My Proposed Potential Annual Sporting Event
Event/Site Selection After examining the possibilities, my proposed potential annual sporting event
is a 3v3 Basketball Tournament that would take place on Xavier's campus in the Cintas Center. This
tournament would take place on a Saturday in December of each year in the Cintas Center. The
participants for this tournament would include kids and adults ages 7–22. In order to accumulate
money towards the scholarship fund, registration will cost $5/$10 and food and drinks will be
available for purchase. No exact date of this event can be determined due to possible men's and
women's basketball home games, but theoretically one Saturday in this month is available. As I
stated beforehand this event will be open to kids and adults ages 7–22. ... Show more content on

In order to help raise money in addition to registration fees, food and drinks will be available for
purchase in the Joseph Club. An executive summary of the event would appear as follows: Attention
Xavier Fans of all ages! Be sure to mark your calendars for December 3rd, 2016! The Xavier
Department of Sports Studies in partnership with Xavier Athletics is pleased to host a 3v3
tournament in an effort to raise money for a newly created undergraduate scholarship program. The
aim of this event is help raise money for a scholarship fund, and I believe we will be able to make
that happen. Through a combination of registration funds, donations, and food/drinks available this
event will be profitable and beneficial to the Xavier Department of Sports Studies and would work
in the future. Departmentalization of Event When it comes to the work necessary to help make this
proposed event succeed, we will need assistance from various departments. Departments needed for
this event to be successful include: logistics/operations, marketing, and finance. Each of these
departments will have major roles that will contribute to the success and eventual reiteration of this
program the next year. As stated in class, this event is meant to be run by students with help from the
professor. In a typical classroom setting like the one at

Personal Narrative: A Day At St. Xavier High School
"Have a good day and enjoy the experience," Mrs. Rumpke said to her son Pete and I as she dropped
us off at the front of the school by the statue of St. Francis Xavier. The cool morning but apparent
good October weather made it feel as if it'd be a good day. The large black man stood smiling and
welcomed us with open arms as we walked into the building much before school that day was set to
start, and as he motioned us into a conference room he said, "Welcome to St. Xavier High School,
please be seated and we'll start soon once just about everyone gets here." And after sitting down
anywhere we liked, because the Rumpke's seemed to arrive early at places, waited for the other kids
to roll in. Once they had all arrived, Pete and I sat talking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the math class at Moeller I remember going over rules like the transitive and reflex properties that
were just review to me since I had learned much of it in junior high. The curriculum to this point I
thought was already better despite the fact that a lot of kids didn't even pay attention to this specific
teacher.
After Algebra was over, Elijah had a free bell and I really got to see the campus more. We went to
see the weight room and the downstairs lockers that he said people called "The Cockpit," even
though to this day I have not heard it referred to as such. "Where else do you want to go," Elijah
asked.
"I don't know what else is there to see?" I responded. We then went on to wonder aimlessly outside
to look at the stadium, although I'm not sure we were allowed to go to that part of campus, but it was
worth it. Through my consideration of St. X relatively forced upon me by my good friend Pete's
family, seeing the campus, especially the stadium towards the end of the day was one of the biggest
highlights of my shadowing day.
Finally, the last class we had of the day was Modern World history where the teacher had me take a
quiz part of which entailed constitutional monarchy which I was confused on, but see that it
should've been easier to break down and think

The Special Years ( 1907 And 1908 )
The Special Years (1907 and 1908)
Between having won a financially lucrative lawsuit against the owners of the Mineral Springs Hotel
and Bathhouse, plus getting paid for still working there, and now collecting a monthly pension,
Charles is able to purchase a lot and a half for $150 ($4,000 in 2017). He is undeniably enthusiastic
as he hires men to build the first house that he and Elizabeth have ever owned. And what a location.
Near the end of a dead–end street, it is only a one block walk to church and a three block walk to
work. As August of 1907 arrives, the Okawville newspaper announces that "Charles Lorne's new
residence was nearing completion." In September he and his family move into his new residence at

What a feeling of relief and of satisfaction when he receives word on December 5 that he has won
again. His pension is to be increased to $8.00 ($210 in 2017) a month. Earning a pension that brings
in $96 ($2,500) a year is a significant increase in the income of Charles when the average worker
only makes $.22 an hour. (L141)
Charles and Elizabeth now have two more members in their family. Their first grandchild, Charlie
Koehler, is born in East St. Louis back in 1903 and their second and third grandchildren, Grace and
Irene Hall, are born in 1906 and 1907. Now, in 1908, they add two more grandchildren with the
births of Orval Koehler and Charlie Hall. Unfortunately, they all live in East St. Louis and therefore
Charles and Elizabeth are unable to see them on a regular basis. They are helped by the recent
addition of a $1.25 ($34 in 2017) round trip train ticket that can be purchased on Sundays.
Charles is a member of the Okawville Post 582 in the Grand Army of the Republic. This is a
fraternal organization of veterans who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. This entails
sometimes wearing military–style uniforms at various functions. In 1908, he is proud to learn that he
is being promoted to the rank of Aide–de–Camp to the Commander of the Post. The certificate that
he is presented with comes from the organization's headquarters in Chicago. He has it

The Design and Architecture of Sacred Sites
Introduction:
Hypothesis– "The design of sacred sites facilitates rituals and reflects an approach to the divine."
The design and architecture of sacred sites, is considered to be a highly important aspect in the
correct functioning of rituals that take place within, namely two main world religions:
Christianity/Catholicism and Judaism.
"Christianity has a close relationship with Judaism, both historically and theologically. Jesus, the
twelve disciples, the author of most of the New Testament and the members of the earliest Christian
churches were all Jews. Jesus' family also followed Jewish customs and Jesus frequently quoted the
Hebrew Bible. Followers of Jesus believe him to be the Messiah which was a figure predicted in the
Jewish Bible."(Religion Facts, 2014)
Rituals through both these religions help the participant gain a sense of closeness to their divine
being and aid their faith in ways such meditation, prayer, reflection and celebration.
This report will aim to explain how these sacred sites are designed in order to facilitate rituals and
reflect a persons experience and closeness with the divine as they partake in the sacred rituals of
their religion.
Methods of research (primary/secondary sources):
On the 27th March 2014, St Augustine's visited St Stephens Cathedral and the Brisbane City
Synagogue. Primary evidence was collected from both these sacred sites through the tour guides that
gave the students knowledge and understanding about

Landfill Fire Threatens Nuclear Waste Site Outside St. Louis
Later the EPA admitted that people who work at the West Lake Landfill have to be cautious and
careful to protect their health. According to Veronica LaCapra's report, "Landfill Fire Threatens
Nuclear Waste Site Outside St. Louis." if the Westlake Landfill's soil is disarranged, "radioactive
dust particles could be released into the atmosphere." Unfortunately, it may lead to the inhalation of
airborne radioactive dust particles. If these particles are inhaled by workers it could seriously harm
their health. The EPA suggested that continued monitoring is advised and necessary, due to possible
elevated levels of radon in the air at the landfill and the surrounding area. It seems full safety
processes must be put into place to reduce harmful dusting to protect everyone from potential
exposure during any cleanups. Even though the residents of North St. Louis, the EPA and other
authorities have their points of view, further serious claims continue to be revealed. An oppositional
statement using government records and the EPA 's data was reported by Véronique LaCapra just
recently. In the article "Confused about Bridgeton, West Lake landfills? Here 's what you should
know," published on October 20, 2015 on the KWMU 's website, states that there were reports about
high level of radiation found in residential areas and trees. In addition, a second report was released
about the Wilfong family who lives in Bridgeton, MO within smelling distance of the landfill. The

Essay about The honor code
How will the honor code impact my academic and campus life?
Throughout my years at Xavier and beyond I intend to follow the Xavier Honor Code so I can
become a cooperative and responsible person. By being a student at Xavier I notice I will have to
take responsibility of my actions and faults. In order for Xavier to trust me and to allow me to
continue attending their school, I will have to follow their rules and be respectful. Not only should I
do these things, but also I have to respect myself in order to respect others. In following the Honor
Code at Xavier I will learn more about others, the school, and myself. The Honor Code will impact
my academic and campus life because it will lead my way to the ... Show more content on

By being honorable I will have to be truthful, honest, and, respectful throughout any situation. This
means I will have to be straightforward dealing with my academics, personal life at Xavier, and
campus life. I will have to take responsibility of my actions and choices. My actions at Xavier will
determine whom I will become and what I am going to do with my life.
Trust at Xavier is a very important issue. In order for Xavier to trust me I have to have trust in others
and myself. Xavier has to trust me from the day I enter their school until the day of graduate.
Honesty is the key to trust for it will set me free from cheating, lying ,
Ganier 2 and being immoral. Also, I have to choose whom I become friends with because if I don't
trust them I will get into bad situations. I should have a close relationship with Xavier and myself so
I can become trustful.
Xavier's Honor System will give me an opportunity to endure in many experiences. Even if the
experiences are good or bad it will give me a chance to learn from my mistakes. By experiencing
things I can learn more about myself. In college I have the freedom to do anything I want, but I
shouldn't take it lightly. The honor code will teach me not to have too much freedom and how to
manage my time.
Life at Xavier is going to be fun, but I have to be mature. Maturity is also a goal I must reach while
attending Xavier. I have to be mature about things in order to be treated as a young adult.

This would authorize the people of the territory to form a constitution and a state government and
this was the goal they hoped to achieve. They also set out for the admission of the territory to be in
the Union and on equal footing with the original states. By 1819, Congress was considering
allowing legislation. This would authorize Missouri to frame a constitution for the state. Missouri
wanted admission from the Union and the Northern states opposed it. They felt as if the Southern
states that were slaveholding had too much power already. Also, the Constitution allowed states to
count each slave as three–fifths of a person. They determined population with these numbers which
raised the amount of Congressional representatives the state could have. Thus, the South had an
advantage in Congress. After the first petition was applied, a debate occurred over the government's
right to restrict slavery. Since popular support in northern states for the restriction of slavery
remained high, northern politicians had strong incentives to oppose the admission of any new states
with slavery (Forbes, 2007). The Missouri Compromise came about in 1820. It was an effort for the
Senate and House of Representatives to seek a balance of power between the slave states and the
Free states. After a debate, the Missouri Compromise was passed in February of 1821. This served
notice to the North that Southerners did not want slavery to end and they wanted to expand it.

After graduation, I plan on doing a year of service, preferably with an organization that focuses on
legal services and advocacy. This is because my dream is to be a human rights lawyer and
dedicating a year of volunteer service will give me the experience I need before enrolling into law
school. Another reason why I am dedicating one year after graduation to service is because I am
very passionate about helping my neighbors. Here at Xavier, I have learned how to be a woman for
and with others and therefore I share my gifts, pursue justice and have concern for the poor and the
marginalized. I aspire to keep that value for the rest of my life. In doing the service work, I will also
keep the value of solidarity and Kinship as this will enable me to build a strong relationship with the
people I work with. I will keep this value by respecting and honoring those around me and taking

Laundry Service Business Plan 1. Executive Summary Xpress Laundry Service is a laundry service
designed to save Xavier University students the one commodity that they can never get more of:
time. The average student wastes an average of 1 ½ hours in the laundry room either weekly or bi–
weekly. This unproductive use of time has created a strong demand among Xavier resident students
for a company to take this burden of endlessly washing and folding clothes off of their hands.
Xpress Laundry Service seeks to meet this demand by providing a much needed high quality service
to these students at a fair and always low price. 2. Company Description Xpress Laundry Service is
a full service laundry service designed with the college student's budget in mind. Basically, Xpress
picks up the students' laundry from their residence hall, washes and folds the laundry using only
Tide premium detergents, and drops the laundry off within 48 hours. This service is provided at the
low price of just $8 per wash which is defined by the amount of laundry that the customer can fit
into an Xpress Laundry Bag (about 25lbs.) Currently Xpress' clientele is continuing to grow each

The Ceiling Art of Pozzo's Triumph of Sain Ignatius of...
#######poorly written######Pozzo's Triumph of Saint Ignatius of Loyola is on the ceiling of the
Church of Sant'Ignazio in Rome, and was painted from 1685–1694. It is approximately 56 feet by
115 feet across the ceiling, and uses a quadratura perspective to create an almost three dimensional
effect. While the effect makes the center look much higher, it is actually painted on an arched ceiling
called a barrel vault. This is a fresco painting, a type of coloring that made the painting integral to
the construction of the building or item. Inside the Church of Sant'Ignazio, there is a single white tile
indicating where the viewer is intended to stand to truly appreciate Pozzo's work. The scene
illustrates many different saints and other highly viewed people, all ascending towards the sky.
There is also allegorical figures of the 4 continents (America, Europe, Africa, and Asia) attached to
the side of the buildings windows at the base of the painting. The scene is filled with cherubs that
seem to be aiding the continents and saints. At the center of the painting, Saint Ignatius is following
Christ into heaven, with beams of light coming from his body towards the four continents. The
arches at the ends of the painting also add to the illusion that the center of the painting is much
higher than the rest of it. Saint Francis Xavier is also shown in the work ascending towards the
heavens.

The Floppy Drive in a Musical Context Essay
1.1 Mechanism of a "musical" floppy drive The floppy drive itself is musical in a certain way
depending on what people may perceive as musical such as the sound of friction. In my project, the
floppy drive makes sounds through pitched notes due to friction between the read–write head and
the diskette. It produces notes since the diskette has contact friction with read write head, in
revolution. Recall that sine waves can be viewed as the progression of a circle over time, or a
revolution. Spinning at higher speeds increases the pitch and also the frequency. The spindle motor
spins the floppy drive at a certain speed controlled by the microcontroller. Then, read write head will
be positioned on the diskette with a drive motor that will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In resume, we produce sound by using a floppy drive, a computer and a microcontroller. Simply
convert properly and if there is contact between the read write head and the diskette itself, it will
produce an audible pitch. 1.2 The use of floppy drive music in musical context Floppy music is
quite good to listen to in my opinion. However, some might consider it as not musical due its lack of
musical characteristic as the floppy drive was not invented to be a musical instrument but a disk
reader. It also does not make any musical association with most people since floppy drives are
associated with computers and electronics. The contexts where this type of instrument might be
considered "musical" in my opinion would be the internet, a creative project and certain
performances. It has never been used formally as an instrument, however, due to the tesla coils
success in concerts, I speculate that introducing floppy drive music would be a success since most
YouTube videos with a musical floppy drive have pretty high number of views and critics have been
grateful the singing tesla coils. Musical diskette readers should be possible since there are a few
bands that try to implement a new experience in the audience by using new instruments that are not
associated with music like tesla coils. It turns out to be accepted by a restricted to a limited

Arrived in India and living amongst the Christians of Comorin, he had asked the natives if they
knew about our Lord Jesus Christ and if any of them were in fact Christians, and many replied yes
that they were Christians, but upon talking to them more he found out that they knew nothing and
they just called themselves Christians. St. Xavier had his teachings translated into their native

St. Xavier teaching was heading to a positive outcome, even towards baptisms for the villages.
The locals believed in St. Xavier teachings and they took their sick relatives for his blessing. St.
Francis got God's message across and converted many natives to Christians. In his final text he said
he found this to be easy in India, the natives picked up quickly on the religion.
In the second letter St. Francis sent was the "Letters on the Missions" and he sent it to St.
Ignatius de Loyola, in 1549. He told him that the mission did not go as planned. The Indian natives
did not want anything to do with him or his religion. In his letter, he explained to St.
Ignatius that the natives did not want to listen and only want to argue and since it was not there
custom they didn't care. St. Xavier stated that they are savagely and that it was different from his last
journey, the cities are so spread out that he would not be able to spread the word of
Christianity to everyone. St. Francis is upset because they are working so hard to convert the natives

Douglas Mawson, 'Into The Unknown :Into The Unknown'
Unit 1 ELA Essay
Imagine if you were in the arctic with two other people and both of your travelling mates died; you
were all alone, and you were many miles away what would you do? This is the story of Douglas
Mawson. Douglas Mawson went on a painful journey to the Antarctic("Into the Unknown"). There
is yet still two other people that faced adversity and contributed to science. Henrietta Lacks was
second in facing the most adversity in the course of contributing to science, she has a cancer and she
dies at the age of thirty– one from the cancer. Phineas Gage had the least amount adversity in the
course of contributing to science, he was working one day and a metal pole blasted through his head
and he lived for eleven years after that. Douglas Mawson endured the most adversity in the course
of contributing to science for a few reasons.
Douglas Mawson had travelling mates die on him, as seen in the article "Into the Unknown". To
begin, Ninnis died. Ninnis was walking along and took a different path and he fell into a crevasse
and Mertz and Mawson never found him. Ninnis had all of the valuable gear and most of the food,
this meant that they had to live on very little food. In addition, to Ninnis dying his other travelling
friend Mertz died. Mertz died in his sleep, and Mawson was unsure how he died in his sleep. The
article reveals, "Many years later some researchers speculated that Mertz's debilitation was caused
by poisonous overdoses of vitamin A from the huskies liver",

My Experience At St. Xavier 's Social Service Center
As a part of curriculum, every student of my high school has to do 100 hours to community service

was assigned to work at St. Xavier's Social Service Center whose primary target was to help
children who lost their parents during civil war. I still remember the first day of my social service.
As soon as I entered the social service center, I was in a huge hall where more than 30 children were
studying. The hall had nothing but a thin carpet. Everyone was so surprised to see a new face. I
introduced myself and said that I was there to help them with their studies. After few minutes of ice
breaker, everyone continued with their works. After roaming for some time and helping some
children with their work, I saw a little boy in the middle of the hall. His feet was covered with a
blanket. He seemed confused. I went to him and asked if he had any problems. He was shy at first,
but after sometime he told me that he had problems solving his mathematics' homework. I helped
him and stayed with him until he completed everything. He was quite a talented guy. He grabbed the
concepts quickly. After an hour, it was time for him to go to his school. He signaled one of his friend
something. After few minutes, his friend showed up with a wheel chair. This was when I realized
that the kid didn't have his left leg. I was surprised and shocked. After everyone left, I talked to the

Casino Gambling Controversy
INTRODUCTION
Local legal casino gambling has gained popularity in the United States after a long history of
prohibition in many parts of the country. Casino gambling was outlawed in the early 1900's before
being legalized in Nevada and the city of Las Vegas in 1931. In 1978, gambling was legalized in
Atlantic City, New Jersey (casino–history.org). Las Vegas continues to dominate as the number one
casino destination. Atlantic City and New Jersey have taken a hit as completion in surrounding
states increases every year. Pennsylvania surpassed New Jersey as the number two casino
destination in the United States in 2015 (Tisdall 2). Today, 43 states have casinos
(americancasinosguide.com). Since the birth of the Internet, gambling online has grown into a new
industry. Online gambling is continuing to grow to this day and is an industry already worth billions.
Many of the issues in today's society and legislatures have moved away from the issue of if casinos
should be legal towards the issue of should sports gambling be legal on websites such as
draftkings.com and fanduel.com.
Legalized casino gambling is still a very important topic that continues to cause controversy
throughout the states. According to statista.com, the United States casino market had revenues of
approximately 65 billion dollars in 2015. This revenue stemmed from the 1,511 casinos open
throughout the United States (statista.com). The sheer amount of revenue the casino industry

Literary Devices In Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth
Norton Juster's book, The Phantom Tollbooth successfully used different types of literary devices to
introduce the main theme of the novel which was the importance of education. Juster told the story
of a boy named Milo who was described as, "...a boy... who didn't know what to do with himself–
not just sometimes, but always" (1961, p. 9). Milo was very indecisive and overall, he leads a pretty
boring and uneventful life. However, all of that changed when he came home from school one day
and noticed a mysterious tollbooth in his bedroom. The tollbooth made him start to realize the value
of education and the importance of enjoying what was going on in his day to day life. The literary
devices Juster chose to use in his writing increased the quality of his work and they also helped
allow him to engage his readers in what they were reading more. Juster uses a wide variety of
different types of literary devices throughout the entire story but three of the most common are
irony, puns, and allegory. One of the most ironic moments in the book is when Milo, Tock, and
Humbug enter the Valley of Sound on their way to Digitopolis. From the time they entered the
valley it is obvious that something was missing. Juster wrote, "at first it was difficult to tell just what
had changed– it all looked the same and it all smelled the same– but for some reason, nothing
sounded the same" (1961, p. 144). By making the Valley of Sound of all places completely silent in
the book, readers become more

Group Names Essay
Different animals have different grouping names and to most people it seems like just a random
selection of how the group name was formed. When ravens group together it is called an
unkindness, when lion get together it is called a pride and when tigers get together it is called an
ambush. Lions and Tigers seem very similar but have different group names. One is "pride" which
means "high or inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority" and
ambush means "an act or instance of lying concealed so as to attack by surprise." Despite these two
groups of animals being very similar, they have different animal grouping names with very different
meanings/connotations. There are many different animal grouping names and this paper will

Going back to my original example the lion, a group of lions is called a pride. A pride of lions is
comprised of five or more lions. The female lions in the pride do most of the hunting for the group
and have developed and use their hunting tactics to catch prey. The term pride means "high or
inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority." Therefore, it is likely that
these animals were perceived as prideful in the way that they hunt. An animal that have hooves and
exists/travel collectively are grouped together as "herds." These are the animals that eat, live and
travel together. A herd is a defined as a "social grouping of certain animals of the same species,
either wild or domestic. The form of collective animal behavior associated with this is referred."

was unable to make converts because of the dissensions rending the country. St. Francis Xavier
retraced his steps back to the center of Japan and started preaching there again and starting up

St. Francis Xavier Church In Kearns
In Kearns, Utah –– a sacramental bread symbolically received as the Body of Christ during a
Catholic mass communion at St. Francis Xavier Church reportedly bled for three days after it was
returned.
Daily Mail reports the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City has appointed a committee to investigate
the miraculous incident of the bleeding consecrated Host, reportedly returned by a young
parishioner to a priest last week.
Traditionally, a leftover host is not thrown away once consecrated. It's usually dissolved in water
until it totally turns liquid, and poured into a special sink down to the ground. In this case, however,
a strange phenomenon happened.
"Recently, reports of a bleeding host at St. Francis Xavier Church in Kearns have been circulating
within the diocese," wrote Diocese of Salt Lake City committee head Monsignor M. Francis
Mannion in a statement. "The host is now in the custody of the Diocesan Administrator. Contrary to
rumor, there are NO current plans for public exposition or adoration." ... Show more content on

The bread and wine prepared for communion symbolically turn into the body and blood of Jesus
Christ during the consecration rite of the Catholic mass. The consecration reminds believers of what
Jesus Christ did to his disciples during 'The Last Supper.'
According to the Bible, the bread and wine distributed by Jesus was a metaphor for his passion and
death. It was through Christ's death and resurrection that made unbelievers believe that God is real
and it is through the gospel spoken at Christian churches for more than a thousand years that
continue to make more people believe.

Wainwright Building
The relationship between "form" and "function" had always been the core of Sullivan's career. In his
point of view, anything, whether it is organic or inorganic, could be deemed as the representation of
its content and function, and every particular function has developed its own form. Sullivan explain
this idea by illustrating oak tree in his Kindergarten Charts, he wrote, "generally speaking outer
appearances resemble inner purposes. For instances, the form, oak tree, resembles and expresses the
function or purpose, oak" (Sullivan, Kindergarten chats). In here, "form" could be understood as
phenomenon of things, but not just the appearance. In his article, "The Tall Office Building
Artistically Considered," published in 1986, Louis Sullivan ... Show more content on

But, actually, what Sullivan really cares about is the "form." Otherwise, he would not have this
much thoughts about the relationship between form and function. Sullivan always gives high
priority to architectural form, especially its ornament, but with a kind of ambivalence in his mind.
On the one hand, he believes that architecture could be great without any decoration or ornament.
On the other hand, thoughtful designed ornament is also indispensable to architecture. Finally, he
gave the answer, he thinks particular ornament should be applied on the particular kinds of
architecture, just like different trees have various types of leaves. So, architectural form is not
influenced by the extrinsic factor, but the "growth" of itself. Now it is understandable why
Wainwright Building got such a luxuriant ornament on its top. Under the eave, the surface between

Peter The Great : A Successful Ruler Who Changed Russia...
Peter Alexeyevich or as he is best known as, Peter the Great, is recognized from history as a very
successful ruler who drastically changed Russia into a dominant power. Not only was Russia a large,
almighty country with a strenuous character, Russia was from his reign on forth European. This
transformation into a European Russian state was used to proclaim and emphasize the
advancements, civility, and grandness Russia was and had become. Russia was no longer barbaric; it
was a place of equivalence with the Western European countries, of envy, and as mentioned
previously, grandeur. Peter the Great was generally very highly esteemed and as stated by John M.

Their ideas and ideals were known throughout and depending on how the people viewed them
themselves, their ideas may have much more easily swayed and stuck with the public. Their views
on Peter the Great were therefore easily exerted out to the people and these views depended highly
on their relation to Peter and what they themselves heard of him. This is how Peter throughout these
empresses' rulings became more than a past ruler, he became a legacy of some sort. Empress Anna
Ioannovna ruled from the early to nearly–mid 1700s, she was known to be rather fat, ugly, and have
an unlikable personality. She was very crude but largely due to her childhood and even her life
during adulthood. Her mother had a distaste towards her, "It seemed that the mere appearance of her
awkward, unattractive daughter spoiled Praskovia's mood" (Anisimov 65). In regards to Peter the
Great, she was his neice, and his mentally–ill brothers' daughter. One of the very first major things
that Peter did towards Anna was make her along with her mother and sisters move to St. Petersburg
– a very dreary, cold place that paled in comparison to Moscow where she originally lived. Living in
St. Petersburg she was very unhappy and being that Anna was very ugly and her personality not
being the greatest, finding someone to marry her off to was difficult and she was therefore much
more unhappy. But, Peter (to his benefit) came to the

Douglas Mawson : The Top Of The Pack
With regards to toughness, Douglas Mawson was at the top of the pack. He was tall, lean, and
muscular. Strong–minded and keen for a challenge, Mawson landed in Antarctica to take on the
toughest conditions the world had to offer. From his landing in 1907, Mawson had accomplished
several historic feats. He joined a team and traveled to the South Magnetic Pole, and had been the
first to climb Mount Erebus. In his mind, he was untouchable. In his mind, Antarctica was defeated;
another notch on his belt. Searching for a new challenge, he set out to map the untouched Antarctic
coastlines. He would return, but not without scars reminding him that Antarctica is not to be taken
lightly.
Douglas Mawson was born in England but lived in Australia for most of his life. One particular
detail to note is that he turned down an offer from Robert Scott to join his expedition, instead opting
to lead the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Mawson and his men arrived at Commonwealth Bay
in January 1912, setting up base and wintering over in Antarctica. When spring arrived, Mawson set
out to accomplish the purpose of his expedition. To do this, Mawson split his men into four teams,
three to go out and explore and one to stay at the base. Mawson's team was assigned to explore the
Far Eastern Shore, which was several hundred miles from the base. The area was known to be a
minefield of crevasses, a fact which Mawson certainly knew. The journey was doomed to failure

Being the Best Missionary to the Indians
A good missionary is one that simply is respected and accepted by the Indians and who has
successfully spread the word of God to them. Many qualities however though play into obtaining
this presence. A lot of Europeans that came to the new world did not possess these many qualities to
understand the Indians. As a Jesuit myself who is a part of the New France mission I do know on a
first hand basis what it takes to be a good missionary. As a part of the New France mission I have
experienced various encounters with several different Indian nations. I do admit that these native
people are very down to earth and connected with each other very well. The purpose of are mission
to New France was to spread the word of God and our Catholic faith to the natives and convert
them. This process is much easier said than it is to actually be done. For one just think about trying
to first communicate with a person who speaks a different language, has no idea who you are, and
where you came from. To sum it up basically trying to talk with an alien from another planet in the
skies. This leads me to saying that communication and patience are the top two qualities that we
missionaries have to have to even start to succeed with our mission. Other Frenchmen that came
here to the New World to start a new life do not seem up to par with are communication and
patience skills with the natives here. The fact of their skills not up to par with ours is mainly because
as a Jesuit we have been trained

Effects Of The Sauk Rapids Tornado
On the afternoon of April 14, 1886, the city of Sauk Rapids in Minnesota was nearly wiped out after
a tornado had struck the city. The whole city was left in complete devastation. Natural disasters have
always interested me, specifically tornadoes. Something about tornadoes, whether it'd be how they
form or how they acquire their power to cause great destruction, interests me to learn more about
tornadoes. This led me to research about tornadoes in Minnesota. As I began surfing the internet

to the areas that it had struck. This is where I discovered the effects of one particular tornado called

Based on this, the tornado was absolutely massive. Also, it had been reported that when the tornado
"crossed the Mississippi...local witnesses said the river was 'swept dry'..." (Douglas, Paul). This
tornado was really a force to be reckoned with. In the end, the Sauk Rapids tornado lasted only
about thirteen minutes, but devastatingly "killed 72 people and injured more than 200 and caused
over $400,000 in damages. In 2015 dollars, that would be roughly $10.4 million dollars" (NWS Des
Moines). All of this is why the Sauk Rapids tornado became known as the deadliest tornado ever in
Minnesota history.
Though the Sauk Rapids tornado destroyed the city of Sauk Rapids, the city was still able to rebuild
back to the community that they once were and become an even stronger city. Before the tornado
struck Sauk Rapids, the city was actually going through a period of growth. Many buildings were
being built such as "a general store was built, then a hotel, and a large jail...new courthouse was
built..." (Sauk Rapids Minnesota). Sauk Rapids was building to become a successful city, but
unfortunately, that wasn't able to happen because of the tornado. However, the tornado actually
helped teach Sauk Rapids a valuable lesson in terms of what materials buildings should be built out
of. A majority of the buildings, before the tornado had struck, in Sauk Rapids were built using wood:

Phantom Tollbooth Comparison
The Phantom Tollbooth is a book that tells the story of a little boy on his journey to the Land
Beyond, while the animated film Up delivers the story of an old man on his adventure to Paradise
Falls. The journey from the view point of an old man will contain differences from the one looked at
through a young child's lens. But after the journey, both Carl and Milo receive a meaningful gift that
totally change the way they look at life.
From the outset, both Milo in The Phantom Tollbooth and Carl in Up set out for a journey. But Milo
in The Phantom Tollbooth starts the journey as a young boy who "has plenty of time" and does not
mind where he is going to end up (Juster). Milo's journey, in fact, is an unforeseen adventure of an
oblivious and idle boy to the latent sea of knowledge. However, the journey of Carl in Up appears to
be a long–time planned one, and when the local authorities intend to send him to a retirement home,
they also stimulate him to begin his adventure to the Paradise Falls. Carl, an old man, decides to
take this journey as a promise to his late beloved wife. The main character in both the book and the
movie can be perceived as a pair of the young and the old, but the pair in the book and the pair in the

Saint Ignatius Of Loyola Personal Writings
The book, Saint Ignatius of Loyola Personal Writings, was translated by Joseph A. Munitiz and
Philip Endean and first published in 1996. This book contains many aspects of St. Ignatius' life,
from his reminiscences to his spiritual exercises. Inigo Lopez de Loyola was born in 1491 in Spain,
the youngest of 13 children. Inigo became a soldier at the age of 18 and began to refer to himself at
Ignatius. Ignatius becomes a man obsessed with his image and a life of luxury until his conversion
into a devout catholic. Saint Ignatius of Loyola Personal Writings tells the story of St. Ignatius' early
life obsessed with his image, and his transformation into his ultimate obsession with living a life
dedicated to Christ, that I believe may have interfered with his growing relationship with God.
St. Ignatius lived his life in vain. He was too concerned with his outward appearance, and his
reputation among others. In battle, his legs were badly injured. Even through the excruciating pain,
he made an effort to show no outer sign of discomfort. When his legs had healed, one leg was left
with an unsightly misconfiguration from the healing of the bones. He underwent another, even more,
painful surgery to fix his outer appearance. During his long recovery, St. Ignatius read about the life
of Christ and the saints. As he learned more about the holy lives of the saints, St. Ignatius was
converted and was determined to live a life the way Christ and the saints did.

St. Francis Xavier Research Paper
St. Francis Xavier Born in the Castle of Xavier near Sanguesa, in Navarre, 7 April, 1506; died on the
Island of Sancian near the coast of China, 2 December, 1552. In 1525, having completed a

sprang up between them. It was at this same college that St. Ignatius Loyola, who was already
planning the foundation of the Society of Jesus , resided for a time as a guest in 1529. He soon won

Here domestic troubles awaited him. Certain disagreements between the superior who had been left

stay in Japan he had heard much of the Celestial Empire, and though he probably had not formed a

for the spread of the light of the Gospel. With the help of friends he arranged a commission or

The University 12 Miles Away
My college education began not at the institution about which I am writing, but rather another
university 12 miles away. For two years, I attended Maryville University in St. Louis with a triple
major in English, psychology, and sociology. Maryville University's campus was small with just
three small academic buildings on campus. As I progressed from my freshman to my sophomore
year, I realized I had outgrown the small campus that had once felt comfortable. With only one key
faculty member in each of my major departments, the classes had become predictable. When the
spring of my sophomore year arrived, I decided to transfer to Webster University where I could
learn from a larger faculty with varied points of view. Although I did not spend all four years of my
undergraduate career at Webster University, I have great affection for it. The campus was a mix of
recently constructed academic buildings and repurposed historical homes in the St. Louis suburb of
Webster Groves, including the English department's home: Pearson House. The amalgamation of
buildings added a sense of both the past and the future to the university's campus; however, as a
student, I was unaware of the history behind the campus I grew to love. Coincidentally, Webster
University is celebrating its centennial this academic year.

Compare And Contrast The Garden Of Love And Harwood
Compare the techniques that the poets you studied this year use to explore the idea that truly
significant battles are fought within oneself.
Differences in people's opinions can cause major conflicts, however fighting against one's own
opposing beliefs can be tougher to resolve. Poets William Blake, G.M. Hopkins and Gwen Harwood
have produced various poems epitomising how these internal struggles can become quite
detrimental. Despite the differences in time periods and their varying cultural backgrounds, they all
convey deep messages about the struggles with worshipping their faith or religion, handling ideas
surrounding mortality and dealing with life's regrets formed by adverse situations.
Both Gerald Manley Hopkins and William Blake explore the conflicts between one's opinions and
the faith which they devoutly believe. The poems The Garden of Love and Hopkins' Thou Art
Indeed Just, Lord each show the persona doubting the philosophical qualms of life surrounding
Catholicism and whether spending "life upon thy cause," is meaningful. As a child, Blake read the
Bible to enhance his reading skills, however developed views correlating to the Swedenborgian
church which holds the Catholic church's views without the institutionalised feeling which Blake
despised of in Catholicism. The Garden of Love intertwines his beliefs into the poetry, as depicted
with the strong imagery between the vibrant childhood memory of the surroundings in comparison
to the older man's views. However,

whether training a simulated rat under a Partial Reinforcement Schedule took longer to extinguish

But the rat still makes an effort to try and see if bar pressing will end in a reward. Continuous
reinforcement extinguishes faster because the animal has always been reinforced and has never been
lead to believe that the next bar press might not produce a reward, and during extinction, it gives up
quickly. Method Apparatus The equipment used to carry out this experiment was a computer based
program located on the St. Francis Xavier University server. The program called "Sniffy– The
Virtual Rat" generated the realistic responses of a rat. This program allowed experimenters to
humanely learn about rats and their behaviours when placed in a Skinner box. This program
simulated what a typical rat would do on a typical day in a Skinner box. Procedure After accessing
the computer program on St. Francis Xavier's server, the virtual rat (the subject) was shown to be
wandering around the Skinner box. During the first project, the experimenter observes Sniffy's
behaviour. This rat is untrained and had to previous testing or training. For the first 10 minutes, the
experimenter observed Sniffy's behaviour and becomes familiar with the rats' repertoire of
behaviour. These behaviours are referred to as baseline behaviours. After observational behaviour,
the baseline frequency of bar pressing per minutes is established. The cumulative record displayed

The poem, God’s Grandeur by Gerard Manley Hopkins is an...
The poem, God's Grandeur by Gerard Manley Hopkins is an Italian sonnet, which closely follows
the traditional Italian rhyme of ABBAABBA, and then CDCDCD. (Shmoop) There are also several
words throughout the poem that rhyme within themselves. For example God, rod, trod, shod all
rhyme. Gerard Hopkins liked to use sprung rhythm in which the stressed and unstressed syllables
have a complicated relationship, and the message desired from the reader can change the rhythm.
(Shmoop) Sprung rhythm allows each person to read the poem differently and take away what they
wish. The speaker of this poem has lost faith in humanity and their treatment of the world God had
granted us. However, in the second half of the poem, the speaker shows his views of the world and
its connection to God.
In the first stanza of God's Grandeur, the speaker is amazed at the greatness of God. However, he is
dismayed by the way people treat God's creation. God himself directed humans to care for their
world. Genesis 2:15 says, "The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work
it and take care of it." (Genesis) Mankind's treatment of the Earth obviously did not measure up to
the standard that the speaker has envisioned. This is clearly visible in lines four through seven,
"Why do men then now not reck his rod? Generations have trod, have trod, have trod; and all is
seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil; and wears man's smudge and shares man's smell."

`` Peace `` By Gerard Manley Hopkins
Patience Precipitates Peace The trials and tribulations the world brings can bring individuals into a
state of disarray. The oft asked question is simply, "Why?". Why must these tragedies happen and
why must society have to suffer. No one is immune from this question. Even David wrote in the
13th chapter of Psalms, How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide
Your face from me?" (New King James Version, Ps. 13.1). Observing "Peace", it is evident that
Gerard Manley Hopkins is having a short period of questioning. Yet, in "Peace", Hopkins brings the
reader through his theologically ramified dialogue with Peace, which at first characterized by
confusion of its work, eventually becomes characterized with comfort and assurance as he
recognizes that he has developed Patience in his wait and Peace still cares for and transforms the
believer. Hopkins' dialogue is not with a man but with the abstract concept of Peace, thus
personifying it. Hopkins writes in the first line, "When will you ever, Peace, wild wooddove, shy
wings shut,..." (1). This apostrophe creates two effects. The first effect is that Hopkins has now set
up the reader for an interesting discourse for the rest of the poem. The second effect the apostrophe
creates is that it allows Hopkins to vent to Peace as if it was an actual human. In addition to
personifying Peace, Hopkins interweaves two metaphors in the first two lines. The poem reads,
"When will you ever, Peace, wild

Kim gives a vivid picture of the complexities in India under British rule. It shows the life of the

produced a report entitled, "Leadership and America's Future in Space." (Ride). After Dr. Ride left
NASA, she became a teacher; a professor actually. She wanted to make sure that students knew and
got to love space just as much, if not more, as she did. As a Physics professor, in 1989 Ride joined
the faculty at the University of California, San Diego. She is also the Director of the California
Space Institute at the university. Ride's favorite subjects were always science and math, making
NASA and teaching perfect careers for her; something she loved to do day in and out. Ride went on
to write several books, a couple of them being aimed towards children. She wanted people to hear
her side of the story –not often told– the part seen from space. She wrote to children to get them
interested in learning about the solar system and beyond. She wrote to adults for entertainment and
to share her story to show the world and beyond. She wanted to share the "woman's side of space."
Sally believes that one day children could go into space, but it might take a while because children
in outer space would require patience and discipline, the children would have to listen to everything
that they are told. They would also have to know what to do in case something were to ever

The Phantom Tollbooth Quotes
Have you ever read the Phantom Tollbooth? It is a book written by Norton Juster, of The Dot and
the Line. One of his most famous quotes is, ¨You can swim all day in the Sea of Knowledge and still
come out completely dry. Most people do.¨ The Phantom Tollbooth is about a boy named Milo, who
doesn't know what to do with his life until a mysterious package in his room appears when he walks
home from school. When he drives through the ¨phantom tollbooth,¨ he discovers wonders beyond
his imagination. These are three times he has changed in the story. The first quote I found in the
book where Milo changed was on page 20 when Milo wasn thinking and was actually enjoying
himself, where you can see the quote, ¨The road dipped into a broad green valley

My Proposed Potential Annual Sporting Event

  • 1. My Proposed Potential Annual Sporting Event Event/Site Selection After examining the possibilities, my proposed potential annual sporting event is a 3v3 Basketball Tournament that would take place on Xavier's campus in the Cintas Center. This tournament would take place on a Saturday in December of each year in the Cintas Center. The participants for this tournament would include kids and adults ages 7–22. In order to accumulate money towards the scholarship fund, registration will cost $5/$10 and food and drinks will be available for purchase. No exact date of this event can be determined due to possible men's and women's basketball home games, but theoretically one Saturday in this month is available. As I stated beforehand this event will be open to kids and adults ages 7–22. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to help raise money in addition to registration fees, food and drinks will be available for purchase in the Joseph Club. An executive summary of the event would appear as follows: Attention Xavier Fans of all ages! Be sure to mark your calendars for December 3rd, 2016! The Xavier Department of Sports Studies in partnership with Xavier Athletics is pleased to host a 3v3 tournament in an effort to raise money for a newly created undergraduate scholarship program. The aim of this event is help raise money for a scholarship fund, and I believe we will be able to make that happen. Through a combination of registration funds, donations, and food/drinks available this event will be profitable and beneficial to the Xavier Department of Sports Studies and would work in the future. Departmentalization of Event When it comes to the work necessary to help make this proposed event succeed, we will need assistance from various departments. Departments needed for this event to be successful include: logistics/operations, marketing, and finance. Each of these departments will have major roles that will contribute to the success and eventual reiteration of this program the next year. As stated in class, this event is meant to be run by students with help from the professor. In a typical classroom setting like the one at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Personal Narrative: A Day At St. Xavier High School "Have a good day and enjoy the experience," Mrs. Rumpke said to her son Pete and I as she dropped us off at the front of the school by the statue of St. Francis Xavier. The cool morning but apparent good October weather made it feel as if it'd be a good day. The large black man stood smiling and welcomed us with open arms as we walked into the building much before school that day was set to start, and as he motioned us into a conference room he said, "Welcome to St. Xavier High School, please be seated and we'll start soon once just about everyone gets here." And after sitting down anywhere we liked, because the Rumpke's seemed to arrive early at places, waited for the other kids to roll in. Once they had all arrived, Pete and I sat talking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the math class at Moeller I remember going over rules like the transitive and reflex properties that were just review to me since I had learned much of it in junior high. The curriculum to this point I thought was already better despite the fact that a lot of kids didn't even pay attention to this specific teacher. After Algebra was over, Elijah had a free bell and I really got to see the campus more. We went to see the weight room and the downstairs lockers that he said people called "The Cockpit," even though to this day I have not heard it referred to as such. "Where else do you want to go," Elijah asked. "I don't know what else is there to see?" I responded. We then went on to wonder aimlessly outside to look at the stadium, although I'm not sure we were allowed to go to that part of campus, but it was worth it. Through my consideration of St. X relatively forced upon me by my good friend Pete's family, seeing the campus, especially the stadium towards the end of the day was one of the biggest highlights of my shadowing day. Finally, the last class we had of the day was Modern World history where the teacher had me take a quiz part of which entailed constitutional monarchy which I was confused on, but see that it should've been easier to break down and think ... • 5. The Special Years ( 1907 And 1908 ) The Special Years (1907 and 1908) Between having won a financially lucrative lawsuit against the owners of the Mineral Springs Hotel and Bathhouse, plus getting paid for still working there, and now collecting a monthly pension, Charles is able to purchase a lot and a half for $150 ($4,000 in 2017). He is undeniably enthusiastic as he hires men to build the first house that he and Elizabeth have ever owned. And what a location. Near the end of a dead–end street, it is only a one block walk to church and a three block walk to work. As August of 1907 arrives, the Okawville newspaper announces that "Charles Lorne's new residence was nearing completion." In September he and his family move into his new residence at 804–06 North Nashville ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What a feeling of relief and of satisfaction when he receives word on December 5 that he has won again. His pension is to be increased to $8.00 ($210 in 2017) a month. Earning a pension that brings in $96 ($2,500) a year is a significant increase in the income of Charles when the average worker only makes $.22 an hour. (L141) Charles and Elizabeth now have two more members in their family. Their first grandchild, Charlie Koehler, is born in East St. Louis back in 1903 and their second and third grandchildren, Grace and Irene Hall, are born in 1906 and 1907. Now, in 1908, they add two more grandchildren with the births of Orval Koehler and Charlie Hall. Unfortunately, they all live in East St. Louis and therefore Charles and Elizabeth are unable to see them on a regular basis. They are helped by the recent addition of a $1.25 ($34 in 2017) round trip train ticket that can be purchased on Sundays. Charles is a member of the Okawville Post 582 in the Grand Army of the Republic. This is a fraternal organization of veterans who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. This entails sometimes wearing military–style uniforms at various functions. In 1908, he is proud to learn that he is being promoted to the rank of Aide–de–Camp to the Commander of the Post. • 7. The Design and Architecture of Sacred Sites Introduction: Hypothesis– "The design of sacred sites facilitates rituals and reflects an approach to the divine." The design and architecture of sacred sites, is considered to be a highly important aspect in the correct functioning of rituals that take place within, namely two main world religions: Christianity/Catholicism and Judaism. "Christianity has a close relationship with Judaism, both historically and theologically. Jesus, the twelve disciples, the author of most of the New Testament and the members of the earliest Christian churches were all Jews. Jesus' family also followed Jewish customs and Jesus frequently quoted the Hebrew Bible. Followers of Jesus believe him to be the Messiah which was a figure predicted in the Jewish Bible."(Religion Facts, 2014) Rituals through both these religions help the participant gain a sense of closeness to their divine being and aid their faith in ways such meditation, prayer, reflection and celebration. This report will aim to explain how these sacred sites are designed in order to facilitate rituals and reflect a persons experience and closeness with the divine as they partake in the sacred rituals of their religion. Methods of research (primary/secondary sources): On the 27th March 2014, St Augustine's visited St Stephens Cathedral and the Brisbane City Synagogue. • 9. Landfill Fire Threatens Nuclear Waste Site Outside St. Louis Later the EPA admitted that people who work at the West Lake Landfill have to be cautious and careful to protect their health. According to Veronica LaCapra's report, "Landfill Fire Threatens Nuclear Waste Site Outside St. Louis." if the Westlake Landfill's soil is disarranged, "radioactive dust particles could be released into the atmosphere." Unfortunately, it may lead to the inhalation of airborne radioactive dust particles. If these particles are inhaled by workers it could seriously harm their health. The EPA suggested that continued monitoring is advised and necessary, due to possible elevated levels of radon in the air at the landfill and the surrounding area. It seems full safety processes must be put into place to reduce harmful dusting to protect everyone from potential exposure during any cleanups. Even though the residents of North St. Louis, the EPA and other authorities have their points of view, further serious claims continue to be revealed. An oppositional statement using government records and the EPA 's data was reported by Véronique LaCapra just recently. In the article "Confused about Bridgeton, West Lake landfills? Here 's what you should know," published on October 20, 2015 on the KWMU 's website, states that there were reports about high level of radiation found in residential areas and trees. In addition, a second report was released about the Wilfong family who lives in Bridgeton, MO within smelling distance of the landfill. The family raised ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout my years at Xavier and beyond I intend to follow the Xavier Honor Code so I can become a cooperative and responsible person. By being a student at Xavier I notice I will have to take responsibility of my actions and faults. In order for Xavier to trust me and to allow me to continue attending their school, I will have to follow their rules and be respectful. By being honorable I will have to be truthful, honest, and, respectful throughout any situation. This means I will have to be straightforward dealing with my academics, personal life at Xavier, and campus life. I will have to take responsibility of my actions and choices. My actions at Xavier will determine whom I will become and what I am going to do with my life. Trust at Xavier is a very important issue. In order for Xavier to trust me I have to have trust in others and myself. Xavier has to trust me from the day I enter their school until the day of graduate. Honesty is the key to trust for it will set me free from cheating, lying , Ganier 2 and being immoral. Also, I have to choose whom I become friends with because if I don't trust them I will get into bad situations. I should have a close relationship with Xavier and myself so I can become trustful. Xavier's Honor System will give me an opportunity to endure in many experiences. Even if the experiences are good or bad it will give me a chance to learn from my mistakes. By experiencing things I can learn more about myself. In college I have the freedom to do anything I want, but I shouldn't take it lightly. The honor code will teach me not to have too much freedom and how to manage my time. Life at Xavier is going to be fun, but I have to be mature. Maturity is also a goal I must reach while attending Xavier. I have to be mature about things in order to be treated as a young adult. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This would authorize the people of the territory to form a constitution and a state government and this was the goal they hoped to achieve. They also set out for the admission of the territory to be in the Union and on equal footing with the original states. By 1819, Congress was considering allowing legislation. This would authorize Missouri to frame a constitution for the state. Missouri wanted admission from the Union and the Northern states opposed it. They felt as if the Southern states that were slaveholding had too much power already. Also, the Constitution allowed states to count each slave as three–fifths of a person. They determined population with these numbers which raised the amount of Congressional representatives the state could have. Thus, the South had an advantage in Congress. After the first petition was applied, a debate occurred over the government's right to restrict slavery. Since popular support in northern states for the restriction of slavery remained high, northern politicians had strong incentives to oppose the admission of any new states with slavery (Forbes, 2007). The Missouri Compromise came about in 1820. It was an effort for the Senate and House of Representatives to seek a balance of power between the slave states and the Free states. After a debate, the Missouri Compromise was passed in February of 1821. This served notice to the North that Southerners did not want slavery to end and they wanted to expand it. Because of the ... The Ceiling Art of Pozzo's Triumph of Sain Ignatius of... #######poorly written######Pozzo's Triumph of Saint Ignatius of Loyola is on the ceiling of the Church of Sant'Ignazio in Rome, and was painted from 1685–1694. It is approximately 56 feet by 115 feet across the ceiling, and uses a quadratura perspective to create an almost three dimensional effect. While the effect makes the center look much higher, it is actually painted on an arched ceiling called a barrel vault. This is a fresco painting, a type of coloring that made the painting integral to the construction of the building or item. Inside the Church of Sant'Ignazio, there is a single white tile indicating where the viewer is intended to stand to truly appreciate Pozzo's work. The scene illustrates many different saints and other highly viewed people, all ascending towards the sky. There is also allegorical figures of the 4 continents (America, Europe, Africa, and Asia) attached to the side of the buildings windows at the base of the painting. The scene is filled with cherubs that seem to be aiding the continents and saints. At the center of the painting, Saint Ignatius is following Christ into heaven, with beams of light coming from his body towards the four continents. The arches at the ends of the painting also add to the illusion that the center of the painting is much higher than the rest of it. Saint Francis Xavier is also shown in the work ascending towards the heavens. Context In the 1600s, Rome was becoming one of the cultural hotspots in Italy. During the ... The Floppy Drive in a Musical Context Essay 1.1 Mechanism of a "musical" floppy drive The floppy drive itself is musical in a certain way depending on what people may perceive as musical such as the sound of friction. In my project, the floppy drive makes sounds through pitched notes due to friction between the read–write head and the diskette. It produces notes since the diskette has contact friction with read write head, in revolution. Recall that sine waves can be viewed as the progression of a circle over time, or a revolution. Spinning at higher speeds increases the pitch and also the frequency. The spindle motor spins the floppy drive at a certain speed controlled by the microcontroller. In resume, we produce sound by using a floppy drive, a computer and a microcontroller. Simply convert properly and if there is contact between the read write head and the diskette itself, it will produce an audible pitch. 1.2 The use of floppy drive music in musical context Floppy music is quite good to listen to in my opinion. However, some might consider it as not musical due its lack of musical characteristic as the floppy drive was not invented to be a musical instrument but a disk reader. It also does not make any musical association with most people since floppy drives are associated with computers and electronics. The contexts where this type of instrument might be considered "musical" in my opinion would be the internet, a creative project and certain performances. It has never been used formally as an instrument, however, due to the tesla coils success in concerts, I speculate that introducing floppy drive music would be a success since most YouTube videos with a musical floppy drive have pretty high number of views and critics have been grateful the singing tesla coils. After few minutes of ice breaker, everyone continued with their works. After roaming for some time and helping some children with their work, I saw a little boy in the middle of the hall. His feet was covered with a blanket. He seemed confused. I went to him and asked if he had any problems. Casino gambling was outlawed in the early 1900's before being legalized in Nevada and the city of Las Vegas in 1931. In 1978, gambling was legalized in Atlantic City, New Jersey (casino–history.org). Las Vegas continues to dominate as the number one casino destination. Atlantic City and New Jersey have taken a hit as completion in surrounding states increases every year. Literary Devices In Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth Norton Juster's book, The Phantom Tollbooth successfully used different types of literary devices to introduce the main theme of the novel which was the importance of education. Juster told the story of a boy named Milo who was described as, "...a boy... who didn't know what to do with himself– not just sometimes, but always" (1961, p. 9). Milo was very indecisive and overall, he leads a pretty boring and uneventful life. However, all of that changed when he came home from school one day and noticed a mysterious tollbooth in his bedroom. The tollbooth made him start to realize the value of education and the importance of enjoying what was going on in his day to day life. The literary devices Juster chose to use in his writing increased the quality of his work and they also helped allow him to engage his readers in what they were reading more. Juster uses a wide variety of different types of literary devices throughout the entire story but three of the most common are irony, puns, and allegory. One of the most ironic moments in the book is when Milo, Tock, and Humbug enter the Valley of Sound on their way to Digitopolis. From the time they entered the valley it is obvious that something was missing. Juster wrote, "at first it was difficult to tell just what had changed– it all looked the same and it all smelled the same– but for some reason, nothing sounded the same" (1961, p. 144). • 41. Wainwright Building The relationship between "form" and "function" had always been the core of Sullivan's career. In his point of view, anything, whether it is organic or inorganic, could be deemed as the representation of its content and function, and every particular function has developed its own form. Sullivan explain this idea by illustrating oak tree in his Kindergarten Charts, he wrote, "generally speaking outer appearances resemble inner purposes. For instances, the form, oak tree, resembles and expresses the function or purpose, oak" (Sullivan, Kindergarten chats). Many qualities however though play into obtaining this presence. A lot of Europeans that came to the new world did not possess these many qualities to understand the Indians. As a Jesuit myself who is a part of the New France mission I do know on a first hand basis what it takes to be a good missionary. As a part of the New France mission I have experienced various encounters with several different Indian nations. The purpose of are mission to New France was to spread the word of God and our Catholic faith to the natives and convert them. This process is much easier said than it is to actually be done. • 53. Saint Ignatius Of Loyola Personal Writings The book, Saint Ignatius of Loyola Personal Writings, was translated by Joseph A. Munitiz and Philip Endean and first published in 1996. This book contains many aspects of St. Ignatius' life, from his reminiscences to his spiritual exercises. Inigo Lopez de Loyola was born in 1491 in Spain, the youngest of 13 children. Inigo became a soldier at the age of 18 and began to refer to himself at Ignatius. Ignatius becomes a man obsessed with his image and a life of luxury until his conversion into a devout catholic. Saint Ignatius of Loyola Personal Writings tells the story of St. Ignatius' early life obsessed with his image, and his transformation into his ultimate obsession with living a life dedicated to Christ, that I believe may have interfered with his growing relationship with God. St. Ignatius lived his life in vain. He was too concerned with his outward appearance, and his reputation among others. In battle, his legs were badly injured. Even through the excruciating pain, he made an effort to show no outer sign of discomfort. When his legs had healed, one leg was left with an unsightly misconfiguration from the healing of the bones. He underwent another, even more, painful surgery to fix his outer appearance. During his long recovery, St. Ignatius read about the life of Christ and the saints. As he learned more about the holy lives of the saints, St. Ignatius was converted and was determined to live a life the way Christ and the saints did. After St. Ignatius was ... St. Francis Xavier Research Paper St. Francis Xavier Born in the Castle of Xavier near Sanguesa, in Navarre, 7 April, 1506; died on the Island of Sancian near the coast of China, 2 December, 1552. In 1525, having completed a preliminary course of studies in his own country, Francis Xavier went to Paris, where he entered the collège de Sainte–Barbe. Here he met the Savoyard, Pierre Favre, and a warm personal friendship sprang up between them. It was at this same college that St. Ignatius Loyola, who was already planning the foundation of the Society of Jesus , resided for a time as a guest in 1529. He soon won the confidence of the two young men; first Favre and later Xavier offered themselves with him in the formation of the Society. Four others, Lainez, Salmerón, Rodríguez, ... Certain disagreements between the superior who had been left in charge of the missions, and the rector of the college, had to be adjusted. This, however, being arranged, Xavier turned his thoughts to China, and began to plan an expedition there. During his stay in Japan he had heard much of the Celestial Empire, and though he probably had not formed a proper estimate of his extent and greatness, he nevertheless understood how wide a field it afforded for the spread of the light of the Gospel. With the help of friends he arranged a commission or embassy the Sovereign of China, obtained from the Viceroy of India the appointment of ambassador, and in April, 1552, he left Goa. At Malacca the party encountered difficulties because the influential Portuguese disapproved of the expedition, but Xavier knew how to overcome this opposition, and in the autumn he arrived in a Portuguese vessel at the small island of Sancian near the coast of China. While planning the best means for reaching the mainland, he was taken ill, and as the movement of the vessel seemed to aggravate his condition, he was removed to the land, where a rude hut had been built to shelter him. For two years, I attended Maryville University in St. Louis with a triple major in English, psychology, and sociology. Maryville University's campus was small with just three small academic buildings on campus. As I progressed from my freshman to my sophomore year, I realized I had outgrown the small campus that had once felt comfortable. With only one key faculty member in each of my major departments, the classes had become predictable. When the spring of my sophomore year arrived, I decided to transfer to Webster University where I could learn from a larger faculty with varied points of view. Although I did not spend all four years of my undergraduate career at Webster University, I have great affection for it. The campus was a mix of recently constructed academic buildings and repurposed historical homes in the St. Louis suburb of Webster Groves, including the English department's home: Pearson House. The amalgamation of buildings added a sense of both the past and the future to the university's campus; however, as a student, I was unaware of the history behind the campus I grew to love. Coincidentally, Webster University is celebrating its centennial this academic year. • 63. Compare And Contrast The Garden Of Love And Harwood Compare the techniques that the poets you studied this year use to explore the idea that truly significant battles are fought within oneself. Differences in people's opinions can cause major conflicts, however fighting against one's own opposing beliefs can be tougher to resolve. Poets William Blake, G.M. Hopkins and Gwen Harwood have produced various poems epitomising how these internal struggles can become quite detrimental. Despite the differences in time periods and their varying cultural backgrounds, they all convey deep messages about the struggles with worshipping their faith or religion, handling ideas surrounding mortality and dealing with life's regrets formed by adverse situations. Both Gerald Manley Hopkins and William Blake explore the conflicts between one's opinions and the faith which they devoutly believe. The poems The Garden of Love and Hopkins' Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord each show the persona doubting the philosophical qualms of life surrounding Catholicism and whether spending "life upon thy cause," is meaningful. As a child, Blake read the Bible to enhance his reading skills, however developed views correlating to the Swedenborgian church which holds the Catholic church's views without the institutionalised feeling which Blake despised of in Catholicism. The Garden of Love intertwines his beliefs into the poetry, as depicted with the strong imagery between the vibrant childhood memory of the surroundings in comparison to the older man's views. The subject involved was a computer based rat. The rat was trained in a Skinner box to bar press under each a continuous reinforcement schedule and a partial reinforcement schedule. Extinction of both schedules was done and times were reported. The hypothesis was that a rat under a partial reinforcement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But the rat still makes an effort to try and see if bar pressing will end in a reward. Continuous reinforcement extinguishes faster because the animal has always been reinforced and has never been lead to believe that the next bar press might not produce a reward, and during extinction, it gives up quickly. Method Apparatus The equipment used to carry out this experiment was a computer based program located on the St. Francis Xavier University server. The program called "Sniffy– The Virtual Rat" generated the realistic responses of a rat. This program allowed experimenters to humanely learn about rats and their behaviours when placed in a Skinner box. This program simulated what a typical rat would do on a typical day in a Skinner box. Procedure After accessing the computer program on St. Francis Xavier's server, the virtual rat (the subject) was shown to be wandering around the Skinner box. During the first project, the experimenter observes Sniffy's behaviour. This rat is untrained and had to previous testing or training. For the first 10 minutes, the experimenter observed Sniffy's behaviour and becomes familiar with the rats' repertoire of behaviour. These behaviours are referred to as baseline behaviours. After observational behaviour, the baseline frequency of bar pressing per minutes is established. The cumulative record displayed on the screen shows ticks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The poem, God's Grandeur by Gerard Manley Hopkins is an Italian sonnet, which closely follows the traditional Italian rhyme of ABBAABBA, and then CDCDCD. (Shmoop) There are also several words throughout the poem that rhyme within themselves. For example God, rod, trod, shod all rhyme. Gerard Hopkins liked to use sprung rhythm in which the stressed and unstressed syllables have a complicated relationship, and the message desired from the reader can change the rhythm. (Shmoop) Sprung rhythm allows each person to read the poem differently and take away what they wish. The speaker of this poem has lost faith in humanity and their treatment of the world God had granted us. However, in the second half of the poem, the speaker shows his views of the world and its connection to God. In the first stanza of God's Grandeur, the speaker is amazed at the greatness of God. However, he is dismayed by the way people treat God's creation. God himself directed humans to care for their world. Genesis 2:15 says, "The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." (Genesis) Mankind's treatment of the Earth obviously did not measure up to the standard that the speaker has envisioned. This is clearly visible in lines four through seven, "Why do men then now not reck his rod? Generations have trod, have trod, have trod; and all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil; and wears man's smudge and shares man's smell." (God's) The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. `` Peace `` By Gerard Manley Hopkins Patience Precipitates Peace The trials and tribulations the world brings can bring individuals into a state of disarray. The oft asked question is simply, "Why?". Why must these tragedies happen and why must society have to suffer. No one is immune from this question. Even David wrote in the 13th chapter of Psalms, How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?" (New King James Version, Ps. 13.1). Observing "Peace", it is evident that Gerard Manley Hopkins is having a short period of questioning. Yet, in "Peace", Hopkins brings the reader through his theologically ramified dialogue with Peace, which at first characterized by confusion of its work, eventually becomes characterized with comfort and assurance as he recognizes that he has developed Patience in his wait and Peace still cares for and transforms the believer. Hopkins' dialogue is not with a man but with the abstract concept of Peace, thus personifying it. Hopkins writes in the first line, "When will you ever, Peace, wild wooddove, shy wings shut,..." (1). This apostrophe creates two effects. The first effect is that Hopkins has now set up the reader for an interesting discourse for the rest of the poem. The second effect the apostrophe creates is that it allows Hopkins to vent to Peace as if it was an actual human. In addition to personifying Peace, Hopkins interweaves two metaphors in the first two lines. The poem reads, "When will you ever, Peace, wild ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
