Enviromental Pollution
Environmental pollution is a term that refers to all the ways by which people pollute their
surroundings. People dirty the air with gases and smoke, poison the water with chemicals and other
substances, and damage the soil with too many fertilizers and pesticides: People also pollute their
surroundings in various other ways. For example, they ruin natural beauty by scattering junk and
litter on the land and in the water. They operate machines and motor vehicles that fill the air with
disturbing noise. Nearly everyone causes pollution in some way.
Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems faced by humanity today. Air, water
and soil–all harmed by pollution are necessary to the survival of all living things. Badly polluted

The major threat to humanity comes from the development of nuclear sciences.
The nuclear experiments worldwide are destroying the atmospheric balance. The poisonous gases,
chemicals and dust released into the air fall back on earth as acid rain harming crops and life. This
has caused various harmful diseases.
Rain water is considered as the purest form of water. Water pollution in lakes, rivers, ponds and
other water bodies is caused by surface water which carries a large amount of chemical discharge of
industries and inorganic discharge of city sewage. Such impurities are a serious threat to the
existence of mankind.
Our country faces one more problem i.e. noise pollution. Loud horns during traffic chaos,
screaming loudspeakers at different occasions and blasting crackers that almost make one deaf are
killing the peaceful silence. Use of silencers, abiding by proper traffic regulations and checking
excessive use of public speaker systems can help in reducing noise–pollution.
This is the time of implement the steps for environmental Protection. It has been rightly said that
there is something in this world money can't buy, such as beautiful scenery and fresh

"Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to be dispersed
because we have been ignorant of their value." – R. Buckminster Fuller. A bus company in Great
Britain has taken this quote into full effect. The Bath Bus Company has created a first ever
"Bio–Bus" and will transfer its passengers between the Bath and Bristol Airport. This 40–seat bus
runs completely on biomethane gas which is generated through food waste and human waste. This
bus fills two needs: transporting passengers and improving air quality. By recycling an undesirable
product, this bus company has created something that improves their society (Pollution Control).
There are many more examples of countries and communities developing a product or plan to
improve the quality of their life. In fact, environmental protection has dated back to the beginning
of ancient civilizations and has continued to be an important concept in today's society. George
Perkins Marsh, an American diplomat and philologist, drafted a book titled Man and Nature. In his
writings, he explained the downfall of many ancient civilizations was caused by environmental
abuse. From deforesting hillsides to eroding their soils, many of the early civilizations destroyed
their natural fertility. As we look back in history, it is important that we learn from our mistakes.

Global Pollution Essay
Pollution is a growing issue in the world and is the major cause that contributes to many
environmental problems. What is usually classified as pollution, what kind of pollution is present
in the world, and what the people are doing to deal with this pollution issue in the world. There are
several problems with world pollution that are associated with global warming and include waste
disposal, water pollution, and air pollution. These things are usually caused by people on the planet
who produce waste. This has been a growing complication and is (omit) now been taken as a serious
issue. Solutions to these situations have been considered to keep the Earth and all the things in it.
One of the situations that are involved with world...show more content...
"The problem of exposure to hazardous materials remains, except that it is spread over a wider area"
(Newton).
Illegal waste disposal is also another reason that contributes to world pollution.
It may be defined as the improper disposal of waste at any site other than a regularly licensed
landfill or other facility. Usually this kind of disposal is done because people are unaware of the
law and are unwilling to take the time or refuse to pay the costs for properly disposing materials,
or are in possession of toxic materials that may cause legal problems. (Watts) "Illegal waste
dumping ranges from being a simple nuisance to a serious health hazard and often occur in isolated
or desolate places. In the United States, illegal waste dumping is often thought of as a local
problem; however, the motives and types of people who engage in it–including multinational
corporations, criminal syndicates, and individuals–persist throughout the world" (Watts).
The dangers of disposing of waste illegally are often unknown by some corporations or even
ignored. By not getting rid of waste properly it encourages more dumping, so a small problem may
rapidly become a major hazard. Another danger is the health risks posed by the type of material
being discarded. Dangerous materials commonly dumped illegally include such medical wastes as
used syringes

1.1Environmental Pollution For many centuries, environmental pollution had been a fact of life but
it transforms to a real problem when industrial revolution began. Environmental pollution is
described to be the contamination of the physical and biological components of the earth/atmosphere
system to such an extent that normal environmental processes are adversely affected according to
Kemp (1998).
Wikipedia (2008) defined Pollution to be an introduction of contaminants into the environment that
cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or that damage the environment
which can come in the form of chemical substances, or energy such as noise, heat or light. Whereas
Pollutants can be naturally occurring substances or...show more content...
Improper handling of solid waste and indiscriminate disposal in open spaces, road margins, tank
beds, and etcetera, give rise to numerous potential risks to the environment and to human health.
Direct health risks mainly concern those working in the field without using proper gloves, uniforms,
and etcetera; a high percentage of waste workers and individuals who live near or on disposal sites
are infected with gastrointestinal parasites, worms, and related organisms (SWMM, 2000).
For the public, the main risks to health are indirect and related to poor water, land, and air quality.
In addition, infrequent collection of waste provides an attractive breeding ground for flies and rats
(SWMM, 2000).
The most obvious environmental damage caused by solid waste is aesthetic, i.e. waste that litter
public areas is ugly and smelly. A more serious risk is the transfer of pollution to ground water and
land as well as the pollution of air from improper burning of waste. Many waste activities generate
greenhouse gases; e.g., landfills generate methane and refuse fleets are significant sources of carbon
dioxide and nitrous oxide. Open burning dumpsites produce volatilised heavy metals (e.g. mercury
and lead), dioxins, and furan. Leachate from unlined and uncovered dumpsites contaminates surface
and ground waters (Cointreau, 2006).

Pollution
Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment. It is a major
problem in America and as well as the world. Pollution not only damages the environment, but
damages us also. It has cause many problems ranging from lung cancer to the greenhouse effect. It
is all among us but we continue to live in our own filth. What is the reason behind this flawed
logic? In this paper I will examine the problems and solutions for this issue.
Automobiles are undeniable the greatest source of pollution. The noise pollution created by cars is
immense. Another polluting effect of cars is the heat it creates. This heat makes it unpleasant to be
near the car while its running. And of course the most famous...show more content...
American citizens throw away millions of tons of garbage each year, and this trash has to go
somewhere. While there are projects underway to clean and reuse this refuse most of it gets dumped
into huge landfills. These landfills are disgusting festering blisters on our country's landscape. But
people continue to consume and throw away more and more in the name of convenience. As they see
it, when things get old, throw it away and get a new one. They blame the government for the trash
problem, but the truth blame should be placed on themselves.
The last great source of pollution lays in the businesses. Although not common, businesses have been
known to dump their waste products into streams, lakes, and rivers. This may seem like a relatively
small occurrence that really is not your concern, but you're wrong. Each time one of these companies
pollutes there are horrible consequences to pay. Mutations, destroyed ecosystems, and human death
have all occurred as a direct result of illegal dumping. It contaminates our drinking water and soil. It
causes entire communities of humans (not to mention animals) to move on to new places not to
return for at least a century. The pollutants dumped by industry are so concentrated that a single
barrel can destroy an entire lake's ecosystem. Not only do companies dump chemicals, but also hot
water. This hot water kills most life it comes into contact with, but also causes an overgrowth

Abstract On Environmental Pollution
Abstract
Environmental pollution is anything that can cause harm to the environment. Pollution is any
undesired alteration of the environment and is often caused by human activities (Mader, 2016, pg.
552). Types of human pollution would be air, water, soil, radioactive, thermal, noise, and light. Each
of these forms of pollution has been known to cause the enormous amount of concern for the
environment. There are laws in place now that are limiting pollution and to help control the issue.
Environmental pollution is a serious problem we are facing globally. It is the debate concerning
pollution, which we have been pondering for the past century. Prior to the industrial revolution,
scientists thought that the atmosphere was untouched by man–made pollutants until they found air
bubbles hidden in the core of Greenland's ice shelf (Stromberg). After finding this essential
development, scientist began to reconsider the initial cause of pollution and how to decrease the
lasting effects of it. With this discovery, pollution was traced back to Ancient Rome and it was
decided that globally we needed a new approach for dealing with this problem. There are numerous
types of pollution and they each have a devastating effect on the global climate. A scientist has been
working on ways to re–direct the negative effects of pollution and at the same time encourage
people to try to find ways to do that part to help with this effort. We all can find some way to
improve the world and decrease pollution.
The problems with air pollution seem to be one of the largest most discussed situations. The Natural
Resource Defense Council (NRDC) air pollution is the release of pollutants into the air that is
damaging human health and world. There are many forms of air pollution and smog and soot are
two of them. These two are discussed more when dissecting this problem due to them being the
most common forms of air position, which are also the most detrimental of them all. When the
sunlight and emissions from fossil fuels interact that is how smog is created. The creation of soot
formed from smoke, dust, allergens and other particles are spread throughout the air in gas or solid
form. Methane is also a huge component of the

The environmental issue I choose is pollution. There is different types of pollution. There is water
pollution, air pollution, soil pollution, thermal pollution, radioactive pollution, noise pollution, and
light pollution. Every type of pollution is bad and it is causing health issues and even worst, deaths.
Pollution is A very serious subject that is harmful to people and the environment. It is killing A lot
of people. 4.6 million people die each year from pollution. Each year 1.2 trillion gallons of
untreated sewage, stormwater, and industrial waste are dumped into US water.Pollution is one of
the most biggest global killers affecting over 100 million people. Over 1 million seabirds and
100,000 sea mammals are killed by pollution every year. Approximately 40% of lakes in America
are too polluted for fishing, aquatic life, or swimming. Pollution occurs when pollutants contaminate
the natural surroundings. Pollution disturbs our ecosystem. Air Pollution is the most dangerous
forms of pollution. It occurs due to many of reasons, excessive burning of fuel, cooking, driving
and other types of activities that are similar. They release A huge amount of chemical substances in
the air everyday; these pollute the air. Also smoke from chimneys, factories, vehicles or burning
basically occurs due to coal burning. Air pollution is breaking down our ozone layer. There is
different types of pollution but environmental pollution has been around for centuries and it is
affecting the environment. People should care about this topic because pollution is a serious
problem and it causes many deaths and illnesses.
The worst types of pollution are air pollution and water pollution, they don't only harm our
environment but also our health. It's really scary to think about because around 15,000 people in
the world each day die because of water pollution and 2.4 million people in the world die each year
because of air pollution. So this is a big environmental issue. The causes of water pollution is water
and sewage waste. World population is increasing each year. This is causing huge environmental and
health damage. Most water pollution doesn't begin in the water it starts with what stuff filters and
enters through the water.

Pollutants are impacting aquatic organisms distributed by daily human activities and natural
occurrences. An extensive amount of pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, and hydrocarbons
can result in direct significant damage, e.g. death. However lower levels of these harmful substances
can be stored in an organism and increase as it continues and follows up the food chain, a process
called biomagnification or bioaccumulation, having the greatest effect on the top predator of that
food chain. A common result of the pollutants can lead to stress, changing of theimmune system,
inhibit lysozyme activity, damage gills, metabolism, and growth. Other factors include an excessive
amount of nutrients in the environment. Nitrogen can make its way into aquatic ecosystems when
there is an increase in nitrous oxide in the air, allowing eutrophication. Algae andbacteria feed off
the nitrogen, so a high number of these organisms appear and use oxygen around them as the feed,
causing hypoxic zones, or dead zones. Acidification, an increase in the ecosystem's pH acidity from
acid rain, which occurs from an increase in CO2 from air pollution. Aquatic organisms have a range
of tolerance, and water with high acidic pH will lead the organism out of the range of tolerance,
resulting in stress of the organism, and eventually death. Further studies are being pursuited to see
larger impacts of globalized pollution on aquatic species and their ecosystems.

Automobiles like these are around the world everyday, and their exhaust destroys our air everyday.
Our environment is a major aspect of our life today. Many of us don't take our
Earth seriously and think that as long as pollution doesn't hurt them they can go ahead and throw
garbage on the ground or spill oil down the drain. Well to many people have that theory and they are
killing off our Earth and also physically harming themselves from the air they breath and the water
they swim in. Our Earth is fragile like a human and people don't know. There are many different
types of environmental pollution (e.g. Water, air, atmospheric.)

If this depletion opens up dangerous and deadly UV Rays from the sun will come into Earth. Air
pollution causes global warming which scientist believe is making the Earth warmer and melting ice
up in the South and North
Pole. The country Holland has had water from the ocean got too high for them and flooded into
towns. Holland spent millions of dollars to put up "dikes" which are big barriers in the water to
prevent their town to be completely submerged.
With the ocean getting deeper coastal cites all around the world could flood, billions of dollars
would be spent to try to prevent it, but in a while it could not be stopped. Instead of waiting and
having to spend all this money why don't we put it together today and try different ways of
preventing air pollution, it would be much easier than all the trouble of stopping flooding.
Water pollution is another major aspect of environmental pollution.
Water pollution is scary because over 75% of our Earth is covered by the ocean.
Water pollution comes from many different sources around the world. One major pollutant that
destroys the ocean is oil spills. The oil from an oil spill kills hundreds of sea animals from fish, to
whales, to birds. Below is a small list of just some of the major oil spills. Notice how many tons
were spilled into our ocean... Notable Oil Spills Date Location Description Tons

Global warming is caused by human activity. This global warming in turn, causes hurricanes. The
hurricanes will destroy the human population main resources. This will lower people into having
less important resources such as: food, shelter and water. Having less resources could lead to
poverty, which is known in developing countries such as: India, Philippines, and Haiti . There are
also changes in the oceans that are being affected. This change occurring could lead to the ocean
over flooding due to contaminating the ocean caused by humans because humans have an impact on
the environment. Humanity needs to cut down the production in the coal industry because people
are burning the coal; this is causing the coal to pollute the air people breath.
To avoid the problem of deforestation, people should stop cutting down the trees in the forest. The
cutting of the trees is causing deforestation, the trees are a helpful resource in the environment.
According to an article by Struck states, "Experts say deforestation threatens a delicate balance in
which forests act as Earth's lungs: absorbing carbon dioxide – the biggest contributor to climate
change – and expelling oxygen" (29). This effect is causing more of the air to become
contaminated by carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a harmful gas that is released into the air. The
trees helps keep down the carbon dioxide in the air; this releases oxygen, so we can breathe clean
air. As the trees are being cut in the forest it releases

Environmental Pollution and Degradation
Environmental degradation
DEFINITION:
Environmental degradation may be defined as the deterioration of the environment through depletion
of resources such as air, water and soil; the destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of wildlife.
Environmental degradation has occurred due to the recent activities in the field of socio–economic,
institutional and technologies. Environmental changes are dependent on many factors including
economic growth, population growth, urbanization, intensification of agriculture, rising energy use
and transportation. Poverty still remains a problem at the root of several environmental problems.

ACID RAIN
Acid rain occurs when sulfur dioxide from coal plant emissions combines with moisture present
in the air. A chemical reaction creates this acid precipitation. Acid rain can acidify and pollute
lakes and streams. It causes similar effects to the soil. If enough acid rain falls in a given
environment, it can acidify the water or soil to a point where no life can be sustained. Plants die
off. The AGRICULTURAL RUNOFF animals that depend upon them disappear. The condition of
the environment deteriorates. Agricultural runoff is a deadly source of pollutants which can
degrade environments,. Surface water washes over the soil and into lakes and streams. When it
does so, it carries the fertilizers and pesticides used on the farm lands into water resources.
Obviously, introducing poisons into waterways will have dire consequences. Fertilizers whether or
not they are organic carry equal risks. URBAN DEVELOPMENT
Urban development is the primary cause of environmental degradation. As populations increased, so
did the need for land for homes and farms. Wetlands were drained. Environmental degradation is one
of most urgent of environmental issues. Depending upon the damage, some environments may never
recover. The plants and animals that inhabited these places will be lost forever. We do not have to
look far to see the impacts of

The detrimental pollution issue regarding the Lake of the Ozarks is one that has been floating
among the Ozarks for about a decade or two. The water quality has gone down the drain in recent
years due to numerous factors such as leaking sewage and trash pollution. This issue is an
environmental concern because it makes the Escherichia coli (E. coli) levels in the water go up,
which can lead to illnesses and deaths of people and animals across the area. There was said to have
been as much as 15,000 gallons of sewage that led directly into the Lake of the Ozarks (DNR). This
is a problem because it is affecting the health of landowners near the area, fishermen, and local
businesses, native wildlife, and aquatic organisms; however, people are asking why it may matter.
Residents care about the pollution issue that is going on at the Lake of the Ozarks because more and
more people are deciding to live by the lake full time, which increases lake pollution even further.
Wildlife such as fish and aquatic plants are also negatively affected by the polluted water. When the
fish or other animals in the water take in the bacteria it can cause an increase in deaths among the
local organisms that have been previously mentioned such as fish and smaller bug–like critters
(DNR). The E. coli levels in the area are shifting because of the pollution issues (Bechtold, 2014).
Actions towards this lake pollution needs to be taken in hand by the local government in order to

The earth is 4.543 billion years old, our ancestors are estimated to date back to six million years,
with modern human life dating back to 200,000 years ago (Reed). The effects of humanity on earth
can be displayed by the increase of pollution within our ecosphere. As our population continues to
increase, so does our carbon footprint upon the earth. On a more localized scale, the Central Valley is
a mecca of poor air quality and elevating pollution levels. An assortment of environmental factors
increases these pollution levels. The Central Valley is a hub for the climate, natural, industrial,
mobile, and agricultural components that equate to this growing pollution problem.
Pollution, otherwise known as PM, or particulate matter, which is essentially any substance that is
not made up of water. PM is most commonly made of dust, ash, smoke, fumes, vapors and mists,
emitted from a source and absorbed into the ozone. Particulate matter that is produced directly
from a source, is called primary PM. Particulate matter that is formed in the atmosphere, by gas, is
called secondary PM. There are two certified health based standards, classifying particulate matter:
PM10, for particles smaller than 10 microns, and PM2.5, for particles smaller than 2.5. Common
PM10 is made up of more course particles, sources include: crushing or grinding operations, soil
stirred up in our valley's vast fields, and dirt roads. PM2.5 is composed of finer particles created by
elements most commonly

For my final project I have chosen to research water quality, primarily focusing my attention to
watersheds on invasive and non–invasive species that can potentially wreak havoc on bodies of
water. There are a total of 944 lakes located here in NH where I live. The largest lake in the state
is Lake Winnipesaukee, which is very popular for many reasons, including its beauty and all the
recreational activities it brings. While most spend their days swimming and boating on the "big
lake" (that's what we locals refer to is as), they are seemingly unaware to the dangers that lurk
beneath the surface threatening economic and ecological losses. The biggest threat to the big
lake is milfoil. Milfoil is an invasive aquatic plant that has been contaminating Lake
Winnipesaukee since it was first spotted in 1965. This topic has always been of concern to me.
It's sad, really. Something so beautiful and natural can be overrun, affecting the livelihood of the
lake and all who enjoy it. My hope is that through education we can greatly reduce the amount of
milfoil in our lakes. The issue of invasive aquatic species and the impact it has on my state are
wide spread. Milfoil, not native to the area or bodies of water, dominate the freshwater systems.
The plants, and fish native to the water bodies are taken over by milfoil, unable to thrive. The
invasive species can impair water quality, and sadly can destroy the aesthetic of the beautiful lakes
that adorn NH. Invasive aquatic species has had

As trees are natural purifiers of air, deforestation worsens the problem of pollution.
With the development of trade and business there has been a corresponding increase in the
transportation system. With the building up of vast network of roads in almost every country, the
number of vehicles has increased many times. Buses, trucks, cars, two–wheelers, and many other
types of vehicles that run on petrol or diesel give out huge quantity of smoke in the air every day.
These smokes contain many harmful chemicals and vitiate the air. Big cities have been the most
affected by air pollution because of presence of large number vehicles. The air in the metropolitan
cities of Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai is so much polluted that many people suffer from
diseases like asthma, cancer, eye burning, skin rashes, etc. Another major cause of air pollution is
the burning of wood and coal in household for cooking. The LPG gas is available in cities and
towns. In rural areas, wood, coal and kerosene are the only source to make fire and cook food. The
rural hearths are therefore another cause of air pollution. The problem is worsened with the fact that
trees are being cut to get fire

Environmental Problems: Air Pollution Essay
Introduction:
Air pollution is among the critical challenges facing modern societies and is one of the most pressing
environing mental problems. Air pollution is accountable for major harmful effects on human
strength, animal survives, natural ecosystems and the man–made environment. It is also responsible
for climate change due to the improved greenhouse effect, acid rain, and the reduction of the ozone
layer that inaugurate important global environmental problems. Air pollution occurs both outdoors
and indoors and is caused by human activities and natural mechanisms. Although air quality

Indoor air pollution:
Indoor air pollution mentions to the amount of chemical, biological and physical pollutants in the air
confidential a building. Indoor air pollution can often be inferior to outdoor air pollution. There is a
extensive range of indoor air pollutant causes in houses including building resources, hard–pressed
wood goods and equipment, dominant heating and cooling systems, several individual care or
household cleaning products, painting colors, solvents, heating or cooking applications (stoves,
wood and gas burning fireplaces, gas fires), tobacco burn, office machineries and a diversity of
other crops used in daily events. (Anastasia Dimitriou and Vasilia Christidou, 2011)
In addition, outdoor pollutants are also found in indoor places, such as radon (a natural trace
component of soil and ground). The main foundation of indoor air pollution is household burning of
coal or biomass for cooking and warming. It is projected that more than half of the world's
population trusts on animal dung, wood, crop waste, or coal to meet their most elementary energy
needs. The main indoor pollutants that can almost be drawn in any home are between others

Introduction: Our planet relies on vegetation as a source of oxygen and cutting it down takes away
that source. This creates an unstable balance where civilization needs to rely on something else for
that missing part of oxygen. To what extent should humans prevent deforestation in major forests
worldwide? Forests cover about 30% of our entire planet and scientists are predicting that within the
next 50–100 years, deforestation will cause all non–protected forests to be cut down (National
Geographic). As stated by the NASA Earth Observatory author and editor Rachel Lindsey, "In the
Amazon alone, scientists estimate that the trees contain more carbon than ten years of human
produced greenhouse gases" (Lindsey). As people cut down trees on a daily basis, the carbon that is
held in the tree is released into the atmosphere, adding to the already present global warming
problem. As the trees are cleared, people tend to replace this previously forested area with pastures
and fields to grow crops on. This is not only bad for the environment, it additionally creates a hotter
climate. Meanwhile, Science News author and previous writer/editor for the Chicago Adler
Planetarium Janet Raloff shows readers that nitrous oxide has a large impact on the ozone of our
planet, contributing to global warming and climate change. The ozone absorbs most of the radiation
coming from the sun to the earth. As trees are cut down, it increases the rate of nitrous oxide
released into the atmosphere

The world faces many issues, but the most important which will affect people living on this planet is
that it is slowly deteriorating. Pollution, excessive greenhouse gases, and the ozone layer depletion
are causing the environment to slowly degrade and cause chronic and fatal health issues such as
cancer. One of the main ways to help the environment be a better place is by having businesses be
more environmentally friendly. Businesses don't have to put a lot of effort in helping the
environment, but instead small changes can make a big difference. Businesses can help the
environment by reducing their carbon emissions, reducing carbon capping, reducing pollution, and
reducing the amount of greenhouse gasses that are being emitted into the air. Businesses helping the
environment could also save money for the company and make the world a better place. Pollution is
one of the main reasons that the earth is deteriorating. According to Major Causes of Environmental
Destruction by the Green Tumble Editorial Team Today, mentions that "our world is becoming
increasingly toxic due to the pollution in our air, water, and land. This not only hurts wildlife and
other organisms that live in natural ecosystems, but it effects the people as well. Air pollution can

Our environment is affected by our daily actions. The earth is plagued with land, air and water

Power–generated plants, oil refineries, chemical plants, and steel mills contribute to about 140

Solid waste such as tires, diapers and plastics are buried in landfills each year. It takes generations
for them to decompose. Today, there are laws that penalize manufacturing plants that dispose
hazardous wastes. These plants dump these hazardous materials in nearby woods or dump them into
streams (this practice was common fifty years ago). We need rain forests for survival. Rain forests
pump fresh oxygen into the atmosphere, protect soil from erosion and absorb carbon dioxide.
Rain forests cover 4.5 billion acres and accounts for 7 percent of the earth's land. The Amazon in
Brazil is the largest rain forest (2 million acres). The fate of today's rain forest is in trouble. A
process called deforestation is the leading problem. Deforestation is the process of cutting down
forests to use the land for farming and grazing cattle. Farmers "slash and burn" forest turning them
into desert land. Brazil promised to implement laws that were tougher to protect the Amazon.
These laws cut deforestation in half. By 1994, the burning started again and in 1996 the burning
was at it's worst. The ozone layer blocks harmful ultraviolet rays, that comes from the sun.

Essay Environmental Pollution

  • 1. Enviromental Pollution Environmental pollution is a term that refers to all the ways by which people pollute their surroundings. People dirty the air with gases and smoke, poison the water with chemicals and other substances, and damage the soil with too many fertilizers and pesticides: People also pollute their surroundings in various other ways. For example, they ruin natural beauty by scattering junk and litter on the land and in the water. They operate machines and motor vehicles that fill the air with disturbing noise. Nearly everyone causes pollution in some way. Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems faced by humanity today. Air, water and soil–all harmed by pollution are necessary to the survival of all living things. Badly polluted ...show more content... The major threat to humanity comes from the development of nuclear sciences. The nuclear experiments worldwide are destroying the atmospheric balance. The poisonous gases, chemicals and dust released into the air fall back on earth as acid rain harming crops and life. This has caused various harmful diseases. Rain water is considered as the purest form of water. Water pollution in lakes, rivers, ponds and other water bodies is caused by surface water which carries a large amount of chemical discharge of industries and inorganic discharge of city sewage. Such impurities are a serious threat to the existence of mankind. Our country faces one more problem i.e. noise pollution. Loud horns during traffic chaos, screaming loudspeakers at different occasions and blasting crackers that almost make one deaf are killing the peaceful silence. Use of silencers, abiding by proper traffic regulations and checking excessive use of public speaker systems can help in reducing noise–pollution. This is the time of implement the steps for environmental Protection. It has been rightly said that there is something in this world money can't buy, such as beautiful scenery and fresh Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Environmental Pollution Essay "Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to be dispersed because we have been ignorant of their value." – R. Buckminster Fuller. A bus company in Great Britain has taken this quote into full effect. The Bath Bus Company has created a first ever "Bio–Bus" and will transfer its passengers between the Bath and Bristol Airport. This 40–seat bus runs completely on biomethane gas which is generated through food waste and human waste. This bus fills two needs: transporting passengers and improving air quality. By recycling an undesirable product, this bus company has created something that improves their society (Pollution Control). There are many more examples of countries and communities developing a product or plan to improve the quality of their life. In fact, environmental protection has dated back to the beginning of ancient civilizations and has continued to be an important concept in today's society. George Perkins Marsh, an American diplomat and philologist, drafted a book titled Man and Nature. In his writings, he explained the downfall of many ancient civilizations was caused by environmental abuse. From deforesting hillsides to eroding their soils, many of the early civilizations destroyed their natural fertility. As we look back in history, it is important that we learn from our mistakes. The Civilian Conservation Corps, created in 1933, was developed as a public relief group, targeted for single, unemployed men. As part of FDR's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Global Pollution Essay Pollution is a growing issue in the world and is the major cause that contributes to many environmental problems. What is usually classified as pollution, what kind of pollution is present in the world, and what the people are doing to deal with this pollution issue in the world. There are several problems with world pollution that are associated with global warming and include waste disposal, water pollution, and air pollution. These things are usually caused by people on the planet who produce waste. This has been a growing complication and is (omit) now been taken as a serious issue. Solutions to these situations have been considered to keep the Earth and all the things in it. One of the situations that are involved with world...show more content... "The problem of exposure to hazardous materials remains, except that it is spread over a wider area" (Newton). Illegal waste disposal is also another reason that contributes to world pollution. It may be defined as the improper disposal of waste at any site other than a regularly licensed landfill or other facility. Usually this kind of disposal is done because people are unaware of the law and are unwilling to take the time or refuse to pay the costs for properly disposing materials, or are in possession of toxic materials that may cause legal problems. (Watts) "Illegal waste dumping ranges from being a simple nuisance to a serious health hazard and often occur in isolated or desolate places. In the United States, illegal waste dumping is often thought of as a local problem; however, the motives and types of people who engage in it–including multinational corporations, criminal syndicates, and individuals–persist throughout the world" (Watts). The dangers of disposing of waste illegally are often unknown by some corporations or even ignored. By not getting rid of waste properly it encourages more dumping, so a small problem may rapidly become a major hazard. Another danger is the health risks posed by the type of material being discarded. Dangerous materials commonly dumped illegally include such medical wastes as used syringes Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Essay On Environmental Pollution 1.1Environmental Pollution For many centuries, environmental pollution had been a fact of life but it transforms to a real problem when industrial revolution began. Environmental pollution is described to be the contamination of the physical and biological components of the earth/atmosphere system to such an extent that normal environmental processes are adversely affected according to Kemp (1998). Wikipedia (2008) defined Pollution to be an introduction of contaminants into the environment that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or that damage the environment which can come in the form of chemical substances, or energy such as noise, heat or light. Whereas Pollutants can be naturally occurring substances or...show more content... Improper handling of solid waste and indiscriminate disposal in open spaces, road margins, tank beds, and etcetera, give rise to numerous potential risks to the environment and to human health. Direct health risks mainly concern those working in the field without using proper gloves, uniforms, and etcetera; a high percentage of waste workers and individuals who live near or on disposal sites are infected with gastrointestinal parasites, worms, and related organisms (SWMM, 2000). For the public, the main risks to health are indirect and related to poor water, land, and air quality. In addition, infrequent collection of waste provides an attractive breeding ground for flies and rats (SWMM, 2000). The most obvious environmental damage caused by solid waste is aesthetic, i.e. waste that litter public areas is ugly and smelly. A more serious risk is the transfer of pollution to ground water and land as well as the pollution of air from improper burning of waste. Many waste activities generate greenhouse gases; e.g., landfills generate methane and refuse fleets are significant sources of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. Open burning dumpsites produce volatilised heavy metals (e.g. mercury and lead), dioxins, and furan. Leachate from unlined and uncovered dumpsites contaminates surface and ground waters (Cointreau, 2006). A damaged local environment will first hit the most Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay about Pollution Pollution Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment. It is a major problem in America and as well as the world. Pollution not only damages the environment, but damages us also. It has cause many problems ranging from lung cancer to the greenhouse effect. It is all among us but we continue to live in our own filth. What is the reason behind this flawed logic? In this paper I will examine the problems and solutions for this issue. Automobiles are undeniable the greatest source of pollution. The noise pollution created by cars is immense. Another polluting effect of cars is the heat it creates. This heat makes it unpleasant to be near the car while its running. And of course the most famous...show more content... American citizens throw away millions of tons of garbage each year, and this trash has to go somewhere. While there are projects underway to clean and reuse this refuse most of it gets dumped into huge landfills. These landfills are disgusting festering blisters on our country's landscape. But people continue to consume and throw away more and more in the name of convenience. As they see it, when things get old, throw it away and get a new one. They blame the government for the trash problem, but the truth blame should be placed on themselves. The last great source of pollution lays in the businesses. Although not common, businesses have been known to dump their waste products into streams, lakes, and rivers. This may seem like a relatively small occurrence that really is not your concern, but you're wrong. Each time one of these companies pollutes there are horrible consequences to pay. Mutations, destroyed ecosystems, and human death have all occurred as a direct result of illegal dumping. It contaminates our drinking water and soil. It causes entire communities of humans (not to mention animals) to move on to new places not to return for at least a century. The pollutants dumped by industry are so concentrated that a single barrel can destroy an entire lake's ecosystem. Not only do companies dump chemicals, but also hot water. This hot water kills most life it comes into contact with, but also causes an overgrowth Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Abstract On Environmental Pollution Abstract Environmental pollution is anything that can cause harm to the environment. Pollution is any undesired alteration of the environment and is often caused by human activities (Mader, 2016, pg. 552). Types of human pollution would be air, water, soil, radioactive, thermal, noise, and light. Each of these forms of pollution has been known to cause the enormous amount of concern for the environment. There are laws in place now that are limiting pollution and to help control the issue. Environmental pollution is a serious problem we are facing globally. It is the debate concerning pollution, which we have been pondering for the past century. Prior to the industrial revolution, scientists thought that the atmosphere was untouched by man–made pollutants until they found air bubbles hidden in the core of Greenland's ice shelf (Stromberg). After finding this essential development, scientist began to reconsider the initial cause of pollution and how to decrease the lasting effects of it. With this discovery, pollution was traced back to Ancient Rome and it was decided that globally we needed a new approach for dealing with this problem. There are numerous types of pollution and they each have a devastating effect on the global climate. A scientist has been working on ways to re–direct the negative effects of pollution and at the same time encourage people to try to find ways to do that part to help with this effort. We all can find some way to improve the world and decrease pollution. The problems with air pollution seem to be one of the largest most discussed situations. The Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) air pollution is the release of pollutants into the air that is damaging human health and world. There are many forms of air pollution and smog and soot are two of them. These two are discussed more when dissecting this problem due to them being the most common forms of air position, which are also the most detrimental of them all. When the sunlight and emissions from fossil fuels interact that is how smog is created. The creation of soot formed from smoke, dust, allergens and other particles are spread throughout the air in gas or solid form. Methane is also a huge component of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Essay On Environmental Pollution The environmental issue I choose is pollution. There is different types of pollution. There is water pollution, air pollution, soil pollution, thermal pollution, radioactive pollution, noise pollution, and light pollution. Every type of pollution is bad and it is causing health issues and even worst, deaths. Pollution is A very serious subject that is harmful to people and the environment. It is killing A lot of people. 4.6 million people die each year from pollution. Each year 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage, stormwater, and industrial waste are dumped into US water.Pollution is one of the most biggest global killers affecting over 100 million people. Over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals are killed by pollution every year. Approximately 40% of lakes in America are too polluted for fishing, aquatic life, or swimming. Pollution occurs when pollutants contaminate the natural surroundings. Pollution disturbs our ecosystem. Air Pollution is the most dangerous forms of pollution. It occurs due to many of reasons, excessive burning of fuel, cooking, driving and other types of activities that are similar. They release A huge amount of chemical substances in the air everyday; these pollute the air. Also smoke from chimneys, factories, vehicles or burning basically occurs due to coal burning. Air pollution is breaking down our ozone layer. There is different types of pollution but environmental pollution has been around for centuries and it is affecting the environment. People should care about this topic because pollution is a serious problem and it causes many deaths and illnesses. The worst types of pollution are air pollution and water pollution, they don't only harm our environment but also our health. It's really scary to think about because around 15,000 people in the world each day die because of water pollution and 2.4 million people in the world die each year because of air pollution. So this is a big environmental issue. The causes of water pollution is water and sewage waste. World population is increasing each year. This is causing huge environmental and health damage. Most water pollution doesn't begin in the water it starts with what stuff filters and enters through the water. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay On Environmental Pollution Pollutants are impacting aquatic organisms distributed by daily human activities and natural occurrences. An extensive amount of pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, and hydrocarbons can result in direct significant damage, e.g. death. However lower levels of these harmful substances can be stored in an organism and increase as it continues and follows up the food chain, a process called biomagnification or bioaccumulation, having the greatest effect on the top predator of that food chain. A common result of the pollutants can lead to stress, changing of theimmune system, inhibit lysozyme activity, damage gills, metabolism, and growth. Other factors include an excessive amount of nutrients in the environment. Nitrogen can make its way into aquatic ecosystems when there is an increase in nitrous oxide in the air, allowing eutrophication. Algae andbacteria feed off the nitrogen, so a high number of these organisms appear and use oxygen around them as the feed, causing hypoxic zones, or dead zones. Acidification, an increase in the ecosystem's pH acidity from acid rain, which occurs from an increase in CO2 from air pollution. Aquatic organisms have a range of tolerance, and water with high acidic pH will lead the organism out of the range of tolerance, resulting in stress of the organism, and eventually death. Further studies are being pursuited to see larger impacts of globalized pollution on aquatic species and their ecosystems. Keywords: Pollutants, pesticides, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Environmental Pollution Essay Environmental Pollution ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION Automobiles like these are around the world everyday, and their exhaust destroys our air everyday. Our environment is a major aspect of our life today. Many of us don't take our Earth seriously and think that as long as pollution doesn't hurt them they can go ahead and throw garbage on the ground or spill oil down the drain. Well to many people have that theory and they are killing off our Earth and also physically harming themselves from the air they breath and the water they swim in. Our Earth is fragile like a human and people don't know. There are many different types of environmental pollution (e.g. Water, air, atmospheric.) Scientists believe that all...show more content... If this depletion opens up dangerous and deadly UV Rays from the sun will come into Earth. Air pollution causes global warming which scientist believe is making the Earth warmer and melting ice up in the South and North Pole. The country Holland has had water from the ocean got too high for them and flooded into towns. Holland spent millions of dollars to put up "dikes" which are big barriers in the water to prevent their town to be completely submerged. With the ocean getting deeper coastal cites all around the world could flood, billions of dollars would be spent to try to prevent it, but in a while it could not be stopped. Instead of waiting and having to spend all this money why don't we put it together today and try different ways of preventing air pollution, it would be much easier than all the trouble of stopping flooding. Water pollution is another major aspect of environmental pollution. Water pollution is scary because over 75% of our Earth is covered by the ocean. Water pollution comes from many different sources around the world. One major pollutant that destroys the ocean is oil spills. The oil from an oil spill kills hundreds of sea animals from fish, to whales, to birds. Below is a small list of just some of the major oil spills. Notice how many tons were spilled into our ocean... Notable Oil Spills Date Location Description Tons Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Environmental Pollution Essay Global warming is caused by human activity. This global warming in turn, causes hurricanes. The hurricanes will destroy the human population main resources. This will lower people into having less important resources such as: food, shelter and water. Having less resources could lead to poverty, which is known in developing countries such as: India, Philippines, and Haiti . There are also changes in the oceans that are being affected. This change occurring could lead to the ocean over flooding due to contaminating the ocean caused by humans because humans have an impact on the environment. Humanity needs to cut down the production in the coal industry because people are burning the coal; this is causing the coal to pollute the air people breath. To avoid the problem of deforestation, people should stop cutting down the trees in the forest. The cutting of the trees is causing deforestation, the trees are a helpful resource in the environment. According to an article by Struck states, "Experts say deforestation threatens a delicate balance in which forests act as Earth's lungs: absorbing carbon dioxide – the biggest contributor to climate change – and expelling oxygen" (29). This effect is causing more of the air to become contaminated by carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a harmful gas that is released into the air. The trees helps keep down the carbon dioxide in the air; this releases oxygen, so we can breathe clean air. As the trees are being cut in the forest it releases Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Environmental Pollution and Degradation Environmental degradation DEFINITION: Environmental degradation may be defined as the deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as air, water and soil; the destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of wildlife. Environmental degradation has occurred due to the recent activities in the field of socio–economic, institutional and technologies. Environmental changes are dependent on many factors including economic growth, population growth, urbanization, intensification of agriculture, rising energy use and transportation. Poverty still remains a problem at the root of several environmental problems. Introduction to environmental issues problems There are innumerable issues and problems faced by the environment...show more content... ACID RAIN Acid rain occurs when sulfur dioxide from coal plant emissions combines with moisture present in the air. A chemical reaction creates this acid precipitation. Acid rain can acidify and pollute lakes and streams. It causes similar effects to the soil. If enough acid rain falls in a given environment, it can acidify the water or soil to a point where no life can be sustained. Plants die off. The AGRICULTURAL RUNOFF animals that depend upon them disappear. The condition of the environment deteriorates. Agricultural runoff is a deadly source of pollutants which can degrade environments,. Surface water washes over the soil and into lakes and streams. When it does so, it carries the fertilizers and pesticides used on the farm lands into water resources. Obviously, introducing poisons into waterways will have dire consequences. Fertilizers whether or not they are organic carry equal risks. URBAN DEVELOPMENT Urban development is the primary cause of environmental degradation. As populations increased, so did the need for land for homes and farms. Wetlands were drained. Environmental degradation is one of most urgent of environmental issues. Depending upon the damage, some environments may never recover. The plants and animals that inhabited these places will be lost forever. We do not have to look far to see the impacts of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Environmental Pollution The detrimental pollution issue regarding the Lake of the Ozarks is one that has been floating among the Ozarks for about a decade or two. The water quality has gone down the drain in recent years due to numerous factors such as leaking sewage and trash pollution. This issue is an environmental concern because it makes the Escherichia coli (E. coli) levels in the water go up, which can lead to illnesses and deaths of people and animals across the area. There was said to have been as much as 15,000 gallons of sewage that led directly into the Lake of the Ozarks (DNR). This is a problem because it is affecting the health of landowners near the area, fishermen, and local businesses, native wildlife, and aquatic organisms; however, people are asking why it may matter. Residents care about the pollution issue that is going on at the Lake of the Ozarks because more and more people are deciding to live by the lake full time, which increases lake pollution even further. Wildlife such as fish and aquatic plants are also negatively affected by the polluted water. When the fish or other animals in the water take in the bacteria it can cause an increase in deaths among the local organisms that have been previously mentioned such as fish and smaller bug–like critters (DNR). The E. coli levels in the area are shifting because of the pollution issues (Bechtold, 2014). Actions towards this lake pollution needs to be taken in hand by the local government in order to solve any of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Earth Pollution Essay The earth is 4.543 billion years old, our ancestors are estimated to date back to six million years, with modern human life dating back to 200,000 years ago (Reed). The effects of humanity on earth can be displayed by the increase of pollution within our ecosphere. As our population continues to increase, so does our carbon footprint upon the earth. On a more localized scale, the Central Valley is a mecca of poor air quality and elevating pollution levels. An assortment of environmental factors increases these pollution levels. The Central Valley is a hub for the climate, natural, industrial, mobile, and agricultural components that equate to this growing pollution problem. Pollution, otherwise known as PM, or particulate matter, which is essentially any substance that is not made up of water. PM is most commonly made of dust, ash, smoke, fumes, vapors and mists, emitted from a source and absorbed into the ozone. Particulate matter that is produced directly from a source, is called primary PM. Particulate matter that is formed in the atmosphere, by gas, is called secondary PM. There are two certified health based standards, classifying particulate matter: PM10, for particles smaller than 10 microns, and PM2.5, for particles smaller than 2.5. Common PM10 is made up of more course particles, sources include: crushing or grinding operations, soil stirred up in our valley's vast fields, and dirt roads. PM2.5 is composed of finer particles created by elements most commonly Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Environmental Pollution For my final project I have chosen to research water quality, primarily focusing my attention to watersheds on invasive and non–invasive species that can potentially wreak havoc on bodies of water. There are a total of 944 lakes located here in NH where I live. The largest lake in the state is Lake Winnipesaukee, which is very popular for many reasons, including its beauty and all the recreational activities it brings. While most spend their days swimming and boating on the "big lake" (that's what we locals refer to is as), they are seemingly unaware to the dangers that lurk beneath the surface threatening economic and ecological losses. The biggest threat to the big lake is milfoil. Milfoil is an invasive aquatic plant that has been contaminating Lake Winnipesaukee since it was first spotted in 1965. This topic has always been of concern to me. It's sad, really. Something so beautiful and natural can be overrun, affecting the livelihood of the lake and all who enjoy it. My hope is that through education we can greatly reduce the amount of milfoil in our lakes. The issue of invasive aquatic species and the impact it has on my state are wide spread. Milfoil, not native to the area or bodies of water, dominate the freshwater systems. The plants, and fish native to the water bodies are taken over by milfoil, unable to thrive. The invasive species can impair water quality, and sadly can destroy the aesthetic of the beautiful lakes that adorn NH. Invasive aquatic species has had Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. In a broader term environment means everything that surrounds us. It includes living or biotic life, e.g. plants and animals and non–living or biotic components like air, water and soil. Environmental pollution refers to degradation of air and water by mixing of harmful and undesirable pollutants in them. Today, pollution has become the biggest global problem because it has grown in magnitude and threatens to endanger all life on the living planet. As a matter of fact the gravity of situation created by pollution worldwide has been voiced at many national and international levels by various dignitaries and organisations to emphasise the need to realise the problem in all its seriousness and take whatever measures necessary in all earnest....show more content... As trees are natural purifiers of air, deforestation worsens the problem of pollution. With the development of trade and business there has been a corresponding increase in the transportation system. With the building up of vast network of roads in almost every country, the number of vehicles has increased many times. Buses, trucks, cars, two–wheelers, and many other types of vehicles that run on petrol or diesel give out huge quantity of smoke in the air every day. These smokes contain many harmful chemicals and vitiate the air. Big cities have been the most affected by air pollution because of presence of large number vehicles. The air in the metropolitan cities of Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai is so much polluted that many people suffer from diseases like asthma, cancer, eye burning, skin rashes, etc. Another major cause of air pollution is the burning of wood and coal in household for cooking. The LPG gas is available in cities and towns. In rural areas, wood, coal and kerosene are the only source to make fire and cook food. The rural hearths are therefore another cause of air pollution. The problem is worsened with the fact that trees are being cut to get fire Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Environmental Problems: Air Pollution Essay Introduction: Air pollution is among the critical challenges facing modern societies and is one of the most pressing environing mental problems. Air pollution is accountable for major harmful effects on human strength, animal survives, natural ecosystems and the man–made environment. It is also responsible for climate change due to the improved greenhouse effect, acid rain, and the reduction of the ozone layer that inaugurate important global environmental problems. Air pollution occurs both outdoors and indoors and is caused by human activities and natural mechanisms. Although air quality degradation because of air pollution is a global problem that threatens humanity's wellbeing overall, it is largely associated with environmental bias....show more content... (Anastasia Dimitriou and Vasilia Christidou, 2011) Indoor air pollution: Indoor air pollution mentions to the amount of chemical, biological and physical pollutants in the air confidential a building. Indoor air pollution can often be inferior to outdoor air pollution. There is a extensive range of indoor air pollutant causes in houses including building resources, hard–pressed wood goods and equipment, dominant heating and cooling systems, several individual care or household cleaning products, painting colors, solvents, heating or cooking applications (stoves, wood and gas burning fireplaces, gas fires), tobacco burn, office machineries and a diversity of other crops used in daily events. (Anastasia Dimitriou and Vasilia Christidou, 2011) In addition, outdoor pollutants are also found in indoor places, such as radon (a natural trace component of soil and ground). The main foundation of indoor air pollution is household burning of coal or biomass for cooking and warming. It is projected that more than half of the world's population trusts on animal dung, wood, crop waste, or coal to meet their most elementary energy needs. The main indoor pollutants that can almost be drawn in any home are between others formaldehyde, asbestos, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Environmental Pollution And Global Warming Introduction Environmental pollution and global warming are one of the biggest problems the world faces today. It is an issue that troubles us economically, physically and everyday of our lives in any field such as construction of buildings. This В¬express the need of green buildings which is an environmentally sustainable building, designed, constructed and operated to minimise the total environmental impacts. By using these buildings people can save money, increase comfort and create healthier environments for them to live and work, using improved indoor air quality, natural daylight, and thermal comfort. Therefore, this literature review will examine the importance, cost affordability, construction challenges and attitudinal issues of people in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kerala in India and in Malaysia. Methodology Manoj (2013), Soni (2014), as well as Lesley and Mohammed (2013) all used a qualitative approach in their research. The study area of the first article is in Ernakulam in Kerala, study area of second article is in Trissur in Kerala while the third article study was executed in whole Malaysia. Study pattern of Manoj (2013) is to conduct interviews of respondents included 210 households which comes in the category of lower and middle income households. While Soni (2014) used a descriptive–cum–analytical approach, the data collected from both primary and secondary sources are suitably analysed which helps to analyse the awareness and identify the attitudinal issues of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Environmental Pollution Introduction: Our planet relies on vegetation as a source of oxygen and cutting it down takes away that source. This creates an unstable balance where civilization needs to rely on something else for that missing part of oxygen. To what extent should humans prevent deforestation in major forests worldwide? Forests cover about 30% of our entire planet and scientists are predicting that within the next 50–100 years, deforestation will cause all non–protected forests to be cut down (National Geographic). As stated by the NASA Earth Observatory author and editor Rachel Lindsey, "In the Amazon alone, scientists estimate that the trees contain more carbon than ten years of human produced greenhouse gases" (Lindsey). As people cut down trees on a daily basis, the carbon that is held in the tree is released into the atmosphere, adding to the already present global warming problem. As the trees are cleared, people tend to replace this previously forested area with pastures and fields to grow crops on. This is not only bad for the environment, it additionally creates a hotter climate. Meanwhile, Science News author and previous writer/editor for the Chicago Adler Planetarium Janet Raloff shows readers that nitrous oxide has a large impact on the ozone of our planet, contributing to global warming and climate change. The ozone absorbs most of the radiation coming from the sun to the earth. As trees are cut down, it increases the rate of nitrous oxide released into the atmosphere Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Environmental Pollution The world faces many issues, but the most important which will affect people living on this planet is that it is slowly deteriorating. Pollution, excessive greenhouse gases, and the ozone layer depletion are causing the environment to slowly degrade and cause chronic and fatal health issues such as cancer. One of the main ways to help the environment be a better place is by having businesses be more environmentally friendly. Businesses don't have to put a lot of effort in helping the environment, but instead small changes can make a big difference. Businesses can help the environment by reducing their carbon emissions, reducing carbon capping, reducing pollution, and reducing the amount of greenhouse gasses that are being emitted into the air. Businesses helping the environment could also save money for the company and make the world a better place. Pollution is one of the main reasons that the earth is deteriorating. According to Major Causes of Environmental Destruction by the Green Tumble Editorial Team Today, mentions that "our world is becoming increasingly toxic due to the pollution in our air, water, and land. This not only hurts wildlife and other organisms that live in natural ecosystems, but it effects the people as well. Air pollution can have many environmental impacts, it causes acid rain which is precipitation containing harmful amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids. Acid rain damages tree and causes soils and water bodies to acidify, making the water Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Environmental Pollution Essays Environmental Pollution Our environment is affected by our daily actions. The earth is plagued with land, air and water pollution. Some of the problems we face on earth are: deforestation, nuclear waste, acid rain, global warming, overpopulation and some animals are endangered. Air pollution has many different sources. Power–generated plants, oil refineries, chemical plants, and steel mills contribute to about 140 million tons of pollutants into the air every year. Automobiles account for at least 80 percent, ofair pollution; the heaviest polluter. Another type of air pollution is acid rain. Acid rain is formed when sulfur and nitrogen are distributed from factories, automobiles and power plants. The sulfur and ...show more content... Solid waste such as tires, diapers and plastics are buried in landfills each year. It takes generations for them to decompose. Today, there are laws that penalize manufacturing plants that dispose hazardous wastes. These plants dump these hazardous materials in nearby woods or dump them into streams (this practice was common fifty years ago). We need rain forests for survival. Rain forests pump fresh oxygen into the atmosphere, protect soil from erosion and absorb carbon dioxide. Rain forests cover 4.5 billion acres and accounts for 7 percent of the earth's land. The Amazon in Brazil is the largest rain forest (2 million acres). The fate of today's rain forest is in trouble. A process called deforestation is the leading problem. Deforestation is the process of cutting down forests to use the land for farming and grazing cattle. Farmers "slash and burn" forest turning them into desert land. Brazil promised to implement laws that were tougher to protect the Amazon. These laws cut deforestation in half. By 1994, the burning started again and in 1996 the burning was at it's worst. The ozone layer blocks harmful ultraviolet rays, that comes from the sun. Chemicals released from the earth are depleting the ozone layer. Skin cancer is on the rise as a result of the depletion of the ozone layer. Scientist states that every 1 percent of depletion of the ozone layer, the rate of skin cancer will rise 5 Get more content on HelpWriting.net
