Since 1988, MARTI has convened professional
training conferences on such topics as women
and addiction, anti-social personality and
treatment, adult children of alcoholics, and
self-defeating behaviors. It convenes an
annual five-day summer school at IUP
featuring nationally recognized lecturers in
the alcohol treatment, high-risk children, and
domestic violence fields.
4. The Mid-Atlantic Addiction Research and Training Institute
Among the first institutes in the country to utilize the expertise of
treatment programs and a university to provide high-quality
training in the fields of chemical dependency and associated
problems, as well as to develop and coordinate intramural and
extramural research projects while providing research and
training experience for practicing professionals and graduate
students entering the field.
The Appalachian Tri-State (ATS) Node of the National Institute on Drug
Abuse Clinical Trials Network (CTN), housed in Addiction Medicine
Services in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of
Pittsburgh School of Medicine, collaborated with MARTI to plan this
conference. Faculty and staff from the ATS will provide clinical
workshops on evidenced-based treatments for addiction.
6. Comments From Past Participants
“As was the case last year, I loved it! I have never been to a conference
where I was so attentive, interested, and able to experience learning.”
—George, Clinical Social Worker
“This was an incredible conference. I will definitely be back. Wonderful!”
—Sue, Junior High School Teacher
“Excellent personal and professional experience. Very empowering.”
—Mike, Dual Diagnosis Counselor
“It is head and shoulders above many of the conferences I have attended.”
—Kimberly, Psychiatric Nurse
“Attending this conference for a second time, I didn’t feel it was possible
to have a week-long program on the same level of excellence as I
experienced the first. Happily, this year’s conference proved me very
wrong.”
—Sheila, High School Teacher
