As a result of this
information; 40% choose
Indie/alternative as their We watched
preferred music choice. ‘indie/alternative’ music
channels to get a grasp of real
media products- channels like
NME and Kerrang! TV was the
underlying inspiration for me.
My ability to research into
real life media texts was
extremely helpful as I was
able to physically watch
each video and analyze my
favourite and least favourite
parts.
3. Annotated popular NME video
The close up at the very
beginning of the video
offers an exciting and
intimate opening.
It then shows a different
point of view on the
main character in a
different shot- this gives
it complex depth. An overview shot of the
scene gives an
establishing
understanding to the
audience.
4. The action of the video
shows a clear narrative
and exciting story for
the audience to follow.
The establish shot shows the
scene and heightens the
narrative further –
maintaining the interest of
the audience.
This shot offers a
variety of ways to look
at the picture.
5. The close up shot of the
phone shows the
narrative and gives us a
wide range of different
angles to view.
The main character singing
directly into the camera at
the forefront of the picture is
something we will definitely
take on board as it addresses
the audience.
The video has a clear
ending to the narrative
when the main character
finally makes it to the
band practice- this gives
an overall finish to the
video.
6. What did this teach us?
By researching real media products
and annotating this video in
detail we found some key
elements that were important to
take on board for our video;
-an interesting narrative
-a main character to sing direct to
the camera
-numerous different angles to view
the video
7. Birdy – Skinny Love
- We chose the current hit
song from a young artist
‘Birdy-skinny Love’ that was
one of the most played songs
on NME TV in 2011.
- To develop an underlying
motivation for the story I
annotated the lyrics and
used internet explorer to
research the meaning of the
lyrics, this was a useful
exercise for me as it gave me
a narrative to stick to.
8. Our annotation
The underlying meaning of the
lyrics was the idea that the love is
‘dying away’.
Its the story of a broken heart
were all the ‘strings are cut away’.
-This was a useful exercise for me
as it gave me a narrative to stick
to. After doing this I was able to
have a step by step guide and I
created a storyboard of events for
filming.
-We created generic conventions of
real media text as we had a linear
narrative with a ‘typical girl/boy’
story/.
