1. Voice-Over Industry: A Must in Today’s Arts World
It was not that many decades ago those films were mute. Actors and actresses would act and the
audience would just understand the meaning of their movements or even what they were saying to
each other. While virtually no one makes silent films anymore, the art of combining voice and acting
together is still alive and well. In fact, it is an important part of making movies, documentaries, or
providing voice-over translation services.
Why is voice over needed? Because it would be a false assumption to think that the person watching or
listening to film or broadcast speaks the same languages as the person speaking the words on the other
side. Imagine you are making a television documentary about World War II. As part of the filming, you
would interview two ageing soldiers, one German and one French, to get their memories of the hard
battles fought.
It would be presumptuous to assume that the German audience would understand the French, or the
French audience would understand German, or anyone in the United States or United Kingdom would
understand either French or German. That’s when you would need German voice-over and French
voice-overs to make sure all audiences, regardless of nationality or their linguistic skills, would truly
understand the sacrifices made by all. But how would a film maker or documentary producer access
such skills? She or he would need to hire voice-over talents, people who not only speak the required
languages but also have good voice and perhaps are good actors.
If you think any of that is frivolous or skills that just about anyone on the street can imitate, think Beauty
and the Beast or Lady and the Tramp. Or Shark. Now, take out Jerry Orbach, Peggy Lee, or Eddie
Murphy. For a second, put yourself or someone close to you in the position of Orbach or Peggy Lee, and
the moves would probably seem laughable to you. Providing voice-over services is a professional,
specific, hard-to-come-by and yet much-in-demand. It is not just anyone who can do it. When you need
it, you need to find companies that can provide them.
