desstiftung Umwelt).
IIn the ecoMaker project, social and engineering scientists from the Department of Industrial Information
Technology at the TU Berlin are working together with the VINN:Lab of the TH Wildau, the FabLab Berlin
and the FabLab Kamp-Lintfort to transform makerspaces into learning spaces for sustainable develop-
ment. The interdisciplinary team develops tools and methods that help school children, students and
makers to develop more sustainable products.

Welcome
Welcome to the ecoMaker Design Sprint – the sprint that will allow you to unlock the hidden eco-potential
of your product.
The ecoMaker Design Sprint is a supplement to classic design sprints. It was especially developed to
realize an existing product idea in a more environmentally friendly way than originally planned.
You can perform the ecoMaker Design Sprint alone or in a group. It does not matter how much previous
knowledge you have. It is suitable for every experience level. A complete session takes two hours.
The ecoMaker Design Sprint is particularly suitable for physical products. To perform it you need a rough
idea of your product. If you are still looking for a product idea, design sprints on the system level might
be more suitable for you.
The Material
You can perform the ecoMaker Design Sprint independently with the help of the free material package.
The material can be easily produced by yourself with the print templates.

Design sprints are a creativity technique used to generate, develop and test product ideas. The
method uses tight time schedules for each phase of work to focus the participants' concentration
on the essentials, while the tasks at hand release a maximum of creativity.

Step-by-step guide -Instruction
During the ecoMaker Design Sprint you complete three work phases in two hours:
▷ 1. Base sprint
▷ 2. Eco sprint
▷ 3. Ideas sprint
In all three phases you work with the ecoMaker Design Sprint Canvas, a poster for labeling and pasting
from the material package. For the Eco sprint and the Ideas sprint you need two additional tools to guide
you in filling out the canvas, namely

▷ Idea sprint: ecoMaker logbook
Structure of the ecoMaker Design Sprint through the ecoMaker
Design Sprint Canvas
The individual work steps are arranged in the canvas as concentric rings. You work your way from the
inside out during the sprint. Each of these rings is also divided into segments that help you see the pro-
duct in all its life phases (from material harvesting to disposal). There is no separate ring for the final
work phase, the Ideas sprint. In this phase, work continues in the ring of the Eco sprint.
Under the step-by-step guide you can see an exemplary filled canvas for a funnel as an extension part
for the classic wooden marble run.

1. Base sprint
Duration: 20 minutes
Material: ecoMaker Design Sprint Canvas + Sticky notes
In the Base sprint you disassemble your product into its individual parts and write down all its characte-
ristics on sticky notes. In this way you get an overview of all the spots in your product where untapped
eco-potential can be hidden.
Look at each segment in the " Base sprint" ring individually. For all parts, note the manufacturing method,
material, function and what will happen to your product during and after use. Stick your notes in the
appropriate segment of the Base sprint.
If your product idea is still rather vague, use a common comparable product as a guide. If you can imagine
different variants of your product, note the respective characteristics for all variants.
2. Eco sprint
Duration: 40 minutes + 20 minutes
Material: ecoMaker Design Sprint Canvas + ecoMaker wheel
In the Eco sprint you look for more environmentally friendly alternatives to common solutions and feed
your canvas with them in the Eco sprint ring.
Look at each individual note in the "Base sprint" ring one after the other. Take the wheel and go through
the questions of the wheel window by window for each note. Start with the material window and work in
the direction of the arrow. The window offers you suggestions for possible more environmentally friendly
alternatives.
Write down each idea for an alternative and staple it in the Eco sprint ring in the segment above the
segment from the Base sprint to which your idea refers. There are no bad ideas, all ideas have to be
written down! At this point it is all about mass. You will sort it out later.
After 40 minutes at the latest, put the wheel away.
Now you have another 20 minutes to research open questions and to get clarity about your alternatives.
3. Ideas sprint
Duration: 80 minutes
Material: ecoMaker Design Sprint Canvas + ecoMaker logbook
In the Ideas sprint you filter out those environmentally friendly alternatives that suit you and your pro-
duct. At the end of this last phase you will know how to turn your product into an eco-product.
Open the logbook and work through it from front to back. In the logbook you define your personal requi-
rements regarding costs, time and other criteria such as durability or design. Afterwards you compare
your sticky notes from the Eco sprint ring with your requirements and thus you can gradually remove the
inappropriate ideas from the poster.

1. ecoMaker Design Sprint Canvas
Do you have the possibility to plot? Then plot the ecoMaker Design Sprint
Canvas in DIN A0.
But you can also print the poster in several parts (A4 each), cut off the
print edges and then join the sheets together with transparent adhesive
tape.
2. ecoMaker wheel
For the most comfortable handling, it is best to print the wheel on 300g
paper. If you don't have any at hand, normal printer paper will also do..
Cut out the outline of the wheel on all three pages.
Also cut out the window section from the cover sheet.
Glue the back and middle sheet together on their unprinted sides.
Now place the glued wheel on the table with the middle sheet facing up.
Put the cover sheet over it and pierce a hole through all three sheets with
a scissors.
Put the bag clip through the hole and bend the wires around so that all
parts of the disc are connected to each other and let the cover sheet turn
with the window.

3. ecoMaker Logbook
Print all pages of the logbook. Cut off the print margins. (If you want to
use the logbook more often, laminate the sheets one by one and use OH-
pens for labelling).
If you have access to a ring binding machine, you can bind the logbook
with a ring at the short end. If not, you can also simply staple the pages
together in the correct order.
