3D Printing
3D printing or additive manufacturing (AM) is any
of various processes for making a three-dimensional
object of almost any shape from a
3D model or other electronic data source
primarily through additive processes in which
successive layers of material are laid down under
computer control.1

3D Printing in Medicine
“Out of all the applications and industries heavily
impacted by advances in 3D printing, the medical field
seems to be undergoing the most drastic changes as a
result of the technology” (3DP News, 09/14)

3D Printing in MedTech
Using PLA material, a hand prosthesis was
built for a little girl in the US whose family
did not have the means to pay for a real
prosthesis – in particular due to the child’s
growth.
Using 3D printing, doctors created an
artificial windpipe for a 6-week old baby
whose left bronchial tube collapsed on a
daily basis, preventing him from breathing;
ultimately saving his life.

18. § Demographic shift with ageing population
§ Widening gap between rich and poor
§ Increasing healthcare costs
3D printing is one of several technological innovations that can help in
getting a hold of the massive challenging we are going to face in the
upcoming decades. Yet, there is still a lot of homework to be done to
differentiate between dream and reality!
