Erikson Stages Of Adolescence
Identity often refers to a sort of desperate quest or a deliberately confused search through both a
mental and moral experience. However, Erikson approaches this idea as an experience that will
almost be a surprise that sneaks up on one, rather than something that can be found. The process of
identity formation is located in the core of an individual, and also in the core of ones communal
culture. This process is ever changing and developing, but reaches a crisis during the stage of
adolescence. At the earliest stage of the identity crisis there is an important need for trust in oneself
and others. Adolescents, at this stage, look passionately for ideas to place faith in, and additionally,
ideas, which seem worthwhile to prove ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Adolescents can be remarkably intolerant to peers or concepts which one may view as "different".
Erikson explains that such an intolerance to something abnormal or different may be a necessary
defense against a sense of self–identity loss. However, this may be unavoidable at a time of life
when ones body is changing its proportions drastically, and puberty is driving the body and
imagination towards new impulses. In addition to an increased interest in intimacy with the other
sex, one is confronted with too many conflicting possibilities and choices. Adolescents not only help
one another through such discomfort by forming cliques and stereotyping themselves, their ideals,
and their enemies, but also adamantly test each other's capacity for sustaining loyalties in the midst
of inevitable conflict and values. Erikson explains that adolescence is a vital regenerator in the
process of social evolution, and youth can offer loyalties and energies both to the conversation of
that which continues to feel true and to the revolutionary correction of that which has lost its
regenerative significance (Erikson, p. 255). This further explains Erikson's take on the ever–
evolving process of forming ones identity. It is throughout childhood that tentative crystallizations
of identity take place, which make the individual feel and believe some sort of identity has formed,

Erikson, Babies, By Erik Erikson And Freud 's Stages
At the age of barely being a full one year old, a lot of transitions take place when being able to
observe a baby in its environment. After watching Alana, a nine month old little girl, I was able to
see both Erikson and Freud's stages come into play. While being in her home for a week, I was able
to see and interact with her during different times of the day each on different days, which helped to
truly see and observe her actions depending on what current mood she was in the for the day. For
theorist Erik Erikson, babies are in the trust vs. mistrust stage up until the age of one. During this
stage, attachment is a factor that begins, and when they are around strangers or anyone outside of
their immediate family that they are constantly around, the true test comes into play. Their trust is
based through bonding and a connection, and if their basic needs of nourishment, physical contact,
and cleanliness are taken care of, then they put their trust in those people and generally happy. As
for the opposing side, babies can also have trust issues and be very skeptical around people and
cry/have fear when those basic needs are not met. While observing Alana, she is in a home with two
older sisters, and two loving parents, which is one thing that I saw to be a blessing because she
always had someone to play with her, tend to her needs, and just simply love her. I believe that
because of this home environment that she lives in, this makes her mistrust for strangers, such as

Erikson Identity Crisis
Erik Erikson is a figure in psychology who examined many factors about the personality. One of his
theories revolves around identity crises, which he believed countless people have gone through
during their lives in order to solidify their identity. Since his findings on this topic in the 1970s,
others have done studies on identity crises and how they affect development as well. The concept of
an identity crisis is quite important in discovering how the ego grows and identity develops, and it
has been referenced many times in popular culture. Being that it is so relevant to everyone's lives as
Erikson believes, I picked this as a topic for this paper in order to understand the concept more. In
this paper, I define Erikson's idea of identity crisis and then compare it to three other works which
revolve around the subject. Then I compare each article to Erikson, my personal experience, and
occasionally to each other in order to demonstrate how Erikson's ideas on identity crisis are valid in
a modern setting.
Identity crisis can be defined as a mental state where an individual is "easily upset by a sudden or
intense stimulus" where "their egos seems to have lost any shook–absorbing capacity" (Frager,
2013, p. 165). Furthermore, he states that these individual's "egos seemed to have lost any shock–
absorbing capacity" and their "sensory systems [are] in a constant 'startled' state" (Frager, 2013, p.
165). He coined this term while treating soldiers at Mount Zion Veterans

Psychosocial Crisis: Trust vs. Mistrust * Virtue: Hope The first stage of Erik Erikson's theory
centers on the infant's basic needs being met by the parents. The infant depends on the parents,
especially the mother, for food, sustenance, and comfort. The child's relative understanding of world
and society come from the parents and their interaction with the child. If the parents expose the child
to warmth, regularity, and dependable affection, the infant's view of the world will be one of trust.
Should the parents fail to provide a secure environment and to meet the child's basic need a sense of
mistrust will result. According to Erik ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aggressive behaviors, such as throwing objects, hitting, or yelling, are examples of observable
behaviors during this stage. Preschoolers are increasingly able to accomplish tasks on their own, and
with this growing independence comes many choices about activities to be pursued. Sometimes
children take on projects they can readily accomplish, but at other times they undertake projects that
are beyond their capabilities or that interfere with other people's plans and activities. If parents and
preschool teachers encourage and support children's efforts, while also helping them make realistic
and appropriate choices, children develop initiative– independence in planning and undertaking
activities. But if, instead, adults discourage the pursuit of independent activities or dismiss them as
silly and bothersome, children develop guilt about their needs and desires Competence: Industry vs.

Think back to your childhood and try to remember a time where you felt lost or confused about your
own sense of self, or maybe you saw others and wondered why you didn't like the same things that
they did. These moments and feelings directly relate to the psychoanalytical perspectives in
childhood today. (verywell.com/child–development–theories, "2016) This paper discusses two
major theorists who contributed a range of theories and stages to explain the psychoanalytical
development among children. Our first theorist, Sigmund Freud, ... Show more content on

Writing Assignment two: Theories Paper The psychologist Eric Erikson (1902–1904), was Freud's
student and one of the brightest and he became known for the human development theories. Erikson
created eight human's development stages. Those stages are: trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame
and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. role confusion, intimacy vs.
isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, and integrity vs. despair. These development theories are part
of everyone's life from the time they are born to the end of life. As noticed on the theories, they have
two oppositions which, usually, individuals debate within themselves between those theories. Also,
the first five stages of the eight stages of development ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the stage that Erikson stresses that adolescents "negotiating the complexities of finding one's
own identity is the primary task in adolescence." At this stage, children become adolescents who try
to figure out their personality and how they will fit to society. This is the stage after childhood and
the body is changing within hormones. According to Berger (2014), "psychosocial development
during adolescence is often considered the search for self–understanding." Their personality changes
back and forth as they try to differ from others and if they do not establish a final identity, they
become confused about themselves. Intimacy versus isolation is the sixth stage of psychosocial
development. This is the time when people look for formal relationships and tend to debate whether
they will be loved or will be lonely. Dunkel and Sefcek (2009) stress that this stage "represents the
ability to share with and commit to another, most often in the form of romantic relationships. The
psychosocial strength that can be gained in the sixth stage is love." In this case, if love is not gained,
the individual might become isolated and depressed. Erikson (1963) states the

Erikson and Personal Psychosocial Stage
Renowned psychologist Erik Erikson is best known for his theory of psychosocial stages of
personality development. Unlike Freud, Erikson's theory spans a person's entire lifespan, from
childhood to old age. One of the main elements of Erikson's psychosocial stage theory is the
development of ego identity (Cherry, 2013). Ego Identity is the conscious sense of self that we
develop through social interaction (Cherry, 2013). Erikson believed that our ego identity is
constantly changing due to new experiences and information we acquire in our daily interactions
with others (Cherry, 2013). The stages of Erikson's theory are concerned with becoming competent
in an area of life (Cherry, 2013). Erikson believed that if a stage is handled ... Show more content on

I do try to make connections when I can. My life consists most of going to the gym, bike riding or
running, work, and school. These activities keep me fairly busy, and I don't always have a lot of time
for going out. I am not really into the bar scene as I don't drink. Very shortly after I graduated with
my undergraduate degree, I was diagnosed with some serious health problems. I was hospitalized
three times before doctors arrived at an accurate diagnosis. The resulting ongoing issues with my
health sometimes inhibit the forming of meaningful relationships. Although I am shy by nature, I try
not to let this keep me from getting along and conversing with people at work and in general. It is
just that shyness is a tendency, one that I need to be aware of. I try to get outside of my comfort zone
and talk to people to form acquaintance–type relationships. Although these are not meaningful
relationships, they are the type of relationships I have with people at work, and it makes work more
pleasant to have people to talk to and converse with as I go throughout the day. Being shy, and in a
stage where I should be finding meaningful relationships is a hindrance, and could be seen as a
negative effect on the stage that I am currently in. My mother tells me that when I was very young I
was very extroverted and made a lot of friends easily. As I got older I developed a weight problem
and was overweight throughout middle school and high school. I

Comparison Of Erikson And Kohlberg's Theory
Erik Erikson and Lawrence Kohlberg are famous theorist who have contributed a lot to the nursing
profession. Erikson's theory is about psychosocial development whereas Kohlberg's theory is about
moral development. Erikson has eight stages, that he believed were accomplished at different
periods of life, in his theory of psychosocial development starting with; trust versus mistrust during
infancy; autonomy versus shame or doubt experienced at a toddler age; initiative versus inferiority
during preschool and school–aged period; identity versus identity confusion during adolescence;
intimacy versus isolation experienced as a young adult; generativity versus stagnation experienced
as a middle–aged adult; and lastly integrity versus despair ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Another stage of Erikson's theory that is similar to stages of Kohlberg's theory is identity versus
identity confusion where the adolescent learns the essence of what makes them who they are from
bringing together everything they have learnt and what kind of person they will be. Kohlberg's
stages that are similar is the conventional stage of good boy/ nice girl morality where the school–
aged child follows rules to be accepted by those around them, and the postconventional stage of
social contract orientation where the adolescent will follow society customs for the benefit of others.
These three stages are closely associated as someone's identity is usually shaped by the customs of
society. People will do what is expected of them to be accepted which in turn contributes to their
identity. The last similarity between the two theories is Erikson's stage of generativity versus
stagnation where the middle–aged adult broadens their concern from themselves to the community
and world, and Kohlberg's postconventional stage of universal ethical principles where the adult's
actions are determined by their own ethical principles and standards of behaviour. These two stages
complement each other as a person cannot have concerns for the community and world if they do
not have a sense of their own beliefs and values as a foundation. A person needs to know what they
value to then go on and have concerns that

Erikson Trust And Mistrust Essay
Erikson's first stage is developing a trust or a mistrust in this world from a very early age with the
virtue that results from this, being hope. Tate writes that we can look at this stage between infants
and their caregivers and compare them with ourselves as born again Christians and God as our
caregiver (2007). It seems to me that if you are a Christian, then the terms trust and faith are
synonymous and the result is hope.
When we first commit our lives to Christ, we have to put all of our trust into Him. We worry about
how God will meet our needs, whether it's financially, emotionally, practically, etc. We worry that
He may choose not to meet our needs to teach us a lesson, in which we insinuate that God may not
be all that loving or even evil, depending on the situation. The other side of that is becoming angry
that God is not shielding us from anything this is not good, not allowing us to prosper. If a

I am fascinated that these two disciplines lead to the same conclusion, that if there is no trust or faith
in your caregiver, serious issues with mistrust occur, which will not lead to hope. Erikson says that
there needs to be a healthy balance of trust and mistrust in order for hope to develop (Engler, 2014)
and in order for the person to be healthy and have the next stage build on foundation of the first one.
This is true of Christianity, also, because there is a distinction between basic needs and desires. We
would have to know that God will provide for our every need and the things He's promised, but the
fact that He will not be handing us what we desire is clear. In my particular case, it is not trusting
that God will take care of my needs and that He wants to do so. Having certain things happen in my
past have allowed me to distort God's image in my mind and I believe this is the reason I struggle

requirements of intimacy are not met. Feeling of depressions rises during isolation. Physical
Development During our early adulthood years our bodies are at the peak of that include our muscle

Psychoanalytic Theory Of Erik Erikson
Christina Gogh EECE 310 W Professor Rhodd 11/10/17 Erick Erickson Erik Erikson is known for
his psychoanalytic theory of psychosocial development comprising eight stages from infancy to
adulthood. Psychologist Erik Erikson, is a major contributor to developmental psychology, who
proposed a comprehensive theory of the ways that individuals develop their identity, a sense of who
they are, and society's influence on that development. Erikson stated that people go through crisis at
each stage of their lives. The stages each had a developmental task to be mastered. As an individual
resolved these various crises an individual would have a better harmony with their social
environment that they live in. If an individual could not successfully resolve a crisis, they would be"
out of step", and the individual would have a greater difficulty in their dealing with a crisis in the
future. Erikson did however recognize that an individual can develop through a stage negatively and
still go on with their life. Erikson stated that each of the psychological stages have a basic conflict
and important event leading to growth. The theory was developed from his hundreds of clinical
observations in children. Identity is central to Erikson's thinking. Erikson coined the term "identity
crisis". Erikson lived such a crisis in his own life. At a young age Erikson found out his father was
really his stepfather. Erik Homberger Erikson was born on June 15, 1902 in Frankfurt, Germany to

Erikson Developmental Stages
This paper is about a very special person in my life, who is my mom. Her parents were originally
from Canada. In 1942 during World War 2 they migrated to the United States. They moved to the
United States so my grandpa didn't have to enlist in the war due to their culture. My mom was born
five years later in 1974 in Olivet, South Dakota. According to Erikson's theory we go through eight
different development stages in life. Each stage contains continual development and growth,
meaning we develop throughout our entire lives. In this paper, we look at every stage and how did
my mom achieve or fail to achieve the tasks Erikson claims happen in each stage.
1. Trust versus mistrust (Infancy 0 –1.5)
In adulthood, we don't have recollections of this stage; however our beginnings are a very essential
starting point to our lives. During this stage it's important to develop trust, which follows people
their entire lifespan.

tons and tons of questions, which aid them in figuring out the world around them. The favorite
memory she does recall is her mom sitting each night and telling her and her brothers and sisters
bedtime stories. I am again taking the assumption that she achieved this stage with healthy

Introduction
Erikson's Developmental Stages and My Life
Erikson's first stage of development is that of infancy which focuses on the child's first 18 months of
life. During this time a child is supposed to develop optimism, trust, confidence, and security. These
key elements are developed through the love and care of a parent or primary care giver. If these
elements are not nurtured then a child is more likely to develop mistrust, insecurities, and the feeling
of worthlessness (Erikson 1968). During this stage of my own life, I can say that I received a great
deal of love and nurturing from both of my parents. Of course I do not remember this stage in my
life, but I have often heard stories about my early years. I was told that ... Show more content on

It is during this stage that family or the parents are no longer the major influence in a child's life.
Even though parents are still very important, friends and the neighborhood began to play a
significant role. A child begins to move from the comfort of being the star in the parent's eyes to
learning how to fit in and impress their peers. I can remember this being a somewhat awkward stage
for me. It was during this time in my life when I transitioned from elementary school into Junior
High. Junior High is an entirely different world from the safety of elementary school. Over one
summer, kids went from enjoying just playing together to wanting to critic the clothing and the
shoes that each other wore. I can distinctly remember the day that I realized that I was wearing
"cheap" shoes. My dad I had spent an entire Saturday shopping at Kmart for my school clothes and I
was so proud when he let me pick out a pair of pink and white, high top Jordash's with double pink
and white strings. I was so proud of my shoes and I couldn't wait to wear them on the first day of
sixth grade. I had picked out a pink and white shirt and a crisp pair of jeans. I put just enough cuff in
those jeans to make sure that my Jordashes were clearly on display. I walked around all day with my
head held high because I thought I was so cute. My bubble was bursted on the way to fifth period

Freud Vs Erikson
When you think of developmental psychology what major names come to the forefront of your
mind? Sigmund Freud? Erik Erikson? Jean Piaget? Maybe even Lev Vygotsky. There are many
theorists/theories that are heavily involved or opinionated when it comes to development. The two
that I would like to shed the most light on is Freud's psychosexual stages and Erikson's eight stages
of psychosocial development. Theories between these gentlemen could not be more different, not
only from a sexual aspect but also from an overall developmental point of view. Although both
arguments have their individual merits, Sigmund Freud continues to hold true in my mind, despite
the many criticisms that come along with his works.

Psychosocial Relation According to Erikson, personality develops in stages. These stages develop
your ego identity. Your identity refers to all the beliefs, ideals, and values that help mold and guide
your behavior. He also believed that a sense of competence motivates behaviors and your actions.
Each of Erikson's stages is concerned with becoming competent in each stage of life. Ego strength
and ego quality are what you get when you either pass or fail with these psychosocial stages. They

Despair. This is where people in late adulthood either achieve a sense of integrity of the self by
accepting the lives they have lived, and thus accept death, or yield to despair that their lives cannot
be relived. "It means accepting imperfection in the self, in parents, in children and life. Although
integrity must outweigh despair if this stage is to be resolved successfully, Erikson maintained that
some despair is inevitable. People need to mourn– not only their misfortunes and lost chances but
for the vulnerability and transience of the human condition (Papalia, 2009, 587)." Morrie was very
comfortable with death and accepted it. He still had his mornings of mourning, but he always came
out positive about everything at the end of the day. This whole book was a reflection of his life, his
thoughts, and the way he saw everything. Morrie concentrated on living instead of dying. He had a
funeral when he was still alive to celebrate his life. Morrie wanted to hear his loved ones say how
they felt when he was alive not dead. "That's what we are all looking for. A certain peace with the
idea of dying. If we know, in the end, that we can ultimately have that peace with dying, then we can

Freud Vs Erikson Essay
Freud and Erikson have similar but at the same time different ways of covering the Theories of
Development. They may be from different backgrounds, different schools, worked at different jobs,
but they both viewed development as something of importance. They both thought that they had the
correct theory, and they both thought that they new best at what was suppose to happen between the
different stages. Sigmund Freud had only five stages of development whereas Erik Erikson had
eight. Erikson went through adulthood and Freud did not. They both can make some good points in
their stages but, like any theory, there are complications or problems.

The issues that are most common with Erikson's stages are as follows, stage one, children who do
not receive adequate attention will possible develop a mistrust for the world and those around them.
Stage two, a child who can not find their sense of self worth may have a tendency to doubt
themselves often. The third stage, children have a tendency to feel guilty for things that may be out
of their control, or things that they did not do. Stage four may lead children to think that they are
incompetent. Stage five comes with the problem of not knowing self worth. Children may feel like
they are not worth anything to anyone or that they possibly can not do anything the correct way.
Now Erikson goes into having a sixth stage which, remember, Freud does not. The sixth stage
consists of three sub–stages. The first being intimacy versus isolation, the problem with this is, the
adult may end up being isolated and have a feeling that nobody want them or loves them. What is
viewed as the seventh stage, generativity versus stagnation, may lead someone to believe that they
are unproductive or that they can not do something. The final stage, stage eight, integrity vs despair,
may have someone feeling as though they did not complete anything in their life and leave them to
be slightly bitter

The Theories of Bandura versus Erikson
How does an infant develop into an adult? The answer is not as obvious as it seems. There are a
variety of factors that contribute to human development. A person not only grows physically but also
cognitively and socio–emotionally. This paper will explain two theories; one cognitive and one
socio–emotional; about human development. The two theories will be described, compared,
contrasted and individually evaluated based on the strong points and limitations. The first theory
examined is Albert Bandura's social cognitive/learning theory. A child does not automatically know
how to interpret their environment, but they can learn about the world around them and how to
manipulate their surroundings by observing people around them. According to Bandura (2002),
"Viewed from the sociocognitive perspective, human nature is characterised [sic] by a vast
potentiality that can be fashioned by direct and vicarious experience into a variety of forms within
biological limits" (pp. 271–272). Although a large amount of learning from watching other people
happens in childhood, a person can acquire new skills or knowledge at any point in their life with
the help of other people. The second theory examined is Erik Erikson's eight stages of psychosocial
development. Each stage in Erikson's theory involves a conflict/crisis that a person must work
through to evolve their personality. Rosenthal (1981) explains that, "Each stage arises because a new

Five Stages Of Eric Erikson
Eric Erikson was one of the most famous theorists of the twentieth century; he created many
theories. One of the most talked about theories is his theory of psychosocial development. This is a
theory that describes stages in which an individual should pass as they are going through life. His
theory includes nine stages all together. The original theory only included eight stages but Erikson's
wife found a ninth stage and published it after his death. The nine stages include: trust vs. mistrust,
autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. identity
confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, integrity vs. despair, and hope and
faith vs. despair (Crandell and Crandell, p.35–36)). The First stage in Erickson's theory is trust vs.
mistrust, this stage occurs during infancy, from birth to one years old. This stage is all about trust, it
is the stage where you hopefully begin to trust not only yourself but others as well (Crandell and
Crandell p. 36). An infant gains trust in infancy because they can not do anything for themselves,
they depend on others to do everything for them therefore in this stage they develop trust in others,
their caregivers, that they will do all that they can to take care of their well–being. Developing trust
in infancy is crucial because this makes the individual grow up feeling safe and secure in the world.
A positive outcome of an infant developing trust is that they grow up feeling

Erikson Human Development Theory
The human development theory that I believe best explains and gives insight into Kate's reasons for
alcoholism is Erik Erikson's Psychosocial life–span development theory, it explains human
development in eight stages and gives us insight into Kate's ongoing struggle and insight into her
problems. A reminder that Erikson makes for all those using his theory is that each one of his stages
in human development is not a set–in stone theory, but to be used as a general guide. Erikson's
explains that when one is working through the stages there will be many conflicts and opportunities.
Whether, the development is through internal work and gain, external work and gain, or plain losses,
environmental forces affect and complicate an otherwise simple pattern of progressive growth
(Nugent, p.67). Erikson believes that each crisis depends on the interactions between the individual
and the social environment as family and culture construct it. "What is won can later be lost– and
re–won" said Erickson, adding that the body is not determined by one thing, but by many things
which is great news for Kate. According to his theory, children who do not resolve their first stage of
trust vs mistrust will have problems trusting in adulthood and will have negative effects on the
dynamics of the next stage. Let's look at Kates situation, when she was an infant feeling of trust
should have been inculcated within her, but since this never occurred mistrust took place in the first
year of her life.

Erikson Psychosocial Stages
Erikson's first psychosocial stage is Trust vs Mistrust, this occurs during the first 18 months or so of
infancy. During this stage the infant look towards their providers for the stability and consistency.
Success in this first stage will lead to the sense of trust, whereas the failure at this stage will lead the
infant to develop a sense of mistrust, and may carry this mistrust the other relationships (McLeod,
2013). For example, a sense of trust can develop between a care provide during feeding and
comforting during times of need. The second stage of Erikson theory is Autonomy vs Shame/Doubt,
this occurs between the 18 months and 3 years of age. During this stage the child is being to their
independence by discovering their own skills and abilities. Success in this stage, children will
become more independent and develop more self–confidents in their abilities. However, failure may
lead the child to have feeling of being inadequate. During this stage, parents can be supportive and

their accomplishments. In stage if children are encourage reinforcing their initiative stage, they will

Erikson 's Theory On Development
From leaning objective 8.9, explains the development of the personality along with social
interpersonal skills, and the concept of the self from infancy to adulthood, I wanted to compare the
first five stages of Erikson's theory on development to Ken Wilber's first five stages of his nine
stages, that he calls spaces. The first five stages of Erikson 's theory, which he notes as crisis, are
trust versus mistrust, autonomy versus shame and doubt, initiative versus guilt, industry versus
inferiority, and identity versus role confusion. The first four "personal spaces," of Wilber 's theory
are the archaic, the magical, or egocentric, the mythical, and the rational. Erikson 's theory states
that an emotional crisis must be successfully met for normal development. Wilber 's theory is similar
in that he uses an example of a multiple story building. If one stage isn 't completely understood, but
not mastered, then that floor will end up leaning, and a building like that cannot be sustained for
long before its structural integrity is compromised. Erikson's theory is based that social interactions
were the most important thing to consider for healthy development of children. The first stage,
starting from infancy on to 1 year of age, has the crisis of trust versus mistrust. This just means that
they develop either of these skills based on how well their needs are taken care of. The next crisis
starts at 1 year of age up to 3 years of age, toddler age. This one is called autonomy

Erik Homberger Erikson was born in 1902 near Frankfort, Germany to Danish parents. Erik studied
art and a variety of languages during his school years, rather than science courses such as biology

to college he traveled around Europe, keeping a diary of his experiences. After a year of doing this,
he returned to Germany and enrolled in art school. After several years, Erickson began to teach art
and other subjects to children of Americans who had come to Vienna for Freudian training. He was
then admitted into the Vienna Psychoanalytic Institute. In 1933 he came to the U.S. and became

"Erikson's main contribution was to bridge the gap between the theories of psychoanalysis on the
problems of human development, which emphasize private emotions, and the broader social
influences that bear upon the individual. He was a strong proponent of the concept that social
environment plays a major role in the development of personality. Going beyond the of a child's
early life, Erikson concentrated on broader issues of peer culture, school environment, and cultural
values and ideals. This led him to study the period of adolescence, in which he documented the
interaction of a person's inner feelings and impulses with the world that surrounds the person."
Erikson developed eight stages of human development. Briefly I would describe all eight my I will

trust. The second stage is called the toddler stage (autonomy vs. shame and doubt). This stage occurs

that it was on him. Borg again tries to pay for the gas and the attendant tells him something's cannot

talks and laughs with Marianna, the brothers got into a discussion about god and death. The brothers
ask Borg for his opinion and he told them that he did not want to talk about it. Borg started reciting a
poem when he could not remember the rest Marianna helped him finish it. Then he tell the children
he wants to see his mother. You see in this scene the stage of generatively because he shows he cares

Theories Of Erikson
Erik Homburger Erikson (15 June 1902 – 12 May 1994) was a German–born American
developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst known for his theory on psychosocial development
of human beings. He may be most popular for inventing the phrase identity crisis. Erik Erikson is
much like Sigmund Freud, Erikson assume that personality will progress in lots of stages. But,
unlike Freud's theory of psychosexual stages because generally, Erikson's theory describes the
influences of social experiences across the whole life. Thus, there are also disagreement between
Freud's and Erikson's theory. Freud understand that the genital stage of adolescence is that the
individual will begin to consider romantic relationships, such as finding their true love, soulmate
and so on. Basically, Freud understands the individuals are finding a partner and being in love.
While Erikson trusts that in the stage of adolescence, the individual will more likely to find their
personal identity, their real self. One of the main component of Erikson's psychosocial stage theory
is the progression of ego identity. Ego identity is basically the individual's conscious sense of self
that will happens through social interaction. For instance, the way people acts. According to
Erikson, an individual's ego identity is constantly changing due to new events and ... Show more

Erikson 's Theory Of Lifespan
Introduction Erikson's theory of lifespan continues in the final four stages of life, which are
identified as adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood and late adulthood. Each stage
identifies a conflict to be resolved with indicators of success and failure at the stage. It seems
however, that the theory in its framework is not all inclusive. Each section will discuss the conflict
and indicators of resolution, as well as identifying how the stage may vary for different groups.
Adolescence
The adolescence stage in Erikson's theory occurs between age twelve to age eighteen, where the
conflict to be resolved includes identity versus role confusion. During this timeframe, the individual

This process is especially unique due to having neither identity of gender or sexual preference being
dominant, causing it more difficult for women to fully embrace their individuality.
Young Adulthood In Erikson's theory for young adulthood, the conflict to be resolved at this stage is
intimacy versus isolation. The theory discusses how individuals in the age group of 20 to 40 are
attempting to establish meaningful relationships with other people (Erikson handout, 2017). Success
at this stage includes strong relationships, being able to maintain friendships, and physical and
emotional intimacy, while failure to resolve the conflict resulted in loneliness and isolation (Erikson
handout, 2017). The conflict at this stage is representative of socially constructed expectations of
gender roles and cultural expectations, which does not account for several groups. In the stage's
framework, it assumes a life path surrounding relationships and traditional expectations of marriage
and family development, family defined as heterosexual. This traditional framework of development
does not align with modern development of lifespan. Gilligan (1993) discusses how traditionally in
American culture, women's roles are relational, and their identity is tied to their relationships with
men and children. With this, Erikson's theory at this stage excludes women who are driven by
careers or other passions outside of

What Are The Differences Between Erikson And Freud
Erikson and Freud are two names that one cannot miss while talking about psychology. Sigmund
Freud is called the father of psychology. In terms of theories, Freud is known for his psychosexual
theory, and Erikson is known for his psychosocial theory.
Though both believed that personality develops in a series of predetermined stages, both of them
have different explanations.
While Freud based his theory on sex, Erikson did not give much importance to the sexual drive of
an individual. On the other hand, Erikson focused on identity.
Freud believed that an individual's identity developed during adolescence. Erikson believed,
however, that an individual's identity developed and evolved throughout a person's life. Unlike
Freud's thoughts that maturation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Erikson's psychosocial theory also talked about different stages like: Trust vs. Mistrust, Autonomy
vs. Doubt, Initiative vs. Guilt, Industry vs. Inferiority, Identity vs. Role Confusion, Intimacy vs.
Isolation, Generativity vs. Stagnation, and Integrity vs. Despair.
According to the Oral stage, (from birth to one year), a child's primary source of pleasure is through
the mouth by sucking, tasting, and eating. Erickson says that it is a period (Trust vs. Mistrust) when
children try to learn to trust and mistrust their caregivers. In the Anal stage (1 to 3 years), a child
gains a sense of mastery by controlling bowel and bladder movements. However, Erikson says it is a
period (Autonomy vs. Doubt) when children develop self–sufficiency by controlling activities such
as eating, toilet training, and talking.
In the next stage of Freud's Phallic stage (3–6 years), the libido's energy focuses on the genitals, and
they begin to identify with their same–sex parent. To Erikson, however, it is a period of Initiative vs.
Guilt where a child begins to take more control over their

Erikson Guilt
The third stage of Erikson's psychosocial development is the initiative vs. guilt stage which is
typically experienced between four and five years of age. Erikson (1997) describes this stage as
where the child has to now find out what kind of person he is going to be. The child displays
behaviors that are described as exploratory, curious and intrusive by always asking why questions.
The crisis that is encountered during this stage is found between the ability for the child to take
initiative in leading others, making decisions and experiencing a sense of guilt. The guilt that can be
experienced is caused if the parents do not allow the child to explore. Initiative is developed when
the child is positively reinforced to explore their environment, ... Show more content on

This is also where Erikson believed the Oedipus complex or as Erikson preferred, the early
generational complex is seen. At this time, the child experiences genital fantasies and feel an
immense sense of guilt that further allows the child to develop a conscious (Engler, 2009).
Therefore, this "Oedipal stage results in the development of a moral sense that establishes
permissible limits and begins to attach childhood dreams realistically to the various possible goals of
one's technology and culture." (Engler, 2009). Overall, the main concept of this stage as described
by Erikson (1963), is the child's ability to engage in cooperative play and have the ability to engage
in purposeful action to later achieve major life goals. At this stage in my personal development, I
engaged in cooperative play with children my age and distinctly remember playing games that
revolved around things that were familiar and desired such as playing house, making dinner, and

Abstract This paper will touch over the aspects of Erik H Erickson 's eight stages and how they
affect everyday lives from infancy to adulthood. The paper will go over the approximate ages and
the psychosocial crisis that they will eventually come to. Neglecting a child can lead to a cause of
mental negligence in the form of "Arrested Development". Within different cultural backgrounds,
this paper will focus on the relationship of the infant and the mother, and the stresses and trauma
they may or may not have to discuss about a future development.
The biography of Erik Erikson Who exactly was Erik Erikson? Erik Erikson (1902–1994) was an art
teacher who became a psychoanalyst working with a person named, Anna Freud. Erikson was a
psychologist known for his psychological theory on human beings. Erikson trained as a Freudian
psychoanalyst but believed that social interaction was more important than Sigmund Freud 's
psychosexual development. (Pearson 251). The word psych relates to the brain and the thinking into
the mind, and the word social relates to the way that the mind racks with those around us in the
public. So what is psychosocial really? Psychosocial is defined as the psychological development of
the individual in relation to his or her social environment.(Pearson 251) These eight stages (left

Erikson Stages Of Adolescence

  • 1. Erikson Stages Of Adolescence Identity often refers to a sort of desperate quest or a deliberately confused search through both a mental and moral experience. However, Erikson approaches this idea as an experience that will almost be a surprise that sneaks up on one, rather than something that can be found. The process of identity formation is located in the core of an individual, and also in the core of ones communal culture. This process is ever changing and developing, but reaches a crisis during the stage of adolescence. At the earliest stage of the identity crisis there is an important need for trust in oneself and others. Adolescents, at this stage, look passionately for ideas to place faith in, and additionally, ideas, which seem worthwhile to prove ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 252). Adolescents can be remarkably intolerant to peers or concepts which one may view as "different". Erikson explains that such an intolerance to something abnormal or different may be a necessary defense against a sense of self–identity loss. However, this may be unavoidable at a time of life when ones body is changing its proportions drastically, and puberty is driving the body and imagination towards new impulses. In addition to an increased interest in intimacy with the other sex, one is confronted with too many conflicting possibilities and choices. Adolescents not only help one another through such discomfort by forming cliques and stereotyping themselves, their ideals, and their enemies, but also adamantly test each other's capacity for sustaining loyalties in the midst of inevitable conflict and values. Erikson explains that adolescence is a vital regenerator in the process of social evolution, and youth can offer loyalties and energies both to the conversation of that which continues to feel true and to the revolutionary correction of that which has lost its regenerative significance (Erikson, p. 255). This further explains Erikson's take on the ever– evolving process of forming ones identity. It is throughout childhood that tentative crystallizations of identity take place, which make the individual feel and believe some sort of identity has formed, only ... • 3. Erikson, Babies, By Erik Erikson And Freud 's Stages At the age of barely being a full one year old, a lot of transitions take place when being able to observe a baby in its environment. After watching Alana, a nine month old little girl, I was able to see both Erikson and Freud's stages come into play. While being in her home for a week, I was able to see and interact with her during different times of the day each on different days, which helped to truly see and observe her actions depending on what current mood she was in the for the day. For theorist Erik Erikson, babies are in the trust vs. mistrust stage up until the age of one. During this stage, attachment is a factor that begins, and when they are around strangers or anyone outside of their immediate family that they are constantly around, the true test comes into play. Their trust is based through bonding and a connection, and if their basic needs of nourishment, physical contact, and cleanliness are taken care of, then they put their trust in those people and generally happy. As for the opposing side, babies can also have trust issues and be very skeptical around people and cry/have fear when those basic needs are not met. While observing Alana, she is in a home with two older sisters, and two loving parents, which is one thing that I saw to be a blessing because she always had someone to play with her, tend to her needs, and just simply love her. I believe that because of this home environment that she lives in, this makes her mistrust for strangers, such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Erikson Identity Crisis Erik Erikson is a figure in psychology who examined many factors about the personality. One of his theories revolves around identity crises, which he believed countless people have gone through during their lives in order to solidify their identity. Since his findings on this topic in the 1970s, others have done studies on identity crises and how they affect development as well. The concept of an identity crisis is quite important in discovering how the ego grows and identity develops, and it has been referenced many times in popular culture. Being that it is so relevant to everyone's lives as Erikson believes, I picked this as a topic for this paper in order to understand the concept more. In this paper, I define Erikson's idea of identity crisis and then compare it to three other works which revolve around the subject. Then I compare each article to Erikson, my personal experience, and occasionally to each other in order to demonstrate how Erikson's ideas on identity crisis are valid in a modern setting. Identity crisis can be defined as a mental state where an individual is "easily upset by a sudden or intense stimulus" where "their egos seems to have lost any shook–absorbing capacity" (Frager, 2013, p. 165). Furthermore, he states that these individual's "egos seemed to have lost any shock– absorbing capacity" and their "sensory systems [are] in a constant 'startled' state" (Frager, 2013, p. 165). He coined this term while treating soldiers at Mount Zion Veterans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Erikson Theory Erikson's psychosocial stages of development Hope: Trust vs. Mistrust (Infants, 0 to 1 year) * Psychosocial Crisis: Trust vs. Mistrust * Virtue: Hope The first stage of Erik Erikson's theory centers on the infant's basic needs being met by the parents. The infant depends on the parents, especially the mother, for food, sustenance, and comfort. The child's relative understanding of world and society come from the parents and their interaction with the child. If the parents expose the child to warmth, regularity, and dependable affection, the infant's view of the world will be one of trust. Should the parents fail to provide a secure environment and to meet the child's basic need a sense of mistrust will result. According to Erik ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Aggressive behaviors, such as throwing objects, hitting, or yelling, are examples of observable behaviors during this stage. Preschoolers are increasingly able to accomplish tasks on their own, and with this growing independence comes many choices about activities to be pursued. Sometimes children take on projects they can readily accomplish, but at other times they undertake projects that are beyond their capabilities or that interfere with other people's plans and activities. If parents and preschool teachers encourage and support children's efforts, while also helping them make realistic and appropriate choices, children develop initiative– independence in planning and undertaking activities. But if, instead, adults discourage the pursuit of independent activities or dismiss them as silly and bothersome, children develop guilt about their needs and desires Competence: Industry vs. Inferiority (Childhood, 6 to 11 years) * Psychosocial Crisis: Industry vs. Inferiority * Main Question: "Am I successful or worthless?" * Virtue: Competence * Related Elements in Society: division of labour The aim to bring a productive situation to completion gradually supersedes the whims and wishes of play. Freud And Erikson Research Paper Fullerton College Psychoanalytical Perspective: Freud and Erikson A Comparison of Two Theorists' Contributions to Child Development Rebekah Rosengreen Yvonne Bailey CDES: 140 F 29 November 2016 Think back to your childhood and try to remember a time where you felt lost or confused about your own sense of self, or maybe you saw others and wondered why you didn't like the same things that they did. These moments and feelings directly relate to the psychoanalytical perspectives in childhood today. • 13. Erikson Research Paper Writing Assignment two: Theories Paper The psychologist Eric Erikson (1902–1904), was Freud's student and one of the brightest and he became known for the human development theories. Erikson created eight human's development stages. Those stages are: trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. role confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, and integrity vs. despair. These development theories are part of everyone's life from the time they are born to the end of life. As noticed on the theories, they have two oppositions which, usually, individuals debate within themselves between those theories. Also, the first five stages of the eight stages of development ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the stage that Erikson stresses that adolescents "negotiating the complexities of finding one's own identity is the primary task in adolescence." At this stage, children become adolescents who try to figure out their personality and how they will fit to society. This is the stage after childhood and the body is changing within hormones. According to Berger (2014), "psychosocial development during adolescence is often considered the search for self–understanding." Their personality changes back and forth as they try to differ from others and if they do not establish a final identity, they become confused about themselves. Intimacy versus isolation is the sixth stage of psychosocial development. This is the time when people look for formal relationships and tend to debate whether they will be loved or will be lonely. Dunkel and Sefcek (2009) stress that this stage "represents the ability to share with and commit to another, most often in the form of romantic relationships. The psychosocial strength that can be gained in the sixth stage is love." In this case, if love is not gained, the individual might become isolated and depressed. Erikson (1963) states the ... • 15. Erikson and Personal Psychosocial Stage Renowned psychologist Erik Erikson is best known for his theory of psychosocial stages of personality development. Unlike Freud, Erikson's theory spans a person's entire lifespan, from childhood to old age. One of the main elements of Erikson's psychosocial stage theory is the development of ego identity (Cherry, 2013). Ego Identity is the conscious sense of self that we develop through social interaction (Cherry, 2013). Erikson believed that our ego identity is constantly changing due to new experiences and information we acquire in our daily interactions with others (Cherry, 2013). The stages of Erikson's theory are concerned with becoming competent in an area of life (Cherry, 2013). Erikson believed that if a stage is handled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I do try to make connections when I can. My life consists most of going to the gym, bike riding or running, work, and school. These activities keep me fairly busy, and I don't always have a lot of time for going out. I am not really into the bar scene as I don't drink. Very shortly after I graduated with my undergraduate degree, I was diagnosed with some serious health problems. I was hospitalized three times before doctors arrived at an accurate diagnosis. The resulting ongoing issues with my health sometimes inhibit the forming of meaningful relationships. Although I am shy by nature, I try not to let this keep me from getting along and conversing with people at work and in general. It is just that shyness is a tendency, one that I need to be aware of. I try to get outside of my comfort zone and talk to people to form acquaintance–type relationships. Although these are not meaningful relationships, they are the type of relationships I have with people at work, and it makes work more pleasant to have people to talk to and converse with as I go throughout the day. Being shy, and in a stage where I should be finding meaningful relationships is a hindrance, and could be seen as a negative effect on the stage that I am currently in. My mother tells me that when I was very young I was very extroverted and made a lot of friends easily. • 17. Comparison Of Erikson And Kohlberg's Theory Erik Erikson and Lawrence Kohlberg are famous theorist who have contributed a lot to the nursing profession. Erikson's theory is about psychosocial development whereas Kohlberg's theory is about moral development. Erikson has eight stages, that he believed were accomplished at different periods of life, in his theory of psychosocial development starting with; trust versus mistrust during infancy; autonomy versus shame or doubt experienced at a toddler age; initiative versus inferiority during preschool and school–aged period; identity versus identity confusion during adolescence; intimacy versus isolation experienced as a young adult; generativity versus stagnation experienced as a middle–aged adult; and lastly integrity versus despair ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another stage of Erikson's theory that is similar to stages of Kohlberg's theory is identity versus identity confusion where the adolescent learns the essence of what makes them who they are from bringing together everything they have learnt and what kind of person they will be. Kohlberg's stages that are similar is the conventional stage of good boy/ nice girl morality where the school– aged child follows rules to be accepted by those around them, and the postconventional stage of social contract orientation where the adolescent will follow society customs for the benefit of others. These three stages are closely associated as someone's identity is usually shaped by the customs of society. People will do what is expected of them to be accepted which in turn contributes to their identity. The last similarity between the two theories is Erikson's stage of generativity versus stagnation where the middle–aged adult broadens their concern from themselves to the community and world, and Kohlberg's postconventional stage of universal ethical principles where the adult's actions are determined by their own ethical principles and standards of behaviour. These two stages complement each other as a person cannot have concerns for the community and world if they do not have a sense of their own beliefs and values as a foundation. A person needs to know what they value to then go on and have concerns that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Erikson Trust And Mistrust Essay Erikson's first stage is developing a trust or a mistrust in this world from a very early age with the virtue that results from this, being hope. Tate writes that we can look at this stage between infants and their caregivers and compare them with ourselves as born again Christians and God as our caregiver (2007). It seems to me that if you are a Christian, then the terms trust and faith are synonymous and the result is hope. When we first commit our lives to Christ, we have to put all of our trust into Him. We worry about how God will meet our needs, whether it's financially, emotionally, practically, etc. We worry that He may choose not to meet our needs to teach us a lesson, in which we insinuate that God may not be all that loving or even evil, depending on the situation. The other side of that is becoming angry that God is not shielding us from anything this is not good, not allowing us to prosper. If a community ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am fascinated that these two disciplines lead to the same conclusion, that if there is no trust or faith in your caregiver, serious issues with mistrust occur, which will not lead to hope. Erikson says that there needs to be a healthy balance of trust and mistrust in order for hope to develop (Engler, 2014) and in order for the person to be healthy and have the next stage build on foundation of the first one. This is true of Christianity, also, because there is a distinction between basic needs and desires. We would have to know that God will provide for our every need and the things He's promised, but the fact that He will not be handing us what we desire is clear. In my particular case, it is not trusting that God will take care of my needs and that He wants to do so. • 23. Psychoanalytic Theory Of Erik Erikson Christina Gogh EECE 310 W Professor Rhodd 11/10/17 Erick Erickson Erik Erikson is known for his psychoanalytic theory of psychosocial development comprising eight stages from infancy to adulthood. Psychologist Erik Erikson, is a major contributor to developmental psychology, who proposed a comprehensive theory of the ways that individuals develop their identity, a sense of who they are, and society's influence on that development. Erikson stated that people go through crisis at each stage of their lives. The stages each had a developmental task to be mastered. As an individual resolved these various crises an individual would have a better harmony with their social environment that they live in. If an individual could not successfully resolve a crisis, they would be" out of step", and the individual would have a greater difficulty in their dealing with a crisis in the future. Erikson did however recognize that an individual can develop through a stage negatively and still go on with their life. Erikson stated that each of the psychological stages have a basic conflict and important event leading to growth. The theory was developed from his hundreds of clinical observations in children. Identity is central to Erikson's thinking. Erikson coined the term "identity crisis". Erikson lived such a crisis in his own life. At a young age Erikson found out his father was really his stepfather. Erik Homberger Erikson was born on June 15, 1902 in Frankfurt, Germany to his mother ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1942 during World War 2 they migrated to the United States. They moved to the United States so my grandpa didn't have to enlist in the war due to their culture. My mom was born five years later in 1974 in Olivet, South Dakota. According to Erikson's theory we go through eight different development stages in life. Each stage contains continual development and growth, meaning we develop throughout our entire lives. In this paper, we look at every stage and how did my mom achieve or fail to achieve the tasks Erikson claims happen in each stage. 1. Trust versus mistrust (Infancy 0 –1.5) In adulthood, we don't have recollections of this stage; however our beginnings are a very essential starting point to our lives. During this stage it's important to develop trust, which follows people their entire lifespan. My grandmother was twenty–three years old when my mom was born. She had a home birth and she also breastfed my mother. It was very common during that time in the Hutterite culture to have large families. During this time a child is supposed to develop optimism, trust, confidence, and security. These key elements are developed through the love and care of a parent or primary care giver. If these elements are not nurtured then a child is more likely to develop mistrust, insecurities, and the feeling of worthlessness (Erikson 1968). • 46. The Theories of Bandura versus Erikson How does an infant develop into an adult? The answer is not as obvious as it seems. There are a variety of factors that contribute to human development. A person not only grows physically but also cognitively and socio–emotionally. This paper will explain two theories; one cognitive and one socio–emotional; about human development. The two theories will be described, compared, contrasted and individually evaluated based on the strong points and limitations. The first theory examined is Albert Bandura's social cognitive/learning theory. A child does not automatically know how to interpret their environment, but they can learn about the world around them and how to manipulate their surroundings by observing people around them. According to Bandura (2002), "Viewed from the sociocognitive perspective, human nature is characterised [sic] by a vast potentiality that can be fashioned by direct and vicarious experience into a variety of forms within biological limits" (pp. 271–272). Although a large amount of learning from watching other people happens in childhood, a person can acquire new skills or knowledge at any point in their life with the help of other people. The second theory examined is Erik Erikson's eight stages of psychosocial development. Each stage in Erikson's theory involves a conflict/crisis that a person must work through to evolve their personality. • 48. Five Stages Of Eric Erikson Eric Erikson was one of the most famous theorists of the twentieth century; he created many theories. One of the most talked about theories is his theory of psychosocial development. This is a theory that describes stages in which an individual should pass as they are going through life. His theory includes nine stages all together. The original theory only included eight stages but Erikson's wife found a ninth stage and published it after his death. The nine stages include: trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. identity confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, integrity vs. despair, and hope and faith vs. despair (Crandell and Crandell, p.35–36)). The First stage in Erickson's theory is trust vs. mistrust, this stage occurs during infancy, from birth to one years old. This stage is all about trust, it is the stage where you hopefully begin to trust not only yourself but others as well (Crandell and Crandell p. 36). An infant gains trust in infancy because they can not do anything for themselves, they depend on others to do everything for them therefore in this stage they develop trust in others, their caregivers, that they will do all that they can to take care of their well–being. Developing trust in infancy is crucial because this makes the individual grow up feeling safe and secure in the world. • 50. Erikson Human Development Theory The human development theory that I believe best explains and gives insight into Kate's reasons for alcoholism is Erik Erikson's Psychosocial life–span development theory, it explains human development in eight stages and gives us insight into Kate's ongoing struggle and insight into her problems. A reminder that Erikson makes for all those using his theory is that each one of his stages in human development is not a set–in stone theory, but to be used as a general guide. Erikson's explains that when one is working through the stages there will be many conflicts and opportunities. Whether, the development is through internal work and gain, external work and gain, or plain losses, environmental forces affect and complicate an otherwise simple pattern of progressive growth (Nugent, p.67). Erikson believes that each crisis depends on the interactions between the individual and the social environment as family and culture construct it. "What is won can later be lost– and re–won" said Erickson, adding that the body is not determined by one thing, but by many things which is great news for Kate. According to his theory, children who do not resolve their first stage of trust vs mistrust will have problems trusting in adulthood and will have negative effects on the dynamics of the next stage. Let's look at Kates situation, when she was an infant feeling of trust should have been inculcated within her, but since this never occurred mistrust took place in the first year of her life. ... • 54. Erikson 's Theory On Development From leaning objective 8.9, explains the development of the personality along with social interpersonal skills, and the concept of the self from infancy to adulthood, I wanted to compare the first five stages of Erikson's theory on development to Ken Wilber's first five stages of his nine stages, that he calls spaces. The first five stages of Erikson 's theory, which he notes as crisis, are trust versus mistrust, autonomy versus shame and doubt, initiative versus guilt, industry versus inferiority, and identity versus role confusion. The first four "personal spaces," of Wilber 's theory are the archaic, the magical, or egocentric, the mythical, and the rational. Erikson 's theory states that an emotional crisis must be successfully met for normal development. Wilber 's theory is similar in that he uses an example of a multiple story building. If one stage isn 't completely understood, but not mastered, then that floor will end up leaning, and a building like that cannot be sustained for long before its structural integrity is compromised. Erikson's theory is based that social interactions were the most important thing to consider for healthy development of children. The first stage, starting from infancy on to 1 year of age, has the crisis of trust versus mistrust. This just means that they develop either of these skills based on how well their needs are taken care of. The next crisis starts at 1 year of age up to 3 years of age, toddler age. The stages are basic trust vs. basic mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. identity confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generatively vs. stagnation, and finally integrity vs. despair. In Wild Strawberries the character Isak Borg goes through all the stages that Erikson talk about in his book Life Cycle Completed and you get a visual understanding of what Erikson means about the stages. The first stage Borg goes through is integrity vs. despair, which is when he has a bad nightmare. In the nightmare, Borg is ... In the sixth scene is at the gas station, and the attended knows Borg from being his wife's doctor for a long time. Borg and the attendant talk about how the attendant's parents are doing and his wife is pregnant with a baby girl. Borg starts to pay for his gas the attendant tells Borg not to worry about it, that it was on him. Borg again tries to pay for the gas and the attendant tells him something's cannot be paid off, even with gas. In this, we see intimacy vs. isolation because the attendant's family is friends with Borg and they all care about him. The seventh scene Borg is in a very good mood. He talks and laughs with Marianna, the brothers got into a discussion about god and death. The brothers ask Borg for his opinion and he told them that he did not want to talk about it. Borg started reciting a poem when he could not remember the rest Marianna helped him finish it. Then he tell the children he wants to see his mother. You see in this scene the stage of generatively because he shows he cares a lot about the children. In the eighth scene, Borg's mother thought that, Marianna was his wife and his mother did not like Marianna because she had caused too much trouble between him and his mother. Borg then explained that Marianna was his son's wife. Borg's mother started telling Marianna that she had ten ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Theories Of Erikson Erik Homburger Erikson (15 June 1902 – 12 May 1994) was a German–born American developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst known for his theory on psychosocial development of human beings. He may be most popular for inventing the phrase identity crisis. Erik Erikson is much like Sigmund Freud, Erikson assume that personality will progress in lots of stages. But, unlike Freud's theory of psychosexual stages because generally, Erikson's theory describes the influences of social experiences across the whole life. Thus, there are also disagreement between Freud's and Erikson's theory. Freud understand that the genital stage of adolescence is that the individual will begin to consider romantic relationships, such as finding their true love, soulmate and so on. Basically, Freud understands the individuals are finding a partner and being in love. While Erikson trusts that in the stage of adolescence, the individual will more likely to find their personal identity, their real self. One of the main component of Erikson's psychosocial stage theory is the progression of ego identity. Ego identity is basically the individual's conscious sense of self that will happens through social interaction. For instance, the way people acts. According to Erikson, an individual's ego identity is constantly changing due to new events and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 64. Erikson 's Theory Of Lifespan Introduction Erikson's theory of lifespan continues in the final four stages of life, which are identified as adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood and late adulthood. Each stage identifies a conflict to be resolved with indicators of success and failure at the stage. It seems however, that the theory in its framework is not all inclusive. Each section will discuss the conflict and indicators of resolution, as well as identifying how the stage may vary for different groups. Adolescence The adolescence stage in Erikson's theory occurs between age twelve to age eighteen, where the conflict to be resolved includes identity versus role confusion. During this timeframe, the individual establishes a sense of self, where successful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This process is especially unique due to having neither identity of gender or sexual preference being dominant, causing it more difficult for women to fully embrace their individuality. Young Adulthood In Erikson's theory for young adulthood, the conflict to be resolved at this stage is intimacy versus isolation. The theory discusses how individuals in the age group of 20 to 40 are attempting to establish meaningful relationships with other people (Erikson handout, 2017). Success at this stage includes strong relationships, being able to maintain friendships, and physical and emotional intimacy, while failure to resolve the conflict resulted in loneliness and isolation (Erikson handout, 2017). The conflict at this stage is representative of socially constructed expectations of gender roles and cultural expectations, which does not account for several groups. In the stage's framework, it assumes a life path surrounding relationships and traditional expectations of marriage and family development, family defined as heterosexual. This traditional framework of development does not align with modern development of lifespan. Gilligan (1993) discusses how traditionally in American culture, women's roles are relational, and their identity is tied to their relationships with men and children. With this, Erikson's theory at this stage excludes women who are driven by careers or other passions outside of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Erikson Research Paper Erikson believed that our identities develop in eight stages. Each stage is distinguished by a psychosocial crisis. These crises could have a positive or negative outcome. Freud's work influenced Erikson's theory. He also believes that every person goes through these stages in the same order. The first stage takes place between 0 to 1 years old. The crisis that happens in this stage is trust vs. mistrust. The needs for a positive outcome are care, affection, responsive parents, reliability and feeling safe and secure. Some of the possible negative outcomes are developing insecurities, fears, and suspicions. The second stage takes place between 1 to 3 years old. The name of the crisis for this stage is autonomy vs. shame and doubt. The needs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. What Are The Differences Between Erikson And Freud Erikson and Freud are two names that one cannot miss while talking about psychology. Sigmund Freud is called the father of psychology. In terms of theories, Freud is known for his psychosexual theory, and Erikson is known for his psychosocial theory. Though both believed that personality develops in a series of predetermined stages, both of them have different explanations. While Freud based his theory on sex, Erikson did not give much importance to the sexual drive of an individual. On the other hand, Erikson focused on identity. Freud believed that an individual's identity developed during adolescence. Erikson believed, however, that an individual's identity developed and evolved throughout a person's life. Unlike Freud's thoughts that maturation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Erikson's psychosocial theory also talked about different stages like: Trust vs. Mistrust, Autonomy vs. Doubt, Initiative vs. Guilt, Industry vs. Inferiority, Identity vs. Role Confusion, Intimacy vs. Isolation, Generativity vs. Stagnation, and Integrity vs. Despair. According to the Oral stage, (from birth to one year), a child's primary source of pleasure is through the mouth by sucking, tasting, and eating. Erickson says that it is a period (Trust vs. Mistrust) when children try to learn to trust and mistrust their caregivers. In the Anal stage (1 to 3 years), a child gains a sense of mastery by controlling bowel and bladder movements. However, Erikson says it is a period (Autonomy vs. Doubt) when children develop self–sufficiency by controlling activities such as eating, toilet training, and talking. In the next stage of Freud's Phallic stage (3–6 years), the libido's energy focuses on the genitals, and they begin to identify with their same–sex parent. To Erikson, however, it is a period of Initiative vs. Guilt where a child begins to take more control over their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Erikson Guilt The third stage of Erikson's psychosocial development is the initiative vs. guilt stage which is typically experienced between four and five years of age. Erikson (1997) describes this stage as where the child has to now find out what kind of person he is going to be. The child displays behaviors that are described as exploratory, curious and intrusive by always asking why questions. The crisis that is encountered during this stage is found between the ability for the child to take initiative in leading others, making decisions and experiencing a sense of guilt. The guilt that can be experienced is caused if the parents do not allow the child to explore. Initiative is developed when the child is positively reinforced to explore their environment, ... At this time, the child experiences genital fantasies and feel an immense sense of guilt that further allows the child to develop a conscious (Engler, 2009). Therefore, this "Oedipal stage results in the development of a moral sense that establishes permissible limits and begins to attach childhood dreams realistically to the various possible goals of one's technology and culture." (Engler, 2009). Overall, the main concept of this stage as described by Erikson (1963), is the child's ability to engage in cooperative play and have the ability to engage in purposeful action to later achieve major life goals. At this stage in my personal development, I engaged in cooperative play with children my age and distinctly remember playing games that revolved around things that were familiar and desired such as playing house, making dinner, and emulating goals I wanted to achieve such as playing Doctor and learning from my ... A lot of development happens early in life and so many factors contribute to this. I have also learned what happens in each stage of life. It is good to know the parts of the brain, what happens in each part, and when changes in the brain occur. The stages of Erikson and Piaget fit so many things in life. They give so much detail on what an individual is going through at that particular time. Not only did we learn when the body develops, but we also touched on the body's decline as we get older. Our health is important in every stage of life, so it is important to understand where an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At this time, the foundation for children to build up their intimate relationships with the world is to cultivate themselves, rely on them, and whether they can feel that they deserve to be trusted. 2 Early childhood (autonomy versus shame, suspicion) At this time of the year, the infant has developed the muscle of the whole body including the anus sphincter, it comes to be able to walk standing by oneself, and it becomes possible to control the excretion. Whether it is possible to acquire the sense of autonomy through the experience of excretion and holding becomes important as a developmental problem. It is praised by parents if it is possible to excrete well, and the infant experiences an embarrassed feeling when failing. This closure is achieved by accepting the finitude of biological life and the succession of generations. According to Erikson the negative outcome occurs with the sense of failure or not to complete the life project itself, in this case the "hopelessness" arises; frequent in depressive symptoms. These steps should not be taken absolutely, no individual and cultural diversity. The crisis does not necessarily imply a negative outcome, but is, at the same time, an opportunity for personal growth and development. • 78. Erik Erikson 's Stages Of Development The Psychosocial Development The View on Erik H. Erikson 's Stages of Development Frank Phan Cosumnes River College Psychology 300 Abstract This paper will touch over the aspects of Erik H Erickson 's eight stages and how they affect everyday lives from infancy to adulthood. The paper will go over the approximate ages and the psychosocial crisis that they will eventually come to. Neglecting a child can lead to a cause of mental negligence in the form of "Arrested Development". Within different cultural backgrounds, this paper will focus on the relationship of the infant and the mother, and the stresses and trauma they may or may not have to discuss about a future development. The biography of Erik Erikson Who exactly was Erik Erikson? Erik Erikson (1902–1994) was an art teacher who became a psychoanalyst working with a person named, Anna Freud. Erikson was a psychologist known for his psychological theory on human beings. Erikson trained as a Freudian psychoanalyst but believed that social interaction was more important than Sigmund Freud 's psychosexual development. (Pearson 251). The word psych relates to the brain and the thinking into the mind, and the word social relates to the way that the mind racks with those around us in the public. So what is psychosocial really?
