Beaches are very sensitive ecosystems and we need
to find a balance between conservation and social use,
which involves various elements to consider and that
gives the beaches a special status in terms of evolution
and how we consider them in the strategy

8. ALTER ECO
Alternative tourist strategies to enhance the local
sustainable development of tourism by
promoting Mediterranean identity
10. WHAT?
The general project objective is to enhance a balance
among tourist attraction, as an economic source of
growth, and the conservation of the classical
Mediterranean City Model as an example of
sustainability.
1. To reduce the concentration of human activities in hotspots where
carrying capacity is exceeded, through the diversification of the
offer, considering environmental, cultural and economic impact
2. To highlight the value of MED tourist destinations by reinforcing
Mediterranean identity and visibility and through the promotion of
local tradition and common cultural heritage
3. To enhance the coordination of actions between public and
private stakeholders towards the implementation of the raised
strategies in order to create new business opportunities
10
11. HOW?
ALTER ECO provides the opportunity of testing, in 6
representative MED cities/regions, used as LIVING
LAB, existing methodologies and tools arisen in
previous high impact projects with the aim of
reaching holistic and realistic tourist strategies at
local and regional level that promote local
sustainable development by preserving/restoring
Mediterranean Identity.

Region of Valencia (Valencia and Gandia), the region of South Aegean,
and the cities of Málaga, Genoa, Venice and Dubrovnik
12. HOW?
The alternative tourist strategies will respond to
different dimensions depending on the problems
detected:
land use planning (built environment, planning
methods)
mobility and transport, ecological sustainability
(natural environment and landscape, energy and
waste management),
economic sustainability (operational environment
and service structure, growth and measures)
and social sustainability (housing, well-being, local
culture).
Thus, ALTER ECO will condense all aspects of the
sustainability of tourism (environmental, social and12

INTRODUCTION
THANKS
The region of Valencia is a traditional tourist destination that welcomes more than 9 million international tourists a year that added to other 15 million national visitors makes it one of the top 20 regions in the EU with more tourists arrivals.
Today we will present 2 different projects. Though we are working hard to balance the flows and getting the tourists to visit the other inland destinations in the region and to do it during the whole year, truth is that the coastal area concentrates the flows and especially during the summer months.
That is why our main challenges are also located in the almost 500 km of beaches of the region.
The first project, called “Smart beaches” is directly linked to Smart Tourist Destination Strategy developed by the Institute of Tourism Technologies (INVAT.TUR)
Innovation, technology and sustainability are the main pillars of our Smart Destination Strategy and follow this model we have designed the action plan for Smart Beaches
Time is ticking so I have included the link to the strategy at the bottom of the slide in case you want to have a look later
http://invattur.gva.es/destinos-turisticos-inteligentes-comunitat-valenciana/
The project of Smart Beaches is supported by all the beneficiaries of the project.
First of all Destination managers because the deployment of technologies is bringing new data in real time that will help to identify patterns for a more efficient management.
Local business are also very enthusiastic because this project presents new possibilities for their business and also to explore new business models and services.
And, of course, beach users
VIDEO
In this slide you can see the map of technologies that can be applied in a Smart Beach.
In a first approach we identified more than 80 different possible applications for companies and services, beach users, and managers: from sea conditions and ecotourism to accesibility and e-commerce.
Our smart destination has 3 pillars.
First is the sustainability from a triple perspective: environment, economic and social
Second is the Accessibility
And we have added a third one that is Security
In this image we can see some of the services already implemented in a combination of the three pillars described before
This is the second project that we have proposed.
It’s financed by Interreg Program and part of the geographical strand: Mediterranean.
Alter Eco has a budget of around 2 million euros and addresses the problematic “touristification” of destinations in the Mediterranean basin.
Let’s say the challenge of managing the high concentration of visitors in time and space that also fits in the strategies for smart destinations.
The region of Valencia is not yet an overcrowded destination but there are many cases in the Mediterranean.
In this project, as I mentioned in the begining, we work to balance the concentration of visitors in the coastal aereas with the hinterlands developing alternative tourism strategies.
Aquí está todo muy explicado
Region of Valencia (Valencia and Gandía), the region of South Aegean, and the cities of Malaga, Genoa, Venice and Dubrovnik
Gandia, that is one of the pilots of the region of Valencia is a small city of 75,000 inhabitants and some 25,000 housing for tourist use.
In this case, the major problems are the seasonality and the high concentration of tourists in the beach area.
Tha city has decided to “sensorize” the beach area to gather information about the flows of visitors and beach users.
In our pilot Gandia historic district is some 6-7 km away from the beach area.
The main purpose here is outlining a plan to promote the tourism in the centre of the city.
It has to be with a cultural-nature bias since the historic district has some unique cultural heritage sites as the gothic palace of the Dukes of Gandía of the XIV century and some natural protected areas a few kilometres inland.
measures that tourism accommodations adapt to minimise the environmental impact including the energy use and costs.
What are the innovative initiatives and good practices implemented by the tourism industry stakeholders which successfully address the challenges of energy efficiency, protection of natural resources and environmentally friendly measures in tourism sector development?
How could these good practices be better spread and multiplied to encourage others in engaging in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly development of tourism?
Good practice : http://www.landscapehotels.com/ The first world congress about a new concept of tourism accommodation: the LandscapeHotel that took place in Valencia Region. A meeting where to debate about architecture, sustainability and tourism and show success stories recounted by its protagonists.
How can the sector incentivise more environmentally - friendly behaviour of tourists?
We encouge the promotion of responsible tourism policies and practices by governments and the private sector in line with the principles of the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, a comprehensive framework for the development of sustainable, responsible and universally accessible tourism that takes into account all its economic, social, cultural and environmental dimensions. The Region of Valencia is the 1st institution at the regional level to adapt this code to its context:
http://cursos.contagiahospitalitat.com/pdf/codigo_etico_turismo_valenciano.pdf
- Certificaciones:
http://www.qualitur.gva.es/opencms/opencms/qualitur/es/contents/certificaciones/medioambiente.html
- Premios y ayudas a la iimplant
How could the tourism sector contribute to and benefit from circular economy development?
Promoviendo el desarrollo rural: rural tourism preserves local communities by creating jobs, stimulating development, protecting the environment, supporting rural culture, arts and handicrafts, and calls
Who are the relevant actors at EU, national, regional and local level to support the tourism industry in fully participating in and benefiting from circular economy policies and initiatives and what are their roles?
We call on the EC to support campaigns to raise awareness in the sector about sustainable management of natural resources (in terms of reducing water consumption, food waste and the use of detergents and hygiene products)
