Emergency medicine senior project
Over the past few years I have been woken up numerous times by my dad’s pager going
off and him having to leave to fight a fire or save someone from a car wreck.I remember one
time a few years ago listening to a call on the police scanner where a motorcycle hit a logging
truck. I thought it was incredibly exciting that someone’s life was on the line and people like my
dad were responsible for it.Growing up my dad always wanted to be a fire fighter. He began
volunteering at station five in Macedonia around the time I began thinking about what I wanted
to be when I grew up so consequently I’ve been largely influenced to get a job in that field.I was
very attracted to the idea of only having to work one in three days and having the satisfaction of
knowing I have helped someone with their problem.
So I decided that for my senior project I would learn what it means to be a fire fighter
and then make a short documentary about it.Many patients of the fire department end up going to
a level one trauma center so I wrote my research paper about the lack of level one trauma centers
in Georgia. About eighty percent of the calls that a fire department gets are medical in nature and
a level one trauma center is capable of treating all trauma related injuries.I chose to write about
this after I heard that about Atlanta medical becoming the second level one trauma center in the
Atlanta area, Grady memorial being the first. This becomes an issue when patients need to be
transferred farther distances. Now I’m going to tell you about the process I followed in creating
my product.
2. My facilitators name was Kenny Scott he is a full time fire fighter working with the city
of Atlanta and volunteers at station five in Macedonia.I wanted a facilitator that was easy to
reach and lived close by and that would be easy to see on a weekly basis. And also one that is
knowledgeable.I found my facilitator through my dad as Mr. Scott does the training for circle
five where he volunteers.Mr. Scott began volunteering at circle five in September 2008 he
graduated fire fighter 1 in February 2010 he has fire fighter 1,2 and an EMT I certification. Now
I am going to tell you the steps in the process of making my senior project.
The first thing I had to do was to meet with Mr. Scott and ask him if he wanted to be my
Facilitator. Once he agreed we had to decide when we were going to meet, and we decided that I
would attend a two hour training every Thursday night that he did not have to work. Then we
decided that I would get my CPR certification I attended a five hour course taught by David
Kleiman and got my CPR certification. After that was finished and I felt I had significant
knowledge of the emergency medical field I wrote up a set of interview questions and
interviewed the people I had met during the course of my projectand finally I composed those
interviews into a video during my lunch. Now I’m going to tell you the obstacles I encountered
during the project.
One problem I encountered was scheduling a time to have the CPR class as Mr. Kleiman
also had to schedule It around another students similar project and she kept backing out.Another
issue I had was remembering to take pictures and get product work logs signed as I was usually
busy with the training and tended to forget.I also didn’t realize that I was only able to show a two
minute movie while I planned to make one much longer so at the last minute I had to make a
shorter movie that still shows all the knowledge I had accumulated.
3. Of all the projects I have done over my life this has been the most difficult.
I have learned numerous things about myself that I could have only been taught by the
senior project. This project has taught me how to deal with my poor work habits and I’ve learned
not only how to complete work on time but that it’s better to finish early. Being naturally shy
around people I have learned how to communicate with adults in a sophisticated manor and to be
social with people outside of my age bracket. I have also learned that I do not want to pursue a
career in the medical field as I do not enjoy close physical contact with other people nor do I
enjoy the amount of physical stamina that is required.
Instead,I plan on staying at home and attending Gainsville college until I earn my
associates degree in psychology then transfer to a large university to obtain my bachelors and
graduates degree.
