1.17 Determining the Presence of Ions in a Solution
Purpose:
The purpose of this lab was to figure out what the unknown substance contained.
Question:
What is the unknown substance, and will it react with the given solutions?
Hypothesis:
If the known solutions we have are added to the unknown substance, then the new substance will have
a reaction because of the energy that will be created when the substances are mixed together.
Materials:
Eye protection
Silver nitrate solution, AgNoO3 (aq)
Barium nitrate solution, Ba(NO3)2 (aq)
Zinc nitrate solution, Zn(NO3)2 (aq)
3 eyedroppers
Centrifuge
Solution containing unidentified ions
Test-tub rack
Centrifuge
Procedure:
Chemical #1 Zn(NO3)2 = No reaction
Chemical #2 Ba(NO3)2 = Turns white/cloudy
Chemical #3 AgNo3 = Looks chunky/crystal like substance
Analysis:
Ba(NO3)2+Na2SO4BaSO4+NaNO3
AgNO3+NaClAgCl+NaNO3
