IMS Trends & Directions
IMS celebrates 45 years of innovation and a new
release. IMS 13 achieves unprecedented levels of
performance, staking claim as a cornerstone for
contemporary IT enterprises worldwide. This session
highlights the significance of IMS’s impact on the world
of enterprise software, and discusses strategic
directions of IMS.

10:00 – 10:15 Morning Break
10:15 – 11:15 IMS02: IMS / Tools - Not just for the Next Generation
We are always talking about how we need new
intelligent tools for the next generation DBA's, but in
today’s world all DBA's have smart devices with them or
on their desktops. In this presentation you will learn how
new IMS/Tools software can help ease the everyday
stress DBA's are having with larger workloads and less
resources. See how the future of IMS/Tools software will
help you reach your future goals. The new features of
Autonomic Director will alleviate database related
outages by giving you the information needed to
forecast the future. The latest Administration Console
will combine information across your IMSPlex and
beyond. It eases the stress of knowing what the issues
are and how to resolve them. You will see use cases of
how this will improve your day to day life as a DBA.
Janet Leblanc
IBM Canada
11:25 – 12:25 IMS03: IMS Connect Monitoring and Diagnosis
The presentation will discuss Energizer for IMS Connect
and its integration points with MainView IMS and BMC
Log Analyzer for IMS. The aim will be to provide
customers with information and tooling to assist in
diagnosing OTMA and ODBM problems.
Graham Fox

13:30 – 14:30 IMS04: IMS Modernization & Integration Strategy
and Solutions
This session discusses how IMS is key to the integration
of your enterprise architecture; how it supports open
integration technologies both within and beyond
enterprise boundaries. This session brings you up to
speed on the robust integration capabilities with IBM's
strategic solutions, plus cross-brand initiatives, including
Clouds, Mobile, Big Data, and Analytics, etc. You will
learn how you can leverage your IT resources to better
respond to emerging strategic initiatives!
Shyh-Mei Ho
IBM US
14:30 – 14:50 Afternoon Break
14:50 – 15:50 IMS05: IMS 100K TPS: Roadblocks, Limitations, and
Solutions
The IMS 13 "100K" project achieved a sustained
average transaction rate of over 117,000 transactions
per second (TPS) on a single system, running on the
most current IBM hardware. This presentation tells the
story of how this was achieve by overcoming the many
challenges encountered along the way.
Bhups Narsi
IBM Australia
16:00 – 17:00 IMS06: Change you can believe in.
What are some of the inhibitors to adapting and growing
your IMS environment to take advantage of new IMS
capabilities? In this presentation, we would like to look
at the challenges for introducing change in the IMS
Environment, how tools can help with these challenges,
and open a discussion about the issues you are
presented with in your organisation for evolving IMS
Rafael Avigad
Fundi Software
17:00 IMS07: IMS Swapshop
This session is an open forum.
It is your chance to ask questions of anyone present or
to bring up any concerns you may have.

17:30 End of day 1.
Thursday 22nd June
8:45 – 9:00 Arrive
9:00 – 10:00 IMS08: IMS System Administration – A Different
View
Topic will cover System Administration for IMS
Database Console and how its features can assist with
dynamic changes to IMS. Coverage will include
monitoring and managing IMS Message Queues and
IMS Connects. If time permits an update will be
provided on the latest updates to the System
Administration products.
Graham Fox
BMC Software
10:00 – 10:15 Morning Break
10:15 – 11:15 IMS09: IMS in a Sysplex Environment: Challenges
and Solutions
IMS coupled with Sysplex technologies can greatly
Nick Griffin
IBM US
5. improve IMS's scalability, availability and performance.
However, running IMS in a Sysplex environment brings
some configurational and operational challenges. CF
structures and SQ monitoring, transaction affinity
management, long lock detection, buffer overflow
protection, and RM structure management are task that
IMS administrators have not dealt with before. Learn
how to effectively cope with these challenges with IMS
Sysplex Manager.
11:25 – 12:25 IMS10: IMS & Mobile
The evolution of IMS throughout its 45 years makes it a
perfect partner in the current Mobile Revolution. By
leveraging IMS integration capabilities, IMS clients can easily
extend the business value of their existing IMS transactions
and databases, have a fast time-to-market, and reduce the
TCO for their Mobile infrastructure. This session discusses a
variety of options in integrating Mobile with IMS.
Shyh Mei Ho
IBM US
12:30 – 13:30 Lunch
13:30 – 14:30 IMS11: Using SQL to your IMS databases
IMS 13 extends the ability to access your IMS
databases with SQL. In this session, I detail how to set
up your environment for the IMS Catalog, and write
COBOL applications accessing your IMS databases
with SQL. Further, I will show how to use C# on the
distributed platform to access your IMS databases.
Geoff Nicholls
IBM Australia
14:30 – 14:50 Afternoon Break
14:50 – 15:50 IMS12: Can visually interacting with the log records of
composite transactions help solve problems more
effectively?
Analyzing problems with transactions on z/OS can feel like
measuring a strand of cotton when your starting point is a
shirt: you need to dissect individual aspects of the transaction
without losing the overall picture of how they fit together. That
means knowing where and how to get logs for various
subsystems, relating these logs together, and finally
interpreting the combined output.
IBM Transaction Analysis Workbench for z/OS is a tool that
provides a coherent picture of a transaction across
subsystems - including IMS, DB2, CICS, WebSphere MQ,
and z/OS itself - helping you to pinpoint the source of
problems. We demonstrate a step-by-step proof-of-concept
model for visually interacting with composite log data to help
identify and resolve problems involving multiple subsystems.
Rafael Avigad
Fundi Software
16:00 – 17:00 IMS13: Tools that help you migrate to IMS v13
Together, the IBM IMS Tools Solution Packs and IMS 13
deliver simplification, automation and intelligence, with all the
tools needed to support IMS databases now in one package.
It doesn’t make sense to run reorganization utilities if your
databases do not need to be reorganized. Now you can
quickly and easily improve IMS application performance, IMS
resource utilization and deliver higher system availability with
the end-to-end analysis of IMS transactions. Comprehensive
performance reporting and easier interactive analysis
determine what happened, what needs fixing and how to fix it
– all part of the intelligence and automation of the IMS Tools
