great war at that time
• It began in the Summer
• It ended in November 1918
• By the war's end, four major imperial powers—
the German, Russian, Austro-Hungarian and
Ottoman Empires—had been militarily and
politically defeated
• On 1 July 1916, the British Army endured the
bloodiest day in its history, suffering 57,470
casualties, including 19,240 dead on the first day
of the Battle of the Somm
• At the start of the war, the German Empire had
cruisers scattered across the globe, some of
which were subsequently used to attack Allied
merchant shipping
