8. This is a portrait that’s
benefitted from the
extra confidence
gained since studying
at University. The hair
is looser than I would
of approached it
beforehand. I have
also developed the
use of watercolour
brushes and tortillions
to lay down and blend
graphite around. I can
then use the putty
rubber as a drawing
tool for the highlights.

9. This drawing was
planned the be the
centre of three rat
pack portraits. I
intentionally gave this
one a background and
kept the others white
for a contrast. The
stripes were a bit off
the cuff and are
meant to represent an
art deco style. The
shadow behind
Sinatra then evolved
from that design. I
wanted to be more
instinctive but in
hindsight a little
research on patterns
or geometric designs
could of worked
better.

10. I like drawing black
skinned portraits as
the contrast is greater
when using applying
highlights. A good
contrast is something I
look to achieve when
drawing so an image
can be seen from
across the room. I took
a gamble with this
drawing by creating a
woven texture for the
suit and then erasing
different amounts to
suggest the light
blowing out the detail.

11. I used a little
photoshop on this
drawing to colour the
hair and blur the edge
of his jumper. With
pencil/graphite
drawings I’ve found it’s
best to start moving
pixels around because
it stands out a mile. I
generally just use
levels and remove the
odd blemish. I’m not
against using my
bamboo pen but find
freehand and digital
drawing are best kept
separate unless it is
unobtrusive or
obviously mixed media.
This is something I
want to explore more.

12. This was another
commission from the
same lady that bought
the rat pack drawings.
I beleive maintaining a
consistent level of
drawing gives me the
chance of selling more.
I obviously use a
reference photo but I’ll
also accentuate or
slightly exaggerate ,
play down some of the
features. With Elvis I
wanted his dyed hair
and black clothing to
contrast with his face.
This lets his eyes be
the main feature. I
would have liked to
blend his clothes more
cause they look rough.
Elvis
13. This is one of those
portraits that get’s
drawn very quickly and
the composition is
pretty straight forward.
As a rule I’m not a fan
of caricature but I
exaggerated his
features in this portrait
because Obama has a
cartoon quality to his
face. For the same
reason I accentuated
his teeth to give them
the Colgate effect. I
was pleased with how
his afro hair came out.
I used a large circulism
style and I enjoy
devising new
techniques to achieve
specific results.
Barack Obama
14. Previous portraits
drawn in the past have
been almost
exclusively black and
white graphite. Since
studying at Coventry
University I’ve been
encouraged to try
different mediums and
techniques. In this
work in progress
picture I have used
graphite, chalk, pva
glue, metallic stamp ink
and glitter. I’m realising
that whether the result
works straight off or
not it can only be a
good thing to find out
what results can be
achieved with different
materials.
