This document outlines the design process for a lamp base that incorporates upcoming trends and the brand Feiss. Research was conducted on trends for Spring/Summer 2016 from WGSN.com and StyleSight, as well as on the Feiss brand. Inspiration also came from Japanese glass balls. A sketch was created combining trends and the Feiss style. CAD software was used to render 3D models. The design was 3D printed and photographed. Finishes were added in Photoshop, including brushed nickel, iridescent glass, and wave-inspired glass globes. The process provided insight into product design careers.

2016
WGSN.com and StyleSight are two Trend Forecast websites that are
used in compiling the Summer/Spring 2016 upcoming trends. These
two sites compile upcoming trends and also reflect on past trends. Both
are good resources for product development and trend analysis.

Aside from Trends...More
Inspiration:
Along with the Trend fore-
cast and Brand Research, inspi-
ration for my design came from
these unique Japanese glass
blown, orb-like balls. These
are hand made by a man each
year for the numbered year we
are in. For example, in the year
2015 the man will make 2016
glass blown balls. These are
hand-made and then thrown
into the ocean for people to go
explore and find. These glass
balls have the up and coming
trends inspiration because some
of them are irredescant and the
glass alone is a hot trend. The
product I designed incorporat-
ed glass-like globes as a main
component. These are unqiue
and add a touch of trend and
design to my Lamp product.
Brand research is a crucial step when designing a product for a
company. In order to fit the brands style, and fit the customer expecta-
tions, a lot of research is needed to compile findings to create a better
4. In order to sketch this lamp base, the
Trend research and Brand research had
to be compiled together to fit both the
up and coming trends and the brand.
When compiling the trends and brand
research, this lamp base incorporates
the columns from the Greek inspira-
tion of the brand Feiss, while keeping
the plain and simple spheres as a more
modern touch.
Later, my design was edited to a
more modern look by eliminating the
fluting on the columns and making
them more like cylindrical pillars. The
trends are illustrated more so in the pre-
vious pages as I edited the lamp with
Photoshop and added optional finishes
that my lamp will be available in.
Incorparting both the Trend
Research and Brand Research to
develope a fitting design:
Concept Creation-Step 1:
Sketching the Lamp Design
Sketching the design is the begin-
ning stage of your product. After
compiling the research between
the brand Feiss and the Trends for
Spring/Summer 2016, a sketch can
be drawn putting ideas onto paper.
This is where the creativity and
imagination play a huge role. The
sketch is an idea or the blue print
5. Concept Creation-The Design Process:
Step 2: CAD renderings using the
free software TinkerCad.
Tinker Cad is a free de-
signing software available
to anyone. More advanced
versions of this software are
also available at a cost. This
software allows one to de-
sign whatever they wish by
using the tools provided. By
compiling shapes, and mak-
ing holes using other shapes,
something very intricate can
be designed with this pro-
gram. For 3D printing pur-
poses, one thing to consider
is to keep the entire design
above the blue graph area.
Anything placed below this
platform will not be printed
with the piece. This is a very
interesting and helpful pro-
gram that aides in design.
Once the entire product is
designed just as planned, it
needs to be grouped together
to ensure that every piece will
be printed as a whole. After it
6. More considerations are needed when designing
a product such as a lamp base. Considering the elec-
trical cords as a major component of this lamp base,
legs are added to the base of the lamp to allow for the
cords to flow through the bottom without creating in-
tereference with the surface the lamp is sitting on.
What to
condiser
when desig-
ing:
Tinker Cad 3D renderings before be-
ing grouped together for 3D printing:
When designing the lamp base, certain aspects need
to be taken into consideration, i.e. a place for the
electrical cords to sit within the lamp. Here there is a
hole that was placed using the TinkerCad software in
order to illustrate where the electrical cords will run.
This is the final TinkerCad rendering before being sent to the printer, and after
the design idea had been changed to fit the trends and brand.
7. Concept reation- Step
3&4: 3D Printing and
Pictures of Design
In this final step before adding finishes to the prod-
uct, the original design from TinkerCad will be sent to
the 3D printer for printing. The printing is performed
by a 3D printer machine that uses a laser and a plastic
material to build the product by laying down the mate-
rial being printed, layers at a time. Some conflicts de-
velope when the lamps are too frail to be printed with-
out stands, or even when the products have to be tilted
on their sides to have an accurate printed. When stands
are added, they can easily be popped off after the print-
ing is done. After the print is printed and ready to pick
up from the printer at The Factory at the University of
North Texas, pictures are to be taken
of the design on a solid black back-
ground. These pictures are used to
import to photoshop to create differ-
ent finishes that are available for the
product.**When having a product printed by
The Factory, be sure to consider the time it will
take along with the fee it occurs. The rate to print
at The Factory is $2.50 per hour of printing.**
8. Concept Creation-
Step 5:
Adding finsihes us-
ing the PhotoShop
software.
Finish
Option:
Brushed nick-
el base, with
a glass bubble
pillar and mo-
saic glass balls
as an aqautic
inspiration.
This one can be
lit with a regu-
lar lamp shade
and bulb or
the glass pillars
can be lit as an
accent lighting.
Here the trend
lies within
the glass pil-
lars and balls
as a part of an
aquatic inpira-
tion.
Photoshop is a computer progam that enables the process of ed-
iting photos to the mind’s imagination. You can add color, crop, or
change the entire look of a photo. For this, the lamp base pictures were
uploaded to add different finishes. This process is not all that easy,
considering there are different ways to use tools within this software.
This is where I added 3 finishes to provide different options available
in this lamp. By taking patterns and pictures that can be used as a fin-
ish, for example, the brushed nickel, it can add a variety of options for
customers looking at this product. This process is more timely and
more intricate then other steps in this design process.
9. Perspective of Finish
Option:
Hole for Lamp
components
such as the elec-
trical cords.
Finish
Option:
For this option we
kept the brushed
nickel as the top
and bottom of the
lamp. The pillars of
this lamp are a irre-
descant glass with
a unique pattern to
add texture that will
be illuminant when
the light is seen
through it.The glass
balls are offered in
an teal glass blown
ombre effect. Here
the ombre effect

redsecantglassisin-
corporporated as a
apart of the up and
coming trends.
10. Perspective of
Finish Option:
Hole for Lamp compo-
nents such as the electrical
cords. Finish
Option:
For this final fin-
ish option, I have
put together a more
ocean-inspired look
in the globes of the
base. Although the
brushed nickle is still
present and extends
throughout the pil-
lars of this base, the
globes are inspired
by waves that are put
into the glass. This
gives the oceanic vibe
while lighting the
desired space. Why
not have the beach
feel when the beach
is miles away? This
is aquatic inspiration
trend that incorpo-
rates the trends to
create a more modern
feel.

Finish Option:

nents such as the electri-
cal cords.
Relevance to Industry:
The designing process of this entire project has
been a peek into the industry. From Trend Research
to Brand Research, to sketching, designing, and all
of the available softwares, this has been a hands-on
task that is the first steps in beginning my experi-
ence in this industry. This is wat everyday product
developers go through to create the perfect prod-
uct for their company. Through this process, I feel
that I was really working on a companies line to cre-
ate a lamp base. Being in the UNT Home Furnish-
ings and Merchandising progam has opened my
eyes and my options to what is out there in this real
world of design. From Interior Design, to Product
Development the options are endless with imagina-
tion playing a constant role throughout the careers
that are exhibited within the industry. Overall, the
Home Furnishings industry is full of creativity and
design and that is reflected all togetherwithin this
