2. LIPOPROTEINS
• Lipoproteins are molecular complexes of proteins with lipids.
• It includes:-
1. Very low density lipoproteins
2. Low density lipoproteins
3. High density lipoproteins
4. Chylomicrons
5. Free fattyacid albumin complexes
3. COMPONENTS INCLUDED IN LIPID PROFILE
AND THEIR REFERENCE VALUES
LIPID FRACTION REFERENCE VALUES (mg/dl)
Total lipid 400-600
Total Cholesterol 150-200
LDL cholesterol 80-150
HDL cholesterol 30-60
VLDL cholesterol 20-40
Triglycerides 75-150
Phospholipids 150-200
Free fatty acids 5-15
4. LIPID PROFILE AND TYPE 2 DIABETES
MELLITUS
According to a research conducted in United States by Daniel Nii
Aryee Tagoe et al(2013).,
• Among 193 subjects, a greater percentage about 35.7% of
diabetics were found in the age group between 50-59 years.
• Out of which, 52.7% of diabetics have low amounts of HDL and
21.34% followed by other lipid parameters.
• In this study, it was concluded that Abnormal LDL levels correlated
both positively and highly significant in diabetic patients.
5. LIPID PROFILE AND HYPERTENSION
According to a study conducted by Baghdad et al.,
• The mean value of Serum cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL were
significantly higher in the HTN patients while
• The mean value of Serum levels of HDL were significantly lower.
• It was also found that there was an increase in cholesterol level
with an increase in age.
• It was finally concluded that the cholesterol levels and HTN
synergistically increase the risk of Coronary vascular disease.
6. PREVENTIVE MEASURES TO CONTROL
CHOLESTEROL
• Make healthy eating choices like limiting food are high in
saturated fat and eating foods naturally high in dietary fiber.
• Regular monitoring of body weight and maintaining a healthy
weight.
• Regular physical activity like doing a brisk walk for 30 minutes a
day.
• Quit smoking.
• Limit alcohol consumption.
