South African Keynotes
The latest interpretation & analysis of the changing South African
political, economic and social environment.
1. Uncharted Waters: The new politics of
South Africa in 2015 & beyond: South
Africa’s flagship political analysis.

South African politics is changing. The future of the broader ANC
Alliance and COSATU now hangs in the balance as trade union
rivalries, policy disagreements and personality clashes begin to
fashion an entirely new political climate in the country.
The advent of the EFF has also disrupted the somewhat
predictable pattern of parliamentary procedures and is causing
substantial tension within the ruling party. Add to this a stronger
Democratic Alliance and a weakened ANC – particularly in
Gauteng – and you have a recipe for a much more competitive and
contested political arena in the run-up to the 2016 local
government elections and beyond.
South Africa may also get a brand new political grouping on the
Left of the political spectrum if NUMSA’s suspension from
COSATU is made permanent. This too can weaken the ANC, take
away some electoral support and destabilize the ruling party’s
power base.
The weakened Presidency under Jacob Zuma - still battling issues
surrounding Nkandla - and a domestic economy that has
deteriorated to lower levels of growth is likely to result in an
unpredictable yet potentially exciting environment in which both
political and economic change can occur. An increasingly important
role for Cyril Ramaphosa is likely to emerge as contenders for
power begin to position themselves.

Uncharted Waters: The New Politics of South Africa in
2015 & Beyond is an essential guide to where the country is
going in the near future With his usual balanced insight, flair and
understated humour, Daniel Silke will address questions around
the future of the ANC and its leadership; the role of unions in the
business environment; the domestic South African economy as well
as political competition into the future.

Combining political, economic & social trends, this is
ideal for conventions, conferences or smaller briefings
and is sure to be one of the most important keynotes you
will want to hear in 2015. Book now!
2. The State of the Nation: Critical
economic and political issues facing
South Africa in the future. An essential
political-economy briefing for all
audiences.

South Africa finds herself at a political and economic crossroads.
As the country moves beyond its second decade of democracy,
alternative visions for its economic future are beginning to emerge.
How successful has South Africa’s economy been since 1994 and
what type of economic model is likely in the future? Political
Analyst & Director of the Political Futures Consultancy Daniel
Silke will challenge your conference with a future-oriented and
broad-ranging presentation offering the latest analysis of major
economic, political and social trends facing the country.
This may include (inter-alia) the state of the economy in both the
domestic and global context; social challenges; labour-relations
issues; current trade-union tensions including prospects for rival
unions and new political factions; the state of South Africa’s
competitiveness; the role of infrastructure development and the
state-owned-enterprise sector; the BRICS partnerships as well as
broader emerging market and African issues.

Silke will also focus on the role and efficiency of the State and
the debate for and against the National Development Plan (NDP).
In particular, this keynote will address the question of how
economic policy debates around competing visions for economic
growth are likely to define and potentially divide the broader ANC
Alliance in the years to come. This is especially relevant given the
recent rating-agency downgrades for the country and disappointing
growth rates.
Marrying the key economic debates of the modern South African
era with Silke’s canny insights into the rough and tumble of the
domestic political process makes this one topical presentation you
will not want to miss!
This is one of the few South African keynotes to offer
both an economic & political overview of the current and
future prospects for the country and represents excellent
value for any conference.
Although not someone to gloss over the real challenges
facing the country, Silke’s analysis is both fair and
balanced and provides an essential underpinning for
business in the country going forward. Not to be missed!
3. South Africa in the World: The Global,
African & South African political economy

5. The State of the World: Living &
succeeding in an era of Volatility. One
of the world’s premier global overviews.
A comprehensive analysis of current
political, economic and social issues and
their impact on the business
environment now and into the future.
You probably will never see ‘normal’ business conditions ever
again. And, you better get used to it! Your business survival now
depends on understanding global change and applying both
corrective as well as innovative measures to grow your bottom line.
The world now faces a number of key ‘disruptors’. These might
sound daunting, but only by identifying and understanding them
can business exploit the change and create opportunities for the
future.
Global events have an impact everywhere. Russia’s economic
problems are being felt in emerging market currency markets
everywhere. Tensions caused by the rise of ISIS in Syria and Iraq
has unnerved much of the world. Lower growth rates in China can
affect global trade that has increasingly relied on Beijing in recent
times.

Europe’s economy is faring poorly thus hampering consumer
demand while in the US, good GDP figures are aiding a recovery as
the economy begins to transform. Both regions suffer from
stagnant wage increases thereby affecting demand.
Technological upheavals continue apace. Rapid innovation and
shifts in lifestyle and work conditions are creating a changing
environment for humanity. We are currently embedded in a life-
long era of technological-driven transition in every aspect of
human endeavour. The advent of connectivity, the Internet and
smartphones are changing the structures of service providers in
every sector. Shale gas is destabilising the traditional oil market
and has led to unprecedented drops in petroleum prices globally
with substantial consequences likely.
Chasing global returns is the new game in town: The unique effects
of a low interest rate environment in the West has focused
business interest on hitherto uncharted markets across the globe.
From Wal-Mart’s entry into South Africa to Burger King’s
expansion into India, companies are seeking a higher return on
investment as home markets stagnate. Understanding global
markets and adapting business to Emerging and new Frontier
jurisdictions may well be a central – yet essential - challenge to
growth in the near future.
Led by China, the West is no longer the centre of business. The
household names of the past may well be just that. Alibaba is now
taking on Amazon. Watch out for China’s Xiaomi in the cell phone
market or Huawei in ICT. Indian companies like Tata now produce
the venerable once-British-cachet brands of Jaguar and Land
Rover motor vehicles. South African mobile phone companies
operate across the African continent. The world’s brands are no
longer Western and increasing competition will continue to
exacerbate market volatility as new entrants usurp existing
markets.
The planet is changing: A heady combination of growing
populations and middle-classes in emerging economies, income
inequalities and multi-tier societies, rapid urbanisation at a pace
hitherto unknown to mankind, alarming climate change and the

migration of millions of people all creates challenges and
opportunities.
Only by grasping the dynamic macro environment can you begin to
plan ahead. And that’s where Political Analyst & Futurist Daniel
Silke’s new keynote really counts. Can you apply these trends to
your future strategy for success? This keynote will help you do just
that!
Following on the runaway success of Daniel Silke’s flagship
keynote Tracking the Future (and his new book of the same title)
this new presentation is characteristically informative,
entertaining and motivational. It is a wake-up call for business to
grasp the global changes before them and will leave an audience
prepared to tackle new directions or initiatives.
This keynote is applicable for a wide range of conferences. It may
also be customized for selected industries in the public sector,
retail, financial services, agricultural and resources sectors. It can
also include a segment on South Africa’s political/economic future
or it can be entirely global in scope.

7. The 10 Most Important Trends in the
World Right Now. Fast-paced & highly
topical for 2015

It may be a cliché that the world of business is changing more
rapidly than ever. But, do you know the scope of this change? Are
your employees, delegates and management team informed about
the enormity of global change that is currently underway?
In his latest, fast-paced, invigorating and customisable new
conference keynote, Political Analyst, Author & Global Futurist
Daniel Silke will present 10 key political, economic, social &
technological trends in 45 minutes that are currently shaking and
shifting the world.
Fully illustrated and referenced, Silke will travel around the world
explaining how population trends are already impacting future
decision-making. He will look at the latest insights into consumer
behaviour; how technology is shifting our habits and how the rise
of new super-powers will alter the global economic landscape.

Silke will also address political, educational and generational
changes that are altering the way we think and operate. Above all
else, this is an immensely entertaining keynote that raises 10 core
issues for any business in any industry. How you react to Silke’s 10
challenges will determine whether you sink or swim into the
future. This might just be the most important 45 minutes you and
your delegates will spend!
This keynote is also customisable to specific industries
and can be researched and presented accordingly. By the
nature of its title, it is highly topical and requires
constant updates.
Note: This Keynote differs from ‘Tracking the Future’ in
that is more about the ‘now’ than the ‘future’. It is also
of shorter duration for time-sensitive events.
8. The Consumer of the Future: How
political, economic, social & technological
trends influence & drive the discerning
consumer.
The world is changing rapidly and the consumer of the future is
upon us. In this important and timely presentation, Political
Analyst & Futurist Daniel Silke identifies a series of key social,
political, economic and technological trends and shows how these
will affect every aspect of the customer experience in the years to
come.
The presentation will look at how consumers are changing their
consumption patterns after and are becoming much more
discerning in their demands and choices. Increasing competition
from new entrants in the consumer space call for a renewed focus
on customer-centric initiatives.
In addition, the effect of a growing developing world; the rise of
China, India & Africa; new powerful middle-classes in Frontier and
Emerging markets; demographic changes; technological
innovation; multichannel marketing; big data; mobile banking and

payments; the internet of things and protecting the planet now all
play a vital part in analysing the psyche and behaviour of
consumers.
Consumers are shifting their thinking and actions and bricks and
mortar stores will have to do the same. The changing face of the
shopping mall as a central trading platform will also be analysed
as online threatens traditional behaviour.
This unique presentation is ideal for any conference dealing with
sales and future change. It aims to make participants aware of the
global trends that will change the way they interact with their
clients or customers. And, it will prepare them for some of the
biggest trend drivers in the decade to come.
Take politics, economics, social change & technology, mix
them together with consumer insights and this is one
presentation not to be missed!
9. Emerging Worlds: The BRICS &
Beyond: The influence & impact of
Brazil, Russia, India, China, South
Africa & the rise of the rest. Brand new
insights & analysis!
This may well be the Emerging Markets Century – and the
countries to watch are the BRICS nations: Brazil, Russia, India,
China and South Africa. Or are they?
Political Analyst & Futurist Daniel Silke identifies these five
emerging super-powers that are set to dominate global affairs for
the rest of our lifetimes. Their growing economies, population,
skills and political clout make them all highly influential in almost
every aspect of life.
And yet, they all have very different social and political dynamics
and are all fraught with internal debates about economic policy
into the future. Clearly, how these countries interact with each

  13
other and the broader world will change the future of finance,
business & politics for us all.
There is also life beyond BRICS. With faltering growth rates,
investors are constantly looking elsewhere in the developing and
frontier market environment. But, markets like Turkey, India and
Indonesia have suffered currency and confidence dips in recent
months making them (and others) more fragile. Silke will analyse
and assess these and other contradictions.
Africa holds out much promise as it becomes a growing region and
stakes its claim to recognition & investment. Can it lay claim to be
a future economic powerhouse?
Delving into the fortunes of emerging markets, Political Analyst
and Futurist Daniel Silke identifies the key political, economic and
demographic drivers affecting their future. And, he also identifies
Africa and a number of other regional powers and country-
groupings as important additions to this debate.
Can the BRICS (and the rest) really provide a political alternative
and new power-base globally? Will these nations work together or
will they drift apart? Will the BRICS support a move away from
the US Dollar as a store of global value?
Can the BRICS change and challenge the dynamics of
international organizations like the United Nations, International
Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization? And, are there
other countries and regional groupings that might conflict or
compete with the BRICS? These questions and more will be
answered in this important new address.
An essential introduction to these issues in an accessible
& entertaining format.

10. Arise Africa: The Compelling Case
for Investing in Africa. Constantly
updated & always essential!
In May 2000, the Economist Magazine referred to Africa as ‘The
Hopeless Continent”. A decade later, the same magazine extolled
the virtues of Africa in another cover story – this time more
positively entitled ‘Africa Rising’.
Over the last decade much of Africa has been changing – for the
better. Its economic growth has out-grown East Asia – including
Japan. Seven out of the top ten growth economies worldwide over
the next five years will be African.
By 2015, well over 300m Africans will populate a new middle class
with, for the first time, a discretionary income. More democracy,
better governance, greater regional and global integration make it
a continent on the move.
Urbanization and the rise of African cities will be critical in
providing economic and employment opportunities to the millions
who will desert the rural areas in the hope for a better life. And, as
Africa’s population increases, so its connectivity through at least
600m cellphone subscribers offers new opportunities in
communications, health, innovation and global linkages.
Silke also places Africa within the global context as China and
other developing and developed economic powers seek both
investment opportunities and future commodity security. And,
with Africa set to experience an oil and gas boom, new issues and
opportunities arise.
This dynamic presentation is filled with the latest and most
authoritative statistical and analytical evidence to show the
emergence of the continent as a force in world business, trade and
labour.
This keynote does not shy away from the tough realities that often
hold back investors’ enthusiasm - such as weak governance, graft
(corruption), logistical and related infrastructure bottlenecks.

  15
However, Silke offers a compelling, entertaining and above all
highly positive account of why the time for Africa is now and why
Africa will be critical to global growth in the future.
This keynote is essential for anyone thinking about
investing on the continent or any business keen to learn
about the growth potential that Africa affords the world.

11. Africa Reality: The State of the
Continent in 2015. New for 2015!

Make no mistake, Africa is on the rise. Impressive growth rates
over the last decade have contributed to tangible improvements in
the living conditions and commercial fortunes of millions.
Investment Dollars have flowed into the continent and China has
been on the march to secure much-needed commodities.
However, in 2015, Africa faces some real challenges. Low levels of
manufacturing still hamper proper job creation. Over-reliance on
metals and minerals make economies vulnerable. Rising debt
levels add a sense of volatility to financial and fiscal planning.
Slower Chinese growth can affect Beijing’s role in investing on the
continent. And, infrastructure bottlenecks and corruption continue
to cause concern. In addition, security concerns from Nigeria to
Kenya and beyond are making investors jittery.
Africa in 2015 is certainly alive with possibilities like never before.
But, it also faces headwinds that can slow growth into the future.
In this important new keynote, Daniel Silke analyses both the good
and the bad in Africa offering a sweeping and entertaining analysis
of the current and future fortunes of the continent.
A balanced ‘real’ view on Africa, offering both positives
and challenges that are essential to business into the
future.

Daniel Silke Keynote Menu 2015

  • 1. Daniel Silke Keynote Menu 2015 C o m p e l l i n g , C o n t e n t- D r i v e n K e y n o t e s Outstanding South African, African & Globally-themed political economy presentations for conferences, corporate events & seminars worldwide.
  • 2. Daniel Silke Keynote Menu 2015 www.danielsilke.com Keynotes with Content          2 South African Keynotes The latest interpretation & analysis of the changing South African political, economic and social environment. 1. Uncharted Waters: The new politics of South Africa in 2015 & beyond: South Africa’s flagship political analysis.   South African politics is changing. The future of the broader ANC Alliance and COSATU now hangs in the balance as trade union rivalries, policy disagreements and personality clashes begin to fashion an entirely new political climate in the country. The advent of the EFF has also disrupted the somewhat predictable pattern of parliamentary procedures and is causing substantial tension within the ruling party. Add to this a stronger Democratic Alliance and a weakened ANC – particularly in Gauteng – and you have a recipe for a much more competitive and contested political arena in the run-up to the 2016 local government elections and beyond. South Africa may also get a brand new political grouping on the Left of the political spectrum if NUMSA’s suspension from COSATU is made permanent. This too can weaken the ANC, take away some electoral support and destabilize the ruling party’s power base. The weakened Presidency under Jacob Zuma - still battling issues surrounding Nkandla - and a domestic economy that has deteriorated to lower levels of growth is likely to result in an unpredictable yet potentially exciting environment in which both political and economic change can occur. An increasingly important role for Cyril Ramaphosa is likely to emerge as contenders for power begin to position themselves.
  • 3. Daniel Silke Keynote Menu 2015 www.danielsilke.com Keynotes with Content          3 Uncharted Waters: The New Politics of South Africa in 2015 & Beyond is an essential guide to where the country is going in the near future With his usual balanced insight, flair and understated humour, Daniel Silke will address questions around the future of the ANC and its leadership; the role of unions in the business environment; the domestic South African economy as well as political competition into the future.   Combining political, economic & social trends, this is ideal for conventions, conferences or smaller briefings and is sure to be one of the most important keynotes you will want to hear in 2015. Book now! 2. The State of the Nation: Critical economic and political issues facing South Africa in the future. An essential political-economy briefing for all audiences.   South Africa finds herself at a political and economic crossroads. As the country moves beyond its second decade of democracy, alternative visions for its economic future are beginning to emerge. How successful has South Africa’s economy been since 1994 and what type of economic model is likely in the future? Political Analyst & Director of the Political Futures Consultancy Daniel Silke will challenge your conference with a future-oriented and broad-ranging presentation offering the latest analysis of major economic, political and social trends facing the country. This may include (inter-alia) the state of the economy in both the domestic and global context; social challenges; labour-relations issues; current trade-union tensions including prospects for rival unions and new political factions; the state of South Africa’s competitiveness; the role of infrastructure development and the state-owned-enterprise sector; the BRICS partnerships as well as broader emerging market and African issues.
  • 4. Daniel Silke Keynote Menu 2015 www.danielsilke.com Keynotes with Content          4 Silke will also focus on the role and efficiency of the State and the debate for and against the National Development Plan (NDP). In particular, this keynote will address the question of how economic policy debates around competing visions for economic growth are likely to define and potentially divide the broader ANC Alliance in the years to come. This is especially relevant given the recent rating-agency downgrades for the country and disappointing growth rates. Marrying the key economic debates of the modern South African era with Silke’s canny insights into the rough and tumble of the domestic political process makes this one topical presentation you will not want to miss! This is one of the few South African keynotes to offer both an economic & political overview of the current and future prospects for the country and represents excellent value for any conference. Although not someone to gloss over the real challenges facing the country, Silke’s analysis is both fair and balanced and provides an essential underpinning for business in the country going forward. Not to be missed! 3. South Africa in the World: The Global, African & South African political economy in perspective. A comprehensive account of the latest economic trends from South Africa and beyond her borders. Extend your knowledge to the African and global economy as Daniel Silke summarises developments in the USA, Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Based upon in-depth research utilizing top economic and statistical sources, Silke applies his renowned analytical skills to advise on the future of the global political economy and prospects for Developed, Developing & and Emerging/Frontier Markets. Special attention will be paid to the African growth story with trend pointers for the medium to longer term.
  • 5. This Keynote is always fully updated and now covers the passing of Nelson Mandela as well as issues relating to the country’s political economy and leadership controversies. The keynote also includes a comprehensive overview of the critical social, political and economic issues facing the country. This entertaining and compelling presentation is optimized for foreign audiences and designed as an opening keynote for international conferences in South Africa.   Your essential introductory keynote for conferences with large numbers of foreign delegates.
  • 6. Daniel Silke Keynote Menu 2015 www.danielsilke.com Keynotes with Content          6 Global & African Keynotes From Global Trends & Volatility to the rise of China, the BRICS and Africa – these international Keynotes are fully illustrated and may be offered to audiences globally. .   5. The State of the World: Living & succeeding in an era of Volatility. One of the world’s premier global overviews. A comprehensive analysis of current political, economic and social issues and their impact on the business environment now and into the future. You probably will never see ‘normal’ business conditions ever again. And, you better get used to it! Your business survival now depends on understanding global change and applying both corrective as well as innovative measures to grow your bottom line. The world now faces a number of key ‘disruptors’. These might sound daunting, but only by identifying and understanding them can business exploit the change and create opportunities for the future. Global events have an impact everywhere. Russia’s economic problems are being felt in emerging market currency markets everywhere. Tensions caused by the rise of ISIS in Syria and Iraq has unnerved much of the world. Lower growth rates in China can affect global trade that has increasingly relied on Beijing in recent times.
  • 7. Daniel Silke Keynote Menu 2015 www.danielsilke.com Keynotes with Content          7 Europe’s economy is faring poorly thus hampering consumer demand while in the US, good GDP figures are aiding a recovery as the economy begins to transform. Both regions suffer from stagnant wage increases thereby affecting demand. Technological upheavals continue apace. Rapid innovation and shifts in lifestyle and work conditions are creating a changing environment for humanity. We are currently embedded in a life- long era of technological-driven transition in every aspect of human endeavour. The advent of connectivity, the Internet and smartphones are changing the structures of service providers in every sector. Shale gas is destabilising the traditional oil market and has led to unprecedented drops in petroleum prices globally with substantial consequences likely. Chasing global returns is the new game in town: The unique effects of a low interest rate environment in the West has focused business interest on hitherto uncharted markets across the globe. From Wal-Mart’s entry into South Africa to Burger King’s expansion into India, companies are seeking a higher return on investment as home markets stagnate. Understanding global markets and adapting business to Emerging and new Frontier jurisdictions may well be a central – yet essential - challenge to growth in the near future. Led by China, the West is no longer the centre of business. The household names of the past may well be just that. Alibaba is now taking on Amazon. Watch out for China’s Xiaomi in the cell phone market or Huawei in ICT. Indian companies like Tata now produce the venerable once-British-cachet brands of Jaguar and Land Rover motor vehicles. South African mobile phone companies operate across the African continent. The world’s brands are no longer Western and increasing competition will continue to exacerbate market volatility as new entrants usurp existing markets. The planet is changing: A heady combination of growing populations and middle-classes in emerging economies, income inequalities and multi-tier societies, rapid urbanisation at a pace hitherto unknown to mankind, alarming climate change and the

There is also life beyond BRICS. With faltering growth rates, investors are constantly looking elsewhere in the developing and frontier market environment. But, markets like Turkey, India and Indonesia have suffered currency and confidence dips in recent months making them (and others) more fragile. Silke will analyse and assess these and other contradictions. Africa holds out much promise as it becomes a growing region and stakes its claim to recognition & investment. Can it lay claim to be a future economic powerhouse? Delving into the fortunes of emerging markets, Political Analyst and Futurist Daniel Silke identifies the key political, economic and demographic drivers affecting their future. And, he also identifies Africa and a number of other regional powers and country- groupings as important additions to this debate. Will the BRICS support a move away from the US Dollar as a store of global value? Can the BRICS change and challenge the dynamics of international organizations like the United Nations, International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization? And, are there other countries and regional groupings that might conflict or compete with the BRICS? These questions and more will be answered in this important new address. An essential introduction to these issues in an accessible & entertaining format.

In May 2000, the Economist Magazine referred to Africa as ‘The Hopeless Continent”. A decade later, the same magazine extolled the virtues of Africa in another cover story – this time more positively entitled ‘Africa Rising’. Over the last decade much of Africa has been changing – for the better. Its economic growth has out-grown East Asia – including Japan. Seven out of the top ten growth economies worldwide over the next five years will be African. By 2015, well over 300m Africans will populate a new middle class with, for the first time, a discretionary income. More democracy, better governance, greater regional and global integration make it a continent on the move. Urbanization and the rise of African cities will be critical in providing economic and employment opportunities to the millions who will desert the rural areas in the hope for a better life. And, as Africa’s population increases, so its connectivity through at least 600m cellphone subscribers offers new opportunities in communications, health, innovation and global linkages. Silke also places Africa within the global context as China and other developing and developed economic powers seek both investment opportunities and future commodity security. And, with Africa set to experience an oil and gas boom, new issues and opportunities arise. This dynamic presentation is filled with the latest and most authoritative statistical and analytical evidence to show the emergence of the continent as a force in world business, trade and labour. This keynote does not shy away from the tough realities that often hold back investors’ enthusiasm - such as weak governance, graft (corruption), logistical and related infrastructure bottlenecks.

This keynote is essential for anyone thinking about investing on the continent or any business keen to learn about the growth potential that Africa affords the world.     11. Africa Reality: The State of the Continent in 2015. New for 2015!   Make no mistake, Africa is on the rise. Impressive growth rates over the last decade have contributed to tangible improvements in the living conditions and commercial fortunes of millions. Investment Dollars have flowed into the continent and China has been on the march to secure much-needed commodities. However, in 2015, Africa faces some real challenges. Low levels of manufacturing still hamper proper job creation. Over-reliance on metals and minerals make economies vulnerable. Rising debt levels add a sense of volatility to financial and fiscal planning. Slower Chinese growth can affect Beijing’s role in investing on the continent. And, infrastructure bottlenecks and corruption continue to cause concern. In addition, security concerns from Nigeria to Kenya and beyond are making investors jittery. Africa in 2015 is certainly alive with possibilities like never before. But, it also faces headwinds that can slow growth into the future. In this important new keynote, Daniel Silke analyses both the good and the bad in Africa offering a sweeping and entertaining analysis of the current and future fortunes of the continent. A balanced ‘real’ view on Africa, offering both positives and challenges that are essential to business into the future.
