Education – Expected marks

Hostel Life
• First to complete the submission so popular & in demand
• Not joined classes, will get the notes-in exchange of submission?
• Developed liking in mechanical drawing & design
• Developed methodology of self study, preparing time table, and
backward planning for examination
• At Hostel
• Whistle blower for corruption at mess, commission was paid while
purchasing oil, coal, grain, etc
• Successfully ran the mess, cost from Rs 3.25 to Rs 2.70 per meal
• Stayed at HND, Engg hostel and SS Jain Hostel (Now Firodiya)

Engineering
• 5 exam papers in just a week, 20 hrs of study w/o much sleep
• Study 4 revisions, most important was of a last day & last minute
• Weekly Monday 9:0 am test, full night study from Sunday evening
• Post test, sleep for a while & have a food, go to matinee movie
• Come back & sleep, have a dinner and go for movie or drama
• A day when morning, matinee and evening movies were watched!
• Study hard, party hard!!!

Engineering

Service
• 1st opportunity at Backau Wolf, 23rd Aug 1983 as design engineer
• Final interview by Mr. Dara Damania, Managing Director then
• Salary was Rs 1000 pm plus 20% bonus yearly, was a huge!
• Saving as much possible, Proud to send money to parents
• Worked from 1983 till 91, to build a strong foundation
• Huge learning in Designing, Structural analysis, Computer aided
drawing, Programming, Autolisp and FEA
• Designed world’s 1st in its kind wagon loader (NMDC, Bailadila)

Service
• Wonderful motivation by Mr.Karmarkar & guidance by Mr.Sur
• Booked a 2 BR flat in ’87 in Aundh, salary just sufficient for EMI &
running home, could not buy 2-wheeler till 1997
• Tremendous joy of purchasing a radio
• Later Mukand, back to Backau Wolf (now Krupp), Virgo Engineers
• Observed Mr.Damania working closely at Krupp, extremely sharp,
having huge control, nothing less than a King!
• Exposure to Mumbai & equity share market…- a curse for me!
• Virgo offered (or I grabbed) an opportunity to work in BaaN, ERP

Writing
• Developed another passion…
• Thinking..consolidation and writing about social issues & problem
with suggestions and solutions (e.g. UID was suggested then)
• Letters, news paper articles, posting questions, etc
• To ministers, editors, institutes, authorities and friends
• Reply received from George Fernandes, Manmohan Singh,
Pramod Mahajan, Pratap Pawar, Mohan Dharia, Shantilalji,
Prakash Jawadekar, etc

Lessons learnt during these years
• Be transparent, share critical information with close relatives
• If you share what you are doing, be sure you are not doing wrong
• Avoid bad words with top management for small issues
• Avoid money matters with relatives
• Conserve & protect money as much (home, education, marriage)
• Be ONLY an investor; after through study, don’t entertain brokers

Growth at Vertex
• Bagged a big project on first onsite assignment & executed
• Executed 300 mm fixed cost project in 8 months duration with 3
associates and 85 peak team successfully
• No looking back, every year double the salary with promotion
• Salary from 30k to 25 lacs PA in less than 5 years
• Raised from PL to PM, DM, and VP positions!
• Worked 24x7 for Delivery, Quality, HR, Recruitment, Finance, etc
• Implemented several strategic models
• Tremendous respect about Narayana Murthy, so followed Infosys
• RR knows numbers better than me…CEO
• Working like a owner & hardwork are the keys to success

Mistakes! No…Blunders
• Resigning Vertex in 2005 while reached at a top position with
hard work, that too acquisition was not far, valuation could be big
• Trusting a close fatherly friend as financer for a start up
• Believing professionals from USA for long term engagement
• Ditching by using references
• Trusting brokers and portfolio managers
• Buying penny shares of a company in huge quantity without deep
study of organisation and management

Aspirations & Constraints
• Booked two 3 BR flats at timely, turned to be the best investment
• God is great, Lotus booking just happened while morning walk
• Strongly felt a need of education guidance to students and soft
skills training to professionals, and MUST be FREE
• Later served Softbridge, joined NTT Data on request (Vertex )
• Did not support “yes sir” so victim of politics so got fired 
• 2nd inning Backau Wolf (Krupp) & Vertex (NTT data) on request

Managing a path
• Wanted to work full time and free for a social cause
• Huge preparation task ahead so decided to start full time social
activities from 18th Nov 2011, birthday of my wife!
• Starting social activities like NGO while having responsibilities??
• Decided to sell flats so as to clear loan, earn for survival & invest
• Had a consensus meeting with all family members
• Gave private loan to fetch monthly interest income
• Invested partial sum in shares (now almost zero value)

Preparation
• Created a list of 120 soft skills
• Created presentations & books on education, women
empowerment, alcohol, etc covering 35 topics
• Visited many places for guiding the students, giving speeches, etc
• Used technology to spread the content

Worked full time (2011 to 14) & free as a single person institute
