When I was a kid, I wanted to be a pioneer. But real life eventually got in the way, and my pioneer dreams were packed away with my other childhood things. Then, something monumental dawned on me when, while doing a writing exercise, I typed these words: “We yearned for freedom, a better life, and the chance to live on our own terms.” There it was — the connection between past and present, between my childhood heroes, who trekked across the American wilderness so many years ago, and what I am doing today. The words that followed are for all my fellow pioneers: the people striking out on their own, the remakeables finding their own way, the entrepreneurs breaking rank to chase their crazy dreams.
