This document presents information about torpedoes, including their history, types, and modern developments. It discusses how Robert Fulton originally conceived of the torpedo in 1813 and how Whitehead developed the first self-propelled torpedo in 1866. It describes the two main types of torpedoes - lightweight torpedoes used by surface ships, airplanes, and helicopters, and heavyweight torpedoes used by submarines. The document also provides details on how torpedoes work and are propelled, and highlights some modern smart torpedoes like the Black Shark, Spearfish, SeaHake Mod4, and MU 90/Impact.
3. INTRODUCTION
It is a self propelled weapon with an explosive
warhead.
It can be launched above and below the water
surface.
Designed to detonate either on contact with
its target or in proximity to it.
4. HISTORY
Original torpedo idea was given by – Robert
Fulton, 1813:
Whitehead’s first “Fish” torpedo - October 1866
• – Length: 11 feet 7 inches
• – Diameter: 14 inches
• – Range: 200 yards
• – Speed: 6.5 knots
6. LIGHT WEIGHT TORPEDO
Used by surface ship, airplane and helicoptor
to destroy /track enemy.
It is used to destroy small target.
Has less range compare to HWT.
Example:SHYENA
7. HEAVY WEIGHT TORPEDO
Used in submarine and anti surface rolls.
Used to destroy larger targets.
Example; VARUNASTRA.
8. WORKING OF TORPEDO
It has propulsion system, a guidance system,
and some sort of explosive device.
Torpedo neither works by the use of rocket
engines nor jet engines.
9. TORPEDO USES ONE OF TWO
TECHNIQUES FOR PROPULSION:
BATTERIES AND ELECTRIC MOTOR
ENGINE USES SPECIAL FUEL
10. BATTERIES AND ELECTRIC MOTOR
Same technique that any non-nuclear
submarine are using in running under water.
Carries oxidiser with it which increase the
weight and hassle it.
11. ENGINE USES SPECIAL FUEL
It uses fuel that either does not need as an
oxidizer or it carries oxidizer inside the
torpedo.
Fuel used is a Gasoline-type,a
monopropellant.
ex. Hydrogen peroxide doesn’t need an oxidiser.
13. TORPEDO REVOLUTION
• Revolution of Torpedo encouraged with the
failure of sea mines.
• Robert Fulton invented word torpedo in 1805
for underwater explosive device.
• Samuel colt began experementing with
underwater mines fired by electric current
in1840.
• In 1885 Fortification board design new coast
defence system after American civil war.
16. CONCLUSION
• “THE LIBERTY OF THE SEAS WOULD BECAME A GUARANTEE
OF THE PERPETUAL PEACE TO ALL MARTINE NATION”Phrase
GIVEN by ROBERT FULTON.
• NAVEL POWER IS REAL POWER IN TODAYS WORLD.
• EQUIPED WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY ENABLES ANY
COUNTRY TO RESIST ANY DIFFICULT SITUATION ESPECIALLY IN
UNDERWATER.
