Timeline
1924 - The Society for Human Rights is founded by Henry Gerber in Chicago. It is
the first documented gay rights organization.
June 28, 1969 - annual observance of Protests and demonstrations , and it later
becomes known as the impetus for the gay civil rights movement in the United States.
June 28, 1970 - Community members in New York City march through the local
streets to recognize the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall riots. This event is
named Christopher Street Liberation Day, and is now considered the first gay pride
parade.
January 1, 1973 - Maryland becomes the first state to statutorily ban same-sex
marriage.
January 14, 1975 - The first federal gay rights bill is introduced to address
discrimination based on sexual orientation. The bill later goes to the Judiciary Committee
but is never brought for consideration.
November 30, 1993 - President Bill Clinton signs a military policy directive that
prohibits openly gay and lesbian Americans from serving in the military, but also

Supreme Court reversed the July 2009 ruling of the Delhi High Court
decriminalizing gay sex between consenting adults in private.
Section 377 of the Indian penal code (IPC), of the Indian Constitution reads
that “whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of
nature with any man , women or animal , shall be punished with
imprisonment for life , or with imprisonment of either description for a
term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.”
Gay rights activists argue that Section 377 violates articles 14, 15, 19 and 21
of the Indian Constitution, which guarantee equality, freedom of expression and
personal liberty to its all citizens.
