3. Faithlessness
Gen 4:3-5 NIV In the
course of time Cain
brought some of the
fruits of the soil as an
offering to the LORD.
But Abel brought fat
portions from some of
the firstborn of his flock.
4. The LORD looked with
favor on Abel and his
offering, but on Cain
and his offering he did
not look with favor. So
Cain was very angry,
and his face was
downcast.
5.
6. Murder
Gen 4:8 NIV Now Cain
said to his brother Abel,
"Let's go out to the
field." And while they
were in the field, Cain
attacked his brother
Abel and killed him.
9. Murder
Lamech said to his
wives, … “I have killed a
man for wounding me, a
young man for injuring
me. If Cain is avenged
seven times, then
Lamech seventy-seven
times.”
10.
11. Worshipped God
Genesis 4:25-26 CEV
Adam and his wife had
another son. They
named him Seth …
Seth had a son and
named him Enosh.
About this time people
started worshiping the
LORD.
12. Walked with God
Gen 5:24 TNIV Enoch
walked faithfully with
God; then he was no
more, because God
took him away.
Noah was Enoch’s
great-grandson (Gen
5:28-29)
13.
14. Genesis 6:1-3 NIV When men began to increase in
number on the earth and daughters were born to
them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of
men were beautiful, and they married any of them
they chose. Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will
not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his
days will be a hundred and twenty years."
15.
16.
17. Genesis 6:5-7 NIV The LORD saw how great
man's wickedness on the earth had become, and
that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart
was only evil all the time. The LORD was grieved
that he had made man on the earth, and his heart
was filled with pain. So the LORD said, "I will wipe
mankind, whom I have created, from the face of
the earth—men and animals, and creatures that
move along the ground, and birds of the air—for I
am grieved that I have made them."

23. Genesis 6:8-9 NIV But Noah found favor in the
eyes of the LORD. This is the account of Noah.
Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the
people of his time, and he walked with God.
24.
25. Genesis 6:12-14 NIV God saw how corrupt the
earth had become, for all the people on earth had
corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, "I am
going to put an end to all people, for the earth is
filled with violence because of them. I am surely
going to destroy both them and the earth. So make
yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it
and coat it with pitch inside and out.
Fourth lesson in OT Vistas
Creation
Creation of Man
Introduction of Sin into world
Today: What God does about out-of-control sin
Leave Gen 3 with A/E beginning to experience curse — removed from Garden; destined to die
4-6 we see sin and its consequences continue to grow
A/E two sons: Cain (farmer); Abel (rancher)
Offerings: Cain (produce); Abel (animal)
What made one acceptable & the other unacceptable?
Hebrew minkhah, "offering” is general word for an offering. Main word in Lev 2 for the dedication offering (could be produce). Content not critical, but attitude.
Hebrews 11:4 NIV By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.
Unlikely God required blood; rather first & best.
Cain “some”; Abel “firstborn”. Abel favored.
“So Cain was very angry”: Heb "and it was hot to Cain." This Hebrew idiom means that Cain "burned" with anger.
“And his face was downcast”: Heb "And his face fell." The idiom means that the inner anger was reflected in Cain's facial expression.
The first sin of the heart against which Jesus warned:
Matthew 5:21-22 NIV "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.
Cain took hostility to the extreme against which Jesus warned.
Jealous rage led to murder.
Seventh gen from Adam through Cain was Lamech.
Lamech altered plan of God & married two women.
Ideal of Marriage: Genesis 2:24 CEV That's why a man will leave his own father and mother. He marries a woman, and the two of them become like one person.
Marriage involves one man and one woman becoming one family; not one man and many women.
Bible filled with references to men – even godly – who practiced polygamy; but never condones practice.
God puts up with a lot from sinful people.
Lamech’s family was talented & innovative: (Gen 4:20-22) One son was a rancher; one a musician; one a skilled metal worker – life productive & pleasant.
Unfortunately, left to themselves, people get worse instead of better. Lamech's family shows variety of talent and ability God gives humans. It also presents the continuous development of sin as time passes.
Lamech boasted about the murder (“killed” is hārag̱, “to slaughter”). Not remorse, but a boast.
Genesis 4:23-24 GNB ... I have killed a young man because he struck me. If seven lives are taken to pay for killing Cain, Seventy-seven will be taken if anyone kills me.
The Hebrew verbs can be translated in the future tense: “I will slay anyone who wounds me and will not need God’s protection, for with these weapons I can avenge myself seventy-seven fold!”
Genesis 4:23-24 BBE … I would put a man to death for a wound, and a young man for a blow; If seven lives are to be taken as punishment for Cain's death, seventy-seven will be taken for Lamech's.
Seen in this light, it is the first expression of arrogant defiance and warfare in the Bible.
Violence was on the rise. Cain’s descendants showed indifference to sin and evil.
Heb "call in the name."
Better: “Proclaim the name of Yahweh.”
The expression refers to worshiping the LORD through prayer and sacrifice (see Gen_12:8; Gen_13:4; Gen_21:33; Gen_26:25). See G. J. Wenham, Genesis (WBC), 1:116.
Instead of saying that Enoch died, the text says he no longer was present.
The text simply states that God took Enoch. Similar language is used of Elijah's departure from this world (see 2Ki_2:10). The text implies that God overruled death for this man who walked with him.
*** Noah was Enoch’s great-grandson
Some people have thought that the "sons of God" were fallen angels (pointing to Job 1:6).
But the "sons of God" were probably not angels, because angels do not marry or reproduce (Mat_22:30; Mar_12:25).
I believe this phrase refers to the descendants of Seth who intermarried with Cain's evil descendants.
This would have weakened the good influence of the faithful and increased moral depravity in the world, resulting in an explosion of evil
This fits the context of the two genealogies leading up to the deplorable situation in Gen 6.
God’s judgment on sin — 6:5-7
When Bible says God is “sorry,” does not mean God made a mistake – means he will do something about the problem.
Sin grieves God
When you enter into any human relationship — open heart to possible pain – more you open your heart, the deeper the pain can go
Same is true of God – has made his heart vulnerable to us
When we sin, it grieves God (not just breaking rules)
Don’t leave today thinking that sin is not a big deal — “Not that bad”
Sin grieves the heart of God — Sin is bad enough to “blot out” all life (6:7)
Sin is a big deal
Always destructive — always consequences
Never trivialize sin — God’ s holiness always matters
Do we really understand this?
Sin is a big deal because God’s holiness is a big deal
Is the story of the flood a children’s story? (cute pictures, and “Arky Arky Arky”)
One of the darkest moments in humanity’s existence
Only darker moment — hours of darkness before Jesus’ death
Gustave Dore's “The World Destroyed by Water”
*** Also “The Deluge”
*** NC-17 disaster epic with adult themes, hard language, intense violence, etc.
2. Even in the midst of judgment, God is the Redeemer
God redeems men through one man!
Meet Noah — 6:8-9
Noah stands in stark contrast to all the sin
Promised conflict of Genesis 3:15 CEV You and this woman will hate each other; your descendants and hers will always be enemies.
See how God redeems the righteous Noah
God the Judge tells Noah about the coming flood
Kill all human and animal life
God the Redeemer makes plans to save Noah
God gives the plans for the ark
Send the animals — shuts the door (7:16)
Never loses control of the flood — tells it to come and go (unlike ancient myths in which gods lose control of the flood)
When over — accepts Noah’s sacrifice
What do the Garden, Ark, and the Cross all have in common?
Each is the place of the judgment of sin and the redemption of the righteous
Even in the midst of God punishing our sin, he is always there to redeem.
Are you in the midst of sin and its consequences?
God is always there to redeem and restore.
3. Noah is a man of amazing faith
Put yourself in Noah’s shoes
God tells him about the flood. — “What?” (Has there ever been rain? )
Genesis 2:5-6 NIV … the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth … but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground—
Build ark. “What?” — Long, skinny, floating barge
Where’s it going to float? — You’ll see
How big?
1.5 football fields x 25 yds wide (this room), 3 levels 15’ ceilings
So big it will take 7 days for the animals to fill it up.
The ark had the same cargo capacity of a modern cargo ship. Volume of 1.4 million cubic feet and a gross tonnage of 14,000 tons. This is the equivalent of 522 railroad box cars. The ark could have carried over 125,000 sheep-sized animals. Interestingly, there are less than 18,000 species of land animals today. Also, average size is less than that of a sheep.
“How will I steer?” No rudder — at my mercy of the redeeming God
Gather food for all the animals. How much? For a year
Imagine the ridicule
Apparently took over 100 years
What if God asked us to build an ark on our parking lot.
Yet, look at Noah’s response
Believed God and responded in obedience — 6:22 (4x)
Hebrews 11:7 NIV By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
Noah was 600 years old,
God sends the animals — imagine the neighbors (picture)
He enters when the rain starts
40 days for the floods to rise above the mountain tops — 7:21-23
We were put here to care for these animals — they suffer the consequences of our sin
150 days to recede (ark on mountains of Ararat)
4 months until see the dry land
Raven — strong bird; never returns
Dove (twice) — olive trees only grow in valleys
2 more months until God says it was okay (1 year and 10 days) — 8:15-17
Picture the recreated world is like
God continues to be a redeeming God
Covenant — sign of the rainbow
People have not changed — 8:21 (NIV “even though”)
Genesis 8:21 NIV The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.
What does the flood tell us about God – and his relationship to man?
Flood is not a children’s story
Sin grieving God’s heart — Redeemer — Faith
When you see storm — agree with God that he hates sin
Sin grieves God — always horrific — destructive
Look at the sin in your life — esp. what you are comfortable with (tongue)
When you see the rainbow — God is a redeeming God
People whose faith leads to obedience will be redeemed
Has God asked you to do something the world says is silly? Step out in faith
Like Noah and the ark?
God asks you to Hate sin, not even toying with it, and pursue holiness?
Give all of yourself to him? Fully devoted disciple
When God calls you to believe him
Like Noah, we are to respond in faith, and faithful obedience
