PROPHETS WERE ABSOLUTELY NEEDED
AND DEPLOYED BY GOD FROM THE
OLD TESTAMENT TO THE NEW
TESTAMENT TO THE END-TIMES.

3. OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY:
1. We want to understand HOW THE LORD SET UP
THE STRUCTURE AND FLOW OF HIS CHURCH (AND
HOW THE CHURCHES TODAY HAVE MADE A
CRUCIAL DEPARTURE FROM IT)
2. WE WANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT ARE THE
ROLES OF APOSTLES AND PROPHETS in the
prophetic community (in effect we will answer the
popular view that there are no more apostles and
prophets today)

5. JOEL 2:28-32
 “And it shall come to pass afterward
That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
 30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.
32 And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the LORD

6. I CORINTHIANS 14
 26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come
together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a
revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done
so that the church may be built up.27 If anyone speaks in a tongue,
two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and
someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker
should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.
 29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh
carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who
is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all
prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and
encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of
prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace— as in
ALL THE CONGREGATIONS OF THE LORD’S PEOPLE.

THE GIFTS
 12 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want
you to be uninformed…
 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes
them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are
different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same
God at work.
 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the
common good.8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of
wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same
Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by
that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to
another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different
kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of
tongues.[b] 11 ALL THESE ARE THE WORK OF ONE AND THE SAME
SPIRIT, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

10. I CORINTHIANS 12
THE STRUCTURE
27 ”Now you are the body of Christ, and
each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God
has placed in the church first of all
apostles, second prophets, third teachers,
then miracles, then gifts of healing, of
helping, of guidance, and of different
kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all
prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all
have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[d]? Do all
interpret?”

11. EPHESIANS 4
THE SPIRITUAL MATERIALS OF THE STRUCTURE:
 4 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live
a LIFE WORTHY OF THE CALLING you have
received. 2 Be COMPLETELY HUMBLE AND GENTLE;
be PATIENT, BEARING WITH ONE ANOTHER IN
LOVE. 3 Make every effort to keep the UNITY OF THE
SPIRIT THROUGH THE BOND OF PEACE. 4 There is
one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to
one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one
faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who
is over all and through all and in all.

12. EPHESIANS 4 continues with
THE “ASCENSION GIFTS”
 7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned
it. 8 This is why it[a] says:
 “WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH,
HE TOOK MANY CAPTIVES
AND GAVE GIFTS TO HIS PEOPLE.”[b]
 9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the
lower, earthly regions[c]? 10 He who descended is the very one who
ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole
universe.) 11 SO CHRIST HIMSELF GAVE the apostles, the
prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and
teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body
of Christ may be built up13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the
knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, ATTAINING TO
THE WHOLE MEASURE OF THE FULLNESS OF CHRIST.

lives by his Spirit.

himself as the chief cornerstone”)
TRADITIONAL ANSWER: THE 12 APOSTLES
AND THE BIBLICAL PROPHETS

21. That is PARTLY CORRECT.
HOWEVER, PLEASE NOTICE
SOMETHING VERY INTERESTING:
Ephesians 4
 “7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned
it. 8 This is why it[a] says:
 “WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH,
he took many captives
and gave gifts to his people.”[b]
 9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the

apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the

22. WHAT IS THE POINT OF “WHEN HE
ASCENDED ON HIGH”?
The twelve apostles and the other prophets appointed by
Jesus were and commissioned by God were ALL BEFORE
JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED AND ASCENDED ON HIGH.
MEANING, THE LORD ALSO APPOINTED OTHER
APOSTLES AND PROPHETS, AND CONTINUES TO RAISE
UP APOSTLES AND PROPHETS AND GIVE GIFTS TO MEN,
WHEN or AFTER HE ASCENDED ON HIGH,!!
MEANING, UP TO TODAY, APOSTLES AND PROPHETS,
ALONG WITH EVANGELISTS, PASTORS AND TEACHERS
ARE CONTINUING GIFTS OF THE LORD AND THE HOLY
SPIRIT TO THE CHURCH!!!

23. SCRIPTURAL EVIDENCE OF OTHER
APOSTLES (OTHER THAN THE 12)
AND PROPHETS:
- The ORIGNAL 12 APOSTLES are called “THE APOSTLES OF THE
LAMB” (REVELATION 21:14)
- 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great
and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming
down out of heaven from God. 11 It shone with the glory of
God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel,
like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall with
twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the
gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of
Israel. 13 There were three gates on the east, three on the
north, three on the south and three on the west. 14 The wall of
the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names
of the TWELVE APOSTLES OF THE LAMB.

PROPHETS:
ACTS 14
 At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish
synagogue.There they spoke so effectively that a great number of
Jews and Greeks believed.
 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because
he was the chief speaker.13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just
outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because
he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.
 14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore
their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: 15 “Friends,
why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you.”
BARNABAS IS NOT AN “APOSTLE OF THE LAMB” BUT HE WAS AN
“ASCENSION APOSTLE” – AN APOSTLE RAISED UP AFTER THE
ASCENSION

25. SCRIPTURAL EVIDENCE OF OTHER
APOSTLES (OTHER THAN THE 12):
ROMANS 16
“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon[a][b] of the church in
Cenchreae. 2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his
peopleand to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been
the benefactor of many people, including me.
3 Greet Priscilla[c] and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. 4 They risked their lives for
me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.
5 Greet also the church that meets at their house.
Greet my dear friend Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of
Asia.
6 Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you.
 7 Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in prison
with me. They are outstanding among[d] the apostles,
and they were in Christ before I was.”
ANDRONICUS AND JUNIA WERE ASCENSION APOSTLES.

26. I THESSALONIANS 2:1-6
 You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you was not without
results.2 We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in
Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell
you his gospel in the face of strong opposition. 3 For the appeal we
make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying
to trick you. 4 On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to
be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but
God, who tests our hearts. 5 You know we never used flattery, nor did
we put on a mask to cover up greed—God is our witness. 6 We were
not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even
though as APOSTLES OF CHRIST we could have asserted our
authority. 7 Instead, we were like young children[a] among you.”

27. Based on the revelation of “ascension
gifts”, there is a belief that there is a
HIERARCHY OF APOSTLES:
1. PRIMARY APOSTLES – EXAMPLE: THE
LAMB’S APOSTLES (THE ORIGINAL 12),
AND PAUL
2. SENIOR AND SUBORDINATE APOSTLES –
Silas, Barnabas, Timothy, Apollos, Junia
and Andronicus
3. APOSTOLIC COUNCILS - JERUSALEM

28. Now what is an APOSTLE?
APOSTOLOS – SENT OUT ONE,
COMMISSIONER, ENVOY,
REGENT, AMBASSADOR,
REPRESENTATIVE, OR
AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE

29. JESUS IS THE APOSTLE OF THE
FATHER
Hebrew 3:1
Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in
the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on JESUS,
WHOM WE ACKNOWLEDGE AS OUR APOSTLE AND
HIGH PRIEST.2 He was faithful to the one who
appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s
house. 3 Jesus has been found worthy of greater
honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has
greater honor than the house itself.

1. TO BE A FATHER!!!

14 I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as
my dear children.15 Even if you had ten thousand
guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in
Christ Jesus I became your
father through the gospel.16 Therefore I urge you to
imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent to you
Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the
Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ
Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in
every church.

35. THE FATHER’S LOVE…

36. I THESSALONIANS 2:6-12
 6 We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone
else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our
authority. 7 Instead, we were like young children[a] among you.
 Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, 8 so we cared for you.
Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not
only the gospel of God but our lives as well. 9 Surely you remember,
brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in
order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God
to you. 10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and
blameless we were among you who believed. 11 For you know that
we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his
own children, 12 encouraging, comforting and urging
you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his
kingdom and glory.”

this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully
works in me.

41. The tasks of an apostle
3. EXERCISE AUTHORITY COMING FROM SELF-
DENIAL (I COR. 4:9-13, GAL. 2:20)
1 Corinthians 4
1 So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and
as those entrusted with the secret things of God.
2 Now it is required that those who have been given a
trust must prove faithful.
3 I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human
court; indeed, I do not even judge myself.
4 My conscience is clear, but that does not make me
innocent. It is the Lord who judges me.

42. I CORINTHIANS 4
 6 Now, brothers, I have applied these things to myself and
Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the
meaning of the saying, "Do not go beyond what is
written." Then you will not take pride in one man over
against another.
 9 For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display
at the end of the procession, like men condemned to die in
the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole
universe, to angels as well as to men.
 14 I am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you, as
my dear children.
 15 Even though you have ten thousand guardians in Christ,
you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became
your father through the gospel.

43. I Corinthians 4
18 Some of you have become arrogant, as if I
were not coming to you.
19 But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord
is willing, and then I will find out not only how
these arrogant people are talking, but what
power they have.
20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter
of talk but of power.
21 What do you prefer? Shall I come to you
with a whip, or in love and with a gentle spirit?

44. Tasks of an apostle:
4. BUILDS UP THE KINGDOM, THE BODY OF CHRIST
“Soon afterwards, He began going around from one
city and village to another, proclaiming and preaching
the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him” (LUKE
8:1)
5. CARRIES OUT DISCIPLINE IN THE BODY OF CHRIST
(Heb. 12:5-13, Rev. 3:19, 2 Tim. 4:2, 2 Cor. 13:10, Titus
2:15, I Cor. 4:18-21, I Cor. 5:1-5)
This authority is carried out by REMOVAL OF
COVERING, AND BY SURRENDER (IN THE SPIRIT
REALM, THROUGH PRAYER) OF A RECALCITRANT
BROTHER, as in the case of I Corinthians 5

45. I CORINTHIANS 5 – A CASE OF
REMOVING THE APOSTOLIC
COVERING
 5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you,
and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping
with his father’s wife.2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather
have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the
man who has been doing this? 3 For my part, even though I am not
physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with
you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our
Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this. 4 So when you are
assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord
Jesus is present, 5 hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of
the flesh,[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

47. Characteristics of an apostle:

 “And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied,
there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because
their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.
 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and
said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve
tables.
 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest
report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over
this business.
 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the
word.”

 3 “I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before
me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple;
the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says
the LORD Almighty.
 2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he
appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. 3 He
will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and
refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will
bring offerings in righteousness,4 and the offerings of Judah and
Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in
former years.
 5 “So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against
sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud
laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless,
and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,”
says the LORD Almighty.

6 All these men were under the supervision of their father for the music of the temple of
the LORD, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the house of God.

91. Effect of an apostolic prophetic
community
Act 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered
together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued
to speak the word of God with boldness.
32 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and
no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they
had everything in common.
33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the
resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of
lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold
35 and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had

36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means
son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus,

1. WE HAVE TO DECIDE WHETHER WE WILL BELIEVE THAT APOSTLES OR
PROPHETS ARE NO MORE, OR WHETHER THEY ARE STILL
CONTINUING GIFTS AND OFFICES TODAY
2. IF WE DECIDE THAT THEY STILL ARE NEEDED, THEN WE MUST SEEK
APOSTOLIC AND PROPHETIC COVERING (NOT JUST PASTORAL
COVERING); we must structure our community on the 5-fold gifts
3. WE MUST DO EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER BY THE GRACE OF GOD
TO FACILITATE THE CONTINOUS AND FREE FLOW OF THE PROPHETIC
STREAMS
- Atmosphere of faith and expectancy
- Acceptance of the gifts, workings and operations of the Holy Spirit
- Purity of heart, speech and hand
