To be baptized in the Holy Spirit is a wonderful, rewarding, powerful experience. The Holy Spirit gives us supernatural gifts to make us more effective in spreading the Gospel. Be very careful that you don't quench the Spirit.
2. Hebrews 6:1-3 (NIV)
Therefore let us leave the elementary
teachings about Christ and go on to
maturity, not laying again the
foundation of repentance from acts
that lead to death, and of faith in God,
instruction about baptisms, the laying
on of hands, the resurrection of the
dead, and eternal judgment.
And God permitting, we will do so.

4. Preview Foundation Stone #5: Holy spirit Baptism
1. The Holy Spirit is God in spirit form.
2. Sometimes we call Him the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, . . .
3. The Holy Spirit is in people. A believer’s body is His temple.
4. To receive the baptism of the Spirit, be ready to be a witness.
5. God wants to live in us, guide us, teach us, comfort us, . . .
6. The Holy Spirit was first poured out on us on Pentecost.
7. To expect to be Spirit-filled, first repent and be water
baptized.
8. Filled believers impart the Spirit by laying hands one who isn’t.
9. Immediately, the Spirit gives gifts, then fruit begins to grow.
10. The Spirit’s gifts are supernatural, like speaking in tongues.
11. When receiving the Holy Spirit Baptism, pray hard and long.
12. You can’t enter the Kingdom if not born of water and Spirit.
6. Q1: What is the Holy Spirit?
A1: Not what, but Who. The
Holy Spirit is the Spirit of
God: God in spirit form.
R1: John 4:24, Philippians 3:3 and I
Corinthians 2:10-12
7. John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship
him must worship in spirit and truth.
Philippians 3:3 For it is we who are the
circumcision - we who worship in the Spirit of
God and boast in Christ Jesus. We have not
placed any confidence in the flesh.
8. 1 Corinthians 2:10-12 But God has revealed
those things to us by his Spirit. For the Spirit
searches everything, even the deep things of
God. Is there anyone who can understand his
own thoughts except by his own inner spirit?
In the same way, no one can know the
thoughts of God except God's Spirit. Now, we
have not received the spirit of the world but
the Spirit who comes from God, so that we
can understand the things that were freely
given to us by God.
10. Q2: Are there other names/titles/roles for the
Holy Spirit?
A2: The Holy Spirit is
sometimes called the Holy
Ghost, the Comforter or the
Helper, and He is our Teacher
and the guarantee of our
inheritance.
R2: Matthew 28:19, John 14:26, 15:26, Luke
12:12 and Ephesians 1:13,14
11. Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
John 14:26 But the Comforter, even the Holy
Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,
he shall teach you all things, and bring to your
remembrance all that I said unto you.
John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom
the Father will send in my name, will teach
you all things and remind you of all that I have
told you.
12. John 15:26 "When the Helper comes, whom I will
send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth who
comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf.
Luke 12:11,12 When people bring you before
synagogue leaders, rulers, or authorities, don't
worry about how you will defend yourselves or
what you will say. For in that hour the Holy Spirit
will teach you what you are to say.”
Ephesians 1:13,14 You, too, have heard the word of
truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you
believed in him you were sealed with the promised
Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance
until the redemption of God's own possession, to
his praise and glory.
13. Q3:
Is the Holy Spirit
everywhere, in objects
and animals? Or is the
Holy Spirit only in people?
14. Q3: Is the Holy Spirit everywhere, in objects and
animals? Or is the Holy Spirit only in people?
A3: The Holy Spirit is only in people.
According to the Bible, God only
baptizes ("overwhelms"), or fills,
people with His Holy Spirit because
people do important things. Every
time a person is filled with the Holy
Spirit they do something - as
evidence to the other people who
are near.
R3: Acts 2:2-4 and I Corinthians 3:16
15. Act 2:2-4 Suddenly, a sound like the roaring of a
mighty windstorm came from heaven and
filled the whole house where they were sitting.
They saw tongues like flames of fire that
separated, and one rested on each of them. All
of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit
gave them that ability.
1 Corinthians 3:16 You know that you are God's
sanctuary and that God's Spirit lives in you,
don't you?
16. Q4:
Who does God want to
fill/baptize with His Holy
Spirit? Are there special
requirements?
17. Q4: Who does God want to fill/baptize with
His Holy Spirit? Are there special
requirements?
A4: God wants to pour out His
Spirit on ALL people. But only
obedient people who are
ready to be His witnesses will
receive the Holy Spirit.
R4: Acts 2:17-18, 5:32, 1:8 and I Corinthians 2:4,5
18. Acts 2:17,18 'In the last days, God says, I will
pour out my Spirit on everyone. Your sons and
your daughters will prophesy, your young men
will see visions, and your old men will dream
dreams. In those days I will even pour out my
Spirit on my slaves, men and women alike,
and they will prophesy.
Acts 5:32 We are witnesses of these things, and
so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to
those who keep on obeying him.
19. Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the
Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
1 Corinthians 2:4,5 My message and my
preaching were not accompanied by clever
words of wisdom, but by a display of the
Spirit's power, so that your faith would not be
based on human wisdom but on God's power.
20. Q5:
Why does God want to
baptize/fill everyone
with His Holy Spirit?
21. Q5: Why does God want to baptize/fill
everyone with His Holy Spirit?
A5: Many reasons: to lead us,
to guide us, to comfort us, to
help us to pray, to teach us,
to give us power over sin, to
live in us, to love us. But the
main reason is to use us to
display His glory to all people.
R5: Romans 8:9-14,26,27, 15:18,19
22. Romans 8:9,11,13,14,26,27 You, however, are not of
the flesh but under the control of the Spirit, since
God's Spirit lives in you. And if anyone does not
have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to
him. And if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus
from the dead is living in you, then the one who
raised Christ from the dead will also make your
mortal bodies alive by his Spirit who lives in you.
For if you live according to the flesh, you are
going to die, but if by the Spirit you continually
put to death the activities of the body, you will
live. For all who are led by God's Spirit are God's
children. In the same way, the Spirit also helps us
in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray
as we should. But the Spirit himself intercedes
with groans too deep for words, and the one who
searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit,
for the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to
God's will.
23. Romans 15:18,19 For I am bold enough to tell
you only about what Christ has accomplished
through me in the bringing of gentiles to
obedience. By my words and actions, by the
power of signs and wonders, and by the
power of God's Spirit, I have fully proclaimed
the gospel of Christ from Jerusalem as far as
Illyricum.
24. Q6:
When did Jesus begin to
baptize people with the
Holy Spirit, as John the
Baptist prophesied?
25. Q6: When did Jesus begin to baptize people with the Holy
Spirit, as John the Baptist prophesied?
A6: The Day of Pentecost, shortly
after Jesus went up into heaven, is
the day when the Holy Spirit fell
down from heaven with a mighty
wind and with tongues of fire on
the heads of the 120 or so believers
who were praying for God to lead
and guide them.
R6: John 7:39 and Acts 1:4-8 and Acts 2:1-4
26. John 7:39 Now he said this about the Spirit, whom
those who were believing in him were to receive.
For the Spirit was not yet present, because Jesus
had not yet been glorified.
Acts 1:4-8 While he was meeting with them, he
ordered them, "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait
for the Father's promise, about which you heard
me speak. For John baptized with water, but you
will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many
days from now." Now those who had come
together began to ask him, "Lord, is this the time
when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" He
answered them, "It is not for you to know what
times or periods the Father has set by his own
authority. But you will receive power when the
Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth.”
27. Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost came, all
of them were together in one place. Suddenly,
a sound like the roaring of a mighty
windstorm came from heaven and filled the
whole house where they were sitting. They
saw tongues like flames of fire that separated,
and one rested on each of them. All of them
were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to
speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them
that ability.
28. Q7:
How does a person
prepare to be baptized
with the Holy Spirit?
29. Q7: How does a person prepare to be
baptized with the Holy Spirit?
A7: By repenting, getting water
baptized and then praying
earnestly for it. There's a first
time to be filled and there are
more times that follow.
R7: Acts 2:38,39, 8:15-17 and Ephesians 5:18
30. Acts 2:38,39 Peter answered them, "Repent and
be baptized, every one of you, in the name of
Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
Then you will receive the Holy Spirit as a gift.
For this promise belongs to you and your
children, as well as to all those who are far
away, whom the Lord our God may call to
himself.”
31. Acts 8:15-17 They went down and prayed for
them to receive the Holy Spirit. Before this he
had not come on any of them. They had only
been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Then they laid their hands on them, and they
received the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 5:18 Stop getting drunk with wine,
which leads to wild living, but keep on being
filled with the Spirit.
32. Q8:
How does a person
receive the
baptism/filling of the
Holy Spirit?
33. Q8: How does a person receive the
baptism/filling of the Holy Spirit?
A8: Initially, the Spirit was poured
out from heaven on 120
believers. That can still happen,
but most of the time, a Spirit-
filled believer will lay hands on a
believer without the Holy Spirit
who will then believe and
receive Him.
R8: Acts 8:17-19, 10:44-46, 19:2-6 and Galatians 3:2,5
34. Acts 10:44-46 While Peter was still speaking
these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all the
people who were listening to his message. Then
the circumcised believers who had come with
Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy
Spirit had been poured out on the gentiles, too.
For they heard them speaking in tongues and
praising God. Then Peter said,
Acts 8:17-19 Then they laid their hands on them,
and they received the Holy Spirit. Now when
Simon saw that the Spirit was given through
the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered
them money and said, "Give me this power too,
so that when I lay my hands on someone he will
receive the Holy Spirit.”
35. Acts 19:2-6 and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy
Spirit when you believed?" They answered him, "No,
we haven't even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
He then asked, "Then into what were you
baptized?" They answered, "Into John's baptism."
Then Paul said, "John baptized with a baptism of
repentance, telling the people to believe in the one
who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus." On
hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the
Lord Jesus. When Paul laid his hands on them, the
Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak
in tongues and to prophesy.
Galatians 3:2,5 I want to learn only one thing from
you: Did you receive the Spirit by doing the works of
the law or by believing what you heard? Does God
supply you with the Spirit and work miracles among
you because you do the works of the law or
because you believe what you heard?
37. Q9: How can anyone know when the Holy Spirit fills
someone?
A9: There is short-term evidence: gifts.
And there is long-term evidence;
fruit. Gifts are powerful special
abilities that Spirit-filled people use.
Fruit are character changes that
make Spirit-filled people desirable to
a spiritually hungry world.
R9: I Corinthians 12:4-7, I John 3:24, Acts 10:44-48, Galatians
5:22-25
38. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 Now there are varieties of gifts,
but the Spirit is the same; and there are varieties of
ministries, but the Lord is the same; and there are
varieties of results, but God is the same, and it is he
who produces all the results in everyone. To each
person has been given the ability to display the
Spirit for the common good.
Acts 10:44-48 While Peter was still speaking these
words, the Holy Spirit fell on all the people who
were listening to his message. Then the circumcised
believers who had come with Peter were amazed
that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out
on the gentiles, too. For they heard them speaking
in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, "No
one can stop us from using water to baptize these
people who have received the Holy Spirit in the
same way that we did, can he?" So he ordered
them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
Then they asked him to stay for several days.
39. Galatians 5:22-25 But the fruit of the Spirit is love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There
is no law against such things. Now those who
belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh
with its passions and desires. If we live by the
Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.
1 John 3:24 The person who keeps his
commandments abides in God, and God abides
in him. This is how we can be sure that he
remains in us: he has given us his Spirit.
40. Q10:
What are the powerful
gifts of the Holy Spirit
and how are they
displayed?
41. Q10: What are the powerful gifts of the Holy
Spirit and how are they displayed?
A10: They are supernatural
abilities, including the ability: to
speak a message of wisdom, to
speak with knowledge, to show
faith, to heal, to do miracles, to
prophecy, to discern spirits, to
speak tongues, and to interpret
tongues.
R10: I Corinthians 12:7-11
42. 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 To each person has been
given the ability to display the Spirit for the
common good. To one has been given a
message of wisdom by the Spirit; to another
the ability to speak with knowledge according
to the same Spirit; to another faith by the
same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by that
one Spirit; to another miraculous results; to
another prophecy; to another the ability to
distinguish between spirits; to another various
kinds of tongues; and to another the
interpretation of tongues. But one and the
same Spirit produces all these results and
gives what he wants to each person.
43. Q11:
What if a person has
hands laid on them to
receive the baptism of
the Holy Spirit, but
nothing happens?
44. Q11: What if a person has hands laid on them to
receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, but
nothing happens?
A11: Keep praying and desiring a
gift that displays the Spirit in
your life. Ask the Spirit-filled
believers who are laying hands
on you and praying for you to
pray in the Spirit with deep
groaning.
R11: I Corinthians 14:1,5; 12:7,31, Ephesians 6:18 and
Romans 8:26,27 and Jude 1:20,21
45. 1 Corinthians 12:7 To each person has been
given the ability to display the Spirit for the
common good. Keep on desiring the better
gifts. And now I will show you the best way of
all. Keep on pursuing love, and keep on
desiring spiritual gifts, especially the ability to
prophesy. Now I wish that all of you could
speak in tongues, but especially that you could
prophesy. The person who prophesies is more
important than the person who speaks in a
tongue, unless he interprets it so that the
church may be built up. I thank God that I
speak in tongues more than all of you.
46. Romans 8:26-27 In the same way, the Spirit also
helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how
to pray as we should. But the Spirit himself
intercedes with groans too deep for words, and
the one who searches our hearts knows the mind
of the Spirit, for the Spirit intercedes for the saints
according to God's will.
Ephesians 6:18 Pray in the Spirit at all times with
every kind of prayer and request there is. For the
same reason be alert with every kind of effort and
request for all the saints.
Jude 1:20,21 But you, dear friends, must continue to
build yourselves up on your most holy faith. Pray
in the Holy Spirit, and remain in God's love as you
look for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that
brings eternal life.
48. Q12: How important is it to be baptized in
the Holy Spirit?
A12: Jesus said that a person
cannot enter the Kingdom of
God unless he or she is born
of water and Spirit, meaning
water baptism and Spirit
baptism.
R12: John 3:3-8 and Romans 8:9
49. John 3:3-8 Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no
one can see the kingdom of God unless they are
born again." "How can someone be born when
they are old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely they
cannot enter a second time into their mother's
womb to be born!" Jesus answered, "Very truly I
tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God
unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh
gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to
spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying,
'You must be born again.' The wind blows
wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you
cannot tell where it comes from or where it is
going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
50. Romans 8:9 You, however, are not of the flesh
but under the control of the Spirit, since God's
Spirit lives in you. And if anyone does not have
the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.
