Iran Nuclear Talks Major Powers
1. Title: Iran and Major Powers
Iran’s nuclear program is a hot debate in international politics since the last one decade.
International powers like America and European Union along with regional powers like
Israel, Saudi Arabia and UAE are trying to convince Iran to shut down its nuclear
program. While there is a contentious debate taking place internationally regarding the
concern issue of nuclear talks with Iran, in the sense that Russia and China are also taking
fanatical interest while becoming a party with the US in Iranian nuclear talks?
The issue of Iran’s nuclearization is very important to analyze with future prospects
because it has created some sort of panic situation and policies are focused on Iran. It is
essential to discuss the future outcomes so that this latent conflict may not be manifested
in future.
The historical data shows that Iran’s nuclear program was started in 1950s. It is now an
open secret that Iranian nuclear journey commenced within one decade in post second
world war scenario. United States of America cooperated with Iran for its nuclear energy
particularly before Iranian revolution 1979. Iran was facing a lot of economic hurdles
during this period and wanted assistance for substitutions of its problems that’s why
United States came forward to fill this gap.
Islamic revolution of 1979 in Iran toppled Shah’s regime and a new chapter of Iranian
politics was opened. Iranian nuclear program remained stand still after revolution but it
was started again in 1985. Iraq-Iran war was the main factor which led Iran to rethink for
further development of Iran’s nuclear capability because of energy problems and because
of some other factors like use of chemical gases by Iraq in Iraq-Iran war. Now Iran
deprived of US cooperation and even Europeans also refused to cooperate with Iran
because of American pressure. Iran moved to other subsequent sources therefore, four
other nations became forward to help Iran and it developed relations with them which
include Russia, Pakistan, China and North Korea. Iran signed agreement with China in
1984 for cooperation in nuclear field. Iran also moved to Pakistan and consequently Iran
and Pakistan signed agreement in 1986. Argentina also put forward its hand for
cooperation and it resulted agreement in 1985. South Africa, Pakistan and Argentina
began to cooperate with Iran for uranium enrichment at the end of 1980s and a new very
important player entered in this competition and that was Russia which agreed to
cooperate with Iran for its nuclear program in 1990.
Iran-Russian relations, Iran-Pakistan cooperation and North Korean cooperation with Iran
not only helped Iran but also increased skepticism about Iranian nuclear program and its
ambitions in late 1990 and early 2000. International community is much concerned about
Iran’s relations with these nations particularly United States of America. Iran has been
pursuing its nuclear program in spite of criticism especially after 2003. It is still
continued despite facing sanctions and international pressure. International community
put pressure and consequently Iran also had to sign additional protocol in September
2003. Iranian nuclear program became a hot issue in 2005 because of recommencement
of uranium enrichment. As a result of Iran’s efforts of uranium enrichment inspite of in
international skepticism the problem grew rapidly because of doubts on Iranian nuclear
2. ambitions and it has been and it is still under criticism because of notion of clandestine
nuclear program of Iran with regard its military uses.
Future picture of Iranian nuclear status is presented by putting the belief that military
conflict between US and Iran is inevitable. It is said that US and Iranian historical rivalry
is a fact that can lead to hypothesize that Iran’s nuclear capability will obviously move
both of nations to military conflictive arena. Iran’s conventional potential with regard of
Iran’s military doctrine which is orthodox can also escalate the situation. The possibility
of surgical strikes from Israel’s side is another key factor for inflictive nuclear policy. US
national and regional interests in Persian Gulf are also in danger and US administration
perceives that its interests may be jeopardized in case of Iran’s acquisition of nuclear
power. For this purpose, the United States of America taking into confidence its political
and military alliances has started the diplomatic efforts in the form of nuclear
negotiations with Iran several months ago. The current scenario of nuclear negotiations
between Iran and the Big Five plus one(Germany) group, is disturbing and annoying for
many in the American congress and specially and surely for Israel. Iran wants an end to
sanctions that are crippling its economy, while the United States, Britain, France,
Germany, Russia and China want curbs on Tehran's nuclear program to ensure it is not
pursuing atomic weapons. The American congressman Bob Menendez, a democrat,
argued that the congress should rethink and should impose new sanctions on Iran.
President Obama reiterated his call on Congress to please not go out of its way to
sabotage the administration’s negotiations with Iran.
Some analysts argued that a bipartisan, international group of hawks just have a desire to
sabotage the Iranian nuclear talks. If this scenario is emerging from the back scene of the
nuclear talks, then the future of Middle East is not unpredictable. The major powers
should concern ‘peace’ as the most required ‘ingredient’ in the nuclear world of twenty
first century.
