Mission of the Church
 The primary mission of the church is evangelization and
catechesis
 NCDP 7-The basic aim of catechesis is to “put people not only
in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ”
(CT 5).The heart of catechesis is not a doctrine, or a moral
principle, or an act of worship, but “a Person of Jesus of
Nazareth” (CT 5).To catechize, then, is to lead persons to
study the mystery of Christ in all its dimensions, including the
teaching of Jesus Christ Himself, the truth. “Christocentricity”
is the key characteristic of our catechesis.-Integration

CHRISTOLOGY
 Mary, the mother of God (Theotokos)
 Why the Mother of God?
 Terminology is not equal to:
 Mother of God the Father
 Mother of the Holy Spirit
 Mother of the Divine Son
 Mother of theTrinity

Person – pagiging sino Niya – Anak ng Diyos
pagiging ano Niya – Nature
Nature – Divine (God) * Human (Man)
*Jesus is Divine and Human, cannot separated.

Jesus as true man
1. He was born of the human mother, Mary.
2. He performed ordinary human physical activities.
3. He experienced natural human emotions.
4. He died on the cross.

Jesus as true God
1. He performed miracles.
2. He possesses exceptional wisdom.
3. He has ordinary knowledge of the future.
4. He resurrected from the dead.

Christology
 To give more emphasize that Jesus is truly Son of God (Lk 1:35)
 The Council of Chalcedon (451) taught that the divinity and the
humanity in the one person Jesus Christ are united together “without
division or confusion”. - [CCC, 468]
 How does JC became man?
 - Annunciation
-with the power of the Holy Spirit thru the womb ofVirgin Mary

Christology
 ImmaculateConception – St. Anne preconceived, free from
original sin with Mary
-the dogma of the Immaculate Conception states "that the most
BlessedVirgin Mary, from the first moment of her conception, by a
singular grace and privilege from AlmightyGod and in view of the
merits of Jesus Christ, was kept free of every stain of original sin."
 VirginalConception – Mary conceived Jesus Christ with
the power of the Holy Spirit
-Thus she was able to become the “Mother of God” through the
working of the Holy Spirit -- [ccc, 721-726]

 Virginitas ante partum - Jesus was concieved by the
Holy Spirit without male intervention
 Virginitas in partu - Mary remained a virgin while
giving birth to Jesus
 Virginitas post partum - Mary remained a virgin all
her life

1. What is meant by Redemption?
 To saved; to be redeemed
 Christ offered Himself to Heavenly Father to obtain
forgiveness for the sin of man that heavenly life we
lost by sin and to merit all the graces for reaching
heaven. (Mt 26: 42)
 Adam – sin of disobedience – death
 Jesus –obedience to God till death- forgiveness of
sin; everlasting life.

2. What happened to Jesus
in His death?
 At His death, the soul of Christ left His body but the
Divine person of Christ remained united both His
soul and body. (Mystery of Resurrection). Christ
rose from the dead after 3 days.
 Ascension – Christ went up to Heaven body and
soul

3. Why did Christ rise from the dead?
 To prove that He is really God
 To teach us that we too will rise with Him

 By “Hypostatic Union” the eternal word, (not created/made) the
son of the Father and the 2nd person of theTrinity, has united as is
nature with His person in a true, substantial and definite union, a
human nature created in time with a body and spiritual soul from
theVirgin Mary, His true mother.
 The effecting of this union is common to the 3 Divine Person but
the oneness of Jesus is from God union of the 2 nature (God and
Man) without mixture and without separation.
 Hypostatic Union-belongs to the absolute Mystery of Faith. A gift
of faith
 The true Divine Sonship of Jesus Christ that He is a son of God. If
we really know Jesus

 Therefore, we must say that He is true God.The consubstantial
son of the Father. He is not created God from God, begotten not
made, the only begotten.
 ImmanentTrinity – God has begotten, the Son- no beginning-no
end. God already existed
 EconomicTrinity- God, creator; Christ saves us; Eternal
 As a God He is incapable of suffering because of consubstantial
Son not adopted son like us

 The Divinity of Christ is the preposition of His role in the
redemption, as mediator of His offices and of the privileges which
distinguish Him from us even in a human nature essentially
identical with ours, and even though, this characteristic also
belongs to Him in as much as He is a man.
 He is a real savior because only God will saves us even He is man,
He will remain as God.

Remembering what Jesus Did
A. The Society in Jesus time
1. Pharisees- Parash; to be separated; hypocrite; always
shows negative attitudes
A religion political association composed of priest, scribes;
strict legal interpreters; teachers of the common folks;
faithful about the law
2. Essenes- wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls; like a hermits..living
monastic life

 3. Zealots –”makabayan” like Simon, the apostle; organized
underground movement that Jesus is a non violent prophet..non
violent of active resistance; followers are willing to suffer and die
just to overthrow the Romans (peasants)
 4. Apocalyptic Movement – preach the new kingdom; God will
judge, destroy and the Messiah will come as they believe.
A new prophet; a new king but they didn’t know to whom and
when.

B. Jesus, the Prophet
 Expected by the people before who Jesus is?
 A Jew in peasant milieu affected by the present society.
 Hidden life of Jesus-not written because His life is just an
ordinary not unique.The flesh God
 Son of a carpenter; small contractor
 He has a way to promote during a religious life

 Role of a Prophet
 Preach repentance, conversion and obedience to God’s law neglect this
prophetic work- God’s judgment.
Christ is known as Prophetic figure rather than a Rabbi.
3 Dimensions of a Prophet
1. A prophet performs signs and wonder (deed)
2. Teaches with authority (words and deeds)
3. Suffers a martyrs death
Promise always have a promised from God
Ex. Mosses..Abraham..

 Baptism of JC as a prophet by John- baptism by penance
 Why Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist?
 Because it is a true sign that JC is with us..nakikiisa. God is with him, a true
prophet.
How to be a Prophet
1. Jesus passes by…
2. He sees somebody-looks with love
3. Description of a person’s occupation-conversion
4. The Call
5. Leaving everything
6. The one called follow Jesus…kalooban.

Deeds of Jesus Not a magic but the manifestation of the power of God (heal
the sick, droved out demons)
 Difference between miracle and mystery
 Miracle ofWriting; purpose – Christ acting
 Beyond; above human nature’s limit
 It is made by Christ not by man
Miracle of man (healed, paid)
Miracle of God (healed and followed Christ, experienceGod’s goodness
will remain in peace, joy, love, humility and patience.

c. Jesus, the Liberator
 Refers to different dimension of human existence
 “pagpapalaya” not only self but the IDENTITY
 Mk 2:1-3:6 – the attitude of Jesus towards the law
 Pharisees are to strict to the law
 Jesus liberate the people from the law a freedom for the sake
of human existence
 Liberate us from wrong practice
 Ex. Sabbath day

Jesus liberates us from….
1. Material possession; hunger in richness but hunger for the
poor (expect in poverty, break the economy)
2. Librates us from prestige, status and honor (Lk 8:1-3; Jn 11:5)
3. Liberate us from hunger of power, hatred, violence, revenge,
destroy the oppressed.
Authority means SERVICE but now authority is POWER.

D. Jesus, ang taong maganda ang
kalooban
 Grace perfects nature
 MotherTeresa-intensified by the grace of God
 Kalooban- hidden; secret, real-inner self…who he is as a
person; center of reality, a person as a whole – inner to
external manifestation
 Not in physical appearance but in LOOB
 Bukas na kalooban…di orocan!
 Jesus reflects the inner self
 Maganda- a beautiful inner self

Remembering what Jesus said
 Jesus always starts with the parable…”the Kingdom of God is
like…
A. Jesus, the prophet of the Kingdom
1.The Kingdom of God I the O.T. (Yahweh is the ruler of Israel)
2.The Kingdom of God is at hand (love one another)
3.The God of the Kingdom
4. A call to Metanoia (complete change…let God reigns, rely
on God’s grace)
In times of trouble always remember what Jesus said and done

Devotion to Jesus Christ
 Sacred Heart – symbolizes His love. Not the heart but the
total person
 Santo Nino- gamit sa business, pasuwerte, childhood state of
Jesus
 Nazareno – sins will be forgiven
 Santo Sepulcro- pray for our good preparation
 Lord of Pardon – forgiving Lord
 Lord of Mercy – 3 o’ clock habbit
 Holy Face – shroud
