2. Facial Pain
Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional
caused by actual or potential tissue damage,
or described in terms of such damage.
There are typical and atypical facial pain.
3. Typical Facial Pain
Trigeminal Neuralgia:
Most common Neurological cause of facial pain. It
is an excruciating condition affecting mainly
the > 50 years.
Symptoms:
It presents as a shooting electric shock of pain of
rapid onset and short duration which is often
stimulated by touching a trigger point in the
distribution of the V Nerve.
4. Typical Facial Pain
Trigeminal Neuralgia:
Patient under the age 50 years with cranial Nerve
Neuralgia require full neurological Examination
(Tumor)
Treatment:
Local Anaesthesia is useful both therapeutically
and diagnostically. Injection of L.A.
(Carbamezine) can break pain cycles.
Tegretol tablets 200mg xBDx 10 days
5. Typical Facial Pain
Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia:
A similar condition to trigeminal
Neuralgia but less common
Symptoms:
Sharp shooting pain on swallowing
Treatment:
Tegretol tablets 200mg x BD x 10 days

7. Atypical Facial Pain
Migraine:
Periodic Migrainous Neuralgia (cluster headache)
Symptoms:
Periodic attacks of severe, unilateral paine, boring or
burning in character, lasting 30-60 min, located
around the eye, associated with Nausea, vomiting
and photophobia.
Treatment:
NSAID drugs, ergotamine and intranasal lidocaine
8. Atypical Facial Pain
Temporal Arteritis: (Cranial Arteritis)
A condition affecting older age groups
Symptoms:
Severe ache pain is localized to the temporal
and front regions. Major complication is
involvement of retinal arteries, with sudden
loss of vision.
Treatment:
Aim is to relieve pian and prevent blindness
(Prednisolone)
9. Atypical Facial Pain
Myocardia Infarction and Angina:
May on occasion radiate to the Jaws.
Pain associated with Herpes Zoster:
Glaucoma:
Severe unilat. Pain with tense, stonyhard globe
(referre to Ophthalmologist)
Oral dysaesthesia:(Burning Mouth Symptom)
Bell´s Palsy:
Pain around the Ear often radiating to the Jaw
