2. News Values Definition
• News Values are rules which are used by
media companies that determine how much
attention and prominence to give a story.
3. BIAS
• News reporters may only give a one sided
view of an event, they may only show the
event from one angle, cutting out other
factors that would give the audience an
alternate opinion.
4. Specific BIAS
• Omission-Leaving out information.
• Selection of sources-Selecting sources to support one view
more than another.
• Story selection-Showing stories that agree with a certain
political view and leaving out opposing stories.
• Placement-Placing stories in a certain part of a
newspaper, depending on the editors view on how
important they are.
• Labelling-Labelling a politician with one view an “Expert”
while labelling another politician with an
alternate/opposing view with no label or just their job title.
• Spin-Making one side of a story look better than another.
5. Angle
• Liberal: Open to equality and Liberty.
• Conservative: Holding traditional values or
keeping things the same.
• The angle is the point of view a story is reported
from. For example: a story about a man killing a
poor man in self defence. A liberal point of view
may state that the poor man was dying from
hunger and just wanted food. Where as the
Conservative point of view may say that it was all
self defence and the poor man should of got a
job.
6. Liberal/Conservative
• The Sun, The Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph
are all Conservative Newspapers.
• The Guardian and the Independent are
Liberal.
7. Biased Story’s
• News Story: World Cup 2022: Uefa members back winter
tournament in Qatar
• The BBC’s must have news values which determine that this story is
more important than others. This means that their news values
must be to give more coverage on stories to do with football than
other issues that could be more important.
• The story is a bit bias, giving only one side to the story. They pull
quotes and talk to people who said that the world cup in 2022
should be moved to winter and merely stated that others disagreed
with this change. They did not talk or go in depth with anyone that
wanted to justify the world cup staying in the summer position.
• This means that they selected sources to create the view that
moving the world cup from summer to winter or even out of Qatar
itself was a better idea. This could also be considered a “Spin” as
one outcome looks better than the other.
