3. A noiseless patient spider,
I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated,
Mark’d how to explore the vacant vast surrounding,
It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself,
Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them.
And you O my soul where you stand,
Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space,
Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect them,
Till the bridge you will need be form’d, till the ductile anchor hold,
Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul.

● ‘out of himself’ shows that the threads are part of his
identity.
● The spider does this for a very long time. It is obviously
searching for something important.
A noiseless patient spider,
I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated,
Mark’d how to explore the vacant vast surrounding,
It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself,
Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them.
Stanza 1
6. ● The speaker now starts speaking about himself - the
deepest part of himself: his soul.
● Oxymoron: ‘surrounded, detached’. This shows that
although he is surrounded by things, he has no
meaningful connection to any of it.
● Even though he senses this estrangement from the world
he is as persistent as the spider in reaching out.
Stanza 2
7. Final Word
The speaker is, like the spider, alone. He is isolated not
because he is on a promontory but because he is
metaphorically detached from all that surrounds him. This
could refer to his emotional or intellectual or even romantic
connection to other people. It could also refer to his spiritual
connection with the world. The vagueness allows the reader
to interpret the poem according to their own experience of
detachment.
