T shows SS the pictures about the pioneers that were introduced the previous class. T asks SS: ¨Do you remember
these pictures? Who were these men? What did they do for the first time in history? Remember they were pioneers¨ (T

This is a True or False activity. You´ll have to decide if these sentences are true or false according to the
text we read. Work in pairs. Read them and decide.
Write T or F next to each sentence.
1. Ferdinand Magellan circumnavigated the world for the first time.
2. He navigated across the Atlantic and the Pacific through a strait in South America.
3. Magellan returned to Spain in 1522.
4. Elcano was killed in Mactan, Philippines.
5. The Victoria ship voyaged back to Spain.
T: ¨Now let´s check your answers together. Tell me: is sentence 1 true or false? ¨ SS: ¨It´s false! ¨ T: ¨What is
the correct sentence? Did Magellan circumnavigate the world for the first time in history?¨SS: ¨No! Elcano!¨ T:
Yes, it was Elcano, so(writing the answer on the board):
Magellan didn´t circumnavigate the world for the first time.
T emphasizes the negative expression and explains: ¨Look at this expression. What is it? We use this
expression to negate: didn´t or did not without contraction. Look at the verb! Is it in the past form? No,
because we have the auxiliary to mark the past tense forms already, the same as in the questions. Do you
remember? ¨
¨Now, let´s continue with the other sentences¨. T asks SS to read them aloud and invites them to write the
negative ones on the board.
