In 2014, the American Red Cross began its Home Fire Campaign, intended to stimulate awareness
of the dangers of residential fires. The campaign has two goals: installing smoke alarms in
neighborhoods with high fire risk and educating the public about fire threats. Since the program
began, an estimated 464 lives have been saved because of post-alarm evacuations and escape
plans.

A recent Red Cross survey indicates that many people have a falsely optimistic idea of how
prepared they are for a fire, and do not know essential safety measures. The organization’s advice

- Fire drill practice. Your window of escape may be as short as two minutes. Everyone should
develop and practice an evacuation plan to beat that deadline.

- Smoke alarm checks. Functioning alarms cut the chances of a fatality in half. Test these monthly
and keep the batteries fresh. Place them on every floor, especially inside and outside bedrooms.
