Physical medicines such as herbs were mostly expected to
assuage the pain only, while "magic" effected the cure.
Their dissection of bodies during mummification seems to have
added greatly to their knowledge of the inner workings of the
human body.
Apart from spiritual healing and herbal medicine, Egyptians
practised massage.
Egyptians thought garlic and onions aided endurance, and
consumed large quantities of them.
3. 10 FACTS PART 2
As their diet included much abrasive material (sand and small
stone particles from grinding the corn) the teeth of the elderly
were often in a very bad state.
Egyptian doctors mostly believed that evil spirits either got
inside your body or sent poisons inside your body to make you
sick.
It is thought that Egyptian doctors figured out that your heart
was related to your heart beat.
Preventive measures included prayers and various kinds of
magic, above all the wearing of amulets.
4. 10 FACTS PART 3
Egyptians thought gods, demons and spirits played a key
role in causing diseases.
The Egyptians also devised the earliest-known pregnancy
test. Women moistened a sample of barley and wheat with
their urine each day. If the barley grew, it meant the child
would be a male; if the wheat grew, it would be a female. If
neither grew, it meant the woman was not pregnant. The
effectiveness of this test has been validated by modern
science. The urine of non-pregnant women will prevent
barley from growing!
