Skepticism about the external world is one of the most widely discussed arguments in the history of philosophy. Barry Stroud defines skepticism as the
idea that we cannot have knowledge about the external world (Stroud, page 1). This conclusion is the result of Rene Descartes' Dream Argument and
has been a topic of discussion ever since. No matter how we attack the argument, it seems that we inevitably arrive at skepticism. In this paper, I will
argue that the skeptical conclusion is true and why it seems to be compelling as a necessary condition for knowledge. I will describe the Dream

external world will fail to disprove the skeptical conclusion due to its lack of justified belief. Although I am intuitively inclined to deny the skeptical
argument, I cannot logically do so but will argue against full–blown skepticism and explain how mild skepticism is a more approachable route to

Use of Rhetorical Appeals in Julius Caesar: Brutus vs Antony
In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Brutus and Antony attempt to persuade the audience of their position on the death of Caesar. While Brutus explains that
his death was necessary, Antony claims that Caesar was not deserving of his demise. However, though Brutus does have ample credibility and taps into
the emotional link with his audience to some extent, he does not convey as powerful of an argument as Antony, as he fails to provide sufficient factual
evidence. Antony, on the other hand, utilizes logical argumentation with solid evidence, creates an emotional connection with his audience, and
maintains credibility in order to support his own argument. Through this, it can be seen that Antony's use of rhetorical appeals and devices is superior...
Additionally, Brutus presents a series of rhetorical questions that have no grounds to persuade the audience. He asks, "Who is here so rude that would
not be a Roman?" Here he makes it clear that one who does not understand the reason behind Caesar's necessary death should not be considered a
Roman. But, the audience, once again, does not have reason to acknowledge this statement as Brutus does not have sufficient evidence that the murder
was, in fact, a necessity.
Contrastingly, Antony creates a strong argument by augmenting his credibility and using logical evidence. To make himself more believable, he
concedes, "But yesterday the word of Caesar might Have stood against the world." By acknowledging that Caesar may have done a little wrong, the
audience realizes that Antony has considered both sides of the argument. He elaborates on the noble accomplishments of Julius Caesar, saying, "He hath
brought many captives home to Rome, Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill." By pointing out emphasizing the good that Caesar did, he defies
the motives behind his murder.
Antony also utilizes rhetorical devices, not only to support his own argument, but to passively challenge Brutus's. Like Brutus, he uses rhetorical
questions such as, "What cause withholds you then to mourn for him (Caesar)?" This gives the audience a chance to ponder the injustice of Caesar's
murder and realize that he was noble and undeserving of it. Antony also uses

In each module, I have tried to incorporate the eight critical thinking guidelines into my posts. In particular, I have tried to be willing to wonder
about each topic, and I have always tried to ask relevant questions to keep the discussion going. I feel as though I was able to embody this
guideline well in Module Five. My first instinct was to completely dismiss hypnotism and hypnotherapy, but I allowed myself to wonder about the
possibility of both being real. In my research, I discovered that hypnotherapy was indeed a viable option for some disorders, which I would never
have learned had I kept my mind closed. In my responses I definitely tried to keep the discussion going by asking questions that would allow the
original poster to elaborate upon their opinions. Most of all, I attempted to ask questions that would allow for further discussion, not just a simple
agreement or disagreement with my statements. Rather than taking my fellow students' statements as fact, I wondered about the absolute truth of their
statements. For example, Sara Walsh discussed the similarity of hypnosis and placebo, and in my response I wondered if "...the comparison between
hypnotherapy and a placebo effect necessarily negate the effects of hypnotherapy?" In allowing myself to wonder about hypnotherapy, it opened my

One of the main objectives working as Creative Media lecture is to create a classroom environment that is conducive towards learning while still
fostering student creativity. This is balancing act and one which I have been continuously developing since starting in Further Education teaching over
a year and a half ago.
Sir Ken Robinson (2006) argues that our educational systems "stigmatise mistakes" and students have "become frightened of being wrong." He goes

Aspect of teaching to be addressed
Petty (2009, p. 162) discusses that teacher talk takes up 60% of most lessons and that it is a convenient method as little preparation or resources are
required. This traditional teaching method usually measures student success on how well they recall information. The focus is on reproducing one
correct answer and this does little in the way of developing student's ability to question and investigate a topic themselves. However, the Inquiry Based
Learning (IBL) approach is more dynamic than this traditional method as it activity involves the students in their own learning. Rather than students
learning passively from the teacher and remembering facts they instead construct their own understanding and knowledge. Students develop a deeper
understanding and become better critical and creative thinkers. Through personal reflection I began to realise that I was not giving my own students
the opportunity to take ownership of their learning. Therefore it is this aspect of my teaching that I would like to develop to help facilitate a more open
IBL approach. Dewey's (1998) Constructive Theory argues that people construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world through
experiences and then reflect on them.

The Thought of life after death is comforting for some. For others, there is no life after death. Human beings are the only animals on earth who

According to the Threat Interpretation Model proposed by Todd et al. (2015) recently, the degree of perceived threat of pain has an impact on whether
an individual will demonstrate cognitive bias towards the stimuli. The association between perceived threat and cognitive bias is mediated by sustained
attention. When threat is in medium level, chronic pain patients have difficult disengaging from pain–related stimuli while healthy individuals can
disengage quickly in order to maintain positive mood. However, when the level of threat is either very low or very high, chronic pain patients tend to

Rhetorical Analysis Essay: "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" Nicholas Carr's article on The Atlantic asks us to question what effect the Internet has on
our brains. At the time this article was written, the Internet was becoming more and more apart of our daily routine as many find themselves using it
for work purposes or simply for leisure. Carr, as a seemingly literary type himself, says, "Computers are changing the normal thinking process" causing
not only him but also many others to struggle reading. Nicholas Carr wrote this article to bring to attention the webs effect on our mind and how it has
turned us into page skimmers and information decoders who can no longer focus on reading a piece in its entirety. In "Is Google Making us Stupid?"

In Patrick Henry's "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" speech, he uses different rhetorical strategies to support his argument. One of those
strategies is Pathos, his appeal to emotion for war. Another is his use of tone, angry and determined, during his argument. Finally, there is his use
of allusions to help understand his argument. Pathos, tone, and allusions help the reader understand his need for war against the British. Henry
appeals to emotion when he keeps returning to the fact that they should take arms against Great Britain. Henry talks about hope as one of his

have been debated the most. Selective search for evidence is a kind of biases which, in psychology, is also known as the confirmation bias. This is

In Chapter 7 of The Unpersuadables: Adventures with the Enemies of Science, Will Storr addressed his time spent exploring homeopathy and
skepticism. First, he wrote about his interview with Gemma, an activist for homeopathy whose interview with BBC Radio Five Live went viral online
after someone edited a rubber duck saying 'Quack' over her every time she spoke. Since the editor of Gemma's video was presumably a Skeptic, Storr

Ullman and Lewis are a perfect example of this. When both men were prompted to discuss Professor Aijing Shang's study on homeopathy, they
interpreted it in two completely different ways. Ullman claimed that the study was unfairly skewed against homeopathy whereas Lewis claimed that
the study was credible and that Shang was justified in the steps he took while conducting the experiment. When Storr asked Lewis if Ullman was at
least partially justified in his interpretation, Lewis responded, "Dana is always wrong. So, no, I wouldn't go that far" (Storr 115). A study meant to
produce one whole truth managed to benefit the biases of two opposing arguments due to the effects of confirmation bias – in this, the whole truth was
lost. This raises the question: if the whole truth is lost, did it exist to begin with? Is anything true without our making it so? Storr, unfortunately, does
not attempt to answer this question in Chapter 7. He simply acknowledges its presence. In doing so, however, he revitalized the overarching theme of
confirmation bias and truth in the book, and I believe that was done with intention. Each chapter thus far has detailed Storr's journey into increasingly
complex levels of this theme without ever reaching a true conclusion, but this chapter set a different dynamic: it insinuated that, perhaps, there is no
true conclusion to be found.

of Parenting Magazine and found an article on child development. Kathleen Parker's article, "First Three Years Aren't That Critical" tells us that parents
today are putting to much emphasis on what the media and medical journals are saying, instead of using common sense. The article emphasizes that
parents are going overboard on these new studies using good argumentative techniques. Although I found not all of what she said was accurate, I still

By acknowledging the other viewpoint, the author can still present her argument and not offend the reader so much that they would quickly side
against her. Using these techniques, the author effectively attracts the readers' attention and explains the main point of the rest of the article.
I noticed that in this article, Parker challenges the media's representation on the effectiveness of early childhood development by stating that you
should not change how you raise your child based on trivial news articles. Parker lists sources: Newsweek, the Clintons, and books about early
development, as causes for parents to go overboard on developing their young children. The point that Parker is trying to get across is that these
articles are not reasons for society to change their parental habits. The author is saying that the news articles can not prove one way or the other that
teaching your child early in life gives them the advantage. Just because an article says that in some cases child development is effective, it doesn't mean
that it is true or appropriate to change the way you are teaching your two–year old. Parker's technique is to debunk the idea of these sources, and to get

The author maintains that observational centered method of studying is not accurate, rather interview centered method bears more accurate result of
study. The argument, stated in a dubious way, fails to mentions some key factors and reveals some instances of poor reasoning, on the basis of which
it could be evaluated. However, in order to fully evaluate this we need to have significant amount of additional evidences. The argument is much
weaker than it seems. First of all, Dr. Karp's assumption is based on 20 years ago study which might not be true in the present situation. Over the

completely undermine Dr Kelps argument if it turned out that the children said how much they miss their parents or how their parents left them for in
communal environment. Therefore, its impossible to conclude without knowing their true response to the questions. So without convincing answers,
the reader is left with the impressions that the claims made by the author are more of a wishful thinking rather than substantive evidence. Clearly, from
