2. Unit of Study: DOLPHINS AND THEIR HABITATS
Grade/Level: 3RD
Duration: 4 days
Main Objective: SWBAT use a computer to assist them in the research of dolphins and
their locations.
Summary: This lesson will incorporate social studies, science, language arts, and
reading. Each day the students will learn new facts about the dolphin species they are
given and use these facts for that day’s activity.

Dolphin species List, computers, Microsoft word

RF.3.4 – SWBAT read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
W.3.1 - SWBAT write opinion pieces on topics, supporting a point of view with
reasons.
W.3.2 – SWBAT write informative texts to examine a topic and convey ideas
and information clearly.
W.3.7 - SWBAT conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a
topic.
8.1.4A – SWBAT use basic technology, use the basic features of an operating
system.
8.1.4B – SWBAT identify and use basic web browsers, search engines and
directories to obtain information; locate specific information by searching
databases.
6. Procedure/Sequence of Activities:
Day 1 –SWBAT explore the species of dolphin they are given on websites (websites to
be given by teacher), as well as, do research in the library.
At the end of the day the students will make a concept map using the information
they collected using Inspiration software.
Day 2 – SWBAT locate the species on a world map using google maps.
Day3 – SWBAT read a story handed out by the teacher and clearly understand it. The
students will be given a short quiz to assess what they have learned from the story.
Day4 –Final Assessment - SWBAT write about the dolphin species they were given
and the facts they learned, as well as, draw a picture – they may pick to write a short
story or an acrostic poem; The students will use Microsoft word programs and hyper
studio.
