contracted a painful disease and was the first to be thrown overboard, which Bradford claimed was a punishment from God, "Thus his curses light on his own head, and it ... • 51. The Theological Definition Of Providence There are many subjects in Christendom that are heavily debated. One in particular, is the providence debate. The theological definition of providence is, "God's governing of the universe. "God's support, care, and supervision of all creation, from its beginning to all eternity. The terms comes from Latin providentia, which in turn derives from the verb provideo, "to foresee," but far more is meant than foresight or foreknowledge." Some evangelicals hold that God's providence is meticulous: He governs each and every detail. Others hold that it is more general: He controls the "big picture", but gives humans freedom to make their own choices." There are many scriptures in the Bible to back up God's providence in the world. However, the word providence is not actually written in the Bible, but it represents a biblical doctrine. Not only that, "there is no Hebrew equivalent for "providence," used only of human foresight." Many other issues have to be considered when speaking on the providence of God. The doctrine of salvation, and the doctrine of God are theological issues that has to be incorporated in this debate. Scotti was first published in 2003 by Little, Brown and Company in New York City. The novel attempts to recreate the confusion, chaos, and devastation before, during, and after one of the largest hurricanes to hit New England. The "Long Island Express," as it was named for its speed and impact location, killed 682 people and had massive implications for the region as a whole particularly, the coastal areas where its effects were felt the most. The novel draws less on these implications and instead focuses on a play–by–play of the storm from several perspectives. If the novel was meant for the few looking to acquire new and meaningful knowledge about the 1938 hurricane, I believe it has not delivered in that regard. My goal in reading the book aligned more with the latter of those two options and so I do not believe the novel to have been worthwhile, but others with different tastes might argue otherwise. • 55. Elizabeth I, Monarch Of England, And Marie De L '... Elizabeth I, monarch of England, and Marie de l'Incarnation, a French nun, both invoked God and other forms of religious power to stake their claims to authority. Elizabeth's role as a queen came at a time when her country was going through political turmoil. Marie's role as a missionary in New France was to civilize the indigenous people. Although working to better their countries, both of these writers are vastly different due to their social positions. While Elizabeth had the substantial task of ruling over her country, Marie was serving her country as a missionary; however, both writers utilize religion to accomplish their various duties. Marie utilized her understanding of religion and the Native's understanding of religion to build a relationship built on trust. She arrived in modern day Quebec in the late 1630's as a missionary from her country to educate and civilize the Natives there to match European traditions. Marie found similarities with the indigenous people as even though they didn't have a God, they had their own forms of worship. In Letter 65 to her son, she answers his questions regarding the "Savages'" beliefs on divinity. "Certain ones adored the sun and offered its sacrifices. Others had recourse to certain spirits who they said provided over the woods but all obeyed their dreams as a divinity" (Marie, 368). That aspect is our adherence to moral ethics and just laws. This developed cultural trait has ensured the progression of society and the safety in developing a complacency to fear or harm. It is law, that protects us from the dangers of ourselves and the malevolence of others. However, the law has never been indefectible or paradisiac. The laws of man often reveal their faultiness, and their vulnerability to pervasive interpretation. Providence College is a liberal arts college, which consists of roughly four thousand undergraduate students, located in Providence, Rhode Island. One of the staples of the college has been the ability to live off–campus on Eaton Street starting in a student's junior year. The attraction stems from most of the party scene on the weekends being at these houses on the streets bordering the campus. However, starting in the Fall of 2017, the school is implicating a new policy that juniors are required to live on campus. Thus, this ideology cannot be a rebuttal from the school as to why students should deal with the space issue and understand the school's decision to push forward with the new off–campus policy despite the lack of space. Other schools' policies that have developed from the same issue can be utilized or modified to fix the problem at Providence College. For example, Boston College, a school which we heavily associate with and look to be on the same level with regarding our academics, has a similar space issue. Demand for on campus housing is greater than the number of beds the college has, thus students are allowed to live off campus starting their sophomore year (bc.org). The first three issues are important because they directly affect the health of the Native American population. Additionally, building trust with the Narragansett tribe in order to perform research and collaborative planning is the key to designing successful care programs specifically for the Narragansett Indian Tribe. The first key issue is regarding Native Americans' insufficient access to health care. With the percentage of unemployment within the Native American population in Rhode Island as high as 26 percent (The Office of Minority Health, 2015), "one–third of Native American adults said there was a time in the past year when they could not afford to see a doctor" (Parrish, 2012). There is not many people from the tribe can afford health access due to the fact that 42.2 percent of the Native American population is living in poverty (The Office of Minority Health, 2015). Aside from inadequate access to health care, some of the environmental health hazards that Native Americans are often exposed to include "surface and groundwater pollution, air pollution, hazardous waste, highway run–off, illegal dumping, lead paint, radon, and biological and chemical contamination of drinking water" (Parrish, 2012). • 73. Divine Providence In Puritan Literature Divine Providence in Puritan Literature Puritan writers were unique because of how they incorporated their beliefs into their works. For the Puritans, religion was an intimacy between them and the Lord, it was an individual feeling not controlled by anyone but themselves. Among many other ideologies, they believed in Divine Providence, meaning everything that happens in life, whether it be good or bad, was God's will. Authors could tie this theme into their literature through their own experiences. The Puritan belief of Divine Providence is exemplified in the excerpts of William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation and Mary Rowlandson's A Narrative of Her Captivity. In Of Plymouth Plantation, William Bradford describes his experiences with God's Providence during the voyage to Plymouth Rock. In one of the first events of the excerpt, Bradford tells of a sailor who condemned the poor because of their illnesses. The seaman told the poor he hoped to cast them into the sea before they reached land. The man contracted a painful disease and was the first thrown overboard, which Bradford claimed was a punishment from God, "Thus his curses light on his own head, and it was an astonishment to all his fellows, for they noted it to be the just hand of God upon him" (13). Divine Providence is shown here as Bradford believes God's responsible for the ailments the sailor faced after cursing the poor. Divine Providence is used to explain the importance of the journey. • 75. The Narragansett Tribe : A Tribe Of Native Americans The Narragansett tribe is a tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area which is now Rhode Island. They are well known for their interaction with Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island. The Narragansetts were also part of the historic, King Philip's War. A war in which the natives fought against the colonists to stop the colonists' advance into America. They were originally honored by having places in Rhode Island named after them. Tribe members were very efficient and had came up with a housing system for the changing seasons. This housing system had the Narragansett changing houses for winter and summer. For the winter they lived in longhouses. "Up to 20 families would live in" a single longhouse over the winter, (Early History, Narragansett Indian Tribe). When summer would come along "the tribe would move to the shore and construct Wigwams or Wetus, temporary shelter made of bark on the outside and woven mats on the inside,"(Early History, Narragansett Indian Tribe. This housing system shows how these natives handled the changing seasons in New England. The Narragansett were resourceful and had their own way of governing. "They survived by farming corn, hunting, and fishing," (The Narragansett Indian Tribe, A Local Legacy). As for governing, the explorer Giovanni de Verrazano "described a large Indian population organized under powerful kings," (The Narragansett Indian Tribe, A Local Legacy). This large indian population is believed to be the Narragansett. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
