Building a professional identity Comment by Dr. J: Avoid
extra space; See APA manual section 3 for correct format of
heading. Also, consider use of headings for ease of flow and to
ensure all components of assignment are addressed.
If one needs to develop a strong foundation when building up
for their career, professional identity is critical to be developed
at this stage. This identity develops when one decides what
they want to be in future, understands the responsibility that
comes with his/her decision and then having plans that would
help him/her to achieve that (Trede, 2012). In professional
identity development, various components eventually help in
creating a successful professional. These components include
understanding professional authority, body knowledge, learning
a workplace, code of ethics, work experience, community
sanction, teamwork skills, gender, professional knowledge,
social culture, background and interactions of the profession.
Every component is vital for various reasons during
professional identity development. Comment by Dr. J: Consider

Body knowledge implies knowing how to invite through body
language. If a person has body language that appears closed off,
he/she might be seen as uninviting and this could not welcome
6. possible ties (Andrew, 2009). Having the capability to exercise
power and receive delegation well, when needed is very crucial.
This enables one to manage and to be managed as well as to
understand the expectations of work and workflow. In addition,
this helps in building significant relationships with coworkers
and the community around the working environment and thus as
a result allows team building, which can help achieve a
professional culture. Building a great relationship with the
community that one is working with is very important since
communities are put together with different demographic factors
that affect their needs. Therefore, one should carry out the
responsibility he/she accepts with discovering professional
identity with commitment and honesty. Professional identity is
affected by what one learns throughout his/her research into the
profession as well as educational work before entering it. Thus,
it is crucial to have the necessary knowledge of the
responsibilities one is taking on. This is so basic to all other
components since individuals are already aware of what is
required. Knowing the personal identity of a person allows
effective networking. Comment by Dr. J: Cite source.

In addition, professional networking affects the personal
identity of a person too. Through various ways both in person
and through online services, personal networking can be
achieved. Apart from the personal connections that one has,
professional networking allows one to other various connections
that offers a wide range of possible opportunities. For
professional development, networking is crucial for the fact that
through socialization it brings knowledge. Gathering social,
skilled and behavioral expectations from others helps in
improving on one's identity. People can change and grow with
the society to better change responsibilities with their
7. profession (Trede, 2012). Without networking, one cannot be in
a position to know what other professionals expect. In addition,
through networking experience, one is able to get feedback and
tips from other professionals while still acquiring new things
about him/her. Comment by Dr. J: Cite source. Comment by

Before or in the early start of one's career is when a
professional identity is developed. The identity flourishes
throughout the lifetime of one's professional. Developing a
professional identity is affected by many external factors, which
eventually guides an individual to a specific path of career.
Networking allows opportunities while in that career path. Since
all organizations are different, introduction too many types of
professionals helps to polish the identity one has developed. In
the professional success, professional identity and its
development are very essential. Comment by Dr. J: Cite
