An Overview
 Introduction to Measurement
 Anthropometric Measurement
 Physiological Measurement
 Biomechanical Measurement
 Kinesiological Measurement
WHAT IS MEASUREMENT?
• Measurement is a specific score given by an expert every time
a test is applied.
• Each recording of measurement needs two things:
A number indicating the magnitude (Quantity) in amount or
duration
A unit or standard assigned by experts.
• For example, measurement of weight may be recorded as 50 kg
(i) = 50 (ii) = kilogram
Anthropometric Measurement
Stature or Standing Height: It is the maximum height of the
individual when standing erect on a horizontal surface with his head
and face in F.H. plane or it is the straight height of the subject (bare-
footed) up to the point vertex.
Landmarks : Vertex and Frankfurt horizontal plane.
Equipment: Anthropometer rod or stadiometer.
Method: The subject is asked to stand erect, barefooted on a plane
horizontal surface against a wall, with his/her heels, back of the
shoulders and head touching the wall. Subject should stretch the body
upwards as much as possible without the heels leaving the ground.
Physiological Measurement
Vital capacity: This measurement is obtained using a Spirometer.
Setting the spirometer: Make sure the spirometer is properly assembled,
calibrated. MiniSpir is connected to a PC trough a USB port.
Spirometry Testing : Insert the mouthpiece supplied into the hollow part of the
turbine by at least 0.5 cm.
• Fit the nose clip onto the nose of the subject to ensure that air cannot escape
through the nostrils.
• Hold MiniSpir in one hand as you would a cell phone.
• Insert the mouthpiece well into the mouth beyond the teeth, being carefully to
ensure that air cannot escape from the sides of the mouth.
• Take testing in a standing position.
• The Windows “winspiroPro” software allows to view the spirometric test
results (flow/volume curves, spirometry parameters).
Biomechanical Measurement
Counter movement jump: To measure the specific jumping ability
performance, jump test protocol is used using BTS G - SENSOR
device
Sensor Positioning: For the jump protocol, the sensor must be
positioned below the line that connects the two dimples of Venus-
lumbosacral passage, which corresponds to S1-S2 vertebrae
Countermovement jump: The subject begins the test in an upright
position with the feet shoulder-width apart and hands on the hips.
• On the command to start, the subject jumps by doing a counter-
movement jump - bending the knees by 90° and the trunk remain
upright with hands on the hips.
• BTS G-SENSOR allows the acquisition and transmission of data to
the PC through a Bluetooth connection.
Kinesiological Measurement
Range of movements of joints : This measurement is obtained
using a Goniometer
Procedure: To measure the range of motion at a joint:
• Position the center of the goniometer at the axis of rotation of a
joint.
• Align the arms of the goniometer with the long axis of the bones
of the adjacent segments or to an external reference.
• Move the body part through its appropriate range of motion
(ROM).
• Determine the joint's end of the range of motion and end-feel.
Scoring: The measurement is the angle in degrees as read off the
goniometer
