With more than 25 years of experience in telemedicine and teleradiology, medical professional Peter
Killcommons oversees the telemedicine division of Medweb, a company Pete founded and serves as
CEO. Peter Killcommons is also involved in philanthropic efforts, including a recent trip to Cabo Verde,
Africa, to expand the use of telemedicine.

Rapid technological advances give reason to be optimistic about the future of telemedicine. The field
already makes use of technology such as smart glasses (including Google Glass) and smart watches
(including the Apple Watch) to monitor patients’ health and transmit data to health professionals in real
time.

person’s emotional state through his or her facial expressions. Startups are working to develop
automatic transcription and documentation for patient visits. Robotic surgeries allow remote surgical

As technology continues to progress, telemedicine should be easier to use and become more
widely accepted. More than 50 pieces of telehealth-related legislation are currently pending in the
113th Congress. Experts project that by 2020, telemedicine will be a $36.3 billion industry.
