OESOPHAGEAL STRICTURE
 A benign oesophageal stricture,
or peptic stricture is a narrowing or
tightening of the oesophagus that causes
swallowing difficulties.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of oesophageal strictures
include heartburn, bitter or acid taste in the
mouth, choking, coughing, shortness of breath,
frequent burping or hiccups, pain or trouble
swallowing, throwing up blood, or weight loss.

CAUSES
It can be caused by or associated with gastroesophageal
reflux disease oesophagitis, a dysfunctional lower
oesophageal sphincter, disordered
motility, lye ingestion, or a hiatal hernia.
 Strictures can form after oesophageal surgery and
other treatments such as laser therapy or photodynamic
therapy.
While the area heals, a scar forms, causing the tissue to
pull and tighten, leading to difficulty in swallowing.

DIAGNOSIS
It can be diagnosed with an X-ray while the
patient swallows barium (called a barium
study of the esophagus), by a computerized
tomography scan, a biopsy, or by
an endoscopy.

Treatment
If it is caused by esophagitis, in turn caused by an
underlying infection, it is commonly treated by
treating the infection (typically with antibiotics).
 In order to open the stricture, a surgeon can insert
a bougie – a weighted tube used to dilate the
constricted areas in the esophagus.It can
sometimes be treated with other medications.
For example, an H2 antagonist (e.g. ranitidine) or
a proton-pump inhibitor (e.g. omeprazole) can
treat underlying acid reflux disease.

Epidemiology
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
affects approximately 40% of adults. Strictures
occur in 7 to 23% of patients with GERD who
are untreated.

The oesophagus is the tube that brings food and
liquids from your mouth to your stomach.
 Benign oesophageal stricture typically occurs
when stomach acid and other irritants damage the
lining of the esophagus over time.
This leads to inflammation (oesophagitis) and scar
tissue, which causes the esophagus to narrow.

Esophageal Strictures & Turmeric
An esophageal stricture is a gradual narrowing of
the esophagus due to the build-up of scar tissue.
 There are many causes of esophageal
inflammation and scarring, which can lead to
serious swallowing difficulties.
Turmeric is a common Indian and Asian spice
that displays some medicinal properties, such as
the ability to reduce inflammation and combat
antioxidants.

 Turmeric is not considered a treatment or cure
for esophageal strictures, although it may help
prevent them in some capacity.
 However, more research is needed before any
recommendations can be made.

Esophageal Strictures
The esophagus is the tube that runs from your
throat to your stomach, delivering food and
liquid into your gastrointestinal system for
digestion and absorption.
The lining of the esophagus can become
damaged from a variety of conditions such as
acid reflux disease, chronic vomiting,
alcoholism, infections, medical procedures or
cancerous processes.

Esophageal Strictures-1
Esophageal damage leads to inflammation,
which eventually causes scar tissue build-up.
Consequently, the lumen of the esophagus
becomes narrow and stiff.
The repeated inflammation and scarring will
eventually produce damaged tissue in the form
of a ring that severely narrows the opening of
the esophagus, which is called an esophageal
stricture.

Symptoms and Treatment
The primary symptom of an esophageal stricture is
difficulty and discomfort with swallowing food and
even liquids due to the inflammation and narrowing
of the esophageal lumen,
 according to the “Textbook of Functional Medicine.”
Other common symptoms include the sensation of
having food trapped in the esophagus, regurgitation
of food, weight loss and malnourishment.
Diagnosis of an esophageal stricture is done by either
a barium swallow and X-ray or an endoscopy exam

Symptoms and Treatment
Standard medical treatment usually involves
drugs called proton pump inhibitors, as well as
anti-inflammatories and vasodilators.
Surgical treatment is considered in extreme
cases.
There are no herbal remedies specifically
recommended for esophageal strictures,
although turmeric’s various properties may be
useful.

Turmeric
Turmeric root has been used for centuries in India as a
dye, spice and herbal remedy. The root is dried and
ground into a yellow-orange powder and is a common
ingredient in curry and other Asian dishes.
The main medicinal compound in turmeric is curcumin,
which is a powerful antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-
