2. Research Proposal
Hypothesis:
Pickup lines can be categorized into 3 types – direct, innocuous and flippant type. The direct type
of pickup lines is most effective towards female in face-to-face contexts.
Research Method:
Quantitative. The effectiveness of a pickup line is shown through the mean receptivity of pickup
lines among the male and female participants. The receptivity will be determined when
participants are willingly providing their mobile phone number to the researcher.
Procedure and structure:
3 pickup lines will be categorized into the three types: direct, innocuous and flippant. 10
participants will be
Direct (Straightforward approach): “Nice to meet you, I’m _______ and you’re beautiful”
“May I have your number?”
Innocuous (Innocent approach): “Hi how are you, my name is ______” “Do you want to
have lunch with me now?”
Flippant (Cute and creative approach): “Do you have a plaster? “ “Because I think I hurt
my knees falling for you.”
The pickup lines will be presented to both male and female participants and researcher
will try to obtain the participant’s mobile phone number to present the effectiveness of
each type of pickup lines.
The participants are allowed to decline the researcher’s approach and/or reject request of
the researcher (mobile phone number).
The venue for the experiment will be at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus and Syopz
Mall’s area.
3.
The targeted participants will be the people that are more approachable – alone or less
friends surrounding. Unapproachable targets will be couples, lecturers, working adults,
infants, children, parents or people within a crowd of friends.
A recorder will be on the researchers body (hidden) and then a camera person will be on
set as well (hidden).
The researchers (male and female) will be constant to avoid any unnecessary mistakes.
For example, Mr. A is more attractive than Mr. B pickup lines from Mr. A will be more
effective than Mr. B.
After achieving the objective, researcher will provide a consent letter to participant to
avoid any further misunderstanding for proof of experiment.
If participant is offended, researcher will direct participant to advisor.
Permission of videography will be sought out. Participant may or may not want his/her
presence in the video as well as their private information.
Then, each type of pickup line is analyzed to obtain a conclusion.
Video will be edited and presented. Only clips WITH permission from participant will be
included into the video.
Email of the team of researchers will be inside the consent letter just in case participants
are curious of the outcomes for the experiment.
Ethic consideration:
The participants will be of a voluntary party. They are allowed to refuse any request or
ignore the questions from the researcher. Withdrawing upon approach is possible also.
Participants will be briefed on the experiment and apologized (if offended) after
experiment is over. Consent letter will also be provided if needed.
If offended, researchers will direct the participant to advisor, Ms Chia Yee Peng for
proof of existing experiment for the module
Confidentiality (name, mobile phone number, face, voice of the participants’ facial
expression will be protected (if wanted) and the private information of the participants
will not be published.
4.
Researcher and participant will be of close proximity but only in speaking distance. Not
whisper distance.
Researchers are to act professionally. No fooling around with the participant, using clips
of participants without permission, no revealing private information of participants to the
public, and no physical contact towards the participants.
When the desired amount of results is collected, researchers are to evaluate the outcomes
with caution and accurately report the outcomes.
